Hello and welcome to Good Time Bikes! I’m looking forward to growing my UA-cam channel with all things bicycle related! I’ve worked for Richards Bicycles in the Chicagoland area since 2006. My goal is to open my own bike shop named “Good Time Bikes” with hopes this channel can help me achieve that. I’m really excited to showcase restorations on bikes from the 50s/60s, bring 80s/90s mountain bikes back to life and take them out mountain biking (bringing you along for the ride) and resurrecting vintage BMX bikes! You’ll also find some helpful tips and how to videos.
43 MPH on Original Schwinn Stingray
This is the episode where I finally surpass 40 mph! Since I completed the restoration episodes on this bike it’s been my goal to hit 40 mph. This was my second attempt and it left me wondering, how much faster should I go?

How to Change a Flat Tire on a Bicycle
I just bought one at a yard sale for $20 someone gave it a cheap spray paint job. How do i go about removing the bad paint job and bring it back to the original paint job? Also, how can i find out what year it is and how can i find extra parts for it as they didn't put the fenders back on.
Where do you get the rivets and the eye lids for sissie bar?
I lived in Queens, New York over 30 years ago, on a street on a long, steel hill. Every so often, I would hear some kids timing the light from the bottom of the hill from the top of it. You always knew when the light turned green because you heard the kids scream "AHHHHH!" as they rolled down the hill to go through it. It was HILARIOUS every time!
I know this video came out about a year ago but I wanted to ask you how did you find tires for your bike? My wife is trying to restore a 1963 schwinn and the tire size is odd. Do you know of a good website to look on for those?
This looks like the exact bike my late brother had minus the 2 speed kick back, I have a really good picture of him and I With it.
Good job! Enjoyed the video
Thank you!
Great work and outcome!
Thank you!
My Schwinn fast back has a single pan seat. Seat post clamp is welded to the pan. I just replaced it with an after market cheapy.
What's the name of the kit?
A bit late with this comment/question, but what kind/size tires are those, on the Stingray? I have a banana seat bike I'm planning to restore, almost the same as yours. Awesome build! New subscriber here!
Great job! where did you find the seat cover? looking for a Lemon peeler seat cover thx
Check out koolest.com and thank you!
You might want to go trying to leaned forward downward towards the Handle bar. You should try a 1980s 10 speed betcha you will be able to hit 45 mph.
I tried everything I could that day and nothing was working out for me. However, I did surpass my goal on a bigger hill. Also, I definitely agree that a 10 speed would have picked up more speed and it would have felt more stable I bet haha
It's scary as shit doing 30 mph on a 20' bike and mine's electric and my first bike was a Schwinn Stingray 1966.
Lol yeah things got exciting in the upper 30s. ‘66 is a great year btw! 👍🏼
Well, going 40 mph is not as fast as I was going through. When my brake cable broke in half inside my brakes case when I was going down St. Croix Falls between Minnesota and Wisconsin when I was young during the 80s. My friend and I were heading out to my Dad's cabin in Wisconsin. I've had some how Managed to make it down the hill and cruising between 50 and 65 miles per Hour without having any Sort of problems with bumped in vehicles or people who are walking around on the right side of the road to look over the river. All I know is that I would not want to go through that again. Note; If any other person who is planning on a long-distance road trip. Best of go replaced your brakes cables before you go. Because of that, I have truly learned a very important lesson.
But were you on a Stingray? :) But yes either way that could have been a problem with pedestrians in the area. Glad it worked out in your favor!
i see you are leaning forward in this video.. 43 ! that awesome for an old bike.. i wonder what i can reach in my 70 drag stripper.. once i get it completed.
Yes this was a bigger hill. It was quite a long drive but it was worth it! If you feel confident and you find the right hill you can pass 40 mph too! Very cool bike btw :)
lean forward to reduce drag you may just hit the 40mph..
Thank you but I just couldn’t do it on this hill.. not that day anyway lol
Very Nice!
Thank you!
Hope all good, enjoyed the restoration.....amazing!
All is good and thank you very much! :)
Let's hear it for Park Tool grease and a decent bearing repack...! lol!
I stand behind their Park Tool lol Perhaps I should receive a sponsorship because this was a good demonstration to their quality product 😂
I had that same color Violet Schwinn Stingray in 1964, paid $70 with my own allowance! Loved that bike! 🩷🩷
Do you still have it?
OUTSTANDING!
Thank you!
I got over 35 miles an hour on my bike once going down a bridge but ended up hitting a snake and losing control and landing in a weed patch. By the time the fire ants got through with me I decided never again.
Jeez lol At high speeds like that the smallest obstruction or inconsistency could be a big problem. That sounds like a bad day but at least you were able to walk away from it!
Kick ass story though! A real rider
@@campcrafter4613 Yes and a huge development is where that field was. I still remember how quickly the front wheel started to wobble and my hand slipped off the handlebars and before I knew it I was looking at the sky. Then the ants started biting and I was on my feet taking my pants off. Got a lot of scrapes even with the heavy jeans I had on but nothing broke.
I use electrolysis for rust removal. Pits I generally solder or braze over. Electroplating is possible at home, but you need to do a lot of polishing. Never had the Schwinn sing ray but I did have the Sears Ted Williams version of a chopper bike. Once I grew tall the bike eventually was too small to ride and it sat in the garage. My parents must have thrown it away when I moved out. Had a slick rear tire, glitter banana seat, wheelie bar and glitter grips. When I was in Junior high I actually restored it down to taking the spokes off and polishing and straightening the wheels, 40 miles an hour on that thing seems suicidal.
Electrolysis is an excellent idea! I haven’t done it myself but I’ve seen videos and it seems to produce awesome results. Sorry to hear you lost your old bike back then but I think it would be neat for you to track down the same bike and do a restoration project again. I guarantee you’d feel like a kid again! The high speed videos come with a little bit of risk but it was worth it :)
❤❤❤ nice restoration, i love old Schwinns , every kid wanted a stingray when i was a kid .
Thank you! It wasn’t my era but I’m a big fan also. I’m probably the only lucky kid on my block with a Stingray 🙂
Nize video, I have 2 1959 Schwinn bikes to "rehab" since I would never want to repaint etc, some good tips as I have 3 2 speed kick backs.
That’s really neat! I’m glad to hear this video was helpful and that you’ll be saving the original paint. Have fun with refurbishment and have fun riding them! 👍🏼
WOW👌
Thank you!
I had this EXACT bike when I was 8yrs old. Same color and kickback 2 speed. I still have the chain guard. Wish I had the bike to go with it!
That’s really neat! It would be nice if you tracked one down and fixed it up. Even if you found one that was missing parts. Maybe you could install your original chain guard even!
I have one for sale. Purple 1966 frame with a Bendix blue band OD. Mine has the ram-horn handlebars and a tall sissy bar. Rebuilt the transmission, greased the bearings, new brakes, new tires so the kids could ride it.
😂😂😂❤❤❤
What thickness foam did you use?
I used what came in the kit. It’s not thick/dense enough. If you can reuse the original foam, I recommend it. Otherwise double up the foam from the kit.
That is my childhood bike. Great memories.
It was a great era from what I’ve heard 👍🏼
Which brand whitewall tires are those
The brand is Duro
can this bike be turned into an electric bike?
Now-a-days anything can be turned into electric. Look in to Swytch.
I had a purple Stingray when I was in elementary school. It even had the STP sticker on the banana seat.
You were one lucky kid! Did you ever get another one like it later on?
@@GoodTimeBikes Thanks for the reply! No, I eventually graduated to my dad's Shwinn Varsity ten speed, and then a Le Tour. I'd love to find a Stingray, even if it would need a lot of tender loving care.
@@generationjones-le8ge they’re out there! I hope you find one!

Hola que rodado es la bicicleta ?? Nuevo suscriptor un saludo desde Argentina
Thank you! They’re 20” wheel diameter
I can't believe I came across your video. While cleaning out my mother's garage, I found my sister's 1966 Schwinn Stingray which isn't it that bad of shape. I was going to find someone to restore it, but you give me hope. I'm still watching them and realize I need Schwinn tools. I'm giving the bike to her for Christmas. I also found a 1965 Schwinn Tandem which will need a lot of work.
Work on it one step at a time. Certain things you can’t do you can always take to a bike shop. Enjoy the videos and if you have any questions I’m glad to do my best to answer them. Sounds like you have a couple of pretty cool bikes. Tandems are a lot of fun and thank you!
Greetings from UK. What a wonderful job you did with that bike.very impressive indeed
Hi! Thank you very much! It’s been fulfilling and a lot of fun to ride.
bout to do my own. we have malvern star here and speedwell
You’re guaranteed to have fun! I assume you’re outside the U.S.?
You did a great job thanks for the video
Thank you and very welcome! Hopefully it helps 👍🏼
Phenomenal
Loved the series. Great project
Thank you!
Thicker foam would be nice
I have to agree with you. The old foam that I removed seems much denser and I wish I reused that instead. I still have the old foam and I’ll eventually swap it out.
@@GoodTimeBikes it looks new, awesome awesome restore.
@@JeepisJunk thank you!
you are a legend man, now u gotta test all your bikes like this before you sell them.
Lol thank you! I do have other bikes I think it would be really cool to do this with so we shall see!
@@GoodTimeBikes ill be watching. Reminds me of Ford vs. Ferrari when his wife is speeding in the car. "well i think its thrilling"!
@@Siggy_Sour lol such a good movie! This isn’t quite Ford vs. Ferrari, it could be Schwinn vs. Raleigh though 😂
crazy cool!!!!
Thank you!! :)
Haha dang that is sketchy I think I would do it on my spitfire five a lot of hills here in central coast Santa Barbara 😄
Taking risks makes life interesting am I right? I have a Spitfire from 1955 that I’ve been thinking about doing it on someday lol but we’ll see how things go. Thank you!
Wow! Nice. Great to see the bike you restored going so fast! Good Job.
Absolutely! It’s fulfilling in a way to see the old pictures of it and then to the video where it’s basically going as fast as a car. Thank you!
Super awesome!
Thank you!
Schwinn's "Violet HA" is one of the craziest paints I've ever seen. Under some lighting conditions it can look purple, under others it can look maroon, and under others it can look bright pink! ...and If worn and aged enough, it can just look like a hard maroon under any lighting. I like it, but I wish they would have stuck with the original "purple opal," that they only used in '63 & '64(?). I've got a few 'Rays. Where do you score your parts, Ebay?
Normally I’m not much of a fan of shades of purple but this is such a unique color as you described it I can’t help but to appreciate how beautiful it is! The parts I needed came from eBay and Facebook groups. Koolestuff is helpful also.
Congrats hitting 40 + mph on your classic Schwinn !!! Got to love those OBS Chevy trucks !!!
Thank you! It was quite a day! And my truck is a 93 with 224k mi on it. I drove it exactly 360 mi that day lol Not much for styling but they’re great trucks 👍🏼
I had a '66 Schwinn Sting Ray from new, I was 10 years old. It was even purple with a 2 speed kickback. I did a lot of things with it, knobby tires and solo saddle for dirt jumping and trail riding, springer front end with a skinny front tire and wide slick, repainted, reupholstered, all the stuff. I could wheelie it as far as I wanted. But I never went 43 mph on it! Well done!
That’s really neat that you enjoyed your bike so much. Plus it sounds like you learned a lot at a young age just from working on that one bike. Do you still have it? And thank you!
@@GoodTimeBikes I did learn a lot! Like don't leave Dad's tools out in the yard! LOL! I'll bet I kept it 10 years or so and then sold it to a younger friend so I could buy a motorcycle. I'm 67 and I still have a couple of Sting Ray's, lots of other bicycles and several motorcycles. Still love 2 wheels!
@@matthewsmith6486 lol that’s a valuable lesson to learn. I’m glad you have some of the bikes from your youth. I think every guy should keep his old bike. If you’re ever having a bad you can always ride your old bike to put a smile on your face.
