I just watched Yaesu's Wires X part 1 and my head was spinning. On the other hand, I picked up a lot more from your presentation and even found out what Alexa looks like!
Great Hot Topic & Nice Video!! My local club just got the Fusion DR-2X repeater and we now are all trying to get our heads around these protocols and how they interface with each other.
Thanks for the info. I have been considering C4FM, but there is not a wires x repeater in my area. I think I will pick up an FT-70DR and an OpenSpot to feel it out before operating my own node. 73s.
Great that you made it that clear what the difference is. And a compliment for the simple, easy-to-understand clear language, which makes complex contexts understandable even for hams who do not speak English as their native language. 73 de Roland, DL4SFC
Thanks for the video Bob. Passed my General last week, still haven't bought a rig yet. Looking at a FTM400 for the Jeep. This answers a lot of questions about WiresX.
Thanks Bob for the video. This helps me understand a little more about the limitations of my OpenSpot2 as it relates to Wires-X. I’m perfectly happy running what I have through my two OpenSpot2s and accessing Wires-X through them. Thanks again Bob. 73s Billy N5WRH
Thanks Bob, you gave a very good explanation of Wires X and hotspots in this video. I have not seen any other videos with good explanations. I had to piece this topic together myself during the past few months when using my hotspots. Now I'm just waiting for the SCU-39 kit for direct access. I would like to know where the YSF and FCS networks originated and if they are operated by any specific entity? Thanks again!
I'm glad that you explained the Round Room - I saw the term used somewhere in the Wires-X software menus and it was not explained. Also, if you have repeater with a Wires-X room, how does the repeater owner make their Wires-X repeater room available for connections? Many of the repeater rooms (room xxx-RPT as a generic example) don't answer and connect (displays a no answer message in Wires-X) when I try to connect within Wires-X; however, I finally connected to 1 repeater room and talked on it. At least I know that my side of the connection is working.
Thanks for that! clears up a lot of confusion. Coming from DMR which I find fairly straight forward the YSF / WiresX system is more confusing that I was led to believe!
Oh man, you go to the point directly... We maintain two C4FM nodes with direct DMR connection via YSF2DMR and the cost is many many times down and with the use of Raspberry Pi their down time is near zero... We are connected to Brandmeister DMR with Yaesu gear and use Digital APRS at the same time with a special version of YSF2DMR..
Hey Manuel, I would love to pick your brain on this. I am working on linking DMR and YSF myself. I am running an YSF Reflector and we have a BrandMeister TG. Right now I have an RF link between the two, but, would like to eliminate that if possible. If you are willing, shoot me an email, I am good on qrz.com (KE7DUX).
Ethan, to link DMR and YSF you only need a PI-STAR image and a HotSpot. I improve the code to use Digital APRS and other functionality... So you only need a Raspberry Pi, a cheap chinese modem from Aliexpress and a microSD card with PI-STAR image. You can follow several tutorials. You can get the image here: www.pistar.uk/ Good Luck!!! 73s Manuel EA7EE
Sorry Ethan, but I misunderstand your question. YSF2DMR allows you to access DMR TG with Yaesu gear and a Hotspot, but It don't link an YSF room to a DMR TG. You need a special plug-in software to install into the master DMR server, you only need software and permission of your local Master Server maintenance people.
@@ya837 thank you for your reply. No, I think I misunderstood your first post, it is not your fault. I was thinking you were using the Pi-Star software to do the linking yourself, and not the master server. Right now, I have a link, but it is a physical RF link which introduces delay. We have submitted a linking request to the US Brandmeister team, but it has been over a month for response, so, we have been experimenting with our own solutions.
Great talk Bob. I have an HR200 connected to my DR2 repeater here in KY and you have covered many of the issues I had when I first started. I have came a long way since I started...would like to add the time and temperature to the system. It is set up in the AMS mode. Sam WB9SHH if you want to connect.
I just bought a new in the box Yaesu FT-70D for $100.00 from a guy at work who didn't like it and the battery was dead. So, new battery radio works great up here in Fairbanks, Alaska but no nodes or repeaters to use the features this rig has. I was thinking of a hotspot for use but after this video I'm thinking of a Wire X set up. My antenna would be external like yours for greater range, am I limited to using the Yaesu FT100 type radio or could I use say my Icom V8000 rig that I don't use very often? It's VHF only ... great video by the way I love you jeep; mine is a 1999 Wrangler TJ ...
So I have both, wiresx with Hri200 and several hot spots for ysf. For two weeks i placed both wiresx and YSF onto a large number of nodes each. After two weeks what I came up with is there are a lot of nodes on both systems but 98% of these nodes has ZERO activity. For Yaesu it seems there are like 5 channels that has some action everyday and both WiresX and YSF are connected on these 5 nodes. For me, wiresx was a very expensive mistake and a nice hotspot will give you a ton more usable options and save you a ton of money. One more thing I found funny is a lot of Yaesu users are cross-mode to DMR or D-Star and use these modes on hotspot where they told me they almost never use ysf as no one is on any nodes except for America-Link. I wonder if there will be more activity when the FT-3DR ever gets released. I have and use FT2DR but the one I grab most the time is the FT 70DR.
Im amaze of how technology continues to expand communications thru the internet, but that been said, after surviving hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico that brought the island to it’s knees in a terrible way, The only mode to communicate was voice and cw mode. All internet, cellphones, tv stations and radio stations towers were destroyed. The advances are exiting, but when TSHF, good old basic ham radio communications still the most reliable tool. KB0JRR
Mr Ramirez, you are absolutely correct Govt is ignoring redundancy and you have told us of the perfect storm, my condolences. In Australia we are fire ravaged and no-one in EM these days talks of redundancy. Even though we have lost nearly 1000 homes, no one is listening, no one uses analog any more
Thank you. We use Wires-X for our emergency net. Internet is a serious downside of the system connected to the repeater. It was down during our last practice net, so we heard nothing! N0QFT. Glen
I bought the FT5D and am new to digital stuff - to be clear, do I still need to buy one of those other accessories to use Wires-x - or is this radio enough? Many thanks! :)
@@seandriscoll6595 Yeaaahhhh but no Analog. I sort of regret my purchase. We have a local repeater with Wires but the community HATES it being used on a busy room.
Nice video! Maybe I didn't listen close enough, if so sorry. For Wires-X node you also need to dedicate a Windows computer to run the wires-X software. Maybe you have a shack computer that can also run Wires-X, fine but don't let it go to sleep or hibernate. Make sure Wires-X is entered in the start-up list so when the system reboots after a Windows update, Wires-X is restarted, and make sure auto-login is enabled so it doesn't set there for a day or two waiting for you to log in. I guess if you are in your shack frequently that is less of an issue. Ymmv of course. Again, thanks for the video! 73, Ken W0KAH
I've always been confused between the relationship of WiresX and Fusion. I was finally told activating WiresX is nothing more that being handed the remote control to a TV whereas Fusion is the TV. WiresX is only the control system to the sub menu and for changing rooms, it's not not a mode. What do you think of this analogy?
I love the analogy. Yes, the mode is C4FM. The Fusion component makes it possible for digital and analog radios to play nice together and WiresX is the internet component that lets us connect over greater distance than a local repeater.
I now understand it I just got license and I'm testing out fusion thru droidstar which basically just a connection to wirex I couldn't figure out why on my tablet I didn't have to put in a freq or desktop
Can a 'Node' be created using the HRI-200 bridged thru the internet AND without a FT-100 (Or other dedicated Yaesu Radio.) radio? I am able to connect to Wires X on a local repeater with my FT-991A. However, many repeaters lock out rooms. I can use my Pi-Star HotSpot to connect to other rooms of my choice by switching the host/reflector. I'd like to buy the HRI-200 but not necessarily a dedicated radio to access ALL of the Wires X capabilities. Best Regards.
Hey Bob thank you for sharing it awesome I would like to know a little bit about it I hear it's very good I don't know I'm going to listen to your opinion on it thank you 👍
Another good and very informative video by K6UDA, although I have to slightly disagree on the cost part. For analog setup, you really do not need a Yaesu radio for WIRES-X. I have a station here in Calgary using an HRI-200 connected to a Motorola Radius M1225 which I purchased from eBay for $60. It works just fine in the room where my affiliate club stations are connected.
@@K6UDA Not everyone in our group have C4FM radios. That is why our repeater is still in AMS mode and our node stations here in Calgary are still in analog configuration. But in terms of WIRES-X I haven't encountered any restrictions going to any WIRES-X rooms. Also being analog did not stop us from communicating with other digital WIRES-X stations (at least in the room we are using).
@@K6UDA I would also like to add that since we are still in analog, our WIRES-X stations currently have no remote room management using C4FM radios. Nevertheless, because our idea was to interconnect Stockton (California), Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary, all of our stations just stay in the same WIRES-X room.
Thanks for the informative video, Looking at upgrading at some point soon, most probably with Yeasu C4FM radio, 73 de 2E0EJJ, a fellow Moparian in the UK
What does FCS stand for or what is it? Just see the acronym, but no explanation. Trying to understand this digital stuff, and after watching videos, only more confusing. I take it YSF is Yaesu System Fusion.
I'm quite confused still. Love my ft-70 even with its quirks. Only talk on a local uhf repeater with c4fm. Would love to connect with wires-x using my ft-70 here in Vancouver bc but don't know how to do it successfully. I like your videos...
No matter how many “introduction” or “beginner” videos I watch on wires x/ fusion/dstar/dmr, nobody can explain what it is, and what it’s for. Chat room? Do I need internet? Or more importantly, if I do need internet to get it set up....will it still work when the Gov shuts down the inter webs?
@@EnuffsEnuff318 Good point. I have been researching DMR, Wires X (which is kinda the same thing as System Fusion I think, but maybe not??), Dstar, C4FM (maybe the same as fusion/wires X??) and all I can find is how people send messages, pictures, voicemails, texts, and talk....kinda like a cell phone, except with radios. This would be pretty cool as a backup to cell phones except for one thing....you need the internet to connect to a "node" or "hotspot"....even if you tap into a digital repeater, that repeater is hooked into the internet. So.....if SHTF and society had a collapse, which is why a lot of us got into ham radio, and ATT, Spectrum, Comcast...etc...aren't cranking out internet anymore because of zombies/libs...whatever, digital shit will be just radio to radio to repeater maybe? Sounds a lot like U/VHF. I honestly think it's just an old school chatroom for people into ham, and they use their radios, so they feel like it's different than an AOL chatroom in 1995. What am I missing?? Ham is vast, and lots of people are bored with certain aspects. Some QRP guys think 50 watts is lame....so, what do I know?
I've been watching all kinds of videos about wires-x and have a 991a and hri-200... had no idea I needed 2 radios for the digital side. Alexa explained it the better than almost every video I've seen on youtube. Doesn't the 2nd radio have to be connected to the radio 2 jack on the back of the HRI? If so, how can a handheld be portable when it has to be plugged in?
Always wondered what that button was on my FTM-400XDR. And I have the bundled cable to connect to my computer, but it looks like just another digital mode to invest in that I'll never use.
Thanks for posting. ( good video) your use of the terme"gateway" is confusing in the wires-x context. - Yaesu have suggested for wires-x the nameing protocol that a gateway is a "high powered node with good antenna and coverage" as opposed to the 20mw setup. This is helpfull in knowing if the "node" is got good general coverage in an area or is more for personal use around ones house I run a high power Wires-x node (Gateway) + room ( been running for some 4 years 24/7/365 now) and have yet to get my head around the interconnect into other networks. - I would like my room to be able accept D-Star cpable networks and analogue ( eg allstar and the like) as well as the native C4FM System Fusion connections and associated networks.
Thank you! Excellent video. I'm still a bit confused about the differences between the Node box and the Wires X cable. Do you still need 2 radios (one for the 'wire' Wires X node, and one for the client)? Or does the 'wire' Wires X node radio have access to the Wires X network directly? Also, can you access the Wires X network directly from the software running on the computer?
Nice Video Bob. Just to clarify, when I use Fusion in the simplex mode I know it's not going through any network and I'm not using WiresX. What about using fusion with a repeater that is linked to multiple repeaters via internet? W8FFG Bill
That is still a little confusing! It sounds like WiresX is tied to YSF systems that are physically connected to a radio and a WiresX box, not YSF network nodes that havd no physical connection to a radio and a WiresX box. For example, an XLX Reflector could be built with only a Linux computer running Debian that is connected to the Internet, not physically connected to a WiresX box and not physically connected to a radio. If I'm understanding it correctly, if you're using a SharkRF OpenSpot4 Pro, then the WiresX button on a Yaesu FT5DR will work with the YSF network modes that has no physical connection to a WiresX box and no physical connection to a radio, because the WiresX functionality on the Yaesu FT5DR radio is coming from the Sharkrf OpenSpot4 Pro hotspot. So, the functionality of the WiresX button on the Yeasu FT5DR then depends on if the YSF reflector is physically connected to a WiresX box and physically connected to a radio, OR if the Yeasu FT5DR is connected to a SharkRF OpenSpot4 Pro through a Wifi network connection. If that is true, then the WiresX button on the Yeasu FT5DR will get a more complete list of YSF Reflectors if you are using a SharkRF OpenSpot4 Pro with your Yaesu FT5DR radio.
you're killing me with saying Alexa... my Alexa jumps right in each time you do that and duplicates what yours says (almost).. lol Idea: Next time in post when you are editing, you can mute when you say Alexa (and just put "Alexa" in text up on the screen) and it won't cause everyones Alexa to start over talking your video.
@@K6UDA lol. I couldn't hear yours over mine. so after I shut mine up, I had to replay yours. Then you did it again. I like how you used a voice over that sounds like Alexis to read your script, nice on. And the brilliant part is, me and many others had to replay those sections of your videos, which is always good for your watch time metrics, so kudos there. :-)
Hey Bob, just watched this clip again, reallly good and explains heaps. I run a kenwood 50W 2m D-Star node, Ive been thinking about Fusion so a HRI 200 would be good, you eplained and righted some of the con-fusion 73 Pete VK3TQ / VK2LD
and this is why I like D-Star not only Kenwood D75A has it, it's a much more narrowband efficient digital transmission occupying only 6.25 khz, unlike fusion p25 and their mother occupies over 15 khz, this is why you could use the store also on the HF bands with a.m. is used,
I am an electrical engineer and software designer and the digital ham options are still confusing and bizarre. So many different, incompatible ways of doing the same thing and all require a multitude of adaptors, boxes, software. It seems kinda crazy so far. The hardest thing for me to figure out is if any of them are worth the time, money, or effort. Scratching my head.....
I always find a picture to be worth a thousand words-ergo network topology maps, etc help me to understand systems more than pure verbiage. Hot spots, rooms, nodes, reflectors, talk groups, etc. etc. - I’m no less confused about all this audio networking stuff.
When I got my Yaesu 991a, I tried out wires-X and fusion and I was very disappointed in the digital form of communication. The audio really sucks--it sounds muffled and like a computer generated voice when I talk to other Hams. I'm just glad I didn't purchase the 991a for the digital capabilities as I would have sent it back. I do, however, enjoy HF, 6 meters along with 2 meters/70 centimeters. I have purchased Yaesu FTM-7250DR I also have used FRM-3200DR how i can connect them to internet. Do I need wires-x or there are less expensive alternatives. I am just starting with Amateur radio and i am very new to C4FM and Wires-x or internet linking system. Thank You KD9QPL
You can use these radios on local repeaters both digital and analogue with no extra equipment. If a repeater is wiresX connected, you can usually have access to the world. You can also get connected through a hotspot or one of the yaesu cables and a windows computer to have full access to wiresX.
Wow, you did more in 15 mins to put into English than Yaesu did in their 3 hour presentation and volumes of online description , which was basically confuse their customers and potential customers. Also I have yet to find a forum or UA-cam , other than yours , that does nothing more leave you with a blank stare. I have my general Lic, an avid VHF/UHF, a degree in Computer Science and mathematics ... lived through the process of using D-Star and getting my TGIF Hotspot to work. After that I was convinced that if Digital remains this company specific proprietary and god for bid make it more complex , confusing and more costly it’s going to die. Thank you Yaesu for making that world more complex , confusing and costly. I was really wanting to expand into more digital and not going to DMR too confusing and difficult to program for me. Heck , DMR looking good compared to this. Maybe I am totally wrong , maybe Yaesu and most descriptions on the internet can’t explain a logical description and need for Wires-X. Wires-X, C4FM, Fusion , nodes , PC (I own a Mac), extra radio, more money...going backwards here like the internet before HTTP. I heard someone call Fusion ‘ConFusion’. Now I understand that statement . Great channel love your work and thank you for taking on this challenging topic.
Still confused.... It i setup my FTM100D as a node with the SCU-40 cable and used my 991A as a transceiver would i be able to access wires x analog and digital rooms? Or would I still need a hotspot?
I got a ftm400xdr, there are many rooms, and no one in them, America Link is where everyone is, pretty much everyone gets on there and asks for radio checks, I feel like I stepped back into the good old CB radio days....
Direct radio modes are for BS’ing only (ragchew) The HRI-200 is for going deep into setting up rooms and supporting data capture modes. Meaning you can setup room, store pictures from the camera Mike, text messages and recorded voice messages.
Alexa is missing the point that you made that with a 300 FTM100 and an HRI-200 you can make a node that has the coverage of a repeater. $295.00 Radio and $125 for the HRI-200. Not 7-8 hundred. And you can drive all over the county and use it. Or if you are content to be tied to that same radio then yes with the new firmware (without the need for the HRI-200) you can make a node, talk on that same radio at the same time etc etc. All without port forwarding that the HRI-200 requires. The video on youtube under "Yaesu official" explains all that. All in all you did a pretty fair and honest evaluation.
@@K6UDA IF you run out and buy everything new. Well, you got to have a radio to talk on any repeater or simplex? Why would you have one that doesn't do Yaesu C4FM? Sell that old analog only prehistoric thing. And it doesn't have to be an FT2D. The FT70D was on sale for $129.00. Still a decent video.
I wouldnt really compare it to a repeater. The internet goes down and the entire setup is useless. Not just that it looks interesting to setup but what's really the purpose? When you have cellular hotspot in your vehicle or even the internet at your QTH you'll still have access to the same stuff with an MMDVM hotspot but even better because with that hotspot I can cross modes and also use different digital radios besides fusion with it. Personally I feel it's useless and a waste of money. Another guy had mentioned the same thing Ive been thinking. Most of the nodes/rooms out there are completely idle with zero activity. Please explain to me what I'd have to gain by buying a wiresx HRI box vs just using a hotspot? Unless you have a Fusion repeater site I really dont understand what the purpose is.
Enjoyed your videos Bob. You left out that with Wires-X you can also download news, photo and audio files. Even America Link has them available and you can get to them with your FT2DR. Please edit out the part where you say "Alexa", keep in mind the each time you say Alexa that you are setting off OUR Amazon Echos! Yeah, it's cute but it's annoying for those of us that have them.
Thanks for the video. I have several Yaesu with wires. I just bought a 991 and have been looking for a good way to get on digital voice. I guess I’ll will use a hotspot for a while and switch out some radios to go with a new ftm-400xdr. Is there any word of maybe a software upgrade for the 991/991A to hook straight to computer to run your own node?
I was led to believe that there will never be a way to use the 991A as a digital device that can connect to the HRI-200. Crazy, I know, but that was from Yaesu technical support. Remember, you also need a PC.
Helpful explanation, thanks. I currently run Dstar but interested at looking at Wires X. Is Wires X software compatible with Mac? I have a Mac in the shack. Thanks!
Love your vids K6UDA! We are snowed in big time in the NorthWoods of Wisconsin so I am catching up on ham radio. Seems I see a Yaesu FTM-400xdr in the corner of your shelving.........would love to see you do a series on this very popular radio.
Bob, Thanks for the video. I just got an Open Spot 2 and I am very confused about the difference between YSF and FCS. Are they truly separate networks? Is there something I can get to with one of them, that is not accessible from the other? What is America Link? Is it a Wires-X room, FCS Room, or a YSF reflector? A diagram might be very helpful. Thanks again, Bob
So I am told the wires x on my 8900 is of no use but you mention analog wires x. Wires x seems hard to get a handle on. We have Fusion repeaters but use almost totally as as analog systems
@@Supernumerary If there's a wiresx node near you, then turn on HT, talk through repeater. This was more for the people who are considering running their own node. There's a huge difference between using a repeater and running a repeater.
Hi, the WiresX was great but what I want to know is how did you get Alexa to say the things you obviously fed her... something I've been trying to do for a while... not Simon Says I'm hoping and edited out the first part... Cheers.
Bonjour, I have two questions : - What increases the cost from 140€ + 300€ (the cost of the piece plus a FTM 100) to 700 or 800$, the fees for the inscription to Yaesu network ? - are the non HAM able to connect via btw Brandmeister system in France, and thus would we find such 14FRSxxx accessing via PMR frequencies ? Sincerly yours
I'm going to use US dollars for this. Let's assume you want to run an HRI-200 based node. HRI-200 cost $125.00, FTM-100 as a node control radio. $300.00, Then you need a radio to talk to your repeater. Let's add an FT2DR for another $300.00. Thats a grand total of $725.00. Swap that FT2DR out for an FTM-400 and you just spent a little over $800 USD I don't know anything about non hams from France accessing the system.
I understand from a hotspot you can access ysf only not wires x unless a ref is bridged to YSF. So, if you are on wires x can you access ysf or is that only possible if the wires x room is bridged to YSF?
If I'm on WiresX, I can access YSF reflectors that have a gateway hook into Wires. If I'm on my hotspot, I can access YSF reflectors. All of them. Some of them are gateways to wiresX.
Nice video. My FT-8900r says it can access a Wires repeater but I would need the "access numbers". Are you able to share the info for the repeater? Assuming I can reach there from G.V.
I'm getting ready to make the Fusion jump, but.........Here is where I'm confused...... When I buy a fusion radio and then access the fusion repeater (which will have some sort of internet connection) ,,,,, What do I need to access that repeater, when I'm out of RF range? Will the radio connect to my cell phone being used as a hotspot (just like my laptop does) or do I need something in between? If I need something in between, What do I need? Can I just use my laptop to connect to the repeater via voip, and just leave the radio out altogether when I'm out of town?
Provided the repeater has a wiresX room and a gateway to either a YSF or FCS reflector, you'll need some sort of spot (openspot, zumspot, rugged spot) connected to your iPhone or hotspot.
I should be getting my 3D Friday so with radio can I hook on to your system. If so what info do I need as far as settings id’s and so forth I’m in sac so I should be able to hit it
I just recently bought a FT3D and I'm thinking about getting the WiresX cable. Any thoughts on that? When I push the WiresX button it starts transmitting right away. I think its because I don't have that cable and doesn't know what to do. I love the radio so far.
Pushing the wires button tells the radio to push out a digital signal to the fusion repeater or wiresX node in the area. If your in range, it'll give back a list of places you can go from there.
Thanks Bob. Purchased a Yaesu 70dr as my first radio ... thinking I was going to do digital too ... No Fusion/Wires X repeaters within 100 miles (upstate NY / Catskill Mountains) ... No digital receivers anywhere around here .... I'm able hit one analog repeater in Kingston NY. Been looking at hotspots after all the old timers up here, when I asked about antennas, they said they use hotspots ... Now, you can get lost in the confusion of hotspots and manufacturers that youtubers have mentioned that are no longer in business. Even the openspot seems to be out? What do you reccomend as your favorite hotspot in 2020. Thanks ... great videos.
Great explanation. I’ve tried Fusion and find it WAY to confusing. Only a couple popular rooms to talk to. Open spot WAY easier and many different modes. I dumped my Fusion hardware. I think Yaesu shot themself in the foot.
Only a couple of rooms to talk to??? You are either trying to use a "Hot Spot" which is incredibly limited or you have no idea what you are doing. There are thousands of rooms. When were there only a couple of rooms? Back in 2014?
Bob this has dated material. There is a firmware update that allows direct connect to your computer on the FT-2, FT-3, FTM-100D and FTM-400D models. No more HRI-200 required.
I do not own a computer other than my iPhone, would this render the yaesu ftm 400xdr useless for wiresX, as I’m looking to buy this radio soon for that feature?
Would it not make sense for Yaesu to just drop a WiFi chip into their radios and have it connect to wiresx thereby bypassing the whole cable mess and hotspot crap? Throw me a bone here.
So I am in Sacramento and a complete idiot when it comes to digital modes. 2 questions If I purchased an inexpensive radio like the ft 70d could I hit your digital node or repeater. 2 If I come up and buy you a burger and a beer would you explain how this stuff works hihi.
Good explanation of the differences. Keep up the good videos

Thanks for this. I have an FTM100DR, but haven’t gotten into the C4FM side of it yet. This explains a lot. 73 de K6TP.
You will should get it soon from github.com/msraya/MMDVM_CM
It's VHF only ... great video by the way I love you jeep; mine is a 1999 Wrangler TJ ...
easy and informative! This is an older video but explains it all! Thanks!
This was awesome!
Thanks.
Just be sure if you run anything over low power that you have some sort of fan cooling your ftm-100. They will get hot fast if theres much traffic.
Thanks. Thats why we keep the link on a low traffic room and set the power at 20 watts.
If there is a fusion repeater in your area just use it like any other repeater.
I use an FT3D with the wiresx cable connected to my laptop with wiresx software on my laptop

Im new to Ham in Sacramento. Got my Tech. Will look into using this.
I never thought about a setup like that. How does that work with digital radios connecting to it?
The question going around in my head too. Seems to me.....why would you want to go through all that when you can just get on the internet.
Good video. Answered some questions. Love the Alexa. You got her well behaved🤣
Thanks for posting. ( good video)
your use of the terme"gateway" is confusing in the wires-x context.
- Yaesu have suggested for wires-x the nameing protocol that a gateway is a "high powered node with good antenna and coverage" as opposed to the 20mw setup. This is helpfull in knowing if the "node" is got good general coverage in an area or is more for personal use around ones house
I run a high power Wires-x node (Gateway) + room ( been running for some 4 years 24/7/365 now) and have yet to get my head around the interconnect into other networks.
- I would like my room to be able accept D-Star cpable networks and analogue ( eg allstar and the like) as well as the native C4FM System Fusion connections and associated networks.
Another great video! Super informative...You made a difficult subject for me easy to understand. Thank you..
If that is true, then the WiresX button on the Yeasu FT5DR will get a more complete list of YSF Reflectors if you are using a SharkRF OpenSpot4 Pro with your Yaesu FT5DR radio.
you're killing me with saying Alexa... my Alexa jumps right in each time you do that and duplicates what yours says (almost).. lol
Idea: Next time in post when you are editing, you can mute when you say Alexa (and just put "Alexa" in text up on the screen) and it won't cause everyones Alexa to start over talking your video.
Nothing is on accident.
@@K6UDA lol. I couldn't hear yours over mine. so after I shut mine up, I had to replay yours. Then you did it again. I like how you used a voice over that sounds like Alexis to read your script, nice on.

Scratching my head.....
where did you get that software that shows who's talking and where? thanks. (I have dmr and d-star and looking into getting a fusion radio)
so Q - what does the wires x windows application actually do and when is it needed and not needed?
M17 is coming!!
Can I access your repeater for wires. I’m in Walnut Creek. If not I don’t mind spending the bucks. Should I get the HT 200 or a node?
Still confused.... It i setup my FTM100D as a node with the SCU-40 cable and used my 991A as a transceiver would i be able to access wires x analog and digital rooms? Or would I still need a hotspot?
Do you know the model number of this "cable" that lets you connect a radio to a computer?
I got a ftm400xdr, there are many rooms, and no one in them, America Link is where everyone is, pretty much everyone gets on there and asks for radio checks, I feel like I stepped back into the good old CB radio days....
There’s some nuggets out there. Niche little rooms the have their out following. It takes some hunting.
Direct radio modes are for BS’ing only (ragchew)
The HRI-200 is for going deep into setting up rooms and supporting data capture modes.
Meaning you can setup room, store pictures from the camera Mike, text messages and recorded voice messages.
I'm still trying to figure all that stuff out. Thanks for the input.
K6UDA , I think all of us are figuring it out. Lots of changes flying at us pretty fast.
With the hri-200 solution you forgot to add another radio that your going to talk on. If it’s an ft-2 add another $300. There’s $725 right there.
I agree with you about being free to go where you want and use the system like a local repeater. Thats very cool.
@@K6UDA
IF you run out and buy everything new.
Robb McMahan I think it’s hilarious.
K6UDA you are evil :)
@@RobbMcMahan Also, I think I mentioned news and information at 2:44.
K6UDA I must have missed it.
I haven't heard of anything for the 991a
I was led to believe that there will never be a way to use the 991A as a digital device that can connect to the HRI-200. Crazy, I know, but that was from Yaesu technical support. Remember, you also need a PC.
crackin up here..... wiersx has been brought up here recently, thanks for the info...
not sure on th radio side of things though my understanding of wire-x is it was meant as a companion link to repeaters..
Helpful explanation, thanks. I currently run Dstar but interested at looking at Wires X. Is Wires X software compatible with Mac? I have a Mac in the shack. Thanks!
Nope. I had to buy a dedicated cheepo windows box.
Love your vids K6UDA! We are snowed in big time in the NorthWoods of Wisconsin so I am catching up on ham radio. Seems I see a Yaesu FTM-400xdr in the corner of your shelving.........would love to see you do a series on this very popular radio.
The FTM-400 is actually in my jeep. I'll be doing a review of that one soon.
Yes, YSF & FCS are two separate reflector systems. If one goes down it's easy to switch to the other.
So I am told the wires x on my 8900 is of no use but you mention analog wires x. Wires x seems hard to get a handle on. We have Fusion repeaters but use almost totally as as analog systems

This was so complicated. I thought it must be a comedy or parody. What happened to: “Me have HT, me talk thru repeater”?
@@Supernumerary If there's a wiresx node near you, then turn on HT, talk through repeater. This was more for the people who are considering running their own node.

Very interesting video, thanks
Hi, the WiresX was great but what I want to know is how did you get Alexa to say the things you obviously fed her... something I've been trying to do for a while... not Simon Says I'm hoping and edited out the first part... Cheers.
What would David Blaine say?? Or David Copperfield?
Bonjour,
I have two questions :
- What increases the cost from 140€ + 300€ (the cost of the piece plus a FTM 100) to 700 or 800$, the fees for the inscription to Yaesu network ?
- are the non HAM able to connect via btw Brandmeister system in France, and thus would we find such 14FRSxxx accessing via PMR frequencies ?
Sincerly yours
I'm going to use US dollars for this. Let's assume you want to run an HRI-200 based node. HRI-200 cost $125.00, FTM-100 as a node control radio. $300.00, Then you need a radio to talk to your repeater. Let's add an FT2DR for another $300.00. Thats a grand total of $725.00. Swap that FT2DR out for an FTM-400 and you just spent a little over $800 USD
I don't know anything about non hams from France accessing the system.
A room for Jeeps? Interesting. Big Daddy Ed Roth type drawing looks to be a Cuda, cam see the bilboards. 👍👍😎🇺🇸
Clear as mud!
Thanks Bob maybe I can get my vx-6r ready for transmission
Nice video. My FT-8900r says it can access a Wires repeater but I would need the "access numbers". Are you able to share the info for the repeater? Assuming I can reach there from G.V.
This node is on 144.430. no offset, no pl. It's setup as a digital node though.
Just google "Wires-X active node list".
there is a full list of nodes and rooms on Yaesu.com
LOL - underwater basket weaving. We did that too in the Boy Scouts.
@@K6UDA Thanks, ke0jwk

Nice job description the difference!
Wow. Really informative. So are C4FM and WIRES X the same thing? Just two different names?
WiresX is the network, C4FM is the digital mode just as FM and SSB are modes.

I do not own a computer other than my iPhone, would this render the yaesu ftm 400xdr useless for wiresX, as I’m looking to buy this radio soon for that feature?
You need to have a windows computer running the wiresX software to make wiresX work.
K6UDA thank you!
Would it not make sense for Yaesu to just drop a WiFi chip into their radios and have it connect to wiresx thereby bypassing the whole cable mess and hotspot crap? Throw me a bone here.
Wouldn't that be cool.
@@K6UDA YES but Yaesu is greedy.
Your videos kick ass!

Thanks.
So I am in Sacramento and a complete idiot when it comes to digital modes. 2 questions If I purchased an inexpensive radio like the ft 70d could I hit your digital node or repeater. 2 If I come up and buy you a burger and a beer would you explain how this stuff works hihi.
