THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED!!! Omg I have struggling finishing projects in weeks when it really should only take me days, and I would never guess that the way I hold my needle and yarn could make a difference. Thank you so much for this, you’ve saved me from my crocheting woes!

I started with the knife grip. After two years crocheting, my fingers holding the hook discovered how to do the action the wrist was doing. So now I want to see if I can go even faster with the pencil grip. Even if not, it's better to have multiple options to avoid fatigue. Initially it does not feel natural to hold it like a pen. I feel like I'm almost starting over. This video is just what I need.
Update: After three days, both grips feel natural. I switch back and forth, but I'm still faster and more consistent with knife grip. At this point knife grip has fatigued some of my joints to the point that I have to have an alternative or else take several days off to recover. Using the pen grip allows me to keep going.

I can "blame" my dad for the way I hold my yarn and hook since he's the one who taught me how to crochet over 50 years ago. His mom taught him along with all his siblings, and then most of my cousins. Grandma had taught many of us to knit as well, so we all knew when visiting her there would be plenty of yarn, hooks, and needles to keep our hands busy while we sat and talked.

this is great! I've originally been using the knife grip but recently my ring finger has been starting to hurt but this hold lets me relax my ring finger so my hand doesn't hurt anymore, I've also only been crocheting for about a month or two and have only been working on small projects and have recently finally started to crochet a scarf and have been looking for a way to crochet faster and this really helps.
I now learnt to switch between the two grips depending on my mood and hand condition (of course I make sure to take rests lol). thanks for the video!

You are the only crocheter I've ever seen hold their hook the way I do, and it doesn't slow you down at all. I was told it looked like I am doing it backward by my Aunt Ruth over 56 years ago. Needless to say, I put the hook down. In my old age, sickness tethers me to the house, and crochet is back in my life. I am a new sub. I hope you have lots and lots of videos to watch. Wow. What an absolute pleasure that was to watch. You are just a gorgeous teacher/presenter/explainer/person. Ive Just this min watched u, my first ever video/tutorial on crocheting. I bin crocheting since I taught myself at about 8 years old. My Mom always knitted. I tried and tried 2 knit but didn't take 2 it - I think it was 2 slow to grow for me as a child. So I took a kiddies crochet stitch book and just did what it said in the book. I held the yarn and the hook it what ever way felt comfy and I have done this- growing my knowledge of stitches - for, all my life ( on and off) about fifty something years. Watching you crochet was a real delight. U were not only knowledgeable but so easy and amusing to listen to. The bit at the end was hysterical. Since my junior school days I dont recall crocheting with or watching any body else crochet and its amazing how much I loved it. You have rekindled my fire and for that I send the biggest, heartfelt THANKS.

Thanks for such a wonderful tutorial Chandi! I broke down what you did in the video and reconstructed my technique to be much faster. I discovered in my sc that I was doing the first yarn over in the opposite direction to the 2nd one - changing this to be 2 in the same direction has really helped speed it up, also making my tension looser so that the yarn slides easily and not holding on to the work with my hook hand. The little tilt of the hook at the end of each stitch is important to quickly get the off the hook and how you ‘flick’ the handle away from you during this movement. Have a wonderful day ❤

Great tips for pencil holders. I’m a knife holder and have been for years. When I try and do it your way I just can’t! It’s so funny to watch me struggle. Have a lovely weekend. It’s snowing here today in Massachusetts! Hopefully it will stop soon! 💗💗

Thanks! With New England you never can tell. One Easter in April it was 90 degrees out! One May we had a terrible ice storm and we’re without power for a week! That’s New England weather forecast you!🌨💞

Taught myself crochet to make amigurumis, finishing one in a day was no problem, after moving onto clothing or blankets I feel defeated from the amount of time it takes. Saw people on Instagram crocheting like this and was wondering why they hold the hook so differently, I'll be giving these tips a try, thank you

I can hold hook both ways, but since I now have rheumatoid arthritis, I find knife grip is easier. Hold yarn like you, I feel it gives the best tension too. I also knit..right hand throw, can't get my head wrapped around continental. I did watch Portuguese knitting, and that intrigues me.

I have mild carpel tunnel, tendentious, and major tennis elbow. Portuguese knitting has been a nerve saver. I found it easy to do but I do both throw and pick (i learned to for color work). I really encourage you to try, so much easier on the joints. Good luck!!

So off topic, but I love how your nail polish usually matches the yarn you're using!🤭

This is a super helpful and informative video! I was able to try it out and it does feel nice and fluid ; a bit awkward at first but it does eventually start to flow. I'm a bit bummed out that I can't use the pencil grip more! Unfortunately due to the type and location of my chronic wrist pain the pencil grip is pretty painful. This vid was still super helpful!

NGL, been doing these for decades unconsciously. I usually do the pen grip for smaller hook sizes and the knife grip for larger hook sizes. And yep, this really speeds up your crocheting. I still struggle with the very first row up to this day. The same issue with knitting, but I'm okay with it.

    Should this work for amigurumi
I hold my hook like a knife and loop over all the time
I even twist my yarn over my non dominant index finger 🙈

very cool technique! i only started crochet in january 21 so im a newbie but already hardly addicted. i did 3 xxxl scarfs that are 3,30m each, about 15 amigurumis and im halfway done with a huge blue toned patchwork blanket so far-i do it on a daily basis since i started, its such a nice hobby and i always searched fot slmething like this that actually gives me joy and helps calming my thoughts down. i will definately try the technique you show here, but i first need different hooks cause mine have an ergonomic handle and that dont feel comfortable that way

I ham fist my hook and twist it with the flat piece but most of my work is done with my tension hand and working yarn. And I’m farely fast. Trying this way I can’t even get my hook around the yarn lol 😂 like literally have to climb a mountain to get my hook anywhere near the working yarn. I think I’m gonna have to practice, although I have very short fingers so it might not work for me. Thank you for the detailed explanation and happy hooking my fellow speed freaks.

Did a little swatch trying the pencil hold and I must be doing something wrong because it’s hurting down my thumb 😂 I like the way it feels tho. I think it’s because I can’t catch the yarn easily on the second yarn over so I end up twisting my thumb and hand all weird. I’m gonna keep practicing tho. Thanks for the tutorial!!
