Competition between Icom and Yaesu is good, I only wish Kenwood would get back in the mix. With comptetiton comes innovation and hams are the winners. I'm slill using my FT450d for portable use.
It doesn't matter which radio you get if you don't learn how to use the features. Unlike a 2m FM radio, working SSB on HF takes a little more than entering the frequency and transmit.

Ford, Chevy, Dodge...Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, Flex, Elecraft etc. We hams are lucky to have all these companies competing for the best radio. I love my FTdx-10 and probably will for the forseeable future. However, it's entirely possible that Icom or Kenwood or one of the others may introduce a new radio that is better than the DX-10. When that time comes I may jump brands. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy the 10 and consider myself lucky that these companies are competing to make the radios better. Technology-wise, we live in good times!

I have a 7300 an it is a great rig, however, would like more sensitivity. Looked at the FtDX1o but the buttons around the dial are a no go for someone handicapped with limited finger movement. I got a FT710 almost as good sensitivity and more handicapped friendly. Hey if you like a new radio great to heck with sad hams.

I’ve had my 7300 for 5 years and the FTDX10 for one year. The 10 has a better receiver beyond a shadow of a doubt. It should as it’s a newer design and costs more than the ICOM. I still use my 7300 and enjoy lots of things about it. The Yaesu DNR and superheterodyne section in front of the SDR makes it superior for weak signals. But anyone with a 7300 has a great radio!

Agree ICOM needs to move forward Im an ICOM fanboy but its time. They need start by replacing the 7100 with something similar to the 705 head, it would be a tremendous seller. I think the 905 is a complete waste of time, there's just a lot going on for the average Ham to invest in. Just my opinion.

There is so much to like about the FTdx10 and your videos nailed just about all of the features I love. The one shortcoming, to me, and this is a trivial one, is that it doesn't use Anderson Power Poles for the power supply connection. There are a lot radios out there that share the same problem, so I'm not singling out Yaesu, by any means here.

I have both the FTdx10 and 101d I use for different things. My club runs 7300’s at the clubhouse. Both are great radios but I would take the yeasu anyway over the 7300. It just lets me pick up more on receive. Love running the 7300 but I prefer the yeasu interface. Maybe there is a quality difference but for me it’s just user experience. I can pull in a weaker station better with the yeasu, simple as that.

I guess I did it wrong. New guy here (still learning and humble) who bought the 7610 for a base, 705 for the field (with all of the accessories) and a 52A for HT. Why? Nothing really to do with anything other than having an identical twin I have to out do (you'd have to be a twin to understand). He's a 'sad ham' IMHO but has had his extra for many, many years (and the older equipment some of which dates back to the 70's to go with it!) . I think I will be content with these and all of the other gear one must have that I have acquired thus far. With all due respect the Yaesu FTDX10 is actually 2nd on the Sherwood list. Rob S later added a correction to the 6700's rating as indicated by the additional note of 'y' next to the rating ('108y'). As of 2017, the 6700 fell down on the list. Making Yaesu the TOP 3. Here's the addendum:
NOTE: Tests in 2017 of a second 6700, and by the ARRL of a 6500, no longer measured a dynamic-range increase with the preamp ON. ***The 108 dB value is no longer valid***. 2 kHz dynamic range is 99 dB, same as 6600M. As with any radio, only use a preamp if it improves copy, and usually only on 15m and up.

Icom really need a new updated 7300!
I think they wasted their R&D money on the 905 as it has a limited audience, especially at that price. I'm hoping they are also developing a new 7300, their bread and butter model for the masses. A Shack-In-The-Box with current tech is a must but no one is making anything that so many Ham's are crying for.
The DX10 is good... as it stands today, I'd buy the DX10 over the old 7300.

Thanks for sharing! It is valuable information coming from someone who has been in both camps and not blindly taking sides. I bought an ft991a shortly after buying an ic5100. The ui of the ic5100 had me a bit disappointed about how poorly the touchscreen on the ft991a is utilized. Now I am perfectly comfortable with the 991a no real complaints. But now as a man with many yaesu and one icom I find myself wishing for some of the forward thinking and intuitive UI we saw with the little dual band id5100 would be implemented in other radios. I have been interested in the ftdx10 this helps solidify that interest. Cheers

Here we go with the Ford vs Chevy vs Mopar guys. Lets face it, they all have good points. Newer tech comes along. Anyone buying the Icom 7300 won’t regret it. They’re getting fantastic value for the money. The Yaesu is clearly a better radio by many measures regardless of fanboy loyalty. It’s also $400 more (if on sale). Thats a significant difference. Theres nothing wrong with the 7300. But if you have the money it’s clear the Yaesu will get you a better radio. Is it $400 better? Clearly most (but not all) reviewers think so both subjectively and objectively. Will Icom come out with an updated/replacement 7300? Most assuredly. Eventually.

Hehe... love it Bob. I have a DX10, my first *new* HF rig, and wow, it's such a nice radio... it can pull signal out of nothing but noise, hands down better than the 7300. I've never owned a 7300, but I've sold lots of them (several last week), It is an outstanding radio in many aspects. First of all, Icom has the menu system down... it is beautiful and easy to use. But the technology in it is five+ years old, and the DX10 just has better tech as Sherwood and others have shown. I have no doubt that Icom will release a follow-up radio sometime in the future that mitigates this.
Anyway, I hear these arguments on all sides all the time. Chevy vs Ford, XBOX vs PS5... same old thing, lol.
Glad you are enjoying yours... sold one of your Idaho buddies one earlier this week, he should be getting it soon (as long as the snow over the mountain doesn't delay it lol).

I have the FT-991A for Portable Ops and now the FTDX-10 which replaced my IC-7300 as the base station. I rated the IC-7300 as easier to operate, easier on the eyes and every bit as good to recieve (in fact a little better) as the FT-991A.... but the FTDX-10 is a better reciever than both and I find it much easier to operate than the IC-7300. I always thought the IC-7300 was awesome, and it was at the time for cost/value, but the FTDX-10 (although about $399 more) is so worth it. Ergonomics on some of the buttons around the dial take some getting use to coming from the IC-7300... but aside from that..... I love the FTDX-10 and would do it again! Some bargain hunters will find alot of really good used IC-7300's on the market which is good news for new HAMs or folks looking for a backup radio.
Also noteworthy is the hybrid front end on the FTDX-10 does not Overloasd (OVL) which I would constantly see on the IC-7300 in high noise (QRM) or adjacent channels on a crowded spectrum. The FTDX-10 allows me to hone in better. OVL as I understand it... just creates distortion.

Regarding reception and reading Sherwood's list, do not believe that you will make more QSOs or pick up more weak signals. Well used ICOM (lots of possibilities with the DSP) can work miracles. The Yaesu is a device to master like all transceivers. I would summarize that for the current price, I would take the 7300 ($999) and for the pleasure and the screen but by adding $500 it would be the FT-DX10 (and not the 710 for the little price difference) 73 HB9HNU

Generations of hams have competed and achieved awards with modest equipment, providing testimony that it’s the skill of operator not the equipment that gets results.

Sorry Bob - learn how the Sherwood listing is ranked - not sensitivity, but selectivity and dynamic range. Both rigs are equally sensitive....in fact both have sensitivity levels that can theoretically receive way below the noise floor. So the only factor that would allow one to hear better than the other, is if the one has a lower noise floor. When the FTDX10 is used in an area full of other transmitters and powerful signals, it will have a lower noise floor and therefore be less affected by these transmitters in its close proximity than the 7300 - the IC-7300 will be badly affected in a multi contest station or a multi station field day, and this is what the Sherwood listing ranks. If there are no excessively strong stations on the band you are operating, then they both hear equally as well. PS I own both a FTDX10 (1 month) and 2 x IC-7300 (7 and 6 years). There are some aspects of both rigs that I prefer over each other. I live in Africa, far from other hams, and what I hear from a really weak signal on my FTDX10 I can hear equally as well on my 7300 when using the same antenna.

Sad Hams are really only trying to justify their choice of radio. They can't possibly accept that their choice isn't the right choice for everyone. Honestly, it's very sad that their whole ego can be so easily threatened by something so basic, so simple. Unless you buy the same equipment they have, they simply must tell you that you're wrong, with absolutely no idea of your personal needs.
I was in a Best Buy, and the kid there pounced on me trying to sell a new Samsung phone. He just put on the hard sell, never once asking me anything. I finally told him it was the worst advice I'd ever been given. All my personal tech is Apple: iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, AppleTV, Apple Watch....why in the world would I throw a monkey wrench Samsung into the mix? He just kinda stood there, blankly looking at my forehead.....

I think ICOM has a firm handle on the QRP market at least for now. They really did their homework with the 705 the user interface is awesome. Screen is damn near perfect. The menus work like all the other ICOM radios, utilizing the HT battery from the ID 52. Makes it a no-brainer to carry both radios with you on a pota or sota expedition. I think ICOM has even unseated Elecraft and the KX2 KX3 line.

Meh water under the bridge, everyone is a critic until they make a video they won't understand. Most youtubers don't give a crap what the 5% of dislikes say when they have a 95% or more like rates. UA-camrs have the luxury of being able to take the criticisms as they are and get to decide what they want to improve on. Your video was about what you think about the radio not what others should think about. Oh well for what it's worth I loved you video. 73

Your response to the guy who said the 7300 is NOT less sensitive baffles me. You replied with a picture of Sherwood’s chart. That chart is based on the dynamic range, not the sensitivity. And your reply about Icom defaulting to filter 2??? First of all all 3 filters are completely customizable so they can be anything you want. And Default??? The Icom remembers the last filter you used the last time you were on that frequency. It is not an automatic filter 2 setting.

Here is one that is going to make you kick yourself... When Yaesu released the FT-710 HRO was selling the FTdx-10 for $1299 and in good HRO fashion it was on my door step within a couple of days, we will likely never see it at this price point again.
In my opinion the extra expenses for the dx10 over the 7300 was worth it for me, but then I didn't come from a 7300 upgrading to a dx10 as you have, I came from a 891. My decision would have been much harder if I came from a 7300 as it is a really nice radio. The question I had to answer was the extra expenses (lower at the time) worth it. Thanks to N4HNH's video's it helped me see what the extra expense was getting me. His in depth content on every feature and demonstrations on how he would operate it provided a great picture of "what to expect". What sold me was the filtering performance and button/knob config however as with everything it isn't a magic box that can do everything.

IMHO I feel you do not fully understand the ftdx10, especially the IPO and the AMPs, watch the videos of N4HNH he explains them well.. Generally speaking you should use the IPO on 40m and lower bands and sometimes some ATT.
On 10m you normally should use AMP1 or AMP2 not IPO.
I have both the 7300 and the DX10, neither does well where I live in my winter home in an HOA very noisy, cannot hear weaker signals, I purposely purchased the DX10 because of reading it is the best in noisy areas. I compare them side by side DX10 7300, 746pro, they all hear the weaker signal about the same, and this is after watching all the VIDEOs and such explaining what to do to pull out the weak signals with the DX10. I have watched all the N4HNH videos he is the man on the DX10 using all his tricks and tips does not help in this noisy environment, yes the DX10 is a great rig but IMHO not that much in real world use receiving WEAK signals... 73s

Yaesu burned me on display failures... so jury is out until I see they have those issues fixed!
Icom also caters to the VHF weak signal crowd... why I have a pair of 9700's and a 7300(matches the 9700 so my desk looks better). Yaesu currently doesn't have a 2m/70cm all mode radio that is current tech. The 991A is a very old design... and the IC-905 will be a great add on to my radio desk when it comes out!
