The thicker yarn trick is marvelous. I used it after I watched this video the first time. This is my second view. I will be saving this to my crochet playlist for future reference.

Oh, you are not alone! That's the way we are taught at schools in Finland so almost everyone holds it this way and many other northern Europeans too 😊

I often use that “cord” in place of a starting chain, depending on the pattern. It gives a nice foundation to work the first row into & keeps things neat. Nice video!
