5 MONTH RENOVATION 10sqm/110sqft to a flexible space

  • This is the start to finish renovation of my tiny Library / Dining / Study / Work / Guest bedroom. (Story 78) I'm living small, so I bestowed a number of active functions unto this room, being clever with design and built in units so the space is organised and every square inch has a function. This room is for activity, the living room (which I'm currently renovating) is for downtime. The total house is 45sqm/485sqft and I've been renovating it on my own the past few years.
For more information on these builds, there are many videos (Story 57-74) about the entire process that started Summer 2023. This video is a slightly condensed version, or it would be much too long :)
I thought it would be interesting to have the entire room build in just the one overview video, so here it is!
    In this video:
    00:00 Intro & design plans
    01:06 Preparations
02:09 Library framework & doorway nooks
    09:32 Library
    19:06 Desk
    23:39 Banquette / bed
    38:00 Art wall
    42:38 Side table

@@wildrosieRosie, your mathematics and design skills would make any seasoned carpenter green with envy! You know, once you finish your house, there’s no doubt you could make a fortune making custom designed upmarket unique furniture pieces, and it’s not just the joinery skills you’ve acquired, it’s also your elegant and simple taste. Bravo!

Rosie - i have to admit something: I am 50 years old, and have been DIYing things since teenage years. When i started following you, I found it so refreshing because even if you did not have all the skills, you had the courage to start building things and renovating. I felt at some times when watching your stuff "oh, she is doing this in an odd way" or "I would have done that differently". Still, your attitude towards the renovating and your courage and the cute things you built gave ME enthusiasm and energy to start doing more things around my house. (so i built some furniture and started carving spoons, cups etc). And then the thing I have to admit: you have become so good in the last two years! What I think right now: "OMG she knows so much more than me". I do not know if you realize yourself how much you have learned. Ok - confession over. I wanted to tell you that you should feel so proud about all that you have achieved.

Rosie….when you laid on your bed, turned to the camera and said, “This is amazing “…I actually cried. I’m a 71 year old American woman who recently built my own tiny house with the help of my son. I’ve watched your journey with amazement. Your attention to detail, your patience in coaxing stubborn timbers into place, and the joy and love you’ve put into your home has been an absolute joy to watch!! Thank you Rosie! Thank you! Congratulations! Your home is beautiful!

    • @janinedevilliers510

Yes. An "I can do attitude" is the key to everything.
They should remove the word can't from the dictionary. 😂
I have an aunt who has an "I can't" mindset.
When I watch Rosie, I think of my aunt. If she watched Rosie she would learn alot.
We don't come out of our mum's knowing everything.
      It is learning by doing.
If it doesn't work, try something different until it does work.
That is the beauty of our super creative minds. We have an endless supply of imagination and creativity. Some people are creative with numbers, othets music, art, etc.
If people didn't think of inventions and try making them, then nothing would have been made.
What a boring world. And if everyone made everything exactly the same way, that would look boring. 😂
Rosie is an inspiration for many reasons. 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Rosie, I think knotty pine works absolutely beautifully in your space - better, even, than the more sophisticated materials you yearned for. The simplicity, ordinariness and humility of the wood reflects your small, old, batten-and-board cottage in the woods perfectly. I'm sure you have lots and lots of pine trees around you! All those knots add an element of kitsch to your otherwise restrained, minimalist aesthetic, which introduces some warmth and playfulness to an otherwise rather austere and serious look. And how many designs to you see these days that intentionally use knotty pine - very, very few. If you'd used, say, birch, or something else you'd gravitate to, you might have ended up with something that looks very similar to lots of other spaces. Yours is unique, which is a lot better.

Based on how all your cuts turned out, you could definitely learn some traditional timberframing and furniture joints to make furniture without any screws or nails. Great work, truly.

I just love how you show us that renovation is not just a matter of having it done overnight. The process has it's ups and downs, and you sometimes have do with plan B. The need to renovate rather than "just" tearing down and build anew might very well be necessary in times to come.

I just returned from 6 days camping in the woods. I wanted to be as far from any city that I could and still be in the path of totality for an eclipse that passed over North America Monday. I had to bring my laptop just in case I needed it. I work in IT for a global company. I didn't have to turn it on all week! Yours was the first voice I looked for when I had to turn it back on for work.
