Sing For The Day! showcases Styx guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw's rousing 2016 solo turn with the Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra, under the direction of principal conductor/founder Liza Grossman. Alongside guitarist/musical director Will Evankovich and backed by the next generation of the finest high-school-aged musicians in Ohio, Shaw also celebrates the tenth anniversary of Styx's triumphant 2006 One With Everything performance with the CYO. Here, the CYO & Chorus bring new life to many classic band and solo tracks in front of an enthusiastic audience at the intimate Waetjen Auditorium in Cleveland, including "Blue Collar Man," "Girls With Guns," "High Enough," "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Crystal Ball" (featuring the debut of its never-recorded lost verse), and most especially "Renegade," highlighted by an epic guitar/violin duel between Shaw and a noted CYO alum. "It was so much bigger and more everlasting than any of us imagined it would be," marvels Shaw - now see and hear just how magical Sing was for yourself.

One the great things about UA-cam you can just stumble into something like this and have your mind blown
Shay Thiele Yes, that's exactly what i've just experienced -- what a treasure i found in the same way.
@@patriciasalvatore2394 . Even doen here in Australia it sounds brilliant, great orchestration also. :-)
No argument here, Shay. I am floored.
Shay Thiele exactly! tyep in transatlantic sessions if you just enjoy awesome music
Yes!The same thing here. Huge Tommy Shaw and Styx fan. This was awesome.
My husband of 40 years has been a blue collar worker for all of the years we’ve been married. We have struggled financially for many years and he works SO hard. He comes home so tired and worn out. He’s 60 years old now. Tommy has a way of expressing vocally what many of us can’t. This orchestra is fantastic and puts their everything into it!
God Bless You Both. My Daddy Was An Iron Worker And NEVER Got The Credit He Should Have Either.
My pops is a 30yr navy vet, Master Chief. After he retired, was a woodworker. I'm proud to say I joined him in his deck-building business. Blue collar indeed... America is Blue Collar. God Bless us all!
@@carolinelacourse6888My goodness! That’s some really hard work. A good man does whatever he can to put food on the table. God bless you and your father too.
@@philipalder6144 Amen to that! Your father sounds like an awesome man. May God bless you and your family and may God bless America! 🇺🇸
I relate more than you know. About to be 61 and haven’t worked in 22month due to sudden vision loss and cognitive issues. Money is drying up and options slim.
It was an honor to be there and a magical performance by all.
That must have been magical.
Wicked Awesome Indeed, You Were Blessed To Be There
My respect for Tommy went way up after I found these videos. His love of music comes through the fact that he cares enough to involve all these young people. Some will say he's doing it for money, but I do not believe that for a second. These songs are reaching a whole new generation.
Don't be so naive, it's ALWAYS, ALWAYS about the money!
Indeed. Interesting that none of the parents of these children performing were even alive at the time this single was released in 1978! I was off to the military around this release date and have grandchildren older than them!
💯 Agreed!
@Ron Williams
Thank you for your service! But I have to disagree. I was born in 1970. I have three children who would have been 17, 15, and 13 in 2016 making at least two of my children age appropriate to participate in this awesome collaboration. I would say the vast majority of their parents were young children in '78 to have kids in the late '90s and early '00s
100 % agree.
I'm 77 and still listen to Styz, but this performance was unbelievable. Tommy's voice is as strong as ever.
goodguystu Tommy Shaw is a joke
Stukka63
StyX not Styz, and never mind yur age, as long as yu like it.
I have all the albums made by Styz, and that's zero.
@@terrishuford672 -- That's an excellent statement to prove your extensive imbecility, as the evidence to the contrary is staring at us all right in the face above.
These Kids Will Never Forget Tommy. Thank You
That’s for sure.
They probably don’t even fathom the greatness yet but it will serve them well! It’s this gift that they received without even knowing
My dad worked in the Gary steel mills, for 45 years and supported his family. This song makes me think of all of his sacrifices. The shift work was hard on his health, and he didn’t get to live long enough, after his retirement.
This is an anthem to the working class, I loved Styx since Tommy joined, and I think I love them more, now.
You should listen to This Old Man off of Crystal Ball
I understand.
THIS IS PROOF AND EVIDENCE TO BRING MUSIC PROGRAMS BACK INTO SCHOOLS!!!!
We would probably start by taking away control of the schools from the animals and degenerates that run them now.
No doubt, music is my life and I'm glad I went to school at a time when music was still being instructed. This is actually the song (album version) I'm going to post myself playing on guitar soon.
That's about the smartest thing I've heard in a long time Christy S. In these times of uncertainty music is one thing that can do wonders for a person. The message of this song is so true for today.
Played Clarinet and Bassoon through HS and getting to participate in these type of groups were some of my fondest memories and you get pushed because all the kids are amazing.....

Check out TS and the CYO doing Girls With Guns. It is from this concert and I keep watching it because the bass player with the black headband has so much joy! She inspires me!
My favourite moment watching her totally into the music ……. Brilliant
Without a doubt one of the finest performances of tommy shaw. And the batch of kids backing him up!!! Fantastic
Me too, its just amazing!
God, this is a masterpiece!!
Three things that just dug into me from this video: The flutist that was singing her heart out along with Tom; the little girl in the front row of the chorus, who seemed to be singing with a voice larger than her stature; the young lady sitting at the drum kit in the upstage/stage left corner. Who I hadn't noticed before. Oh, and the look of pure joy on the faces of pretty much ALL of the musicians involved. Bring the arts back to our schools!!!
Hello, how are you doing? it’s nice seeing you here.
Nothing better than an orchestra comprised of very talented youngsters!
@@tommyshaw4050 Hi Tommy,
I was a radio Announcer in a metro station in Australia when many of your hits came out. Love your work. I came across the episode which featured you in the tv series "flipping Out" and have followed you since then as well. I love the way you showed the guys in the Darryl Hall how its meant to be done. You blew them away. To watch how you performed here in this video and giving those kids inspiration is amazing. God bless you.
Well said. The arts are still there in the schools, though you might have to look for it. I'm playing in the pit for a run of "Rock of Ages" in a local high school right now, and it is incredible to see the kids learning to perform and make music together. We should all take a lesson from what TS has done here, and spend some of our own time and energy sharing our love of music with the next generation.
Those are all great. So if you like those, one of my favorites is the boy in the middle at 3:37
Here in 2020. I've loved styx since 1977. How in the hell does he still sound as good as he did 43 years ago??
I think he sounds better than ever! I was just watching him on "Live at Daryl's House" on UA-cam and those two still sound incredible!
Born to sing!
@@samhendrix378 Damn it! You beat me to it! And you're 100% right! Some musicians were born to do one thing and one thing only: sing and play and Tommy Shaw is one of them! Another one is the great Sir Elton John!
Probably by not being an alcohol and drug addict.
agreed he's still got his vocal range which is amazing 40yrs on. Equinox was literally my first record - which I wore out playing too many times!
This performance is nothing short of pure unadulterated magic!
Amen!!!!
Positive things for our youth. So beautiful. What a guy
2 comments. First, just like everyone else, I cried on this and Foolin' Yourself......Second : You know there was maybe one or two kids that went home saying " Mom, we have to do this concert with some guy named Tommy Shaw" and immediately the parents AND grandparents were screaming and geeking out at the top of their lungs !
Hell yeah!!!😀
About five years ago my daughter (25 then) said she went to a music festival and there was an old guy named Eric Clapton there singing acoustic songs, and asked if I ever heard of him...born in ‘62 and you know my answer...Maybe?
Me too
Theres an Asian girl singing harder than Tommy at the beginning of the song. How freaking awesome
Damn right!

Ugh... Agree... Tried to watch and listen to it without weeping for joy, but failed...
My sons name is harrison and we are going to see Styx in September. He loves them as much as I do and I’m old..
I'd heard this song many times over the years but it was this performance that finally hit home for me and moved this song way up on my Styx list. I didn't cry, but I really felt for the guy's plight like never before.
Boy, does this song apply to our situation right now! The blue collar man makes this country.

Very underrated guitarist, and vocalist.
This song was so relevant when it came out. To hear it reborn is nothing short of genius.
Styx got me through my hardest time in Rockford, Illinois. Tommy really was a blessing to STYX.

Hauntingly beautiful rendition of this song. Blew me away. Tommy Shaw is incredible.
I grew up with Styx and this is amazing!!!!!
One of the most underrated vocalist of his time. I can’t believe he can still hit all of those notes. So many of the other great singers from that time period can no longer hit all of the notes they sang 40 years ago, but Tommy sounds exactly the same. What a talent! The
I think he means that when the subject is breeched of great singers of classic rock of that era hardly anyone at all will come up with the name Tommy Shaw amongst the rest, but he really deserves more recognition than that. No reason to get offensive.
Ive seen these dudes twice in PHX AZ for the past 3 years and yes he hits every note and rocks his guitar!!!
@@grilledspaghetti I think one of the reasons his name seldom comes up when talking about the great singers, is that it can be argued he wasn't even the best singer in the band which he performed. Dennis DeYoung sang lead vocals in many of Styx's top songs.

Well he sounds great. But his voice is sounds a tad lower. I'm sure the key is different. But it's absolutely well done, creative and just plain Tommy Shaw. He was the fire in Styx.

I love this man's voice. He's so talented. This version is heart breaking.
Tommy Shaw has performed this song literally thousands and thousands of times over the years on the road with Styx or while touring solo. It's literally like second nature to him. I love the flautist singing - mouthing the words " I"m just a poor soul in the unemployment line"

Ha, caught that myself. This is an encore with the same school. You can find the whole band doing all their stuff with normal rock tempo. Its an entirely different vibe for better. Amazing stuff for sure
She's singing and grooving just about whenever she gets a chance. Her parents raised her on the right music.
If this doesn’t bring tears to your eyes your not alive

Looks like a room full of passion. Awesome performance 👏👏👏
This is AWESOME!!!!! Notice how much the kids get into this. Incredible!!!!
That flutist was rockin!
You know these adults had the time of their lives while turning all those kids onto the incredible wonder of music. These kids will never ever forget this experience and most will keep music at the core of their entire life. God bless these adults for passing the love of music torch on to these young adults so effectively.
I would have done anything to play music with Tommy SHAW!!!!
Not sure what you mean by "'turning all those kids onto the incredible wonder of music". They (the kids) are all playing instruments in an orchestra - looks like they were already turned onto the wonder of music before this performance.
@@arcadegeek There is traditional High School Band "music" and then there is the kind of soul stirring musical experience that Tommy Shaw and the others involved helped these kids experience that gives them a whole other higher level "melt your face" experience far cooler than possible under normal circumstances. I think the selfless effort of Shaw and the others involved deserves praise. I bet a much larger percentage of these kids continue passionately playing and advancing with music then normal band members who miss out on such an experience.

Wow! I’ve always loved this song. It’s lyrics are so poignantly cutting & emblematic of the multitudes of silently struggling beasts of burden, common people who make this world function, every day, 24/7, without fanfare, Never any credit, just daily struggles. This version & it’s message of hope & love 2 the next generation is stunning. Wow! Wow! Wow...

My Bose headphones are on as well. Best way to listen to this masterpiece. This brings me to tears as do most of the other songs he does with the CYO. The sound. The arrangement. Tommy's magnificent voice. The chorus, too! The orchestra is fully into it, fully gets it! A special shout-out to the conductor who brings it all together, brings out the very best in these kids who will take music with them for the rest of their lives as so many on this page have. I was listening to Styx in the 70s... Still do! This is just stunning!
It's make me a little teary eyed watching these young kids having such an amazing time and such an amazing experience spending time on stage with one of the all time legends of rock and roll . . . and they are playing music from nearly 40 years ago
Truly amazing! To bring this young generation into this song is epic! Incredible performance!
Well said!
Orchestra is amazing for their ages.
10 years before this orchestra (with another kids obviously) make a DVD with Styx. I think Tommy patronize it or something like that.
All the kids must be part of their schools band, get good grades plus must audition for the orchestra. No pressure for these fine young musicians.
Amazing rendition of a wonderful song from way back. I first heard it in 1978. It never gets old.
If you love Styx then this is Heaven Tommy is such a pro he sings this like its the first time his voice is so beautiful and everyone did an amazing job music needs to be taught early I think anyone can learn just given the chance :-)

Lovely acoustics, and being in an orchestra is so fun when I had my time in the ring, but I would give anything to be one of those kids playing the rock song of my youth. This is an astonishingly different rendition from others I've heard. On Pieces of Eight and other UA-cam recordings, this is played at around a hard rocking 126 beats per minute. This performance is dialed all the way back to around 80. The result is a plaintive, elegaic sound, accentuated by the intro and interlude with its gorgeous guitar picking, not to mention Shaw's astonishing vocals (he pops up to a high F at the end). I love it.
I’ve always been in awe of Tommy. I’ve seen Styx a few times and they’re always amazing and I lose my voice singing with them, but, I got choked up watching the amazing young musicians getting into a song that was written before they were born! The choir! The lead violinist, and the young lady flutist singing along while waiting for her part!!

The girl in the woodwind section who was obviously a fan made me smile. Tommy and Styx were never frightened of letting the music speak for itself, acoustic instruments and a powerful voice.
