I started crocheting twenty minutes ago watching another youtube video, and was close to quitting already because I can't control the tension. Luckily I though to look for alternative ways to hold the yarn. Thank you!! I think either the minimalist or your choice will work best for me, even though I'm still having issues with the tension.
Wow! I’m glad this was helpful. I also have a video that explains how to crochet with consistent tension, which might be helpful for you. It also just takes practice to get used to crocheting but it sounds like you will pick it up quickly! Crocheting can feel awkward at first but keep going and I promise it will “click” for you ❤️ let me know if I can help in any way or if there is a specific video you’d like to see! Happy crocheting! 🧶🧶🧶
I've been learning for about a week now and still have trouble. I'm still experimenting but I think tension is a big learning curve - just like the grip.... I kept switching back and forth between knife and pencil grip. I decided that for me, the pencil grip requires more actual wrist-bending (as opposed to rotation) so I'm pretty consistently using the knife hold now. Like you, I kept getting so frustrated. I just kept chaining and stitching - assuming that eventually it will start clicking. In the meantime, my colorful vocabulary is getting a workout 😜.
I'm new as well and I'm having trouble with 3 things. Holding the wool, tension and I keep splitting the wool with my hook. What are the best hooks sizes and yarn types to do simple Granny Squares?
Some hooks are more likely to split the yarn (they have a sharper point) so you may want to try different hooks. I would recommend using acrylic yarn to start. It shouldn’t split as easily and it’s cheap compared to natural fibers. For granny squares, I would use a medium, worsted weight yarn (4) and a 5mm hook. Hopefully this helps!
I've just started crotcheting and didn't figure out the best way for me to hold it until now, always had trouble getting the yarn to come out smoothly. Thanks a lot!
i learned how to crochet 3 years ago but i taught myself a very inefficient way to do it. it takes me almost double the time it takes a normal person to finish any project. ive been trying to fix it for the last couple of weeks and i finally found a way to crochet that works for me! thank you for the video and hopefully i can crochet faster soon
ive been crocheting for a couple months and had so many problems with tensioning - and then you posted two methods that are perfect tension for me. thank you so much!
I taught myself to crochet as a teen and in the 70's I had only library books to guide me.Now after 40+ years of crocheting I was just curious to try different ways to hold the yarn, since I have developed over the a totally different way that seemed to come naturally for me in a personal way .I find it helps with my annoyance with the "tension" issue, and it may be useful to someone reading this...my "method " is to thread the yarn over the ring finger, then under the pointer finger, then around and over the thumb, followed by going back under the pointer finger then over it to crochet.I sometimes wind a too long length of forward yarn around the pointer finger a few times to tighten for the hook area that you work at.The reason I like it so much is that I can extend my thumb to pull forth more yarn as needed. Its unusual I know, but it works for me! I have an issue with the lack of being able to control the slackness in yarn and this "way" the thumb pulls the yarn like a tension on a sewing machine and as I tend to crochet too tightly it helps with uniformity for my own projects .I also hold my hook underneath as you would a pencil. But your video is great for trying out ways that may be easier for beginners to do and you did great! I was curious to see if anybody else does it the way I do,but you just meet to get comfortable with whatever works for the individual crocheter personally..I'm a new sub!
Thanks so much! I've been crocheting for 5 years, and I'm a teenager, but my hands get cramps in them a lot because of how I use my fingers, and I really didn't want to end up with artheritis before I'm 20. These are way more comfortable for my hands and will definitely make my continuous journey easier❤
I learned to crochet when I was 3 from my great grandmother, MeMe, who used to babysit me a lot. I was pretty good at it and kept it up until I was 10 or so, then got distracted with other crafts and never picked it up again. Now I’m reteaching myself at 42! I was struggling with just holding and basic chains until I found this video. I like the first method, but yours works the best for me! Thank you for sharing! 💜
I am 68 yrs. Old stopped crochet 1yr due to my finger getting stuck. I found a dr. Who released and fixed it! Filled with Joy to find you,I’m starting over using your ways to hold yarn in that hand. Full of excitement for projects , my granddaughter learned and is making summer tops at 18 🥰 can’t wait to do crochet together for the first time.! Thank you 🙏 MarionZ
This is so wonderful! I crochet with my grandma all the time and it’s a really nice way to bond 🥰 I’m so glad your finger is better and you’re back to crocheting!!!
I know what you mean! I'm 62,,and have a middle finger that is affected on my right hand, called a " trigger" finger.Tge tendon doesn't work right and sometimes I have to get it "unstuck," by opening it manually. It is a simple procedure a doctor does to release the tendon with a small incision in the palm at the base of that finger.I just haven't done it yet But I'm glad it doesn't interfere with my crocheting!
Method 3 has been a game changer for me! I naturally crochet tightly and wasn't aware of other ways to hold my yarn, but this method has opened up new possibilities. Method 4 also offers some great techniques, so I find myself alternating between the two to keep my stitches even. ❣️
I liked your way best. It gave the greatest control and best tension. I have been crocheting for many, many years and have never been happy with my tension and this made a huge difference. Thank you!
I’ve been crocheting over 20 years and I always used your 3rd method but I would hold the tail with my other fingers and they would cramp for a while. I’ve been trying to figure out a new way to hold comfortably and opt 2 is really comfortable so far. Thanks!
Cool video. I was taught how to crochet from someone who learned how to crochet from a book back in the 1980's. Over the years I changed many things about how I crochet, but I still rap my yarn around my index finger. It give me the best tension and control when I crochet.
I hold my yarn with the same hand I hold my hook and have terribly tight tension. The third method works like a charm and feels way more natural and comfortable than the weird way I was doing it 😂 thank you!
Wow, thank you so much! I'm going to practice all four of these to see which one feels the most natural to me while at the same time giving me more control over the tension. This video really helps!
Glad that I found this video....the 3rd method was the one that suited and felt comfortable for me. 4th method is the second method that I felt comfortable in , will follow these two from now on...
This is super helpful. I've not seen the wrap around the index finger anywhere and that is what I've been trying to do. I'm glad to have more options! Thank you!
Thank you for this video, what a blessing ❤ my daughter and I are trying to crochet for the fur time, your video was super helpful. Thank you 🙏 gracias ❤
Thank you for this video! I have been crocheting on and off for a while, but always struggled with getting tired in my left hand fingers. I think I prefer your method for now, as it seems I don’t have to hold on to the yarn as hard as I used to 😊
THANK YOU! I'm learning to crochet and hated the yarn being wrapped around my pinky but that seems to be what everyone teaches. I love the last one that you showed!! It feels so much more natural to me and I'm excited to keep practice :)
I have been trying to crotchet my foundation chain, and the tension has been all over the place, other videos were like, here make this tensioner, I was like hold up, I can't even get the chain right and you want me to make what? Thank you thank you thank you, I am now working on my foundation basics all because of you!!!
Most informative, easy to follow, and demonstrations are great. Similar videos were confusing and made me want to give up. I will be checking out the other videos.
Thank you for such a wonderful visual tutorial on how to hold yarn. It may sound silly, but placing my hand on the table like you did helped 100% vs trying to wrap the yarn with my hand in the air. For me, I am just not as coordinated (yet lol) with my nondominant left hand. My grandmother did a lot of crochet and tatting. I remember she always had a squeeze ball or the hand exerciser grippers in her left hand when she'd take a break. It makes sense to build up strength😊 Thanks again!! ❤
thank you SO much! i should have looked this up sooner! i’ve been crocheting for about a month and a half and the way i was holding my yarn was super inefficient. so thank you for this! your favorite is now my favorite way to hold it!!
TYSMMM!! I’ve watched so many tutorials and they all went too fast but this actually helped!! I’m still struggling to keep the tension but generally I found a method that’s good for me
Thank you so much for your tutorial l was having alot of pain in my ring and middle finger's so this was so helpful without me having to get a shot in my fingers.
Thanks for this I'm relearning crochet-ing with my 98 year old mom I'm looking forward to giving us both something to fill her days. She has dementia so 🤞that this is an activity we can manage.
That is a wonderful thing to do together! I hope you both enjoy and can have fun crocheting and spending time with one another. Thanks so much for watching❤️
Thank you! I crochet right handed, but I am learning to crochet left handed. And what I normally do wasn’t working! Your video gave me some options that might work for getting the right tension
Thanks for this ,I've just started learning to crochet and I was struggling to hold the yarn right as it was always too tight but this video really helped :)
I use a variant of the OIFUTR method you show in the video. I also use my other fingers to adjust the tension along with changes in how I cinch up a loop with the hook and my right hand and fingers. Nice video.
Thank you very much for this video. I’ve developed arthritis in my left pinky and of course that’s the one I wrap the yarn around 🥴. I’m going to try your last one, first off to see how I go 🌸🇦🇺
Yes!!!! I needed this!!! I'm still trying to figure out how to hold my yarn and be able to throw something together in a day and to where its comfortable so I can pick up my speed over time. I'm getting the hang of things but still need that little bit of help. Thank you so much! Yes I subscribed and liked video too :)
this was so helpful i've been crocheting for over a year and i've always felt tension in my hand im going to try out B for awhile hopefully that way my hand doesn't hurt:)
This helped me find one I think I used to do which isn't listed lol Over pinky under next 2 and over point. Very slight tension I'm a tight crocheted but as I'm getting older I'm working on fixing that thanks so much!
Thank you for this video. I taught myself to crochet by U tube videos, but 5hey never show you options on how to hold the yarn. I’m going to try several of your methods. I was using just the index finger but my tension was all over the place.
Having not crocheted in over 40 years, I couldn't remember how I used to hold the yarn! After trying quite a few tecnniques, I found your video and I now like the one you prefer to use. Thanks so much!
I have a friend that wants to learn how to crochet but her parents don’t want to buy her the materials to crochet so I’m trying to tech her at school during recess and sometimes even class but the issue it well I mean it is always hard to learn something new especially crochet or knitting but I’m left handed and she’s right handed so hopefully the first method helps her!🤞🤞🤞
Thanks for the tips! Option 3 is my favorite right now, maybe because the project I’m doing uses a very fuzzy yarn that tends to lead to too much tension.
Thanks for this! I am a beginner. I don't know if it's because I'm using cheap Walmart yarn, or because I have a plastic hook (or both), but I seem to be crocheting super tight. The simple finger is definitely helping with that, but man...the hand cramps!
Im having trouble with the tension and holding the yarn because the yarn slides down my pointy finger when I try to crochet, do you have any tips on how to fix this? Thank you for this video because it explains very clearly how to hold your yarn in different ways, Im just having trouble actually doing it. Have a nice day!
I’ve been crocheting for three years, and I’ve always held my yard in a weird way, but it cramps up my hand after a short period of time, so I’m trying to re-teach myself and an issue I keep running into with the tension, is that the yarn keeps sticking to my hand, so when i need to pull more yarn, it won’t go, it’s like it’s stuck to my fingers and it’s so hard, i can’t figure this out !!
I can't hold it any of those ways 😶. I've tried, but the only way I can crochet is by holding my work between my middle and ring fingers, and feeding the thread through in-between my index finger and thumb. I cannot keep my index finger extended while holding the thread on top.. It may be because I cut hair years ago (still do occasionally) and control the hair cutting scissors, or just because I like for all my fingers to work, except for my lazy pinky.😁
I am having trouble with either it's too tight or its too loose and I just started 2 days ago. My mother and sister could crochet but I couldn't learn from them. I am taking a class at the library where I work. It has its advantages! It was suggested by my crochet teacher to find and check out how to hold the yarn comfortably. My fingers cramp up because I am holding to tightly and if I loosen my fingers, I loose what rhythm I had. The other problem I have is I somehow hook half the yarn loop and make loosened holes in the yarn making it frayed. Any help or advice you can give would be appreciated.
Well, first of all, it’s amazing that you only started 2 days ago! A lot of this is just going to take some practice, but it sounds like you are off to a good start considering the fact that you can pinpoint exactly what you are having trouble with! What might help is first of all, get some acrylic yarn. I’m not sure what you’re using now, but I feel like acrylic yarn is harder to split than some other types. The type of hook might help, too. Some have a more rounded head that will be less likely to poke through the yarn and split it. Also, acrylic yarn is cheap, so if you mess up no worries! I would try out a few different ways of holding the yarn and then just figure out what feels most natural to you. Then I would suggest you just pick one type of easy stitch to do (probably dc or hdc) and then, using your cheap yarn, make a big rectangle that has no purpose other than being something you use for practice. Practice making your rectangle while listening to a podcast or watching a tv show in the background. This will help you not think so much about what you are doing and I think you’ll naturally find a flow where you’re not gripping the yarn so tightly and your tension will become more consistent. Don’t put pressure on yourself 😊 it’s a new skill and it’s supposed to be fun andenjoyable! You got this! ❤️❤️
I’ve been trying to improve my technique lately because I’m self taught and I naturally fell into having the yarn on my right side and wrapping it around the hook with my right hand while holding my work in my left. Is this a known technique or is it just me making things up? I will be trying out these methods as well. Thanks!
I have seen someone crochet really quickly with this technique! It is a common way to work with yarn while knitting but not very common for crocheters. If it works for you, I say go for it!
Interestingly enough, the way I hold my yarn and hook wasn't shown. Between my pinky and ring finger, over my pointer, nothing looped around. I use my pointer and thumb to hold my work and hold my hook like a pencil. I began crocheting in the 70s.
If you hold item with first finger and thumb the yarn round little finger under ring finger and over middle finger the tension of yarn is perfect. Hold the hook like a pen much better and no rsi of fingers. Paton method is much easier on wrists.
Hi Jamie, it might be that your tension is too tight or maybe you just need to practice the motion more. Can you explain a little bit more what’s going on and maybe I can answer your question better ☺️
I didn’t really have tension issues because the first project I started was a blanket and I wasn’t doing crazy patterns. But I knew once I got into different things I would need it so why not address it now before it becomes an issue
Hi. I am new to your channel I was wondering if you know how to make the 3D daisy for cardigan or sweaters !!! Thank you…… BTW, I am pretty new to crocheting…..☺️☺️☺️
Hello Narges! First of all, thanks so much for watching. Secondly, I’ve looked up the 3D daisy and it looks like there are many variations! I don’t have a tutorial for the 3D daisy, but I’m sure you can find one for a design that you like on Pinterest or here on UA-cam. Let me know if you have any questions! Happy crocheting 🧶
I don't have an issue with tension... I watched your video hoping I'd find a way to have my left forefinger less involved. It is getting so sore! I can't figure out why.
Make sure you can easily pull it out of your ball or skein or have a section already pulled out so there is no tension. And, if you need to, separate your fingers a little bit so it can glide through them
I find it difficult to crochet holding yarn in my left hand , I was an ardent knitter so I tend to use my right hand and kind of knit the yarn If that makes sense? Mmy tension is quite loose though I keep having a go with my left hand but I always go back to my right so frustrating!! So weird as I am actually left handed lol
I have seen people crochet quickly and successfully using this method! I wanted to do a full video on it but I have a hard time crocheting this way. Do what works for you! And keep practicing to get that tension correct :) I wish I could be more helpful, but just know that it’s possible!
My left hand that is holding the yarn is hurting even though i already stop crocheting in months and when i started again i can still feel it. Any tips on how to avoid it?
I feel for you because I have the same problem! I would just suggest trying out different methods and make sure you are taking care of yourself. Maybe you can set up an elevated yarn holder or something so you don’t have to use your left hand as much… not sure what this would look like but something to think about
Hi Karen, have you heard of crochet rings or yarn tension rings? It’s a ring that you can wear on your left hand and wrap the yarn around it to keep tension. Maybe that would help?
@@crochetunraveled omg I know where I can get one. Yes I've seen them. Ty soon very much. I hope u have a great day. Ty again . Ps I'm in Nova Scotia. Wow I'm excited to get one and try one
So what if your like me and are ablento crochet SC well with proper tension, HOWEVER, I simehow hold the yarn and hook both in right hand, and use my pointer finger on left hand to hook yarn over... Im not slow with it either.. ... Asking becauae i canr figure out how to do new stirches from youtubw videos because of it... Trying to releaen, but its really upsetting!!
I’ve seen people crochet that way so it’s possible! It might help to just listen to the tutorials rather than watch them so it’s not as confusing. Then you can know to “yarn over” when you need to but do it in your own way. Hopefully that helps!
Ive been crocheting for 7 years now and ive never felt comfortable with these finger placements I just hold my yarn between my index and my thumb while holding my work with my ring finger too.

Yay I’m so happy to hear that! Thanks for watching ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! I am new to crochet & wrap around middle finger, but not sold on that way. I will try all methods you suggested.
Thank you! My index finger was cramping up and I switched to the pinky wrap method and I’m ok now!
Thanks for this ,I've just started learning to crochet and I was struggling to hold the yarn right as it was always too tight but this video really helped :)
Yay! I’m so glad this helped. Thanks for watching 😊 happy crocheting!
I use a variant of the OIFUTR method you show in the video. I also use my other fingers to adjust the tension along with changes in how I cinch up a loop with the hook and my right hand and fingers. Nice video.
Omg thank you so much. Honestly, I was about to give up 😭
I’m glad you didn’t! Happy crocheting 🧶
Thank you very much for this video. I’ve developed arthritis in my left pinky and of course that’s the one I wrap the yarn around 🥴. I’m going to try your last one, first off to see how I go 🌸🇦🇺
Good luck!!! I hope it helps ❤️❤️❤️
Perfect! Just what I needed for starting my crochet journey! I like the last one the best.
Yay! Thanks for watching ❤️❤️❤️
Yes!!!! I needed this!!! I'm still trying to figure out how to hold my yarn and be able to throw something together in a day and to where its comfortable so I can pick up my speed over time. I'm getting the hang of things but still need that little bit of help. Thank you so much! Yes I subscribed and liked video too :)
Thanks so much Bethany!!! I’m glad it helped 😊
This was super easy and made it a ton easier!! Thank you!!
I’m so glad it helped and thank you for watching!!
Thanks for your video! So far i was wrapping the yarn over my pinkie, but it is a bit too tight sometimes. Now I have a lot of new options to try!
Yay! Hopefully one of the options will be perfect ☺️ happy crocheting!
this was so helpful i've been crocheting for over a year and i've always felt tension in my hand im going to try out B for awhile hopefully that way my hand doesn't hurt:)
I hope it helps!! You’ll have to report back and let me know 😊
@@crochetunraveled Yes ofc😇
Thank you for showing the options!
Hope it was helpful! ❤️🧶
This is a great tutorial!!! I'm going to share it with my crochet group! Well done!!
Thank you!!! I’m so glad you enjoyed and happy crocheting 🧶🥰
I have always used the pointer finger its easy but I've got some injury. Thanks for this video its helpful
I’m so glad it was helpful - thanks for watching!
This helped me find one I think I used to do which isn't listed lol
Over pinky under next 2 and over point. Very slight tension I'm a tight crocheted but as I'm getting older I'm working on fixing that thanks so much!
That is great!!! Happy crocheting 🧶❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this video. I taught myself to crochet by U tube videos, but 5hey never show you options on how to hold the yarn. I’m going to try several of your methods. I was using just the index finger but my tension was all over the place.
I’m so glad it helped! Hopefully you find an option that works for you
Having not crocheted in over 40 years, I couldn't remember how I used to hold the yarn! After trying quite a few tecnniques, I found your video and I now like the one you prefer to use. Thanks so much!
That’s great news Penny! Thank you so much for watching ☺️
I kinda like your style!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!❤❤❤🎉
I have a friend that wants to learn how to crochet but her parents don’t want to buy her the materials to crochet so I’m trying to tech her at school during recess and sometimes even class but the issue it well I mean it is always hard to learn something new especially crochet or knitting but I’m left handed and she’s right handed so hopefully the first method helps her!🤞🤞🤞
That is very sweet of you! I hope it helps and thanks for watching 🥰
Thanks for the tips! Option 3 is my favorite right now, maybe because the project I’m doing uses a very fuzzy yarn that tends to lead to too much tension.
Thanks for this! I had only seen the first method, and personally not a fan. Can't wait to try out the other methods to see what works best for me!
Yay! Thanks so much for watching and I hope one of these methods does the trick for you 🥰
Thanks for this! I am a beginner. I don't know if it's because I'm using cheap Walmart yarn, or because I have a plastic hook (or both), but I seem to be crocheting super tight. The simple finger is definitely helping with that, but man...the hand cramps!
Thanks for the help, I love the last one!!
Yay! So glad it helped, thanks for watching!! ❤️❤️❤️
WRAP AROUND POINTER FINGER WORKS FOR ME 🤗🤗
Thanks! This really helped me!
Yay! So glad it helped ☺️ thanks for watching ❤️❤️❤️
@@crochetunraveled wow fast response lol
😂😂😂
Thanks. I like your favorite method a lot
I’m so glad it works for you! Thanks for watching ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much it helps me a lot 🥰
I’m so glad! Thanks for watching 🧶❤️
Awesome tutorial. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Melody, thanks for watching!!! :) Let me know if there are any other tutorials you would like to see from me.
Hey this is my first time doing this
I prefer method #3 for holding my yarn because it is easy for me.
If that’s what works for you, then more power to you! 😄🧶
@@crochetunraveled awesome! Thanks. This actually makes total sense since I started with knitting. Glad to know it’s not totally weird.
Interestingly enough, the way I hold my yarn and hook wasn't shown.
Between my pinky and ring finger, over my pointer, nothing looped around. I use my pointer and thumb to hold my work and hold my hook like a pencil.
I began crocheting in the 70s.
I’ll keep this in mind! Maybe your technique would help someone else 😊
If you hold item with first finger and thumb the yarn round little finger under ring finger and over middle finger the tension of yarn is perfect. Hold the hook like a pen much better and no rsi of fingers. Paton method is much easier on wrists.
thank YOU
3:50 I’m so glad how I hold my yarn/hook is acceptable I was worried I’d have to change or have arthritis at 25 lol
I’ve seen so many different ways to hold it, it’s whatever works for you!
This is really helpful! I have to ask though, I have trouble with pulling through my yarn - whats the best way tonhave more control over this?
Hi Jamie, it might be that your tension is too tight or maybe you just need to practice the motion more. Can you explain a little bit more what’s going on and maybe I can answer your question better ☺️
Please do a video on Michaels product: loops and thread knitten tension tool.
Very nice!Thanks
Thank you Soo much
You’re so welcome! Thanks for watching & happy crocheting 🧶❤️
I have been crocheting for many years and I could never find and I still can't find a comfortable way to hold my yarn so I do need help in this
I'm new to You Tube. Do you have a video on how to do a back post treble stitch?
Hi KC I don’t have that video up although it is on my list to make! Hopefully you can find another good tutorial in the meantime ☺️
Thank you 🌼
I hold mine using 3 but it hurts the tendon under that index knuckle from holding the index up. Any tips to avoid that?
I don't have an issue with tension... I watched your video hoping I'd find a way to have my left forefinger less involved. It is getting so sore! I can't figure out why.
Thank you 😊
How do you guys hold make your yarn smooth bcs mine kept making it hard to pull
I would like to know how to crochet collar for tops
I’m sure you can find some great tutorials on other UA-cam channels for that :)
I think I change how I hold depending on the yarn and the stitch
If it works for you, then I say go for it ☺️ thanks for watching ❤️❤️❤️
My left hand that is holding the yarn is hurting even though i already stop crocheting in months and when i started again i can still feel it. Any tips on how to avoid it?
I feel for you because I have the same problem! I would just suggest trying out different methods and make sure you are taking care of yourself. Maybe you can set up an elevated yarn holder or something so you don’t have to use your left hand as much… not sure what this would look like but something to think about
i wish you could help. im a stroke survivor limited use in left hand. i cant seem to get the yarn around fingers on left hand. any ideas pls?
Hi Karen, have you heard of crochet rings or yarn tension rings? It’s a ring that you can wear on your left hand and wrap the yarn around it to keep tension. Maybe that would help?
@@crochetunraveled omg I know where I can get one. Yes I've seen them. Ty soon very much. I hope u have a great day. Ty again . Ps I'm in Nova Scotia. Wow I'm excited to get one and try one
I’m so glad! You’ll have to let me know how it works! Thanks so much for watching and best of luck 🥰
Cool
I’m struggling to chain whatsoever my yarn won’t go through the hook can you do a video with detail on chaining

My yarn keeps getting stuck and not moving, any tips for that?
Not moving through your fingers or getting stuck within your project?
Ive been crocheting for 7 years now and ive never felt comfortable with these finger placements I just hold my yarn between my index and my thumb while holding my work with my ring finger too.
If that works for you then that’s great :) I love that there is no right or wrong way to do things as long as the result is something you like
