Thanks for doing this video it was very informative and surprising. I would have bet the vertical spliter would be faster and easier but it was still quite the workout. The hookaroon was a win I wouldn't have thought to use one but now I will. I'd like to see this same exact video with extra large wood but with a box wedge on the horizontal splitter to see how it compares with speed and if it's easier to manhandle than with the four way wedge. I get a kick out of your youthfulness and inexperience using the tractor you dropped the big round off to the left of the vertical splitter and the lifting table is on the right. Ahh to be young and full of vigor. On another of your videos you're trying to remove big rocks with a jack hammer and tractor. I would recommend putting teeth on the tractor bucket as it will dig much better. Take away as much dirt around the rock as possible and build a fire on it. The heat should make the rock expand and fracture making it easier to remove. At least that's been my experience. Thanks again for a real equally and no bs comparison. Good job.
Very nice comparison of the 2 . A 4 way should beat a single knife every time an being that close in times says a lot of just how fast that vertical actually is . Watch the fingers on them big rounds it was one just like it that got my thumb .
Yes the cycle time is so much faster! It makes my 28c look like it’s standing still lol. Yeah I won’t be messing with big rounds like that again. I’m noodling them up haha.
I’ve been waiting for this exact video! Honestly, the VS has nicer and smaller pieces. A lot of what the horizontal splitter did aren’t as uniform and some will need re-split. Also the VS is a lot easier to get into the tote. Horizontal left a lot on the ground. Which did you prefer? Which was less manual effort?
The vertical was actually harder on me than the horizontal with this big of a round. As far as once the round was broken down to manageable pieces I think the vertical is easier to use. As far as moving the wood from the splitter I feel like the horizontal doesn’t a better job if each machine had a conveyor. I’m only splitting into Totes to keep it even.
gaadamn those were some massive logs haha, probably the biggest I've ever seen split on Wolfe Ridge machines. They handled them no problem at all. In my opinion, the vertical splitter is superior in every way. I might sell the Ultra for one of those bad boys
Great comparison Matt! I’ll still take the slower time of the vertical for a couple reasons. Less chance of a heavy quarter coming off the splitter and hitting you and then having to pick it back up. Also less strain on the back with the vertical. Just my opinion. Both great splitters. I’m like you I don’t usually split rounds that big anyway. Take care👊🏻

Log lifts on splitters are nice. Nice job with both splitters. I use the bucket of my tractor as my log lift for big pieces like that. Keep a hatchet on you for those stringie pieces. Good job on the video.

Great video Matt! I liked the comparison, I was thinking the vertical was going to be a bit slower, but I do like that lack of waste it produced. I’m due for the first oil change on the 35 SHO BW, but after that I have a 28-30” Ash log I’ll put through a similar test. I like the idea of quartering it first, I think I’ll noodle and use the skid steer splitter to break down… I’m not a fan of having huge rounds that high up where if they fall they can damage the machine or me. You had a close call with the motor on the 28C, I cringed when that big quarter fell off, glad the machine made it through unscathed. Take care my friend & have a great day Around the Yard!

I think the vertical splitter does a better job with the bigger rounds due to the very large working table. But there was still a lot of man handling of the round regardless of which splitter was used. Those 2 giant rounds would be easier to process if they were noodled down into quarters before splitting.
Nice video! You might try to first bust some pieces off the edge first with the vertical splitter,, anything to make that piece of wood lighter will make it easier to slide around! Excellent machines! Great video
I mean, yes, it can lift that round, but when you smash your air cleaner and carb off you’ll wish you cut it into quarters first 😇😇having said that, that 28C split that like it was nothing!!! Impressive
I use a fiskars hatchet, or small axe to cut the strings holding the big rounds together. This saves a ton of time and energy by not having to move around a big round that is not split completely apart.
Okay…Okay… I’ll give the Box Wedge a try at some big rounds. I don’t have a 33” available, but I do have a 28-29” Ash log that I have been trying to get to. 😊
I have a lot of big rounds on my channel. Help hint. Never extend the wedge all the way to the top. Wood will get wedge under the 4 way and it’s tough to get out. If you little a little room u can rise it up and it will come out
Yes I saw that 42 inch round video. Better you than me haha. I usually don’t go all the way up with the wedge but I was willing to risk it to get higher up on the round haha.
NOODLIN is the smart and most efficient way to handle those large rounds less strain on the vain and quicker and easier on you just saying good vid though 👍
Just further proof that there is nothing the Wolfe Ridge splitters cannot do. I wish the stuff I have been splitting were that straight and consistent grain. That stuff is lumber quality. I wind up with crotches, knots and twists in some of the stuff I split. My Wolfe Ridge still handles it, but there is a lot more work involved. I have to say that the horizontal seemed to handle it faster and with way less physical effort.
28C VS 17VS The Differences if your Dealing with Big Rounds and your working on your own your dealing with bundle bundle wood boiler wood the 17VS is the way to go it Produces the splits of wood yo want, it also produces better wood the the 28C with out waste, 28C is a good splitter if your doing production it will require a second person helping you to load wood on the log lift, if your doing production for next years firewood the 28C IS THE WAY TO GO, IF YOUR DEALING WITH BIG ROUNDS FOR THE 28C YOU NEED A CHAIN SAW TO CUT THE BIG ROUNDS TO MAKE THOSE PIECES WOOD EASIER TO SPLIT,
This is my observation, if you are a solo operation, a vertical splitter is the way to go. It will split any size round in to any size stick of firewood you wish to make with minimal scrap. A horizontal splitter will require 2 people to keep up with the machine and to pull back all of the pieces that need to be resplit. I also agree that, noodling the bigger round down to a manageable size is better for both machines.
The splitter was loaned to me to demo for a few months and I will be trying out the 17vs-c next so I can tell you which one I would prefer then. I think it depends on how you are loading the wood. If you are putting it in a trailer I think the conveyor is the way to go but if you are stacking it off the splitter you don’t need the conveyor
Haha I’ve had the 6 way and it’s good for small wood but it makes bigger pieces than I want. I feel like a 12 way would probably be too much for my 28c.
Man, i know its owner preference, but why the lift is on same side as the engine i dont know. Lol , heavy wood and an engine collision seems not good. Massive round, = hard work, but massive pile afterwards Thumbs up man.
Yeah it can cause a big issue for sure. I’m sure there are some reasons why they chose to put the motor on that side. That why I like big rounds, lots of wood!
When you were done splitting with the vertical, all the wood was all loaded in the tote already. When you were done splitting with the horizontal, all the wood was on the ground needing to be picked up and put in the tote, making you bend over 50 plus times. I'll take the vertical for that reason alone.
Good observation. For this test I didn’t worry about the wood being put into anything as the horizontal would have the advantage if it has a conveyor or if I just let it slide into the tote. The vertical has the option for a conveyor as well but that would be a whole other test. The reason I threw the wood in the tote for the vertical is I didn’t want wood sliding off and hitting the wheel well.
I’m sure you want a chainsaw I would always rip those logs and down to knock them in half and sometimes in half again. Big log like that and we want 200 pounds. Good luck.
The whole purpose of having those machines are to "work smarter, not harder"...it appears you are working harder. Take the time to at least half those rounds.
Suggestion...if you plan on getting a lot of big rounds, Wolfe Ridge makes a splitter to mount on the front of your Kioti...break them down and the process them.
Yeah I don’t plan to split big rounds. I usually noodle them down to quarters with a chainsaw. I was just doing this for people who ask me too. The tractor splitter would work great for the big rounds.

The vertical splitter is impressive. If I spilt solo I think the vertical is the way to go.
Well that is red oak that splits pretty easy . I think hickory that size would put up a real fight .

It's not bad of a time difference. I tend to get larger rounds all the time with knots, and my SHO split one up tonight just awesome.
Yes the times are comparable. Yessir I bet the SHO has no issues.
Matt this is why I have a 4409 splitfire on the way for My excavator . I hate dealing with the big rounds on any splitter .

I agree. I usually noodle my big rounds but I did this because a lot of people were asking for it.
Awesome, you might also try waxing the table. I’ve done that on mine, and it makes sliding the rounds so much easier.
Hmm thats interesting. The wax doesn’t collect debris really bad?

I had almost the exact thing happen on my 28C with a chunk off a big round falling and just missing the Honda. It's dicey even with two guys.
Yes that’s happened to me and friend running the splitter too. It’s just better to noodle the logs down to size.

I think it’s better to noodle those big ones. Unsafe for you and your equipment. Just because it can do it doesn’t mean you should.

I totally get the purpose of the episode however I agree. Cheaper to replace a chain than a blown hose.

Try using a pickaroon to move the wedges around on the splitter

Big rounds like those on the vertical spliter should be split from the outer sides sides inward
