    Great comparison Matt. I think I’ll do a video with the box wedge and similar size pieces. The bottom line is that each style of splitter has its pros and cons. The best for your situation depends on a lot of variables.

      @FirewoodontheHill  5 місяців тому +1

      You are correct. I would like to see that comparison. I feel the box wedge brings the cycle time down quite a bit versus a 4 way wedge. But who knows until you test it.

    Horizontal works best with a 2 person operation. Still messy. Vertical works best for a single person operation. Much cleaner and far more precise with the cuts. Good comparison. Thank you.

    I work on the log lift side of my 28c. Sometimes it's not the most convenient but it's definitely more time efficient.
    The 17vs seems like a heck of a machine though!

    • @FirewoodontheHill
      @FirewoodontheHill  5 місяців тому

      Yes for smaller wood you can work on the log lift side but it’s definitely tougher on the back. I would say 80% or more people split on the other side.

    I think you made some great points on horizontal vs vertical! Some of which most people wouldn’t think of! I seen right away when considering a splitter with a log lift the walking around the machine every time! Great video Matt👊🏻

  • @georgegrap73

    One comparison that needs to be made between the vertical and horizontal splitter is the amount of waste that they make when splitting. If I'm going to spend the money to bring the wood into the yard, then buck it up, only to make 10% waste on the horizontal vs minimal waste on the vertical, then I'll go with the vertical splitter every time.

    • @FirewoodontheHill
      @FirewoodontheHill  5 місяців тому

      Without a doubt the vertical makes way less waste and I don’t think anyone is going to disagree with that. What people will say is they would be willing to waste a little more wood for speed which will allow for more production.

    Just found your channel, when Wolfe Ridge linked it on Facebook, and I'm looking forward to watching more! One thing I notice in all the videos I see of vertical splitters like this is how close people keep their hands to the wedge as the wood splits. My day job is as an ER nurse, so it makes me wonder if there's a difference in injury rates with vertical vs horizontal splitters. Seems like having your thumb positioned an inch off without realizing it could lead to a shorter thumb!

    • @FirewoodontheHill
      @FirewoodontheHill  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Welcome to the channel! I would say the vertical splitter would cause more injuries than a vertical but the option a horizontal has that a vertical doesn’t have is auto cycle. Auto cycle could be dangerous.

    Good video Matt! I think one of the big advantages of vertical is you can easily turn around and stack it or toss it. If you stacked off horizontal or tossed it it’d take a lot longer making circles around the machine. Vertical also doesn’t require a conveyor to get fast times. Horizontal I think needs a real conveyor if you want to maximize its potential. Cons, vertical is big and bulky, I think there too tall for most garage doors? I’ll be curious to see why you end up with in 6 months 😂

    • @FirewoodontheHill
      @FirewoodontheHill  5 місяців тому

      Yea all those points are valid and I agree. The 17vs is too tall for my garage. I’m not sure the exact height but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s 9.5 to 10ft tall.

    Good side by side comparison 👍 I think your comments, as well as other's comments, that each machine has it's strengths and weaknesses is a fair assessment. I guess the quality of the splits would be the determining factor for me 🤷

    I've never timed it, but I've always felt my box store splitter was quicker to use in the vertical position. Split horizontal a few times over ten years ago, set to vertical and never looked back. Easier on the body to manipulate the rounds as well. Looking forward to selling enough wood to put the 17VS in my woodyard.

    The Differences between 28C VS 17VS if your doing Production and you have a second person helping you with a conveyor the 28C is the way to go, 17VS if your dealing big rounds the 17VS is the way to go if your working on your own the or dealing with boiler wood or tree service wood bundle wood the 17VS is the way to go,

    im getting my 17 vsc in may my problem is bending over to split but my biggest reason for going vertical is slash and control of size i dont care if a 6 way is faster i dont like slash and big pieces

    • @FirewoodontheHill
      @FirewoodontheHill  4 місяці тому

      I agree with you those are great reasons for going vertical. I don’t use a 6 way myself. I think the vertical is pretty close to the speed of a way.

  • @buckinfirewood
    @buckinfirewood 5 місяців тому +1

    What I run a 4 way I set it to make the size at the bottom and only bring back the top 2 pieces.. maybe try that because it seems you move the 4way too many times.. maybe.. I don't know.. each there own.. that vertical definitely shines on custom splits

    • @buckinfirewood

      Nice set up my friend.. you definitely came a long way since your front yard days

    • @FirewoodontheHill
      @FirewoodontheHill  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah I usually do that when the round is small but when the round is big it makes wide pieces on the bottom so I will have to resplit them. I have found that splitting the rounds in equal four parts I can send each quarter through the 4 way once for all even pieces. Sometimes the quarter is too big and I still have to resplit one piece. That is my thinking behind that.

    I'm 65. Which splitter would you think is going to be more tiring to use? It looks like the vertical you "handle" the material less which would be important to me. I'm too old to be working too hard.

    • @FirewoodontheHill
      @FirewoodontheHill  3 місяці тому

      I would say a vertical would be your best bet. It’s easier on your back. The only big downside to the vertical is its speed compared to the horizontal.

      I still think it would be faster to run it from the other side because you would have to walk around the log lift. Now I’m talking about doing big rounds. With small rounds you can stand on the log lift and split which would be faster.
