This might actually be the best acoustic guitar under $5k. I went looking for a new acoustic recently and played pretty much everything under $7k. The Slash J-45 hands down was the best feeling, sounding and playing. I don’t know what magic they sprinkled on this thing but it definitely worked. My god! I left the store and tried to put it out of my mind for several weeks. I mean I have a Guild D55, Martin OOO, and J2000 already. Needless to say, I figured out a way to buy the Slash and I literally wake up every day with the strongest desire to play it until I can’t anymore. I haven’t felt that for a guitar since I was 14. That, in and of itself, is worth any price. It’s like that one girlfriend you cannot keep your hands off of. Damn you Gibson!!!
I also have the slash j45 and a j45 standard ,I never would’ve thought they could make the 45 sound and play better with it being my favorite acoustic of all time but somehow they have , I absolutely love both but the slash model has a little extra something that brings it to the forefront, amazing instrument
Hi. They mention the neck is fat in this video. Do you feel this has a fat neck? There are none of these in my town to play so I cannot “try before I buy”. Thanks.
yo this guy's got a J2000.
I recently bought a Gibson Cantrell fire devil, it would stand up to the slash model.
It isn't the best guitar under 5k, you can get hand made for that price or some lesser known brands that are better. Gibson is popular and has jacked up prices.
Gibson will put the Slash signature on anything to sell it. I’m looking forward to the Slash Bass and then the Slash Banjo.
SLASH COFFEE, SLASH CONDOMS AND SLASH WHISKEY JKJKJK
......yes, I'm waiting for the Limited Edition Slash signature version of Slash's signature!
true but slash does play j-45s
Super funny!
Don't forget the Slash dulcimer.
I just bought the slash J45 in the vermillion red. It was actually cheaper than a standard because I bought it for a great price. It's a very decent guitar indeed and that color is stunning. I prefer it over the standard.
No kidding you bought the one you prefer?
Captain meets Molly - damn that would be a great episode. Molly is already one of the all time great bluegrass players
Adam James Rogers Oh! I thought you meant... never mind. Would surely be entertaining though.
I just got the Epiphone version of this from Anderton's on sale for GBP599. I tried about 15 different large body guitars there in the 400-1500 range - J45s, 200s, Hummingbirds, etc from Gibson, Epiphone, Sigma, Fender, etc. I'd never heard of this one and didn't have a clue what it was until after I'd played it and then looked at the tag.
It just blew me away. A massive, rich sound with thumping bass and defined, bell-like top notes. One or two of the competition looked nicer and some felt more expensive with satin necks, etc but nothing even came close to the sound, not even the other Epiphone and standard Gibson J45s. I tried out 3 of the Slash ones and struggled to tell which was best as all had different aged strings, but they all sounded superb to me.
It's a pig to play with a huge V at the neck end, flattening to a C at the body. The action is bit high so I need to set it up to suit me. I've seen reviews saying the pickup is no good, but I got this for song writing and mic recording so don't much care. It's heavy and solid like a tank. The look of it is fine but not the most beautiful for me.
But I simply don't care, the unplugged sound is just something else and recalled so many famous recordings to me that I can't wait to use myself. It's massive and articulate, far more than any of the others I tried. I can only assume that the thick neck and low V, much chunkier then anything else I tried, really does have an impact on the sound, which makes sense to me. Maybe Slash and Gibson know a bit about guitars? Can't wait to get to work with it.
I'll sand the neck to satin, lower the action and put on thinner strings, then... FUN!
You should have showed close ups of the neck on this guitar as well as on the standard J and talked more about the advantages and disadvantages of the neck difference , and who it is more suited for. This review could have been so much better.
I agree, thats why im on the fence..
fr. the one major difference between these two guitars and they spend 5 seconds talking about it before moving on.
Captain definitely needs to meet both Molly Tuttle & Billy Strings. They are in my top 5 favorite guitarists right now.
They are the new rock stars. It makes me so happy that music hasn't died.
Gets the giggles, doesn't miss a beat. Ben's awesome.
This is insane guys the sound on this J-45 is out of this world. Fantastic review I know this isn’t right but I can compare the sound to a Martin DR-35 Then again the strings play a big part as well.
Amazing video as always Captain & Ben ❤🤟😎 It sure isn't monday though 😂😉
Lovely video! Please do a review of the new 2020 Taylor GS Mini models as its been a long time since those have been reviewed and they are fresh!
My favorite acoustic I've played so far, and I'm a Martin lover. Not that they sound anything alike, but the slash j45 just down right sounds awesome.
You can pick up 5 different J45's or Martin d41's which is what I have and they will all sound somewhat different. That's the beauty of an acoustic guitar. Play it and enjoy it.
In a Music Villa video they did just that: they took four “identical” brand new J 45s and compared them and there were differences in sound.
Ha ha , I have a 2014 D-41 and must’ve played almost 10 different
D-41’s before I decided on which one to keep... I kept the best sounding one to me ... 😉
I’m going through the same thing with the J-45 standard now... 😃
I thought about the slash model but the up charge is a little hard to justify since I’m not a Slash fan... 😂
I played one yesterday, there is definitely something special about it.
Great shoutout to Tony Rice, wipes the floor with most.
Just bought one from Walt Grace Vintage in Miami. I tried a bunch...and this one was....Mindblowing.
That was weird I was sceptical at first but the standard sounded muted after hearing the Slash model, just need to change the truss rod cover and away you go.
really like these demonstration videos. they are relevant and to the point. thank you
Wow this actually settled my purchase. Great video guys. Thanks.
They didn’t sound different... but he was SOOOOO much for comfortable on the Slash model. Anything Slash touches....
Very good review. One comment I have is that the audio seems to have a problem.
You must have forgotten Doc Watson.but I like the video and the j-45 I just bought. I feel the same about the shorter scale length. You really can tell the difference when you come back to the martins. You definitely have a softer feel with the j-45. I have two martins the d-35 and hd-28 but the j-45 is a nice change. Don't get me wrong but I still love my martins.
The standard had more treble to me. I preferred the Slash one. Another vote to get Molly Tuttle on!
My Slash ukulele is the best I’ve ever played.
Can we get a comparison between the slash j45 epiphone vs slash gibson j45.
I played both today, also played a Martin d18. The Epiphone j45 slash sounded the best, it's funny but with acoustics they all have a character of their own. Sometimes more money doesn't mean sounds better.
That tonal difference you are hearing, is it the neck, or is the pickguard on the standard model muffling the soundboard just ever so slightly?
Hello thank you for reviewing this beautiful guitar Slash j45, I like to ask what king of string did you use this acoustic!? Thank you in advance!
The Gibson factory fits 12's to this guitar. Not sure which brand. 0.053, 0.042, 0.032, 0.024, 0.016, 0.012
I have one. Don' t really care about Slash. But its a really nice guitar and I buy what appeals to me.
Nice guitars! The slight difference in sound could also come down to the strings. Do they have the same brand and gauge strings on them?
I owned a J-45 for 6 years. It sounded fantastic and smelled amazing, but it would not stay in tune and had awful intonation. I eventually sold it, but I'd love to get my hands another one day. The Slash model is definitely NOT the one I would get though. They're pricey, but the custom shop models are enticing.
I hear that a lot. Why do you think they don’t stay in tune ?
You should have had your guitar tech file and lube the nut slots. Also when restringing you must give them a good tug 3 times during the tuning. 3 separate times. Otherwise they wont stay set
@@lynncarter4964 I agree that the nut probably contributed to the tuning issues, but the intonation is an entirely different issue. It shipped with a compensated bridge already, so I'm not really sure why the guitar was so out of tune up the neck. Anyway, I ended up buying a Martin J-40 a couple years ago and it is perfect. It doesn't do the "J-45" thing, but it sounds wonderful, stays in tune, and intonates perfectly.
Could the lack of pickguard let the top vibrate more freely, affecting the tone?
Guys can you compare this J-45 vs Maton TE1? I'm not sure if you guys saw Slash and Myles rare acoustic performance on Max session but I believe they were playing Maton TE1 and would like to see a comparison. Thanks
What strings do you recommend for a J 45 standard ?
I haven't watched any andertons for awhile, but if Ben is new he seems like a cool guy and good addition!
Great review,and playing is super,,nice..
That intro was awesome, need to do a captain and Pete whistling blindfold test
Slash played like 5 times on an acoustic for as far as i know.. we need a slash signature trumpet!
I heard Slash played Duff's bass once
*Gibson: New for 2022 the Slash signature bass guitar*
@@jacobarmstrong5308 maybe in preschool he played a recorder once!
*slash signature recorder*
The Slash sounds brighter and a tad louder than the standard. The standard sounds softer than the slash. I think I still like the standard maybe even the studio. I wish we had them around where I lived so I could go in and AB them to get the sense of them in person. Central Florida sucks when it comes to acoustic guitar selection compared to Maryland. There I said it and its what it is. I love the weather, not the music stores in Central Florida.
What if the tone difference is the pick guard? Or lack thereof?
Does the Slash model have something different done to the bracing?
Will the slash models hold value like the typical standard?
For sure, even more rare.
Did slash play a j45 standard before the slash j45 custom
Guitarist? Tommy Emmanuel hands down. The guitars? Each slightly different, but each wonderful. No need for the Slash edition IMVHO, if not for the gorgeous red burst.
I watched an acoustic gig that Slash did with Miles Kennedy in Australia. An interviewer asked him what kind of guitar he was playing. He said they were 'loaners' and he didn't know. They were very clearly TE model Matons, made in Australia! I just got a little chuckle from that... LOL 8)
The Molly and Billy shout-out is what made me smash the like button!
The J45 also has a 12" neck radius vs the Martin's flatter 16", more comfy IMHO. My 1952 J45 has a rather beefy neck also. I'd love to try a Slasher if that does also! The '52 is asking to be retired to the music room, getting too old to gig. 8)
My '61 is perfect
If it's a good guitar, it's a good guitar. I don't care who's name is on it, but having several Gibson's myself, why the F not? I'm in.
The Captain must have seen the Molly Tuttle signature guitar at the Preston Thompson booth at NAMM and thought who is that.
Nice nice demo,
I would take standard over slash,
The core sounds is more balanced and malleable in Standard vs. more pronounced mids on Slash - which is great for a solo instrumental performer.
J45 Standard would be better for a singer songwriter setup better I guess.
I compared them both today and chose the Slash version. It sounded demonstrably better than the Standard; fuller, richer, and better balanced. In comparison, the Standard model sound thinner. Not sure if it’s a spec, but the spruce top on the Standard wasn’t nearly as nice as the Slash version. I’m not really a Slash fan, but the guitar was indisputably superior to the Standard…at least on the ones I tried!
@@keithbrawley3841 Great to hear, I’ll check it out. Enjoy J45 Slash - was that a vermillion burst by any chance?
@@VaibhavMittalIndia
No, I chose November Burst. I like the sound a lot! Full and louder…it’s an especially nice spruce top, so it may just be the characteristics of this guitar rather than the model.
If you like Molly Tuttle, then you should check out Billy Strings.
Billy is amazing. One of the best for sure
When are you going to invite Mr. Saul Hudson to your studio?
jahsus23 I guess he has an open invitation, but he probably haven’t put it into his schedule yet.
He never does that kind of thing
@@mouloudo Not so fast, he joined Nikki Sixx in his studio one time
The slash has a more distinctive low end, and it’s more prominent, as I noticed when you played them in the comparison. I would love to own the slash model, the price is only obstacle, even by Gibson standards, it’s pricey! 🤣
Look at the epiphone slash j45, I played one today in vermilion burst and it sounds nicer then the Gibson slash j45 and the Martin d18 I tried. I bought it. :)
@@peterm3159 that's some major cope.
Joe Walsh's riff was in it😆 ♪Hotel California 〜
The plugged-in sound wasn't too bad on this. I've seen a video of Ian Meadows (?) demoing an L-00 Studio with the same pickup and the plugged-in sound was dire; horribly broken-up tinny bitty sound, more like a bad computer approximation of an acoustic guitar than the real thing.
In my opinion acoustic guitars only sound great when you mic them up. So thanks for that
Slash model seems a Little bit darker and less sparkly to my ears, maybe it's Just this specific Guitar!
Every acoustic sounds different. Every Slash J45 will sound different. As they age they will sound different. Get the one you prefer the feel of.
Tony Rice is an acoustic picking master!!!
Does anybody know if the J185 is short or long scale? I would love a maple jumbo, but don't care for long scale guitars. Thanks in advance if anyone can help with this question.
A google search for "Gibson J-185 scale length" revealed the following featured snippet:
"The Gibson J-185 is proof that guitars, like baseball, are a game of inches. When Gibson introduced it in 1951, they intended to offer flat-top lovers a jumbo guitar with a slightly different flavor from the J-200. So, they shortened the scale length from 25.5" to 24.75" and made the body slightly smaller."
@@gvtshorts2024 OK thanks for the info
how are these different from a regular J45 ? is it just the color+symbol? or are the woods superior?
Money Train.
Billy Strings is probably the best acoustic player at the moment. Let him design a new guitar and name it.
B/J-45
The standard sounds better, isn't it?
Honestly, and idk why, j45 standard sounds better to me, I try a j45 slash series one time and...neck kinda sock, but still a good guitar y’now...but standard and 50’s are better hahah.
See, fat neck / thin neck tonal differences makes a Parton-tits-worth more sense to me than the frigging lacquer making a difference to tone. The strings are tied to one end of a neck, and tensioned along it, the amount of mass there and where on the neck it is seems bound to affect the sound, to me. You should look at a long bow being tuned, a bowyer can adjust the way a bow flexes and its draw weight by taking shavings from the stave at various places.
So true. The V to C shape and general chunkyness reminds me of the variety in cricket bat shapes, with thicker bits in the sweet spot. I think the tone difference if a thick neck would be far less on an electric, mainly just more sustain, but on an unplugged acoustic the difference is very noticeable.
I love Gibson and I love Slash but I do wish they’d stop slapping his name on every model they make, pretty sure there’ll be a Slash ES-150 soon at this rate.
The video starts with patience.. funny that in the record all guitars are Guilds😜
for youtube sack...please play that until finish.we not mind with whistle.
Regarding 'flatpicking' (mentioned at 6:35): the great Doc Watson popularised the style in the 1960s (I remember the huge impact he made in those days!), but there are other great players, each with their own innovative distinctive style.
I'd never say that one is better than another.
Listen for example to Don Reno, Clarence White, Dan Crary, Norman Blake, George Shuffler, Mark O'Connor, Trey Hensley and Jake Workman as well as Billy Strings, Tony Rice, Molly Tuttle and Steve Kaufman.
Here's 14-year old (yes, 14!) Mark O'Connor winning the National Flatpicking Championship in 1975 with the Don Reno banjo tune 'Dixie Breakdown':
ua-cam.com/video/Z5ZvMUlZU9k/v-deo.html
Voting starts now.
Who would you have design a new J-45.
Please note this is just for fun.
Lil wayne or dot wiggin
James Taylor
Keef.
I love watching Ben. He always looks like he is having so much fun and he can play the snot out of a guitar.
The Standard sounds much more authentic.
This is like a guitar psychology 😂
Flat picking?
One word Monte Montgomery ur welcome
Yeah, it sounds fatter. I think it's the Slash signature that makes the difference.
Sounds like an acoustic guitar should do. No more or less
The standard sounds so much better
It would have been nice to hear them without being plugged in..........
Right... whats the point ?
What's funny is that Slash plays Guild acoustics. mic drop. 🎤
Mason Curtis Well... yes... sometimes he does. But certainly not exclusively. It’s perfectly easy to find evidence of Slash owning and playing Gibsons. There’s even a video of him playing live with a Maton acoustic (an Australian brand) but if you do a casual search of UA-cam videos where he’s playing acoustic I think you’ll find that in the majority of cases he’s playing a Gibson. 🤷🏼♂️
He's playing a Gibson J45 on Patience live. He also has a guild that I know of, and of course his butt ugly guild double neck acoustic/electric. I think I've seen him with a Martin, too. He has a huuuuge arsenal of tools and toys to throw in when needed
Standard for me....
A thousand more expensive and no binding no better pickup no better wood? Only for the signature and the neck 😅 for leaving the usual production, I don't think it's worth it
Gezz it’s Monday already 🤦🏻♂️😢
£800 for the Slash 'signature' - Ahm oot!
Paying for the name. Could probably get something as good 1/3 the price.
I can't tell the difference. I think I'll slash my wrists.
Surely not having a pick guard makes a bigger difference than the size of the neck.
Still, in my experience standard J45s are like snowflakes, if snowflakes were mostly utter shite. I’ve always wanted one but the only decent ones lately are the Vintage models, which are eye-wateringly expensive. There’s so much variation in the standard that picking just one to compare with is like A/B-ing Kanye West interviews. I can’t think of a better smack down of Gibson quality control than this right here. Same spec, and yet they sound so different that it doesn’t even sound like the same model.
They should just take a bunch of standards and call them the Axl Rose model: random as the lottery and just not as good as the old version.
First! Great sounds!
Well, Ben and I disagree on this
You guys are funny
The standard J-45 sounds way better
Why do they demo with amplification. Such a waste of a demo.
The pickup isn't in play until close to the end of the video. Prior to that the guitars are plugged in, but the amp is turned down.
You can buy wayyyy better for wayyyy less.
very BAD miked, I've watched several videos of this guitar that sounds awesome, here sounds thin and lifeless and twangy EDIT (I exaggerated a little bit but still my point still kind of stands).
