    I lived in Queens, New York over 30 years ago, on a street on a long, steel hill. Every so often, I would hear some kids timing the light from the bottom of the hill from the top of it. You always knew when the light turned green because you heard the kids scream "AHHHHH!" as they rolled down the hill to go through it. It was HILARIOUS every time!

    I did 40 on my Schwinn Fastback downhill in Fillmore Ca. Smooth as silk in 1969.

      That’s awesome! In a way I’ve joined a very old club. “High speed on a Stingray.” Guys like you who came before me established it. I assume I’m the first to document it in detail. 👍🏼

    Great achievement on getting to 41 mph. Looks pretty exhausting to do that many tries. Now for a good meal, & some shut 👁 eye.

    You may not have pulled off 40 mph but I think the real achievement was that you did 16 miles (~2 mi x 8 attempts) of ascending and jeans. What percent grade is that road section?

    • @GoodTimeBikes
      @GoodTimeBikes  Рік тому +2

      I think it was about .3 mi one way. 1,584ft with elevation of 123ft. Divide 1584 by 123 then multiply by 100 and we should have our grade correct? If I did the math right it’s 7.76%. I think this would be more accurately measured if we were only measuring the steepest portion. My calculation includes a rather flat portion. Either way that’s pretty funny you mention mileage and jeans lol I wore jeans because I wanted to at least save my legs if I went down.

    • @yuri_on_youtube
      @yuri_on_youtube Рік тому +3

      @@GoodTimeBikes That's pretty much correct. I'd reckon you could eek it out from 39 to 40 mph by getting rid of the camera stick and mounting the camera central to you.
      But riding uphill on it and stopping on those brakes (either bike) is a feat in of itself.

    • @GoodTimeBikes
      @GoodTimeBikes  Рік тому +1

      @@yuri_on_youtube if the video does well enough I’ll find a bigger hill and maybe even shoot for 45. I hear Galena IL has some big hills but that’s about 3hrs one way. Maybe if I rode more in the other lane it would have made a difference but there’s traffic so I didn’t want to take that risk.
      I was a able to ride the Moab up hill in 1st or 2nd gear but the Stingray didn’t stand a chance so I had to walk it lol my vintage brake pads did a great job! Lol So long as that kind of performance wasn’t demanded of them consecutively they were good. I imagine if they didn’t have time to cool down there would be a problem lol

    I had a back tire blow out on my Orange Krate. It had a slow leak and I would over inflate it every morning. Thank God I wasn't going as fast as you. It was out of control. I ended up un some pricker bushes. Nice to see your old Stingray working so good. Don't worry about the speed so much. It's all about how good you look while riding it.

    • @GoodTimeBikes

      I was definitely taking a risk but I really wanted to hit 40 mph. I’m planning on finding a bigger hill so this bike officially reaches 40. Do you still have your Orange Krate?

    • @tywebb355
      @tywebb355 11 місяців тому

      @@GoodTimeBikes No, unfortunately I don't. I parked it after I pushed it home. A kid from down the street saw it and asked if I wanted to sell it. I sold it to him for $10 so I could buy a watch. I tried to get it back years later, but it was gone. 😔

      @@tywebb355 there are late 70s and early 80s Schwinn Fair Ladys that you can find for $100. Your Orange Krate is expensive no matter what (as you probably know). Even the worst rusty heap it’s $600! It would be nice if you could find an Orange Krate for yourself despite the price tag though.

    I remember watching the programme about Guy Martin and his record for highest speed in a gravity powered "Soapbox". You might consider it cheating, but you'll get a slightly higher speed if you were to add a little weight, somewhere out of the airflow. A slim back pack with some bottled water? Plus you get a drink on the way back up the hill. 😁

    • @GoodTimeBikes
      @GoodTimeBikes  Рік тому

      Ah not a bad idea but in the video my “rider weight” is about 200lbs as it is.. I don’t want to add anymore stress to the little Stingray lol

    You might want to go trying to leaned forward downward towards the Handle bar. You should try a 1980s 10 speed betcha you will be able to hit 45 mph.

      I tried everything I could that day and nothing was working out for me. However, I did surpass my goal on a bigger hill. Also, I definitely agree that a 10 speed would have picked up more speed and it would have felt more stable I bet haha

      @@GoodTimeBikes Won't go praising the movie as "fine art", 'cuz it's not, BUT it has a scene in it that I always remember, and wanted to do: They've scored and dealt the coke, and have bought their iconic choppers (I always liked Billy's bike the best), and they're getting ready to pull-out onto the highway, sitting on the shoulder of the road, when Peter Fonda looks at his wristwatch, notes the time, takes-off his watch, and tosses it into the weeds. They've now got all the time in the world.

    • @rickmills4801

      Now, If you're curious about how Evel Knievel would be noted, think of his "logo", or "motif", if you will, as laid-out like a Confederate Flag, but with a White Ground, instead of red, with the star-spangled Blue "X", but stripe-bordered in Red. I think his cape may have shown this.
      By the way, I have been told, though I have no way to check it, that his cane he had with him after the Ceasars Palace crash, is the same " Doctor's Cane" presented to a certain Doc Holliday, after graduating from Dentistry School, and who traded it for the side-by-side Morgan Earp had, on the way to the OK Corral that day...
