@@justanotherweirdo11 Naturally the comparison to male circumcision comes up when the video states that cosmetic genital surgeries on children too young to consent is a human rights violation. It does seem sexist to attempt to shut down anyone bringing up the idea that, like the intersex children the video is talking about, male babies also routinely have their basic human rights violated.

As a medical student years ago - we knew there were up to 6 different DNA types of human sexual variations - and 2 genders. This has always been in medicine. It is sad when some physicians are not educated enough to realize that nothing should be done until after the child goes through puberty - and let the child determine their sexual destiny and indentity without any surgery. Surgery should be determined by the young adult, while this child is being medically followed until 18. This also lets the child feel they have total control over their destiny - and provides mental stability and happiness. Please keep talking and reaching other people with this human story - this is the greatest contribution you can give the world - your wisdom about your life !!

There have always been intersex people. Even though surgeries exist, it seems unethical to surgically alter babies to confirm to norms. These babies have their rights to bodily autonomy taken away from them.

My humble liberal opinion on this is.... let them decide what they want when they turn of age. period... nothing should be done, contrary to popular belief... the fact that doctors say "Surgery does not happen on children" yes... but it is not entirely true. Sometimes you get parents who are extremely confused and will demand that the doctor performs surgery on their newborn for fear of judgement from their religious communities, or idiot doctors who see a uterus and a penis on a child will do it themselves without informing parents. in Islam, we're suggested to wait at least until they shows sign of what they lean more to biologically, socially and physically, in Islam we believe in only two genders, male and female, so we had to watch intersex kid carefully as they grow so we can decide and know what their gender is, when they're a baby, we look at how they pee, if they pee from female urethra, their a female, if they pee from the penis, their a male, but usually we still wait until they've had their puberty, they just look at how they pee so they can put the baby gender in the birth certificate.
after they hit puberty, we look whether they had periods or they produce sperms, if they had periods and pee from female urethra, they're female, if they pee from penis and produce sperms, they're a male.
after looking at them biologically, now we have to look at how they socialise which usually around toodlers age, If they were into men and like men, they're a female, if they're into girls and like girls, they're a male.
physically, if they had periods, pee from female urethra and have more feminine looks like female face, grow breast and wider hips, they're a girl, if they produce sperms, pee from penis and have masculine looks like Adam apple, beard and mustache, they're a male.
usually these surgery were done when they already hit puberty, such as had periods or produce sperms, which usually around 9 years old to 18 years old, but most had the surgery at 14 until 16 years old.

Children can have gender dysphoria. It’s actually more common for pre pubescent kids to have it ( mainly boys ) . Its 100% wrong to allow people under 18 to have surgery. However it is okay for kids with diagnosed gender dysphoria to access hormones , therapy and puberty blockers. It’s not easy to get treatment. During the mandatory therapy sessions before a diagnosis of gender dysphoria is made , 80% + of kids will realise they’re not transgender. The other kids will have more therapy , doctors visits and they must have socially transitioned for a while ( changed name , clothes and pronouns ) the younger the child , the more intense the process will be. If a professional thinks the child is too young for puberty blockers and hormones ( usuallly 11 and under ) they won’t get any. If a professional thinks that the timing isn’t right , the child can’t understand or that the child might not be transgender, treatment will not proceed. It’s not hard to understand

I don't know about this.... Thinking of a teenager or young adult who is ready to start exploring with others sexually and then they have to deal with having genitals that look different than most others could be very difficult for them. Personally I'd rather it happen while I'm a small baby so I would have a better chance of not having to go through that embarrassment as a young adult. I get that not everyone will feel this way and I was not born intersex so not saying that I know exactly what they would feel like, I was born and still am a male but I do have a small story that I feel like could relate to what I'm trying to say. I was circumsized as a baby and the foreskin was only cut off about 95% of the way and the doctors told my parents that it would just fall away as it healed. Didn't happen. I'm almost 40 years old and to this day I have a couple small pieces of skin that wouldn't be there if that circumcision was done properly. As a teenager and a young adult when I was dating I found this to be extremely concerning because I had to explain it any time I was with a girl. Talk about some freaking awkward conversations sometimes, let me tell ya. Luckily it's not too noticeable and doesn't interfere with anything at all but it's there and I could have avoided all the worry and embarrassment about it had the docs done the right thing when I was a baby. So I am, in a small way relating my experience to someone who was born intersex and maybe the doctors are trying to help the kid avoid something like this later in life, something like what I went though. Again, I get that not everyone will see it this way but I encourage you to at least put yourself in the shoes of someone who would have to go through that as they grew up and became sexually active and just think about how that could affect their life if they were say a woman and had to explain to any man they were about to be with that they had a micro penis or something else that wasn't the norm or possibly what the other person was expecting. Also not saying that anything would be wrong with that and I hope anyone who does have to do that gets the respect they deserve, but I can, at least from my experience, say it can be very difficult. So I don't necessarily think that doctors should not be doing this, but it should ALWAYS be a decision involving the parents of the child. Never without concent. I do definitely agree with that part. I just can't say I think it's totally unnecessary surgery. If it's done with care, concent by parents and done carefully with minimal risk then I think it can be the right thing to do and a lot of people are probably thankful it was done if it happened to them. Thats my thoughts on it anyway. Take it for what you will.

You are missing a big, big, verry big point here. Genitals don't make your gender. Biological sex and gender are 2 different things. So I would rather live with the shame you are talking about as a teen, and choose if i want to have the surgery done to me when I get older. You are not helping your baby in any way if you perform this surgery. You can't choose your baby's sex or gender.

    • @bobbycone2
      @bobbycone2 4 роки тому +6

@@nicoledobra sorry, I don't agree. I think 2 responsible adults can make a decision for what's best for their baby based on the circumstances surrounding how thr baby was born. I think a lot of people think this is just parents picking one way or another for their child but I would certainly hope that it's done based on the facts at hand, does the child have other male or female traits, what will be the best choice. I agree, you can not choose gender or sex. Those decisions are made in the development of the fetus but if the development doesn't turn out as expected and it's all the way male or female as in these intersex births then I don't see any problem at all for the parents making the best choice to what's available for them at the time. Parents make choices for their offspring all through childhood. Are they always the right ones? No. But they do what they believe is best for their children and I think that's their right to do. If they choose not to perform the surgery and let the kid be as they were born then that's their right to do as well. I didn't miss any points, I just don't agree with you on this part. And that's okay, we don't have to agree. I'll respect your view on the subject however you feel but my life experiences, knowledge and beliefs have shaped my view on it and that's where I stand.

I don't think she did have any surgeries, at least nothing mentioned in the video. She said she was born with androgen insensitivity. That means she's XY like a male, but because as a developing fetus her body did not respond to testosterone in the usual way to take the appearance of a male, she was considered female, but likely does not have functioning ovaries. Nothing in the video gave any suggestion that she had had any surgeries, or that she would have chosen any.
That said, even if someone does wish to have certain surgeries done when they are an adult, does not make it ethical to do to an infant. It can wait. There is no medical reason to do them on an infant.Doing cosmetic surgery on an infant takes away the choice and the bodily autonomy of the adult that baby will become. That's why it's considered a human rights violation.

There's laws in several places that have (or are being considered) that makes it mandatory for people to get their parents permission just to socially transition (haircut, name, pronouns). Even though some parent's aren't supportive or one is and the other isn't. Some parents are supportive.
Specifically in the UK where I'm from they're trying to stop social transition for minors in schools and viewing it as a medical thing. For the UK, it says you have to live as your gender (social transition) for two years until you get a GRC at some point but by banning it for younger people it'll make a paradox especially if they're leaving school at 18 when you can get a GRC.
Some parents force their trans child(ren) to go through conversion "therapy" which is basically torture with electric shocks and more to unsuccessfully "stop" them from being trans. Some parents cut or force them to grow out their hair and force them to stick to their assigned gender clothes and if they don't, they get hurt. That is pushing gender and gender roles, not trans people.
I saw a comment once where someone was assuming that we see a boy playing with a doll and immediately assume they're a trans girl or something (we don't) and asking "So you want the surgery?" Or something like that.
Their words make no sense. Transfems get bullied when they play dolls or wear skirts "because they're too girly for a 'boy'" and when they come out they're told, "No you can't be a girl even though I'm not involved in your gender!"
I've seen a TERF (trans exclusionary radical "feminist" - but they're not feminists) force her trans child (minor) off the internet and forcing them to wea transphobic merchandise - yet we're the ones forcing transness on people apparently? We aren't. I've seen pictures of them and they look so sad.
Cis people push the roles onto us. Even for cis people. We're expected to live up to act or wear whatever the birth certificate says. They get mad if we're not exactly like their predictions or themselves.
But there are some parents that raise their kids without the restrictions. I'll raise mine with the knowledge that toys are toys, clothes are clothes and you can wear whatever you want as long as it's appropriate to your age, you actually want to wear it and you're comfortable.
Many trans people repress it (myself included) due to reactions from family/friends/school etc.
Anyway, minors have puberty blockers if they're trans (also cis people too) which are fully reversible. These aren't HRT which is given to minors 16+ (typically).
Some places ban them until you're 18 but by then puberty is done (I think Texas was one of these places).
No kid gets gender reassignment at that young age except for intersex people.
Many people assume transition means you come out and instantly go to a doctor, get hormones or blockers and get surgery the same day.
Which isn't possible and very unrealistic as we have to spend years in therapy and have several letters and referalls before that.
Some people detransition as well and some of them want to ban it all, even for adults.
Even though detransitioners use surgeries such as a mastectomy (like if they're detrans man who grew a chest on estrogen and then realized that they weren't trans so they get it removed) and others. So if they ban it they won't be able to detransition.
Some of them lie that they got fast tracked. Even though the wait lists can be quite long.
One adult trans woman ended her life in the UK because she'd been on the waiting list for around 1000 days (or weeks - can't exactly remember). That's a long time.
Like, nobody is rushing into this. Surgery costs lots of money too. I think on the NHS it's free though. Not sure how accurate that is.
Also in the UK and certain places intersex isn't a legal option on ID or certificates. Same with non binary (which isn't intersex).
And as a non binary intersex person, I'll be legally my AGAB unless they get it updated.
I also had surgeries done on me as a baby and I don't know if these were reassignment surgeries to make me look more like a girl as I have scars from "hernia removal surgeries". I didn't give consent to these. I don't know if I went through puberty naturally either. It was a mini puberty (some development but it only grew a bit) and happened in stages. I didn't get armpit hair until I was 16 and I have hormone issues.
I'm now entering another mini puberty as I'm starting to develop again (which I don't want). If it turns out I was forcibly given surgeries like these I'll be furious.
But anyway, people say they care about mutilation but aren't banning intersex genital mutilation (and the rest of the surgeries they go through) and yet ban surgeries for under 18s for trans people.
If I remember correctly the only times mastectomy is done -18 is because the child has attempted to take their own life especially if they weren't allowed puberty blockers.
Vaginoplasties aren't done on any trans person until they're at least 16+.
Also anti-trans bills make exceptions for intersex surgeries even though they're just babies or children or young teens.
Trans people give consent but that's considered mutilation by some people but actual non consenual surgery isn't to certain people?
The last time the UK had a petition on non binary being a legal option, they ranted about trans women in sports or something and didn't pay attention to the fact it was about non binary people.
Trans people just want to have healthcare. Florida has banned it for adults. Many more places are doing the same. And yet the people making the laws aren't trans: they're cis people. Honestly we should be in charge of our own healthcare.
I had an idea about a Trans Healthcare Committee or Panel or something made up of trans people, doctors, some cis allies and maybe a supportive detrans person to discuss it and not people who don't know how being trans works.
I'd have more to say but this is basically it because my hand hurts from typing this. Hope this helps. I know a lot as I've done my own research on this.

If you don't mind me asking, why? Usually, the surgeries are just cosmetic, so they really don't have a medical benefit. Why not let them have the surgery at 18, when they know a bit more about themselves and what they feel like? the surgery can be scarring and is, in most cases, permanent. This is not something that can be simply wished away if you find out later in life that you "chose wrong" (I.e. the child grows up looking/feeling more like a boy than a girl)

    • @aaronlandry3934
      @aaronlandry3934 5 років тому +16

Danielle You don’t choose, the child’s gene choose. In the case of intersex, a DNA test is conducted to determine the child’s proper sex and the useless organ is removed.
If the child grows up to be transgender, then he or she will undergo normal transitioning to the opposite gender. If a sex change is the adult’s desire, a normal sex change operation is done.
Reason for the corrective surgery is usually tied to medical risks, so when corrected, the child grows up to be healthy.
If it is purely cosmetic, it is done so that the child is normal and like other children. Children will point out and make fun of another child that is different. More importantly is that it not cause problems for sexual partners later in life.
Why you would want your child to suffer from a fixable defect is beyond me. It makes about as much sense as refusing to vaccinate your child, but people will still do it.

According to published medical ethics, parents only have the right to give proxy consent for surgery if the surgery is medically necessary AND cannot safely be put off until the child is of age to consent. "Normalizing" surgeries for intersex children meet neither criteria, therefore they must be put off until the child becomes adult and decides what they want.
Remember, you aren't just altering the child, you are making a permanent, major, life-long body modification to the ADULT that child will be in just 18 short years. Many intersex persons are very happy with their bodies just the way they were born and say they would have been devastated if their parents had had them altered. Others, who were altered, grow up to feel terrible that their options were denied, because they feel they would have chosen a different surgery or none at all. Intersex is very complex and you can't make a decision solely based on the DNA at birth, because puberty can change everything you thought you knew. The only ethical thing is to not do cosmetic genital surgeries on children too young to give informed consent.

Certainly! Intersex variations can indeed lead to a wide range of differences in sexual development. Here are some key points:
    Genital Variations:
Intersex people do not necessarily have “both” male and female genitals. Instead, their anatomy can vary significantly.
Some intersex individuals may be born with mostly aligning anatomy but missing certain parts (e.g., a uterus or testes).
Others might have aligning internal anatomy but differences in secondary traits (like breast development or facial hair).
For instance, a person could have a large clitoris or micropenis because the same tissue in humans can develop into either a clitoris or penis.
The development of labia vs. scrotum and vaginal length also exists on a spectrum1.
    Sperm Production and Menstruation:
Intersex people can have diverse reproductive capabilities.
Some may have both testes and ovaries. If they also have a uterus, they might be able to get pregnant.
However, if testes are present, they may release more testosterone than optimal for conception and pregnancy.
If an intersex person is born with a functioning uterus, ovaries, and a vagina, they will likely start menstruating at puberty23.
Remember that everyone’s experience is unique, and intersex variations are complex. It’s essential to recognize and celebrate this diversity rather than relying on oversimplified ideas about sex and gender.
