- DIY 3x8 to 1x8 Mountain Bike Conversion tutorial. I'll show you how to convert your mountain bike from a 3x8 to 1x8 chain ring on a budget. This chain ring had some damaged teeth, and wasn't the standard 4x104 BCD offset, so I decided to swap it out to make it a more clean and simple MTB riding and shifting experience. All of this I did in under 30 minutes and it cost about $60. So if you want to clean up your MTB bike and simplify the shifting check out this tutorial on how to convert your bike to a single chain ring on the front to a 1x8 drivetrain.
If you are looking for a budget friendly way to convert your MTB to a single chain ring on the front to a 1x8 then definitely check out this DIY MTB tutorial. This helps clean up your handlebars, allow more room for a dropper seat post, and if you are not doing a lot of up hill mountain biking makes for a clean, simple, and great addition to your mountain bike. Below are all the parts and tools I used to make this 1x8 MTB drivetrain conversion.

Did the same with my commuter bike (used another kit tho). I don't need that many gears on that bike and the range is totally sufficient for inclines up to 8-10%. Also with 36 teeth on the front it's not too slow. Bike & cockpit looks much cleaner now. Love it.
I’m doing the same thing on my dimaondback sorento thanks for the video
A bottle cage bolt works perfectly to block off the unused shifter hole (after removing the barrel adjuster)
Thanks Man, That was Cool to learn🤘🏻☘️
Rock on! Thanks for watching
Think I'll try my first one buy ,I've got eight on the rear myself 👍,I'm still on square taper as its the strongest and best 💪
Getting ready to do the same thing on my giant. I only ride around town nowadays as I have nobody to ride with and no trails to ride. I just like the look of the 1X system.
1x is clean and simple. Best place to find riding buddies is to go out and ride. Ride safe!
Did same thing on my GT avalanche 3x9. Used the same chain ring actually but also replaced the cassette with one with a larger range make up for loss of granny ring since I ride a lot of hills.
Gotta love those big granny gear cassettes.
Nice..
i just bought a bike with a 7 x 2 drivetrain i kinda dig it!
There’s nothing wrong with a 2x or 3x. If you like it, you like it. Ride safe my friend.
Nice conversion. Did you have to use the chain guide? Did the rear derailleur work properly with the 32T chain ring in the front? I have a 3x8 and want to convert to 1x9. On a budget. Thinking of Alivio RD-M3100 and 9-speed cassette. But the RD-M3100 have a max capacity of 45T. Would it work with lets say 32T in the front?
No chain guide is needed if you use a narrow wide chain ring in front. I didn’t swap the rear cassette so no derailleur changes are necessary. If you decide to swap out the cassette you will have to have compatible shifter and derailleur.
Super budget 3x8 to 1x8 conversion: Just stop using the front shifter
(in all seriousness, nice build process overview & a helpful video!)
Definitely a great option as well.
The point of going 1x is to shed weight
@@jase6709 That's why this comment was clearly a joke...
@@sopwerdna Before or after you edited it?....
@@jase6709 nice try. i edited it 5 seconds after initially posting, before anyone replied.. but it was pretty obviously a joke if you're not intentionally being contrarian
thanks for the vid... your gonna laugh, I found a Walmart Roadmaster doing some upgrades on it..a 1x and wider handlebars and stem.
A bike is a bike. Have fun and ride safe.
Trek Marlin 4 has the Rear hub Formula DC31, it will be good if there is a 8 speed 11-42T freewheel available for 1X8 conversion, I cannot find any 8 speed 11-42T freewheel to suit the Rear hub Formula DC31
Probably cheaper to find a used wheel
you didn't disassemble, clean and regrease the crank bearings?? man, you were right there!
You mean the bottom bracket? It’s sealed my dude…
Those cranks you took off look like stx rc
my first time to see stx crank on suspension bike, its beautiful
a narrow wide chain ring is supposed to help prevent chain drop
True, but possible to lose a chain with a cheap derailleur without a clutch or chain guide.
You should of left your front derailleur as a chain guide that’s what I did with my 1x conversion.
There is no need with a narrow wide chain ring my man. Holds strong 💪
I was thinking about doing the sane thing to my mtb, what teeth would you recommend for the gear?
Narrow wide 30 tooth or 32 tooth for best gearing for climbing.
@dirtwolfmtb is it okay to use the 2nd of the 3 gears in the front?
Staying in the second acts like having a 1x
If you're all out of loctite you can use nail polish
Is it ok to use the stock 3 speed but just use the middle part of the gear?
Totally
Hi did you have to shorten the chain for this conversion
Yes, i did shorten the chain a few links.
A solution looking for a problem. If you have too much time & $$$, you can clean my garage for $50, thanks!
I think this cost me $30 😂
can i turn to 2x chainring
with 8cogs?
criterium build?
Yes, a 2x can be swapped as well.
You used the same bottom bracket. Didn't it affect the chain line?
It’s the equivalent as the middle ring when it was a 3X. Chain line Shifted fine
What size single chainring you use?
This was a 32T but they also make a 30T
What bb axle length are you using?
@@cpm_sv7770 depends on the bike. Spindle length is marked on the bottom bracket shell.
How is 8 better than 24 gears?
I only need 8-12 gears and we have some gnarly climbs
Couldn’t you have used the same cranks? Just unbolting the arms from the chainring?
No, they were road bike cranks with a different bcd bolt pattern, and the chainrings were toast. I wanted to install a good set of mountain bike cranks.
@@dirtwolfmtb you can buy 5 bolt single chain rings.
@@jase6709 these were an old road bike crank set which isn’t a commonly produced chainring bcd size
@@dirtwolfmtb They look like 110mm BCD which is easy to find, as well as many other sizes. They are stronger crank arms than the new ones you put on.
@@jase6709 not quite. Mountain bike cranks are much stronger. More weight and force is put on mountain bike cranks. And these were old cranks the previous owner installed and were an oddball size they don’t use much anymore.
how many t is the chain ring
32t is a pretty standard gearing.
Im thinking of doing a 1x9 hopefully it will work and any advice
Just shift into the smallest front ring first and see if you’ll like it. Most riding I’ve done on pretty heavy climbing hills a 1x9 or 1x10 or 1x11 works great. Just ensure if you do it you look at the cranks to see if they are riveted or not, if they are like this one, had to grab a used crank set.
@dirtwolfmtb ok thanks
@dirtwolfmtb I fond a single chanring 32T 104 BCD so I'll get that and try it
@@dirtwolfmtb will I need a chain guide
@@ragingrhino9995 if you got a chainring similar to this video that is a narrow wide you won’t need a chain guide
HOW MANY TEETH DOES THE PLATE HAVE? THANKS!
Depends on what size you want for the terrain you ride. Like climbing? Less teeth. Want geared for top end speed? Have more teeth. Trails are usually 30 or 32. Gravel are usually around 36.
@@dirtwolfmtb Thanks for the answer, it was very clear
Сколько зубьев передняя звезда?
32T
Good video and nice work with the dismantling and rebuilding, sensible torquing of the bolts etc. I would have just replaced the 3x damaged chainring with another 3x in good condition. To me 1x is a downgrade from 3x. Big loss of valuable gear range. For what? To make the bike 300g or 400g lighter? Not worth it imho. But that's just me. Cheers dude 👍
Thank you for the comment. I run 1x on all my trail bikes. Simple and everything i need on the trails. But everyone has their preference and that’s cool too. Cheers my man, have fun riding!
You dont need 3x in mountain i been doing mountain bike for 37 years and try each of the systems now im fine on 1x10 and 11x45 rear just my opinion if riding in flat lands yes you need bigger rings
I have to agree. Just leave it one the middle chain ring if you want one chain ring. If the chain makes noise at the extremes you have the other Chain rings to make it happy. It just seems dumb.
3x8 was absurd...but 1x8 is impractical...so 2x8 would be the best option, IMO...all my bikes are in 2x setup because it's faster on climbs and faster on flats.
There is nothing wrong with 3x or 2x or 1x but 1x8 seems poor gearing. If we had 5x it would be fine the derailleur only has to move one chainring at a time. Why people get hung up on 2x ot 1x especially I have no idea. I mean changing gear rear or front is not rocket science. Folk have been doing it for years. 😊❤
To each their own. Works fine and we have pretty gnarly singletrack
@@davidcawthorne7115 Had it done on my commuter (3x8 -> 1x8) and I don't regret it one bit. It's lighter, easier to clean, simplier to use and it looks much better like this. And truth to be told, you don't need a 3X8 set up for an hybrid bike, that's way too much gear just to go around in town. Installed a 44T front gear too and still can climb all the hills my city provides me with. Not to mention I can also keep a more than decent (and legal) cruising speed.
No inglis😔
You probably need to shorten the chain, it looks too long to me.
Thanks. Chain was replaced shortly after this video. And bike was sold.
2x is better in climbing and riding faster
To each their own. Ride safe my friend
No thanks. I prefer the range without huge jumps between gears messing up my cadence. If I really cared about saving weight as an amateur rider I would not buy a 30 lb+ bike and I would drink a little less beer.
To each their own. It’s no coincidence that new bikes are now deleting front derailleurs except on road and some gravel bikes. Making it simpler, lighter and cleaner. 1x12 does everything i need, and we go up 1000 feet of incline on singletrack 🤷♂️
