One of my favorite things about Lindsey is a quality he shares with Brian May, which is whenever he does do an instrumental section or solo, he fits it to the song perfectly with trying to be super flashy or crazy. This song is about the changes and challenges of life, which Stevie Nicks wrote "Landslide" in 1974 in Aspen's snow country, while her then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham was on tour with Don Everly. Stevie Nicks has said in interviews that the song was about her romance with Lindsey Buckingham and their career struggles, as well as her relationship with her business-executive father. Her months in the mountains inspired the lines with the song's title, "And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills/‘Til the landslide brought me down.", which one verse contains questions that most of us ask ourselves at one time or another:
Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
It's an emotional lyric and while it may seem simple, the introspection of those words resonated with millions of record buyers.

@@joannecunliffe8067every iteration of this song over the years has revealed something new to me. I'd love to hear analysis of early versions of Landslide and the comparison to later versions, the changing word emphasis, the natural changes age has on the voice/vocal chords, and just how life has a way of revealing layers that weren't even intended when a song was written.
When it comes to vulnerability, simple yet complex guitar phrasing, and the overall feel of a song, I wonder what you'd make of Ryan Bingham's song Darlin. There's something in it that makes me feel much like I do listening to Landslide, though the journey of the songs are quite different. Maybe it's also related to Ryan and Stevie both embracing their natural voices as opposed to conforming to what a label thinks will sell.
As you look at the Fleetwood Mac catalog, I do hope you take time to listen to Honey Hi from Tusk. It's beautiful and gets nowhere near the love it deserves.

    • @joannecunliffe8067
      @joannecunliffe8067 3 місяці тому +1

@@JoanieBC I'd never heard of Ryan Bingham before but I did check out "Darlin'". It's a pretty song (he's very gravelly, isn't he?) although I'm not a massive country music fan myself - more rock, blues, UK folk music and classical music. I love John Denver's "Rhymes and Reasons", Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble", Cam's "Mayday" and many songs sung by "Home Free" if we're on that genre. As an example of fabulous songs which make me cry - try Suzanne Vega's "Gypsy", Marillion's "Beautiful", Rush "Tears" (don't pre-judge based on the band - it's a gentle wonderful song), Adele's "Easy on Me", Martina McBride "Concrete Angel", Tracy Chapman "Baby, can I hold you", Mike and the Mechanics "The Living Years", Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" and Chris De Burgh "The Tower". I think that's enough of a list! If I was to add one more, it would probably be Justin Hayward's "The best is yet to come" (yes I am that soppy!). Best wishes, Jo.

Our tickets were behind the stage, which at first I thought would mean we had the worst angle to watch them perform. Throughout most of the concert, their backs were to us.
Instead, it allowed us to witness perhaps the most magical moment of the entire concert. During one of the interludes of the song "Landslide", Stevie turned her back to main audience and was facing us. She brought her hand up to her eyes to dry her tears. Maybe he had been thinking about his last semester and all of the unknowns and uncertainties that would follow. But, I could tell when he played it on a road trip during the holidays, he was playing it for himself and not me. He knows he can talk to me about anything, and does. Hello, Elizabeth. I'm glad you and your family are doing well now. Happy to see you're back. 😊
I'm so glad this iconic performance was captured on video. I'm very eager to see your breakdown of Stevie's vocal performance, the music behind it, and of course, the interplay between Stevie and Lindsay as the song plays out. As some others have said here, I hope you also analyze the live version of "Silver Springs", as taken from this same concert. Keep enjoying the music, Elizabeth!

Stevie is phenomenal as a performer and songwriter. Lyndsey is another level above. He's a virtuoso on guitar making complicated lines look simple. The duets he does with Stevie are the best. Their story is incredible too. I feel like in today's music world these two would have been left behind. Managers wouldn't have let Lyndsey give an ultimatum of having Stevie join Fleetwood Mac with him. But back then they were just like fine, bring her along, and the rest is history. We are all lucky that happened.

As I move into spitting distance of the age of 70 years, I am ever more delighted and amazed by the power of these singer-songwriters to capture the experience of changing and aging ... when they were in their 20s(!) Thank you for providing the expertise I lack to help me understand how the music, both vocal and instrumental, help carry the message, both intellectually and emotionally.

Stevie wrote the song before her, and Lindsay became famous. This song is about making a choice, whether or not to continue in the music business or to go back to college and give up on her dreams. She wrote this song and a beautiful home overlooking the snow, covered hills in Colorado, and It’s about deciding to stick with your dreams or two sort of go back to reality and live a so-called normal life. Right after the song was written, Fleetwood Mac asked her and Lindsay to join the band. So this song is really about following your dreams and making choices, that can affect your entire life

Fleetwood Mac is at the top of my list of all-time favorites and Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie are two of the reasons why. "Landslide" is a miracle. Even now when I hear it, especially when I watch this video, it's like falling in love all over again. I mean really falling in love, not infatuation, not "puppy love," but really falling in love. Watching your face as you went through this analysis expressed it perfectly. Her expressions of yearning, doubts, questions and reflections was reflected by your appreciation of her, and our own universal vulnerabilities. Even Lindsey Buckingham was enraptured with the spell she cast on that stage. A heartfelt "thank you" to Stevie Nicks, to all of Fleetwood Mac, and to you for sharing your own connection to this beautiful, soulful artistry.

I would love to see a reaction of the voice of kd lang. She graciously accepted the reigns to Hallelujah, by fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen, the songwriter of said song. I would say you are spot on with your analysis. Lindsey is a genius in his own right with his style of playing guitar. And the lyrics, although originally intended to indicate a personal relationship involving just two people, have evolved into a totally different interpersonal relationship with her audience/fans/supporters...a subtle fear and concern that, with the passage and ravaging of time, how will she (and WE) handle it when she has been robbed of her ability to entertain us...a concept around which she has built her life? Time deepens this song like no other I can recall.

Talking about being touched by emotion … some time you might want to review “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman. Specifically her performance at the Nelson Mandella tribute in 1988 when she sang it as a replacement for Stevie Wonder who cancelled at the last second due to technical difficulties. The song that launched her career. Or if you want a completely a cappella song, then “Behind the Wall” from that same concert.
I revisited “Fast Car” after the performance on this year’s grammy’s. Both would be a perfect song for international woman’s day.

One of my all-time favorite songs from one of my all-time favorite voices. Song makes me get choked-up every time I hear it…particularly this specific live version. A song that actually makes me think about my relationship with my father (who wasn’t around much when I was growing up and died when I was 23) and my four children, three of the whom are now in their 20’s. You begin to notice how the relational dynamics change, and are supposed to. Still, it’s emotionally difficult as you allow them to live life in their particular directions and from each of their unique persons. Along with that, changes, challenges, joys, griefs and strange cultural shifts play into the ‘landslide’ experiences. As difficult as it can be, I’m reminded that somehow, everything belongs; and there is ultimately remarkable beauty to be found in it all…even as it is not all beautiful.
And your analysis of the song and Stevie’s voice are so wonderful. The uniqueness of it has always had a hold on me…and don’t get me started on her vibrato. Thanks so much for sharing.
