Приєднався 20 лют 2022
This channel is about our adventure of starting a firewood business in NC. All of the wood we acquire is 100% free to us from tree services or other locals who have downed trees needing cleaned up.
We will go over the wins and losses of our adventure and document everything. We hope to bring you knowledge, encouragement, and entertainment with this channel. This journey started January 2022!

Hello Matt! Good to see ya found the fountain of youth! That’s where you’ve been😂 Glad you had great a great hunting season and holidays! UA-cam can consume your time for sure so awesome you had a break. Look forward to your clearing project👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Todd. It was a nice break and I’m ready to get back into it
That old manure conveyor works great. Better than the new ones. Wish I didn't scrap mine now.
Yes they don’t make them like they used too
Can I get a green hat
Yesssir email me at Ross.matt48@yahoo.com
Your downholder is not good...on the other side its much better Hans
Hello from Germany...i think it looks very good...Hans
Glad you were able to clean uo some of your off cuts. Nice goal for next year, mine is 50 full cords. Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Nice goal!
what size tractor is this and is it enough?
Sorry just saw your tractor model in the box above. Cheers
It’s enough tractor but I could use more. I definitely wouldn’t go smaller
What is the make and model of your horizontal splitter? That thing is NICE!
Wolfe Ridge 28c. Mine is 2 years old so they have upgraded a few things too!
What did i miss. Why are you giving that wood away for free? Why can't you turn it into firewood for your roadside stand?
I sell quality wood and not just junk. It’s nasty wood I can’t make into 16” pieces.
Happy new year. You definitely got lucky and didn't have any damage done to your roof. My goal for this year is to lose 50 lb and get back in shape
Happy New Year! That’s a great goal and I hope you achieve it!
My Dad would grow a beard starting early fall each year. He would shave it on opening day baseball season for us boys each spring. He always looked so much younger like yourself! There eventually became a year when there was no opening day in the spring as we all grew up and moved on. His beard was almost to his belt when he passed away. Sometimes, production has to slow so the woodyard can get cleaned up. It is looking better as each load of junk leaves!👍
Haha that’s a great memory! Thanks for watching!
New year resolution to look 10 years younger. Lol.
Check haha 🤣
Cutting down your buffer zone? Idk, I think I would leave it.
I will still have plenty of wood between my house and the neighbors. That land needs to be used
Happy new year matt, new year new beginning and great job on cleaning up the woodyard😂👏👏👏
Happy new year! Thank you!
Hey Matt , You look better without a beard. It's freezing cold here in Western North Carolina. Looks like you have tons of clean up in your woodyard. Looking forward to more videos. Kee Po warm and stay busy. Sincerely, Steve
Thanks Steve, I appreciate it, I'll try to keep the beard trimmed back a little haha
Nice video Matt Lots of plans ! I guess you better always have your tractor under cover !!! The beard thing....I'd go with whatever Sadie likes ...you might reap more benefits !!!!😊 Happy New Year to you and Sadie !!
Haha she said grow it back but keep it trimmed.. Happy new year!
No Matt, you look more human now
Haha thanks
Happy New Year brother !
Happy new year!
First thing that comes to mind in a lower elevation is, does it have a time of year when its wet compared to surrounding areas. . 2nd is how much are you increasing the shade and decreaseing wind. . For the new area id suggest making one part ibc's one part mountain wood stack, to minimize moving the ibc's. Then as you empty ibc you could make another mountain. . One of the reasons we sheet are sheds in 1" boards is that issue right there. Had that 4x8" been a 4x4 it probably would have cracked. 0.01c
Yeah I’ll definitely need to test both ways out at the new drying area. It gets plenty of wind and sun down there now so once all the trees are down I’m sure I’ll get plenty of sun and wind. Yep going heavy would be the way to go on a structure.
U look younger
Yes very much so haha
Durham here, looks like we gonna get some snow Saturday :) . Thanks for all your videos, love your channel !
Only an hour or so away. I think we are! Thanks for watching!
I'm glad the tree didn't smoke your tractor 🙏🙏🙏 Stay safe Matt
Me and you both. Thanks for watching!
People stealing wet firewood is a new one. U should just make a sign on ibcs and sell it green then . Then u are making $ and not having to store it all to season. Single digits here yet no one's buying bundles from either of my roadside stands. Dry oak big bundles for only $5. I have more buyers for cedar kindling than I do for hardwood bundles. Been delivering facecords more regularly but I still have my 15ft tall ,50x50ft boilerwood pile and about 80 facecords of Seasoned dry firewood left. I've already got like 30 facecords of hardwoods split for fall 2025. I've got about 100 full cords of logs in my woodyard and still over thousand dead trees to log on 4 properties this winter including our farm. No shortage of firewood logs. I could use a firewood processor rental for wks
Ppl aren’t stealing it they are paying for it but they are still buying wet wood haha. Everyone is looking to buy bulk in the winter so that’s why bundles aren’t selling very good.
Dayum!!!! Looking fresh there buddy 💪
😎thanks
looking good Matt, keep the shorter beard/scruff. Glad the tractor and shed wasn't damaged from the falling tree.
I might do a middle ground of both haha.
😂 when the video started I was like " who the hell is that?". It happens, I have had a accident every time I get a new set of trimmers. Glad the damage to the shed was more 😊
Haha right. Thanks for watching!
@FirewoodontheHill oops "wasn't" 🤦
I would like to offer some constructive suggestions, get rid of the axe, you have a splitter, develop a system, 1, the only wood coming out the left side should be firewood. Break your breakdown pieces from the other side so they stack on your right side out of the way. Every time you have to throw your firewood pieces over your breakdown pieces you are wasting time and energy. Break all your pieces down to blade width then do your multiple cuts in easy to handle bundles. It wastes a lot of time pulling pieces apart that the blade wasn't quite wide enough for. Good content and good comparisons of vertical versus horizontal. Enjoyed the video. I would have enjoyed more if you hadn't wasted time stacking breakdown pieces on your left.😥☺️🌏
Yes those could’ve sped it up for sure.
Having a timer on screen might help with retention?
Yes that could help.
Definitely NOT a cottonwood.
I have a big pile of cottonwood rounds in the yard and the wood and the bark doesn’t quite look like cottonwood
Yeah I believe it’s sweet gum
We are all at an age and it’s easy to forget we will loose physical ability as we age. The 17VS-C is my choice. This vid, was very helpful in my decision process, thank you!
That’s a great choice! I’m glad I could help!
Is merry christmas
Merry Christmas!
Let's see, compare it to my log splitter and my plans on upgrading it to a wood processor: old (am fairly certain Montgomery Ward) 5hp 30" stroke. Used $400. Ran great over a yr. Then my lack of preventive maintenance let the engine oil go dry and crispy crittered the engine and block. New 6.5 predator engine from harbor freight $135 + 200 mile rnd trip to get it $50 gas. So far...$585.00. Broke the guide plate bolts off yesterday. But, probably build a bigger push plate so, no biggie. Adding a lift: cylinder $100, power beyond valve $150, steel - from scrap yard - free. Hoses $75. Total so far...$905.00, adding cut off saw and log clamp and feed trough: each hydraulic motor - $100 × 4. 1 for saw, 1for feeding log to cut length, and one for a winch to draw log to processor, 1 for conveyer. 4 valves for each. $400. Bar and chain $50. Steel- again, gree from scrap yard. Total so far $1,655.00. Maybe a quart size reservoir so upgrade to at least 5 gallon $100. Total $1,755.00. Oops, almost forgot hoses and fittings...rough estimate $150/addition, 5 additions : $750, total $2500 roughly. And small, grab a log from the woods, bring log to itself, puts the log into the feed trough, hydraulic roller measures it out, saw cuts it, ram splits it, and the conveyer loads it in the truck/trailer/ bin. I also want to add...this is to make it easier for an old man. And one tiny rocket mass heater that doesn't use a bunch of wood. Not for commercial purposes.
If Hipa weren't sold out of almost everything...
Dang really? Did you try on Amazon too?
The performance of those HIPA chains looked very good Matt. Merry Christmas to you and your family from another NC wood hound! - Dick
Merry Christmas Dick!
I understand that but it gives you more room to work with. You would have a lot more room for your split.😂💯👍👍
Great job Matt. Great saws and chains. Once the hickory sticks dry, can be a real pain to saw. Nice work
Yessir I found that out haha. Thanks for watching.
Hey Matt, nice buck up them logs, the lousy nails man get a chain every time. I’ve have to try some chains from hippa. Great video!
Yessir you won’t be disappointed. Thanks for watching.
I have had good luck with hipa as well. Try to set the hickory off by itself because you can get more $$ for it than mixed hardwood. Enjoyed it
Yessir I’ll split the hickory Before I’ll split the oak. Thanks for watching!
Hey Matt , I’ve had good luck out of their chains and all any small engine parts .
Well that’s great news Del! Thanks for sharing!
Great video Matt!! Ill have to try the Hippa chain. Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Thanks. Yes you should.
You need to get a metal detector and that way you can start going through your logs so you're not hitting any metal
Yeah that’s not a bad idea.
Nice work brother, its nice to see you have some logs in now too. I need to work on getting some logs soon!!! Maybe this week💪💪 Seems like a good deal with the chains too, I've heard those chains are good for the money. Stay safe man💪
Thanks man. Gotta get the wood anytime you can because it seems to be getting harder to get.
Murphys Law strikes again on putting a new chain on...😢 Have a Merry Christmas on the hill!!🎄🎅🎄🎅
Thanks Wayne. Merry Christmas!
The true test is the hardness of the chain. I run Husqvarna x cut because they hold an edge longer than Oregon.
Are those chains easy to sharpen? You need a different file right?
@FirewoodontheHill i sharpen all my chains on my grinder. You can use the same file.
X-Cut has become my favorite also Bert. Matt's experience with the HIPA chain was pretty impressive too.
@@oldguyfirewood I wouldn't be afraid to try them.
This is the time that you could be taken to clean your woodyard up.😂
Hey I’ve actually been cleaning up a lot. You will see the progress in future videos haha. but I don’t make any money cleaning up so it’s low on the totem pole.
Always looking for a good deal on chains! Thanks for sharing!
Yessir!
Good haul!
Thanks
swap your marker rod over to the other side or start at the other end of the log. Sorry, My OCD got the best of me. 😂
Yeah I try to mark left to right but the left side had a crotch at the end so I started from the right side to get the most I could out of the straight wood.
Hey Matt glad you got in some logs .
Out of the 462 or 400 what are the positives and negatives of both saws, in your opinion?
462 is heavier than the 400 but has more power. The 400 is definitely a smoother saw. If I only had one saw I would buy the 462 as I need that extra power. But, I tend to find myself using my 400c more often than the 462 so there’s that haha.
@@FirewoodontheHill I have a ms400 but I wanted a unbiased opinion on the 462 comparison can’t decide if I need another 400 before they change it or just get the 462 if any of that makes sense lol
@ get the 462c. The 462 runs a 25 chain way better than the 400. I run a 20” on the 400 and 24 inch on the 462.
