The live version of "Landslide" from this concert is the one that really gets me.
Landslide shows the love and respect they once had. Silver Springs shows the hurt that was still there.
Silver Springs was a breakup song about Lindsay Buckingham. Because it was dropped from their album is a big reason they broke up. From an interview of Stevie with People Magazine:
“I went to the studio and [bandmates Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham] were in the parking lot, and I got out of the car and they said, ‘We need to talk.’ That's never good,” she recalls to PEOPLE ahead of the release of her Rumours-inspired Barbie doll.
Nicks quickly learned that the duo had confronted her to share that they were scrapping her haunting masterpiece - which also happened to be about her recent split from Buckingham, 73.
“Do you mean ‘Silver Springs,’ probably the best song I've ever written?” she remembers saying to the pair. “And they're like, ‘Well, yeah. Let's move on with that.’”
The slow-build song was axed to make room for “I Don't Want to Know,” another, much shorter product of Nicks’ pen - and one that she was both less fond of and less emotionally attached to.
The look between the two of them in this song from this performance is what inspired “Daisy Jones and the Six” according to the author.
Christine McVie never gets enough credit for her keys. The opening is stunning, and her support of the guitar is wonderful throughout.
Everyone in this version of the band played a vital role.
Christine was a giant for FM. Often the glue that held the band together, she was generous in sharing the stage with Stevie (a lesser talent, IMO). I'm starting to warm up, thanks to Liz here, to Ms. Nicks. I've long thought of her as a lightweight, harmless element of a truly great band. I've followed FM since even before their beginning as a John Mayall fan.
This band fell together and is gob smacking, the level of talent each member brings.
@@alkholos Interesting take. Everyone in FM was vital, but I don't think they would have had their success without Stevie Nicks. She's a great singer with the best and most unique voice of the 3 vocalists. The songs would have still been great without her as McVie and Buckingham were stronger songwriters. But she had that front-person charisma that every great band needs.

They left this masterpiece off the album, Rumours, and the decision left Stevie devastated. It's a brilliant song.
It was a crime not to include it but supposedly the run time had no room for it, so “I Don’t Want To Know” took its place. Interesting, a song they never played live!
@@chrisbodi6470 An awful decision. I remember reading an interview with Stevie and she was gutted. I've heard other reasons than just length kept it off the album--behind the scene politics, but that was long, long ago and my memory may be spotty.
Which may explain why I've only recently heard of it.

One of the most intense performances ever put to film. The chemistry between them is absolutely electric.
I've never seen another group of people so willing to stand on a stage in front of an audience, and lean into their trauma, and their remaining love for each other. Without shame, embarrassment, or concern for what people might think. They seem compelled by the history, and the connection, regardless of consequences either good or bad.
Leaning into their trauma is such an excellet way to put it. Bravo.
But it did tear the band apart, eventually. This reunion concert in 97, I believe was the first time they played together in years and also one of the last…

I couldn’t find the words, but here they are.
Stevie thundering away at Lindsay is so powerful and beautiful. I don't think enough people give credit to Lindsay for supporting her here. He doesn't run away and hide from her, he gives her his eyes and he plays an absolutely gorgeous guitar solo. There are some that think he must feel attacked but I love how he accepts her completely in her moment of absolute power.

He gets put through the wringer by Stevie's fans but it takes two. He was instrumental in starting her career. I still think that despite their bickering today, there is great emotion and love that translates through their music. I do wish they would both stop talking trash about one another.
The way they sang this song to each other at the end is gripping. In that moment there was no audience, no bandmates, just the two of them and the message and stories moving between them.
This was the third concert. Stevie hadn't been thrilled with the other performances and told Lindsey (who was in on production, btw) that she could do it better. And... She hit it out of the park with Lindsey and the rest of Fleetwood Mac. It was real feelings from long ago, brought out for us to see for brief period of time.
He's a professional, and they both know how to play up the drama on stage to get the fans eating out of the palms of their hand. They do it all the time.
The more they hurt each other, the better their music got.

There's a lot of music written about love, but the best seemingly comes from pain. Though often the two are the same thing.
I have a really hard time imagining being professionally connected for decades to the ex I had that level of intense feelings for to say nothing of the emotional vulnerability of songwriting or performing.

I saw an interview a while back with Stevie Nicks where she was asked whether it was a situation of "beauty and the beast". Her reply was "in all honestly, we're both beasts." All the drugs can't possibly have helped.
It’s fascinating to me that a group could write all these songs about each other, make it damn clear it’s about the other person, and still be able to record it and perform it.
Old chick here….back in the late 70’s we couldn’t just pull up a song on Spotify. In order to get this beautiful song, I had to sneak into a “head shop” ( where they sold bongs and weed pipes) . They had a small vinyl record section in the back. This song was on the B-side of a 45. I paid probably $2.00 at most. I put the 45 in my backpack and biked all the way home on my 10-speed bike. I played this song over and over on my crappy little record player. Back then, it was like finding gold ! Few people even knew about this song bcuz it was never released on their album. Finally, years later, Stevie re-recorded this treasure and released it to the world. THANK YOU for FINALLY reviewing this masterpiece. Lifetime Stevie Fan ❤

I wish i had known...j was never a fan of 45s..but if they had hidden gold like that it would be worth it. As far as your original..replier..turn it over wouldnt have been anyones problem. Back then i could have told to you Stevie Nicks bra size but that 45 was not exactly common knowledge to the 15-20million who bought Rumours..because honestly who buys an album and later the 45 with the same song and an unknown b side and generally B-sides were well ....right B sides...Go Your Own Way is one of my favorite songs ever.. Id think all-timeTop Ten Outros. I learned to dance "free" to the song "Also sprach Zarathustra" by Eumir Deodato. At a party on a farm. A friend had brought his PA in his small Mercedes truck. 2x 1900W. Both towers of speakers taller than us. Police came early, next morning. Citizens from a town, some 3mls away had conplained about "the noise". Haha! We've achived a similar kind of attraction here on my brother's 18th birthday, back in 1981. We where listening to some great music. The city of Pinneberg was, too! (Living up on a hill, here.)

Admittedly, I am one of Stevie Nicks biggest fans. That being said, here Stevie Nicks' voice could potentially be the most powerful weapons in the known universe. Her hauntingly beautiful voice ABSOLUTELY nailed it. She is absolutely amazing. ❤

There was one concert on this tour that Stevie got so intense and emotional singing this that she completely froze on stage with her back to the audience, and Lindsey had to do the last verse of the song. After it was over Stevie was just there, frozen and sobbing. They had to take her back stage for a while, completely pouring down in tears...
The way she shouts "Was I just a fool?!!" kills me every time.

Most beautiful song gives me chills everytime
I was fortunate to have been in the audience to see that performance live. The electricity in that studio following this track was palpable. Everything from the history of this song being cut from the original Rumours LP due to album time constraints to Lindsey & Stevie's rocky relationship...all laid bare in that moment. Superb analysis...a truly memorable experience.

I don't think there is a better live performance of a song than this when it comes to musicianship, production, and raw emotion. I remember the first time I saw this on television, I was flabbergasted.
I have heard this song hundreds of times, but seeing Stevie and Lindsay interact during this song takes it to an entirely new level.
The way Stevie shoots daggers with her eyes at Lindsey gives me chills every time
And his response is that she only wanted to "shack" up -- no commitment. But she certainly wanted his commitment.

This is the first time I’ve watched in live, until now it’s just been a song that I enjoy when listening to their music. But after watching the music video the emotions of this video have changed my thoughts on it, truly, unbelievable. The vigor behind her signing and soft and smoothness of his guitar solo. Beautiful.

Not the most famous of the Fleetwood Mac songs, but this is one of the all time best. Wow, Stevie's voice is incredible.
Silver Springs was the B side to Go Your Own Way if you're old enough to remember 45 records. It was not on the album. Stevie, Lindsey, and Christine brought it to a new level in The Dance. One of their best performances ever.

That's how if first experienced it, on a 45 B side. It blew me away. It's been my favorite of since the 80s.
Yes, I think there is a note of vengeance and bitterness but not as much as in the orginal because her voice has mellowed over time. Still, the obvious anguish is heartbreaking even now.
Stevie gave the rights to the song to her mom and her mom never got a penny before The Dance.
Where I lived Silver Springs was #5 on the charts (Go Your Own Way #1) Go sold out and had to be repressed, and they decided to put Go on both sides. As soon as it was announces Springs was not going to make the album there was a huge rush as everyone went out to buy the single (all of which was credited to GO). But it left room for The Chain, so it worked out.
A great privilege of my life was being at this concert filmed on a soundstage at Warner Bros in front of a live audience.

The only thing harder than performing genuine emotion, is performing THROUGH genuine emotion. Stevie's strength and fortitude transcend humanity.
The fact they hated and loved each other so much made their music so much better, as bad as that is. She literally is fighting through tears.
Probably top three greatest live performances of all time, just for the weight of the message and who's delivering it. Stevie Nick's doesn't even care where she is and is probably only slightly aware of her surroundings once she starts singing. Perfection.
Stevie was the "IT" girl for me growing up in the 70's. For such a disfunctional band, they were amazing.
McVie was the powerhouse talent. She just wasn’t as pretty.
I remember when Rumours hit the world. Stevie Nick's was a movement on her own, she sent the band into the stratosphere. Definitely the IT girl of the 70s. Others like Ann Wilson and Linda Ronstadt and Olivia Newton John were phenomenal singers too
The Who and Fleetwood Mac were both amazing bands with lots of internal conflict, struggle within the band ... And bands that monopolized on this conflict, especially in the live show.
@@FHLeghorn No! Christy was an amazing talent for sure but Fleetwood Mac had been around for a long time before Stevie and Lindsy joined and they hadn't had any hits. They didn't go platinum until the writing of both Lindsy and Stevie and the emotional power and distinctiveness of Stevie's voice.
Stevie is still very much an "IT" even to this day that woman is a queen. (And that is taking nothing from Christy who was a queen in her own rights

This was how you perform a song live on stage. Every part of it is BETTER than perfect.
It doesn’t matter how many times I watch this performance, I’m always in tears by the end. Stevie lets him have it, and he just nods at her, like ‘come on, let it out.’ That wasn’t contrived, not even a little. There’s another performance of this song out there from the same tour where she does lose it at the end. I understand. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over the heartbreak of leaving an almost 30 year marriage bc he cheated. I’m right there with her, ever single time.

I love your facial expressions when hearing Stevie’s voice. You just get wrapped up in her voice like a snuggly hug and can’t help falling in love with that woman and her soulful amazing voice. One of the best rock singers ever. One of the best bands ever.
My favourite part of the song is the chorus. The emotion in the verses: Sadness - *"Time casts a spell on you, but you won't forget me! I know I could've loved you but you would not let me!"* then later anger! She's pissed off at Lindsay over something - *"I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you! You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you!"* The more the song continues, the more angry she seems, the more *forceful* she sounds as she sings these verses. I always end up crying by the time the song is over. 😥
I always drop tears by the end of this performance, when she starts casting her spell and looking at Buckingham, you can see her cheeks get flush, one of my favorite live performances of all time. Unbelievable.
Stevie Nicks is a world treasure. Amazing singer and songwriter...I used to sing it to my now husband we were boyfriedn and girfriend as a young couple, when I was really scared of falling in love and so, broke up with him. 18 years after, we got together again and got married, thanks to Stevie`s lovely and powerful spell song Silver Springs...I sang it over the years as a mantra

I was there that night on the Warner Bros Lot for this concert. It was a magical night. This song, Stevie is singing about Lyndsey and their heartbreaking relationship & break-up. And when you see her looking at him singing in that powerful emotional voice and he's looking back at her....Oh my, and caught on tape for us to see and feel forever. I'll never forget that night.
I first saw this concert on a PBS pledge drive & when we got to the end I was riveted by both their expressions!
I've listened to this recording probably a couple hundred times by now, and somehow, I'd never caught that little waver on the final phrase that sounds like she's holding back tears. Incredible. Thank you for your attention to those little details.

1. Rhiannon, the 1976 Midnight Special performance. Later performances are much different. Still remarkable, but not extraordinary in the way the 1976 version is.
The rumor I've heard is that she changed how she sang to protect her voice since the intensity she reaches in '76 was too much.
This song shakes me to the core every time. So much emotion and meaning.
That's a great way of describing it. I feel the same way. Shaken.
To sit there for three decades and have to perform with your ex.....who the song is about.....over and over and then write new stuff, that's also about your ex, who you then again have to perform with for decades.

I love the way Stevie and Lindsey rehash their old relationship on stage whenever they're together. Some feelings just can't go away.
The moment when Stevie Nicks turns to Lindsey Buckingham and screams "never get away" over and over gives me chills every time!
Also, everything on the "Rumours" album is written from one member to another, back and forth. Both couples in the band were splitting up as they were making this album and basically created a masterpiece.
There is another live video of this song being performed on UA-cam where Stevie loses it at the end, Lindsey goes over to hug her, and Christine has to sing the last line to complete the song. Chilling.

I doubt AI could ever come close to Fleetwood mac performing "im so afraid" Lindsey's solo is full of emotion, such a great vocalist and amazing on that guitar

Agreed. I like this arrangement overall a little better, but both versions are amazing.
Their live performances of "The Chain" from 1982 and 1997 and the way they fuel each other in their ad-libs and emotion is truly incredible. The 1982 live performance may be one of the most visceral performances I have ever seen. The amount of primal emotion during that performance is very uncomfortable to watch while at the same time, being extremely beautiful. But the 1997 performance feels quite different in that it feels more painful and regretful but is equally beautiful. One of my all time favorite bands.

I remember seeing the VH1 Behind the Music on Fleetwood Mac and they described that while Christine and John kept their divorce private, Lindsey and Stevie made their breakup public by bleeding on vinyl with these amazing songs.

Anyone who thinks this is just theatrics must not be aware of the last time these people got together 10 years earlier (10 years AFTER "Rumours.") Lindsey and Stevie got in to a physical altercation at a band meeting (hitting, choking!), Stevie screaming "You broke my heart!" that was followed by Lindsey leaving the band. Coupled with the history of the song rarely being performed live and being left off the LP if you think the emotions should have been gone by then you just don't get it.
This songs absolutely breaks my heart every single time. This is my all time favorite version, watching them look at each other while performing live is just gut-wrenching. "You'll never get away from the sound of a woman that loves you."

This performance brings tears to my eyes every time. Stevie was quite hurt when the song was cut from the studio album for lack of space, it ended up a b-side. Lots of emotion in this band at the time. In the CD age it got restored.

Never have the history of the broken romance in a band, the lyrics of a song, and the performance of the two ex-lovers during the playing of that song been captured live. Lindsey’s melancholy solo, Stevie’s voice, and both of them turning towards each other at the end. One of my favorite songs and performances ever.

I saw Stevie live in Dublin last week. At 76 years young she was spectacular. A privilege to witness such a songwriter and performer. She spoke lovingly about all the relationships in the band over the years, about losing Christine, connecting to a life of incredible creativity.

This particular live concert film cemented their place in history. It's both a perfect comeback, and a distillation of what the band had been and still was.
This song, specifically this live version will forever live rent free in my head, and it will never stop giving me goose bumps and tears in my eyes. I haven't loved and lost like that, but unreciprocated love is also painful and this just punches my gut every time (and I love it!) One of the best songs/performances ever.

I was once asked who I thought were the most underrated guitarists. Everyone who knows me would've expected a metal guitarist - but all the really good ones are well known and regarded for it. My answer was Lindsey Buckingham. The dude is absolutely incredible. Check out the interview sometime where he explains how he plays "Looking Out For Love." That sounds like about 5 guitars, but it's just him, and it's all technique. Such an incredible talent. Not just him, either. Each member of this band has more talent in their pinkies than many bands have in the whole ensemble.

It’s a quite fine group of musicians. Stevie’s voice has tons of personality, Lindsay is one of the most musically gifted guitarists and Mick’s drumming is always great. Great musicianship combined with all that chemistry between the members of the band is a such a brilliant combination.
I LOVE watching Mick play the drums. He plays with such abandon! The look of JOY on his face when she paused the video tells the story perfectly. Also, why, oh why do people not get that Linsay is staring right back at her without wavering? That his eyes are piercing also.
The stare down between Lindsey and Stevie is so intense. That’s a lot of love, hate, regrets and remorse. God it made for some amazing music! Love to them both

Mick always struck me as just sort of the happy goofball in the group. Although he also had an affair with Stevie, after she broke up with Lindsey (and after she broke up with Don Henley). Stevie said her affair with Mick was "doomed" and caused a lot of pain for everyone (especially Lindsey), but that it was also a "great love affair" and that she wouldn't trade the experience in a million years.

Mick used to have home videos up on YT of them all during a break in the tour in Hawaii with Micks wife and young daughters. Stevie's also said the affair wouldn't have happened if they were always the last at the party and coked to the gills.
Yes, Stevie and Lindsay exchange a LOT of Emotion, now Old but never lost its razor edge... But Lindsay is also the "Conductor" of the whole Show, and the entire band watches him for cues about timing, tempo, keys etc. He's quite excellent at guiding them all into this Emotional Plateau, yes?
This is one of the greatest performances in all of rock n' roll history. I could go on and on about all of the things that make this a complete masterpiece.

Saw this tour, it was amazing. 20 feet from stage right, right to the side of Christine's piano. Seeing Mic and John smoking in the tunnel during the Lindsey and Stevie's set by them selves. And a super drunk lady on the front row, right where the spotlights would light her up . It was great. My sister's first ever concert.
