@@madametrafficjam8347 I don't mind people who are living a frugal life are earning a lot more than they want to spend. The best economical buffer is to have so much money that can live for 6 months without any income. Note: Very frugal, not luxuriously.
There may be a time where one really need money. It could e.g. be to become unemployed and then get a job some time later.
Another *very* unpleasant one is you managed to get out out of your burning house alive, but what are you going to do next.

Some thoughts: first off, you have beautiful hair and your new haircut is adorable! I get what you are saying about higher taxes vs. how many services benefit us, but in the last few years, I’ve come to look at that differently. My taxes are paying for benefits that I don’t receive, but the idea that as a community, we can all have enough food, safe shelter, access to health care and the ability to get an education or training, benefits all of us, by hopefully, reducing crime, mental illness and all the problems that arise from chronic poverty. I realize that no country in the world is doing this perfectly, but many countries are trying harder to make it a goal to ensure their citizens have basic needs met. I never used to look at it this way, but I’ve come to see that I feel better, thinking that we, as developed societies, are trying to make life less desperate for those who have true needs. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos immensely. 🌿

I think one fact a lot of people forget is that anyone can end up unemployed, sick or homeless if enough bad things happen. I'd rather pay for others (which I can only do when I'm better off myself) than not being able to receive any help myself should I ever need it. It's funny how many people seem to forget that the government doesn't just magically have money to pay for roads, hospitals, schools etc., if you want great infrastructure you need to help pay for it.

Thank you so much for your honesty. UA-cam happened to suggest your video during this exact moment of me in tears in my off grid cabin my husband and I built by hand. It’s been a year, a cold Maine winter, and we’ve spent the past two days tearing apart the house battling carpenter ants (found the nest, all is well). You can plug all holes and fill it with argon (a noble gas), it's heavier than air to it will sink to lowest void it can't get out of.
Insects will of course die if they don't get oxygen, so that could be a good way of killing every one of them without using insecticides (poison against insects).
You would need to plug all holes. A pine tar, cement, and 7% water mix is good for doing that. It becomes a ceramic once it had solidified. You you can easily chip it off, if you later want to plug it using something else.

In the first place I (a single woman in Switzerland in a similar situation of life like you) also planned to buy and renovate an inexpensive Swedish house in the woods (and do lots of Nordic-Ice-Skating in the Winter :) but now I fell in love with the idea of building a cool tiny-house on a ponton-float in Sweden- with no experience - by myself. :)
Courage is the first step, right? All following steps for a project will come by themself and you can process them one by the other. :)

    • @Lupupu
      @Lupupu 2 роки тому +36

Just do some research on how the pontoon floats will survive the Winter and the water freezing (and the weight of the snow on the house). The water by our Summer cottage freezes every Winter (in Finland) and we have to drag the dock on land before Winter every year. There are some pontoons that can withstand the ice, but most people have to take their docks out of the water before Winter. The ice is very powerful and it can break many things, and even move big rocks under the water.

All inland lakes freezes in the winter, so you might be better off with a tiny house on wheels. And, you need to have an agreement with the landowner, if they will let you moor your houseboat on their land.

@@ibislife thank you for your thoughts and comment. I will search for good, frost save models of pontoons - and will enjoy all the frozen lakes, to hop on my ice skates after coffee on my little terrace in the morning. And come back in the evening to hop in my micro Sauna/bastu. :) On wheels there are restrictions in weight and size: 3x5m (+1.5m terrace on two sides) are so much more spacey than the 2.55x6m you are allowed on build a regular trailer. I opt for a spot at a (not too fancy and pricy) Marina outside Stockholm where my tiny house boat could stay during the whole year long. Or easily swim-drive somewhere else. ;)

They are very real and normal, nothing fake or dramatic, which is very nice 😊 Sometimes we think about Sweden, a little cabin in the woods with no people in the surroundings sounds great to us. We now live in the countryside of the Czech republic on a former farmstead, quite a frugal life like you. But there are still neighbors... What people who did not make a move like you did often miss, is that once you change your way of living and your surroundings so drastically, spending less does actually not feel like a big deal, it does not feel like a major sacrifice. There are so many other things you can enjoy in a close-to-nature environment while some negative factors from your former urban and social environment disappear. A lot of luxury consumption in the western world is just compensation for fundamental flaws in how we treat our bodies and souls in our "modern" lifestyle. Of course you still spend money, but you spend it more on practical things such as building materials and functional clothing that will keep you warm and last.
My spending patterns have turned upside down since I moved to northern Sweden 7 years ago, and it feels great :-)

I live in Jämtland and work as an electrician and I'm often doing it for people. The avgift that you pay for your supply here is very expensive and downgrading can save you thousands a year. It's a very simple thing to do aswell, it just means changing your main fuses for smaller ones. The way you live, I should think you could easily be on a small supply.

No the voltage stays the same, it basically means the size of your main fuses. The main fuses will be located wherever your electricity meter is. From what you've said though, it does sound like you may already have a smaller supply. Probably easiest to phone your electricity supplier and see what size you are paying for and if it's possible to downgrade it.

Quite a challenge but yes, you can do it :) I have quit my 6 digits job in November, bought a farm, starting a homestead and I have no experience! Learning from UA-cam, things that fits with my style and goals. The beauty of that is being able to make revenues from home as freelancer. I sell digitals on Etsy for junk journals (a bit like scrapbooking) and I count on that to get some revenues. When we have no depts, it is totally viable as lifestyle. The worst that can happen is to have to find a local job for few hours per week. I work tons of hours every day but it doesn’t feel like working like when I used to work in the IT industry. My brain doesn’t see it like a work ... my happiness and freedom feeling has never been that high! I don’t regret the move and I guess you feel the same for now. The first 2-3 years will definitively be the worst as we need to build or repair lots of things (buying equipment for the animals in my case) so, it is hard on the budget and energy but then, what a quality of life there will be! I am already happy with this lifestyle so ... it will just be better and better! :)

Some years ago (before Brexit), in Europe there was a big trend, started off by British expats but followed up by many people from other countries and nationalities. They set up a l.t.d. company in the U.K. and thus paid (maybe very little or no?) taxes in England.( Estonia had a very good deal for businesses.) Lots of people started providing their services for to set you up. It was a very simple and quick process. I guess that's your option.
Don't get me wrong, I love the svenska system because it supports lots of roads, schools, healthservices, allowances, communityservices, etc. I also believe it is essential for all, you included. E.g. : If you brake your leg or worse , hospitals will give you good care, an ambulance will come fetch you. Trains ride on time, etc.
Just wait for your taxreturn and see if in your case a simple ltd (online registration) would be better . So you can continue to spend your money in swedish shops & support the society of your new homeland that way.

It was fascinating hearing about your financial responsibilities, and I am going to pray that your UA-cam channel grows rapidly, so you won't have to worry about your bills anymore. After watching half your video this morning, I was so inspired by your spirit for life, that I decided to get out there and build a dry stone wall in my garden that I've been procrastinating over for a year. I worked all day lifting and placing heavy slate slabs without any help and managed to finish the entire project by the evening! All thanks to you!

Totally celebrating what you’ve done so far. A friend once mentioned something that became an important mindset to me : sophisticated simplicity !

Loots of mosquitoes and deer flies during the summer time. But dont let that scare you.. You will need a bug jacket. A lot of Swedish people that live werry far out in the country side, often try to support themselves with hunting and fishing. Fruit trees and gooseberry, redcurrant and blackcurrant. Rubarbs and potatos. Sometimes they dig a pond, to have traut and crayfish too.
Remember too keep at lot of long lasting foods like pasta and rice and canned food. Food prices in small town shops, are also much higher than if you go to a big city and shop. Prices in Denmark are higher than in Sweden. And remember that if you go out on your bike on what they call a high way or a bigger road, where there is no space for a bike. Be werry carefull because the truckdrivers dont give a f.... There are a lot of people that get killed on these roads on bikes or motorbikes. Thats also one of the reasons why you can drive a car at a werry early age in sweden. Sweden also have a lot of Second hand stores with a lot of cheap nice things.

You are so real and it's heart warming. One things that I really love as well which answers one of the concerns I had about starting my own channel was that I see so many DIY YT'ers completing a project every video. You don't. And for me this is more real. When you are newbie like myself it takes so long to get anything long and trying to show it all in one video as if it would be completed in a weekis absurd. Thanks for sharing in a truly authentic way.

It's really very impressive what you have achieved through all these months of renovation, Rosie. I came to Sweden around the same time, but was renting and a month ago I left as I couldn't afford it anymore (living off my savings). Taxes are big in Sweden, that's true, and living similar lifestyle I do get that we may not really want to pay for something we'll most likely never use. That's one of the ways in which for us, single women, life can be hard sometimes. When I was watching you at the beginning I thought to myself: "Maybe I could do that a decade earlier, but not now". These days however, having a deeper realization that my home is where my heart is, I started seriously considering a bus to make a conversion and instead of looking for a house in all the different countires, I can always take my home with me. Living in Nature, in a tiny house ar a yurt has been on my mind for some years now, but never dared to consider doing it myself. Let's see how far I will go with this idea! Nice haircut. I used to cut my hair as well 😃

Thank you lovely lady for sharing all of this with us! I find your journey quite interesting. I have been following you for a while but I usually don't comment. I really applaud everything you are doing to try to stay on the path of an untraditional lifestyle. I know from experience how difficult it is when we don't fit into the cookie cutter role society has deemed for us. I came into young adulthood in the early seventies and was one of the original flower children who lived off the land as best I could in a very simple way. It was difficult and I had two children so that made it almost impossible to get ahead ever! It seems that no matter where you live it's almost impossible the way it's been set up to step out of the system with any kind of comfort unless you are born into wealth. I wish you all the best in your life and will continue to follow you and watch your journey as long as you post. Take care lovely Rosie and sending many blessings to you as you navigate your life and enjoy your cabin in the woods!😘🏡🌲🌲🌳🌲🌲💚

Thank you very much for sharing all that info :)
I especially enjoyed the financial parts of it, and comparing the costs here and there. I don't have anybody here that I can compare similar situations with.
I started out with my house spending all and everything of my money (which was very small sum) on a mortgage. I had decided to spend almost everything in income from my employment every month in addition to my monthly mortgage, in order to buy my self free. The first thing I did was to remove any radiators in the whole house that were not absolutely necessary. That meant a cold kitchen, for one thing. Doing all my laundry by hand all year 'round, not spending anything in excess. I was absolutely dependent on having a car, though to take me to and from work, about 120 km per day. I also have 3.5 km of gravel road, out to the main road where there is a limited bus service. But going by bus with all the connections, was totally ruled out. I would have not had enough hrs in a day to do that. Adding the need of bringing in building materials, groceries, getting enough hrs for sleep while working overtime, etc... would have only brought miseries.
I did all repairs and maintenance on the car, that I was able to by myself, and all the construction work on the house, as well. Since the house was not finished when I bought it. It was built as a summer house, just like yours. But I did have 2-glazed leaky windows with moving curtains on windy days.
My real worry was hoping the job lasted long enough to do the final down payment on that mortgage. When that day came it was a huge relief. And the job situation was going gradually worse as we tried to hang onto the business we were doing. And it did go out of business shortly after. But all the pierces fell more or less exactly into place, and I was a free man. Relatively, anyway.
I have also lived in other countries before this. Such as Canada, the US, and Norway in big cities. One of them was NYC

Wow, I'm impressed with your story. I really like your honesty about remote living, and the work that it really takes.
I started building my homestead about 20yrs ago and I didn’t have much money. For many weeks I would only have enough money to buy a few boards to build with, but the trick is to keep constantly moving forward one step at a time knowing in your mind that it will take a lot of time., but if you enjoy the process, than it’s worth it. I pay about 20-30% in taxes. (U.S.) . 50% taxes is high, I think that may include your healthcare., but it’s still high. Health care is something we have to pay ourselves or employee sponsored. If we are self- payed, it’s about $1000 / month. Does Sweden have much in the way of thrift stores, yard sales, flea markets, car boot sales, places where you can buy used items at a much cheaper price? buying used items, really saved me alot of money over the years.
I’m sure you have thought about starting a garden to save money on your food bill. A small green house would significantly increase your growing season and allow you to have fresh green vegs into the cooler months.
I look forward to watching you journey. Best of luck on all your future endeavors.

Frank, this is a definite benefit of living in Canada. Americans seem to be afraid that free health care is "socialism" but it is about taking care of your people, reducing stress, and thereby reducing crime and mental illness, all of which affect communities. I had to have surgery last year and was in hospital for over 3 weeks. Didn't cost me a dime. I didn't have to worry about anything other than getting well. How many Americans can afford health insurance? Scary!

@@janinafisher101 Health care services in Canada really depend on where you live. I live in Eastern Ontario and we don't have many doctors, Emergency room waits can be up to 10 hours if they are not closed, due to a staff shortage. Not sure about surgery I'm assuming it could take months to see a specialist and year or so for surgery. Been 5 years since I've had a family doctor and they don't try to find you one anymore. We just have to live with it in spit of paying our taxes just like everyone else. Healthcare in Canada is nothing to brag about if you don't live in a large city.

@krisskross8985 I'm in rural Eastern Ontario as well, northwest of Perth. I have definitely noticed a decline since Doug Ford came into office, especially since Covid. We may have a long wait in Emerg, but I have a friend in the US whose child had pneumonia and she couldn't afford to go to Emerg! We Canadians often do not take care of our bodies, and our health care system design is very costly - not a good combination. We need to fight for it, and keep it public.
