18:51 To be clear, the people of Kitakami didn't take much, if any notice of Pecharunt (it was a timid creature and presumably stayed hidden as much as it could). And while they liked the Loyal Three, they didn't ask them to go after the ogre either. It was the couple in a distant land who had adopted Pecharunt and been infested by its poison that asked Pecharunt to get them the masks from Kitakami that tales had been spread of. Pecharunt didn't even know about Ogerpon at the time. It also never defeated Ogerpon. I'm rather confused on where you got that idea in your summary. Ogerpon killed the Loyal Three, put Pecharunt into basically a coma, and then went back to the mountain, injured and in mourning.
So many old tales are far darker than the modern interpretations. Many of the Disney movies are based on fairy tales that are originally incredibly dark
It's worth noting that the story of Momotaro was used *heavily* as propaganda throughout Japan's history. Specifically depicting Momotaro and his animal friends as representing Japan, and Oni Island representing China, Korea, and the USA at different points in history. In a way, the story of Momotaro is the story of Japan. So the fact Pokemon made the choice to show the story of Momotaro in this light actually speaks volumes. The way Pecharunt and the Loyal Three only came to Kitakami out of greed and killed Ogerpon's friend for no reason other than because they could, and how easily that translates to Japan's actual history, can be interpreted as a way of saying "maybe we were the bad guys". Which, considering Japan's tendency to pretend the uglier parts of their history didn't happen, *is a much bigger deal than people realize*
@@trevorpacelli8056They've been like that for a while. Why else do you think sword and shield's postgame was about a fraudulent monarchy? It's their way of saying that the system of monarchy that is very prevalent in some countries is outdated and clinging to it is doing more harm than good. That's why Sordward and Shielbert and Zacian and Zamazenta pass the royal title to you
Even if kieran wasn't actually possessed, I do like the detail of his hair's design as well as the hair band he had during DLC 2, signifying a metaphorical hold his own desire for strength had over him.
@@andrewharris1344I mean I do think Pecharunt and Kieran have a connection, too many coincidences to count. But that was all Kieran's own insecurity. The spirit or lingering aura of Pecharunt brought those feelings out of him somehow... But he redeems himself by helping stop it in Mochi Mayhem. That's why Carmine says she's seeing him for the first time in ages.
A couple story corrections: Ogerpon's human friend was not the creator of the masks. He was just some traveller from a different land that the village forbade from entering because they'd never seen anyone like him or Ogerpon. The mask maker was the one non-racist from the village that offered the pair beautiful masks as an apology for the village's treatment and as a tool for them to come visit under disguise. The old couple that adopted Pecharunt didn't know about Ogerpon, they only knew of the masks, which they asked Pecharunt to steal for them because it's mochi had corrupted their greed, and the masks themselves became widely known and coveted. Pecharunt and its entourage were initially successful in stealing the masks when the place was empty, but the human returned and attacked the intruders, so they fought and killed him, which was then what caused Ogerpon to fly into a rage and kill them in turn. Up until that point, the village just distrusted the man and Ogerpon just for being strangers that looked different. It was Ogerpon committing murder that they witnessed, misunderstood, and then started the scary ogre stories around.
@@AgnesBooth-zu7tw This wasn’t any regular Pokémon battle, this was a fight to the death, and Ogerpon likely had extremely boosted stats from being fueled by vengeance.
Also Pecharunt's ghost type isn't about mind control /that's what the poison typing in it is about/ but becasuse it's literally undead. Ogerpon killed it, then it got ressurected supposedely by Kieran.
I still enjoy that the utter butt-whooping Ogerpon gave to the Lousy Three and Pecharunt was SO LEGENDARY they blamed Natural Disasters after her. I love that my sweet little Cinnamon Roll has a confirmed Kill Count.
Yeah, she got so mad at them for stealing her masks and killing her master/friend, that she basically beat them to death, and she was at a type disadvantage too
@@T_the_Smeargle Well the loyal 3 Came back to life meaning they lost their first one and Pecharunt was comatose for hundreds of years. It was THAT BAD. Bless that cute little Ogre's heart.
Another cool thing about Ogerpon’s masks is that resemble different plants. Hearthflame is a maple leaf, Wellspring is heart shaped ivy, and Corberstone is tree bark. The Teal mask also looks like a collection of palm leaves.
And the masks design are kinda Hawaiian. I had a theory that her companion came from Alola and is native to Akala Island, that man might have based the mask's element on the four trials of his home island (Wellspring = Brooklet Hill, Hearthflame = Wela Volcano, Teal Mask = Lurantis' forest, Cornerstone = the Rock type Kahuna). Kieran's ancestor, who made the mask combined the Alolan aspect with their customary interpretation.
@@Bruhsaurus-Moment Nah the companion came from Paldea, that's how he had the Tera Crystals. It even says in international versions he got crystals from his home region, aka Paldea.
It is still crazy how much death there is in Scarlet and Violet. The stronger box legendaries killed the professors, the loyal three killed Ogerpon's friend, and Ogerpon killed the loyal three.
And thousand years before the events in the game, the Paldean King literally ordered dozens of delvers to reach the depths of Area Zero and they all f¢kin' died like adventurers of Made in Abyss.
@justadude450 Two times actually I have two more to finish area zero (soon four) In my third, I'm about to reach area zero. In my fourth account need to finish one last gym, the fourth titan and the fighting crew. Sorry I miss read your comment.
I kinda love that Oki Dogi also seems to take some inspiration from Tony the Tiger- Frosted Flakes mascot- Oki Dogi is on the bigger side then Tony, but it also has the neck accessory and instead of "Grrrrrrrreat!" he goes "Grrrrrrific!"
Does anyone else agree that Ogerpon is one of the cutest Pokemon ever? I can’t help but smile whenever I see her face, and when I first saw her running circles around my character, my heart practically melted!
I think it should be mentioned that in the Scarlet Pokedex it's implied that Okidogi was physically weak, Monkidori was mentally simple, and Fezandipiti was unattractive BEFORE the toxic chain was put on them and granted them their respective traits. It's almost like deals were made between them and Pecharunt. who granted them their physical strength/psychic power/unnatural beauty at the cost of their free will. An aside to that. I have a theory that they were different Pokémon species entirely before Pecharunt. Example, I think Fezandipiti was a male unfezant that maybe was born without that face mask that is common between the male population of that species. So he thought himself ugly and made a deal with Pecharunt as a result. I have no idea which Pokémon Okidogi and Monkidori were before. there are a lot of Dog and Monkey Pokémon so It could be any of them that fit the bill of a physically weak dog and simple minded monkey.
Surprised he didn’t mention this. It plays into the toxic relationship theme of pecharunt. It’s not just that pecharunt mind controlled them or something, he gave them what they wanted most, and in return they became his thralls.
Physical strength, intelligence (psychic power) and beauty which are also the 3 more common topic/ways to commit bulling on others, specially as a kid, which further emphasizes the toxic traits on the loyal three. It also fits into an important educational theory that the oppressed, when attaining a position of power, become themselves the oppressors if they don't receive liberating education (or something along those lines).
For Ogerpons name, I'll also mention that the "pon"-part of its name might come from "dekapon", which from what I understand, is a Japanese citrus-fruit or potentially just the Japanese name for Pomelo... and also, on the topic of Japanese summer-festivals, there's Obon, a more somber festival as basically a festival to mourn the dead, but I still can't get around how it somewhat matches Ogerpons name... O-ger-bon... and Ogerpon had a partner that, presumably, was killed by the loyal three and that it fondly remembers.
Ok, but imagine if they weren't dancing. imagine you walk into a town and there's just dozens of dead-eyed people just standing around staring at nothing and occasionally mumbling mochi mochi. that's actually nightmarish
Before u talk to the couple that got possessed outside they do just stand there mumbling mochi at each other until u talk to them they do the dance but I think funny enough the dance is their way of the finger pointing that the aliens did in invasion of the body snatchers but just a goofy way of doing it
When you mention the chains look like they don't belong, I like that the beautiful Fezandipiti is the only one with the the same colors as the chain in his design. Like it's an accessory matching his outfit
18:44 That's technically not what happened. According to the backstory video on the Pokémon channel, Pecharunt's caretakers heard about the brilliant masks worn by Ogerpon and her trainer and asked Pecharunt to bring them the masks, as eating the mochi brought out their greed and they were constantly asking Pecharunt for things. So Pecharunt and the Loyal Three weren't after Ogerpon herself, they just wanted the masks.
It was actually kibidango, not mochi that Momotaro used to enchant his followers. Which for any followers of One Piece, that is literally Tama's power that she uses to get the Gifters on the Straw Hats side. Hell that whole arc to the Wano saga could be seen as the Momotaro tale. Another alternative way to interpret the tale of Momotaro is of the conflict between Okoyama and Kagawa prefectures.
The "rice cakes" he mentioned Momotaro set out with are actually supposed to be the kibidango, not onigiri too. Onigiri are rice balls, not rice cakes. Of all the possible filings for onigiri, none of them are sweet but rather sour or salty.
Using Dionysus as an influence kind of makes sense, as Pecharunt’s battle theme is basically a party remix of the loyal three theme. He was the not-always-fun-loving party god dude did some scary shits.
Hey Lockstin, here’s an idea. Why do 2 of the 3 bat Pokémon lines (not counting Lunala) evolve with high friendship? Speaking of high friendship, are there lore reasons dictating what species require high friendship evolutions?
I can’t unsee the connections between the Loyal three, Pecharunt and Ogerpon, and a recent season of Super Sentai, Don Brothers. The red Ranger is Momotaro, so the leader of the team. The yellow Ranger is the Oni, and the only female on the team. The blue Ranger is the monkey, like Munkidori. The black Ranger is the dog. Okidogi has a lot of black in its design, and black rangers and green rangers are often interchangeable in Super Sentai. It’s also funny how Inu Brother and Okidogi have flipped body proportions. And the pink Ranger is the pheasant, who’s officially the first male pink Ranger, and pink is close enough to red. It’s also worth mentioning that the masks sold at the festival area of Kitakami resembles the helmets of Japanese superheroes like the aforementioned, and they happened to come out at the same time, though it’s most likely happenstance.

I'll be honest with you, Momotaro is described as lazy in many versions of the legend, but he is also strong, smart, kindhearted and brave individual, plus the physical description varies from fat lazy loser to tall, well built and handsome young man 🍑💪💪
To my understanding the classical version of Momotaro is more or less "an elderly couple finds a giant peach floating down the river which they eat and become rejuvenated to the prime of youth (around 30 years old) and conceive a child that takes 3 years to be born. Due to that he comes out able to walk and talk and at age 15 he decides to go take on the oni at their homeland. He does buy the loyalty of his animal companions via rice balls, but the attack on Onigashima is much more an unprompted assault for glory than anything else" Also my guy you are so close with Ogerpon, the name is a dual meaning: -pon as in "friendly" but also -pon as in DEKOpon, a type of japanese orange/citrus
Fezandipiti being a male Pokemon despite looking very feminine does coincidentally line in with Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, the first sentai to feature a male Pink Ranger whose ranger form is a Pheasant. Their yellow ranger takes the form of an oni and is the only female in the group, like Ogerpon. Not to mention all the masks available in Kitakami of the loyal three depicts their faces as having ranger-style eye holes or visors. Not far off to think that the ranger show had some influence on this since it was the sentai series airing in Japan during Scarlet and Violet, and it had just ended when the Teal Mask was announced. Kinda fitting since the Paldean dex introduced Lokix, a Pokemon based on Kamen Rider Black and Black RX. Kamen Rider and Super Sentai often having a back-to-back series billing in Japan called Superhero Time.

Imagine if a villain team caught the Loyal Three and Pecharunt to aid in their schemes. Like I could totally see them being happy to work for Neo Team Plasma, Galactic, and Flare. You know what’d be really dark, if Louie from Pikmin ate the Loyal Three and Pecharunt.
Pecharunt: "I'm advocating for an obscene amount of money to be allocated to the toxic mochi fund." Trainer: "Yeah, but what will your party do for the working man?" Pecharunt: "Feed toxic mochi to them." Trainer: "Oh, sure, you say that NOW."
I waited for this video for a long time because this is actually one of the more creative stories Gamefreak made. However I didn't expect the Pokémon version of Momotaro to be the more accurate. I thought the twist was the heros being turned into villains but they're not thar far away from their original incarnations. It's still creative in a way because many pieces of japanese media incorporate Momotaro into their story as a 100% good hero character and Pokémon of all things was the actual somehwhat creative and original one. The japanese name of Pecharunt "Momowarou" is also a neat reference

3 little pigs based legendaries? Wolf: Dark type. Somehow also flying type, to reference the: "huff, and puff, and blow your house down". Straw and stick pigs: grass/normal types. Makes sense for them to be weak to the wolf's typing. Brick pig: Rock/normal type. Strong against the wolf, set up as their leader.
34:41 Yea that's why I named mine Momotaros, as a reference to Kamen Rider Den-O. Momtaros is an imagin who takes the form of an oni. All the imagin are based on fairy tales and/or nursery rhymes (there's a Piggies Imagin which is one being with a pair of independently thinking heads on its shoulders but they're mostly based on fairy tales)

Ogerpon is just a silly little goober of a girl who wants to attend the festival but is deathly shy, and has had bad interactions with the locals, so she hides her face behind masks to try to fit in better and not scare people. She is a wholesome bean who greatly deserves headpats and love and to wear her cute masks and be happy. I adore her so much, what a delightful Pokémon she is.
Literally the best edutainment channel. I have nothing to say, I'm just posting a comment to feed the algorithm, because videos like this need to be seen, especially by kids, and especially especially by non-Japanese kids. Though I guess I could take this opportunity to express my delight at Maxill getting to play hero! :D
Nah there's no way this *isn't* H. Jon Benjamin. I'm sure someone could mimic the voice, but imo H. Jon's voice is too iconic and unique, so either someone has perfected his silly tone and mannerisms (/pos) or it's just him.
Speaking of dancing incidents, I immediately thought of the dancing cat fever of Minamata The cats seemed to "dance" before dying due to mercury poisoning coming from industrial wastewater
A minor thing to mention: The zombified villagers all saying Mochi Mochi is another flipping of the script. While being a common greeting phrase it began as a form of superstition. Supposedly possesed people could not respond with mochi mochi as greeting or the spell would be broken. Having the villagers say nothing BUT mochi mochi is just the reversal of this idea.
Isn’t that “moshi moshi”? Unsure if the kanji would let the homophone stand or if the chi and shi make the meanings very different. Either way they sound similar enough that it sounds a likely influence.
Funny enough, Gloom can also be considered a pheromone pokémon, and it's a poison type 👀 Also, the zombie connection was very much intentional; in the code, the possessed trainers are called zombie trainers 🧟♀️🧟♂️
Oh that explains Don Brothers and why Don Momotaro always enters the scene with festival dancers and yelling "MATSURI DA! MATSURI DA!" (It's a festival! It's a festival!) Plus he gets physically abusive to his teammates when he morphs.
Still weird that Pecharunt feels like it'd fit in as a Yo-Kai in the Yo-Kai Watch franchise, to the point that the mind control mochi could be inspiriting instead of possession and it'd somehow fit really well, to the point I made a call outpost an hour after Mochie Mayhem had dropped. I'm now less mad about it and more mixed tho, because I'm both a Pokemon and Yo-Kai Watch fan. If they somehow had a collab I'd cry tears of joy
@@tobysinbad it's the way it's portrayed. I don't think specifically purple auras that wrap around a person to show they are inspirited/possessed are a common thing in Japanese folk lore. You look at them side by side and it's obvious why that's what my mind went to
You never know, especially with media/genre tropes, Maybe it is! Ever noticed that in alot of, especially eastern, video games purple is the color of evil?
@@DWandLoZfan_and_Knuckles yeah, but the sheer amount of similarities are what make it noticable. It's specifically how it looks like specifically Yo-Kai Watch's Inspiriting, the purple aura in the same way, the characters in universe not noticing, it being caused by a ghost, whether it be via direct possession or something causing it (aka food this time) Like anyone saying that it's just a coincidence has never played a Yo-Kai Watch game
I think I got more invested in Ogerpon and Pecharunt's squad than I did even sandwich lizards and the paradox mons... Evil baby Momotaro and his poisonous besties commit accidental murder and sweet baby ogre (who is also kinda peachy?) pulls out a Gets-You-Stick and DESTROYS THEM. (and at a type disadvantage too!)
I have a headcanon that the Loyal Three talk & act like the three thieves from "The Princess Bride." Okidogi is Fezzik, Fezandipiti is Inigo, and Monkidori is Vizzini.
I never realised this before, but Pecharunt looks a lot like a Tapu with how it has the "split shell" arms design like the Tapus. Could it have been a guardian of something at one point? Also, love these deep dive videos. Never knew about the darker version of the Momotaro tale and I love how the DLC subverted the story by having the Loyal Three be the actual villains rather than Ogerpon.
When Austin started talking about the water mask representing sadness, I couldn't help but think of Inside Out and I really wanted the other masks to fit 😂
Ogerpon easily stole my heart, but knowing about all the nuance of her design and origins only makes me love her more. All that and more is why she became my new favorite of the entire Pokédex. That, and she’s a Grass-type, and I love Grass-types.
I love the effects put on for Pechrunt's stand-up routine. Got the voice to ALMOST be H. John Benjamin. Next playthrough (if ever) I'm naming my little runt Sterling or Dutchess. (Archer fans?)
It honestly goes to show just how powerful Pecharunt’s chains are as they bound so much with the Loyal Three that they became poison type, likely over another type they had beforehand. You can’t tell me that the Toxic Chain didn’t overwrite Fesandipity’s flying type.
I think that ogrepon might also be slightly based on shuten-dōji a Japanese myth if a kid born with superhuman strength that was really naughty, so naughty that one day, after putting a oni mask to scare some monks, the mask fused to his face, turning him into a real oni
I hate how I was a part of the joke during pecharunt standup. The immediate mochi launch to robotic "please laugh now" got me. Lockstin bits are genuinely entertaining
I like the 3 legendary pigs idea, though!!! Butaleaf (Flying/Grass), Butacrag (Flying/Rock) and Butadome (Flying/Steel), and their *protector*, not enemy, Howlone (Dark/Fighting). Long ago, Howlone would save each of the legendary pigs from a disaster, and build each of them their homes. Howlone could be seen testing the strength of the Pokemon's new shelters using its breath in a technique called "Power Howl", and with each time, their fortresses wold withstand it a little bit more, but it was always holding back, because it was trying to protect and teach the other Pokemon. One day, human settlers arrived and witnessed this, deciding instead that Howlone was attacking the young Pokemon. Having never seen humans before, the 3 pigs ran in completely opposite directions, and, unable to find their way back to each other, would not reunite so easily. Howlone would face a much crueler fate, as the humans' weapons would wound it, and scare it off. These wounds being the reason why it embraced the Darkness.
15:11 I DID NOT COME HERE EXPECTING TO HEAR "EI JA NAI KA" COME YOUR MOUTH BUT MY TAIKO-PLAYING HEART IS SO HAPPY! Edit: "Ei ja nai ka" is a taiko song written by PJ Hirabayashi and San Jose Taiko based very much off of what you described. It's a fun piece to play, dance, and sing!
A few things, the Scarlet dex entries of the Loyal 3 say they were transformed after they were enthralled by Pecharunt. Okidogi's Scarlet entry: After all its muscles were stimulated by the toxic chain around its neck, Okidogi transformed and gained a powerful physique. Munkidori's Scarlet entey: The chain is made from toxins that enhance capabilities. It stimulated Munkidori's brain and caused the Pokémon's psychic powers to bloom. Fezandipiti's Scarlet entry: Fezandipiti owes its beautiful looks and lovely voice to the toxic stimulants emanating from the chain wrapped around its body. What I'm getting at here is that the Loyal 3 were something else entirely before Pecharunt enthralled them. Okidogi wasn't big and strong, Munkidori wasn't a psychic powerhouse, and Fezandipiti wasn't captivating. The toxic chains made them that way. Also, you got where the masks came from wrong. It wasn't Ogerpon's companion who made the masks. The local mask maker made them because he felt bad for how the people of Kitakami shunned Ogerpon and her companion for their "unusual appearance." Remember, Ogerpon and her companion came to Kitakami (possibly from Paldea because of Ogerpon's orange and grape influences, but that's my own theory). They weren't locals.
Three, you mean? Though Munkidori, Fezandipiti, and Pecharunt do also take once-unique type combos from the likes of Galarian Slowbro and Slowking, Galarian Weezing, and the Gastly line. (Would include Okidogi, but there were already two Poison/Fighting families.)
Well many people have problems of how pokemon has turned out with its legendary pokemon lore and some questionable plot that aren't as good and epic as before. But I would say that throughout these years pokemon world has become alive it's no longer just legendary and normal pokemon. Now we have genetic mutation, alien and many other varieties now the pokemon world feels more "realistic " and with countless possibilities that we can theorize.
You forgot the funniest thing about Momotaro: In the original he set out when he was an adult in his 30s or so. The more the story got told the younger he got!
In the story Momotaro uses kibi dango 🍡 (millet dumpling) instead of mochi (which is made of rice) which I think they used that because both Momotaro & mochi start with “Mo…”
One thing I've noticed with three of the masks is their names. *They represent parts of a traditional Japanese home;* hearth for warmth and cooking, well for water, cornerstone for structural support of the house. To me, this suggests Ogerpon's longingness to feel safe and at ease, as she and her master were made unwelcomed by the village and had to resort to living in a cave.
Ogerpon is easily my favourite new Pokémon from not just this, but the Indigo Disk DLC as well, and even I hadn't noticed some of these things about her!
Between this and Super Sentai Donbrothers which was airing a little before the Teal Mask's release the legend of Momotaro was getting a lot of love in the form of children franchise adaptations.
Another great vid! I also love how more and more you are referencing the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. As someone who is a big fan a both series as well, it really brings a smile to my face. Keep up the good work!
Listening to your Ogerpon explanation here in this video made me think so much about the TMNT and how their personalities also fit the confusionistic range of emotion. Michelangelo (Pleasure, dude is hedonistic, all the food, fun and games), Rafael (anger, duh) and Donatello (sadness, as the idea of a troubled genius is so popular) are very obvious, but I am still trying to fit Leonardo into Joy (maybe prideful joy? So proud of yourself you're happy?)

Something I find to be interesting. If I'm not mistaken, Pokemon did a quest that was a vague reference to Momotaro back in Legends Arceus, too. In the quest "The Sea's Legend", professor Laventon notices an unusual pokemon floating down the river and into the sea. In order to find this pokemon, you need to follow the Sea's Legend story, the text of which can be found in Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl. According to the story, a brave human wished to travel to the ocean to meet a prince among pokemon, and he asked the pokemon of the sea to join him. In recognition of his bravery, he was joined by 3; a Mantyke, a Buizel, and an Overqwil. Together they set out in a boat to the seaside hollow to meet the princely pokemon. Now, the particulars are pretty different (there's no antagonist, for one; the group just wants to meet this amazing pokemon), but the idea of a brave human meeting 3 loyal animals, and setting out in a boat to meet his destiny feels like the Momotaro story. Additionally, the quest begins with Laventon seeing a pokemon floating down the river, like Momoatro's peach floating down the river in his story. In order to complete the quest, you need to collect those 3 sea pokemon, then go to a particular location in the Cobalt Coastlands, only in the evening. That location happens to look like 2 huge horns or spikes jutting out of the ocean. Perhaps in reference to the depiction of Oni Island in some versions of the tale. Finally, you're able to go to the seaside hollow to find the princely pokemon of the story; Manaphy. Perhaps I'm reaching, but this feels like they were going for a story that has inspirations from the tale of Momotaro, using Sinnoh pokemon in place of his 3 companion animals. So it's interesting to see them going for a much more overt version here, albeit with the roles *entirely* flipped around.
26:25 Yugioh players know this as the poorly localized "Kunai With Chain" though even the original Japanese name incorrectly calls it a "Chain-Attached Boomerang"
My relationship with the pokemon franchise is complex, but even if I haven't bought the dlc I'm always excited to watch Lockstin explain the lore of new Pokemon
Something I find interesting about Ogerpon's non-Teal Masks is that they're all named after parts of the home: the Hearth, a Wellspring, and the Cornerstone of a home. Maybe because the masks offer Ogerpon comfort/remind her of "home" in her old friend?

Oni General: “No more, Momotaro! Grant me mercy, I beg of you!”
Momotaro, absolutely fuming: “You, who are *without* mercy, now *plead* for it?”
So many old tales are far darker than the modern interpretations. Many of the Disney movies are based on fairy tales that are originally incredibly dark
I looked up this supposed original version and found jack and all.
That is a very good point
Never thought that Pokemon of all things could be this subtle, profound, and self-reflective in providing social commentary.

A couple story corrections:
Ogerpon's human friend was not the creator of the masks.

@@TheMasterBlaze yep, Ogerpon deserved her justice that we gave her. Kieren had every right to idolize her too, imo!!!
Another cool thing about Ogerpon’s masks is that resemble different plants. Hearthflame is a maple leaf, Wellspring is heart shaped ivy, and Corberstone is tree bark. The Teal mask also looks like a collection of palm leaves.
In some sense of irony, Ogerpon represents the nature of Kitakami making it more of a mascot than the Loyal Three ever were.

Yeah, it's pretty similar to the idea of making a deal with the devil, selling your soul for what you desire
An Oranguru that wasn't bright and a Rockruff that was bullied maybe?

When you mention the chains look like they don't belong, I like that the beautiful Fezandipiti is the only one with the the same colors as the chain in his design. Like it's an accessory matching his outfit

That's technically not what happened.
Yep I'm familiar with that
which can also be called "kibi mochi" since Kibi dango uses gyūchi, which is soft mochi
I was already comparing Pecharunt to Dionysus, but it really is kinda surprising how Momotaro also has some of those cult-y elements as well
Dionysus fucks too much for a Pokemon game to reference him too strongly
Using Dionysus as an influence kind of makes sense, as Pecharunt’s battle theme is basically a party remix of the loyal three theme. He was the not-always-fun-loving party god dude did some scary shits.
Hey Lockstin, here’s an idea. Why do 2 of the 3 bat Pokémon lines (not counting Lunala) evolve with high friendship? Speaking of high friendship, are there lore reasons dictating what species require high friendship evolutions?
because the woobat line was meant to be the unova equivalent of the zubat line
@@wildstarfish3786that’s the Doylist explanation. We’re looking for the Watsonian one
It does make sense for Woobat, at least - it's got that whole love motif, after all. Golbat...yeah, that's trickier.

Woobat has the heart and you're meant to "woo" it in order for it to evolve
as for Crobat... I'm honestly not sure.

He does buy the loyalty of his animal companions via rice balls, but the attack on Onigashima is much more an unprompted assault for glory than anything else"
Also my guy you are so close with Ogerpon, the name is a dual meaning: -pon as in "friendly" but also -pon as in DEKOpon, a type of japanese orange/citrus

A minor thing to mention: The zombified villagers all saying Mochi Mochi is another flipping of the script. While being a common greeting phrase it began as a form of superstition.
The local mask maker made them because he felt bad for how the people of Kitakami shunned Ogerpon and her companion for their "unusual appearance."
Remember, Ogerpon and her companion came to Kitakami (possibly from Paldea because of Ogerpon's orange and grape influences, but that's my own theory). They weren't locals.
4:40 lancer named that kid
No asgore did
You know when mind control and death in the first 20 seconds you know your in a treat.
Love this deep dive! Can't wait for more. ^_^
Edit: Momataro was also featured in a twisted version of Spirit Hunter NG.
How did you watch the entire video when it’s 37 minutes long and hasn’t even been posted for less time than that
@@pinacolada9793 Because I've noticed the origin videos are usually deep dives. Thus why I said that.
I find it hilarious how in one fell swoop, Ogie took four different type combinations that used to be unique.
I may have miscounted how many other masks Ogerpon has besides her usual one.
they might get peach-forks to this standup
Well many people have problems of how pokemon has turned out with its legendary pokemon lore and some questionable plot that aren't as good and epic as before. But I would say that throughout these years pokemon world has become alive it's no longer just legendary and normal pokemon. Now we have genetic mutation, alien and many other varieties now the pokemon world feels more "realistic " and with countless possibilities that we can theorize.
Why did the Pecharunt comedy show sound like H. Jon Benjamin 😂
I always thought pecharunt mouth was a bow tie
0:58 the multiverse of lockstin
Lockstin and Gajin goomba should really do a vid together. Would love to see that!
You forgot the funniest thing about Momotaro: In the original he set out when he was an adult in his 30s or so. The more the story got told the younger he got!
Ironic how I just got my Wellspring Ogrepon in the mail today and there's a video all about Ogrepon and more!
In the story Momotaro uses kibi dango 🍡 (millet dumpling) instead of mochi (which is made of rice) which I think they used that because both Momotaro & mochi start with “Mo…”
Worth to mention
Pecharunt's name also sounds like Petulant
21:18 good to know the meme has lasted centuries
One thing I've noticed with three of the masks is their names. *They represent parts of a traditional Japanese home;* hearth for warmth and cooking, well for water, cornerstone for structural support of the house. To me, this suggests Ogerpon's longingness to feel safe and at ease, as she and her master were made unwelcomed by the village and had to resort to living in a cave.
0:37 Was that Jon H Benjamin (Archer) doing stand up as a legendary Pokémon?!
Hell yeah! Finally! Been waiting for a deep dive on this.
tfw this video is meant to explain how the story of Momotaro influenced Pecharunt but you instead learn there was torture in the OG Snow White story.
Mm-hmm. Gives new meaning to "dance 'til you're dead".
HELL YES!! OGERPON (and the other ones) VIDEO
I learn so much from your deep dives! Thanks as ever for these!
Ogerpon is easily my favourite new Pokémon from not just this, but the Indigo Disk DLC as well, and even I hadn't noticed some of these things about her!
15:04 well actually there is a. Disney movie series with dancing zombies although it’s a bit different
Between this and Super Sentai Donbrothers which was airing a little before the Teal Mask's release the legend of Momotaro was getting a lot of love in the form of children franchise adaptations.
@MORISAKI WIN OFFICIAL be like: Exactly, and, especially, since, the last episode of Donbrothers aired literally the day before Pokemon Day.
14:59 THRILLER
Pecharunt also goes well with the naming conventions of the loyal 3. You can say "everything is peachy" 🍑
So proud of yourself you're happy?)
why make it Confucius when the musketeers are right there
Another Odd dance plague of our civilization.
The Macarena.
That was an odd time and it was inescapable.
Do you know what’s funny about that? Close to the end of this year my English teacher was dancing the Macarena outside her room because it was playing on her Alexa, later I was told that two of my friends were also dancing the Macarena, they joined in! I got a good laugh out of that.
@@darkabyssshine did you ever see That one Episode of Doctor Who?
This episode had Aliens take over the minds of anyone who had B Type blood, forcing them to act odd and dance?
We need to study why most humans react to the Macarena and very few don't.
@@peteynutt4104 brain aliens? That is what truly is being hidden in the area 51. The aliens who who invented the Macarena, there is no other excuse for why it compels people to dance.
Hi Lockstin, I really enjoy your videos! Decora is actually having a revival right now, it's really a millennial fashion from the mid 2000's. I've been wearing Japanese alternative fashion since 2009, and I remember seeing a crossover between Decora and Lolita fashion from 2007 to 2009 or so. :)
Or like me
Who bought the dlc way before the first part was available and during the week didn't notice the dlc was already out.
Something I find interesting about Ogerpon's non-Teal Masks is that they're all named after parts of the home: the Hearth, a Wellspring, and the Cornerstone of a home. Maybe because the masks offer Ogerpon comfort/remind her of "home" in her old friend?
