This is genuinely the best "faster crocheting" video. Usually they are "Do these exact steps! THE END" And this video was "Here are a few techniques and options. Try what works for you!" Much more useful in my opinion. Also hook under vs yarn over was SO helpful!!

The best tip I give is take your time and be proud of your work. I'm hosting a handcraft club and have several people who never knitted or crocheted. I'm proud of them , willing to learn at the age of 75, and doing great. Of course you need patience with the newbys but I like their determination to persevere. My mantra is not the speed is important but the joy in the finished product.
I absolutely agree, Wally! Even just being willing to try a new skill is something to be proud of. You don't have to be great at a hobby to really enjoy it. It can be fun and rewarding right from the start. When I finally learned to knit after trying for so long, I enjoyed being bad at knitting more than I enjoyed being good at crochet! 🙂

My grandma's name was Goldie as well, she loved to crochet too. I just had to comment on this video because our gramdmas had the same name. But also when you said your grandma would read while crocheting I said out loud "read?" , there is no way, WOW . I listen to audio books, but no way could I read while crocheting. This was the best video. I've been crocheting for 6 years now and I tend to move slower but this made me realize it all came down to comfort. I didn't realize until I paid attention that I'm always adjusting and getting up and also getting distracted since I'm not completely comfortable. This was also really nice to be reassured that it isn't a race and not everyone has the same speed. Thank you for the video. ❤

This was my favorite tip! They were all great but this was the top. I belong to a group where they frog everything, any little errant stitch three rows back causes massive yarn pulling. Such a waste of time, sigh.
Your tip about finding a hook that works for you is priceless! I got a plastic in-line with a bit of a grip and lord was it the worst! I love the in-line metal ones with no grip they are life/love lol
The hook makes such a big difference! I wanted to try one that has a stick/row counter built in, but I know I would hate working with it because of the shape. I'm glad you found what you like! 😊
I wanted to thank you for how you described these tips, it was a really unique combination that I've not seen in many other tip videos! ❤️ I also have to admit that I got a bit giddy, as I watched through the tips to see that I was already doing most of these tips naturally! Wow, maybe I HAVE leveled up! 😂🤣 I self taught myself Crochet, for therapy, by watching videos on UA-cam 2 years ago, but still consider myself a novice. I've noticed recently that I seem to get a project done faster but had not thought about the way I have adapted (trying diff hooks, furls all the way! Or how I hold my yarn and feel ahead so I can watch true crime 🤔🤣) as being a contributing factor! ❤️ I feel like such a Rockstar right now, and it's thanks to all the people who make amazing videos, like you! I have always done it that way, too, without knowing any different. Maybe it's how my grandmother taught me, but that was so long ago, I can't remember!

The hook under is something i never thought about! I heard people talk abt it, but i thought it didn’t matter. I tried for like 3 rows, and i’m never going back xD

Hiiii, you covered a lot of things I am doing and a couple of things I did not think of. A decision over the last couple of years I’d use up the hoard of undesirable type of yarn to master my technique. It’s cheap no great loss but in doing so it ‘ pursuaded ‘ me to amend .
Instead of using my wrist and index fingers predominantly I roll the hook with the minutest of movement on the tips of my ring finger and pinky. This is to work with a $1.75 ball of acrylic that did take some conditioning over a long time. It is worth it mass producing simple stitch
6 inch doll bases. Done in 4 hours complete with features as opposed to the 15inch paw patrol ‘Chase’ police dog with multiple techniques I was adept, that took 6months.what you said was a relief to me as the latter was with a complex pattern

Thank you so much for creating this video! I already do most of these things naturally, somehow, and I always thought I was a "weird crocheter," lol. But I also learned something new and valuable (about posture😬) - this is great! PS - also, I'm the queen of "oops - I missed a stitch? oh, well -- moving on.." 😂 But I usually block my work, anyway, so one stitch isn't worth frogging fifty-eleven rows to me.

@@craftglad Making pot holders or dishcloths are always a good thing to start with and a lot of women would go nuts on this I know they would cause when I show my dish clothes I made everyone just loves them and I listen to the crochet crowd a lot
I love finding ways of fixing mistakes later. Sometimes it is as easy as joining two stitches together by darning.
also if you combine the idea of a hook under and yarn over it's even faster too

If I may add one that may be helpful, too (at least it was for me): Yes, that pattern you just found is really pretty, but if speed is important for you, consider if your general talents and ability are in tune with it. If you're bad at counting, like me, and you want to "flow" through your projects fast and relax while crocheting, don't choose a pattern that requires you work 20 dc into every 4th chain loop, and chain 17 into every other in between. Even worse if you're a slow stitch pattern learner. Stick to easier two or three row repeats with more intuitive, visual stitch patterns.
My grandma could watch tv, really listen to what was said, laugh at jokes, while crocheting blind, counting the stitches like a clockwork in her head. I absolutely can't. And that's totally okay.
@elle-izalogan9372 Great tip! I find counting to be easy, and the visual stuff is sometimes harder for me to do without looking at the pattern. I can crochet the way your grandmother could, but I can't do that when I knit. Thank you for the comment. 😀
This may sound silly but I found children beginner crochet books so much better as a beginner than adult beginner books. Adult beginner books really made me overwhelmed n killed my confidence pretty bad considering I'm an adult n most are so overwhelming like I should have known how to crochet straight out of the womb. Then I found some beginner kits for kids. My first I learned how to make slippers from a rectangle of only single crochet n from that I designed my own beginner fingerless gloves from that. Like I said I probably sound silly but I was proud of myself to have a project I got to finish n I can move onto others now a lil at a time.

I would add that learning to minimize your movements is also essential. If you are noticing that your movements are making your shoulders or upper arms move, these large movements will slow you down (and often cause you pain in the long run). Watch her crochet at 10:30, most of the movement is in the hands and wrist. Your hook only needs to make small movements to make the stitch, so figure out how to do those movements without having to move your whole arm. It's like learning how to write. Preschoolers will often use their whole arm when writing, but eventually you are only using the smallest finger movements to get the same result.

QUESTION.... Where did you get the clear container with a purple lid that you pulled your yarn from? I would love something like that. It's on tip #6. Thank you for this video
I got them at Joann. Only thing I don't like is that there is only one small hole in the top of the lid for the yarn to feed through, so if you want to swap it out for a different project, you have to cut the yarn. To solve that issue, I cut out a small section of the ring part on the lid that goes around the clear plastic container. That allows the yarn to feed out of the hole I cut, and then I can just flip the top open to swap out the project. I hope this helps! 🙂Thank you for watching.
How do you keep the hook from catching on the last thread of loose yarn? I find that I have to keep the tension on loose yarn especially tight in order not to catch on the last thread on the yarn. But it happens a lot.
One thing to think about when you’re starting is starting out with good posture to avoid future issues.

This is very true! I tend to slide down in my chair when I get comfortable, and it can kill my neck.
I started out with plastic from hobby Lobby to learn because they are slower. I now use the metal hooks because they glide through faster. I hate bamboo they all bent and broke
I definitely prefer metal hooks! I only run into trouble with those if I'm using slippery yarn, but I don't do that often. I use plastic instead when I do, but never bamboo. But everyone's different.
