I’ve been watching every video I can of this camera. I’ve been using the same camera equipment since I was 9-10yr, I’m 23 now. I’m hoping one day I’ll be able to upgrade, especially my lenses they’re literally falling apart. Really appreciate this video! ❤ feel like a kid watching a video of a toy they want 😅
Thank you. In addition to recommending settings, I am grateful that you gave a short explanation of WHY that choice was preferable. I will have to listen a FEW times to follow, but your descriptions are clear.
I am a R5 bird shooter (or other nature) living in the Netherlands and I do think these settings are a very good startpoint for me with important set-up choices for trying and using my R5 markII! Thank you for this thorough explanation!!
I have watched several wildlife setting videos and your's is very good. I like to see the ways people customize the buttons and you clearly explain why and use real examples e.g. bison auto focus hunting vs spot. You speak slowly and clearly. Your triple BBF is complex but you explained it well. Your Kati and Y stone workshops are of interest to me. I felt that your energy level dropped low if too long a recording session so keep in mind not to record for too long. I look forward to more videos with the new camera.
Many many thank yous! I use DOF front button for crop mode. You shoot large mammals; I shoot small birds. Extra reach and filling the frames helps with eye focus.
Very good video. I spent hours the other day trying to figure this out and didn't realize that under the AF-On Button AF menu, after hitting "INFO," you could turn off whole area tracking with the top wheel to select it. One subtle point is that if you have "unlocked" spot area focusing, then if the focusing cursor gets "near" an eye, the focus will jump to the eye. If you want dead simple spot focusing, you must also have it "locked." Most of the time it won't make if there is nothing the camera thinks is an eye near the spot focus spot.
This is a very informative video ! For amateurs I think it would enhance the content if you included a picture to show how the settings make a difference in the image. 😊a pic is more than 1000 words
Thanks for a great video. I will be using this to get outside much quicker when my R5ii shows up. I look forward to an even more useful triple back button set up as well as taking advantage of the speed boost and eye control on off custome setups you covered. Cheers!
Great video! Mine just got delivered today while at work and I'm excited to check it out when I go home. I set up my cameras very similar for family documentary photography but I've been overlooking the info button in the custom button setup.
This setup is awesome for wildlife and sports photography! What advice do you have for having a quick option to revert over to landscape shooting? In those cases I'd prefer to keep the back button focusing setup but also have the option to have quick access to single frame shooting and single point focus without continuous shooting or continuous focus? I tried setting my shutter speed to one shot using the Q/Quick menu, but using back button focusing it reverts back to high speed shooting. I shoot wildlife 80% of the time but welcome your advice on how to best accommodate the 20% of landscape shooting so I don't take 15 frames a second of a tree!
I expect I am wrong but I didn't think spot detection was the same as Spot AF. It was introduced for motor sport so if the drivers eyes were hidden it would lock on to the helmet,.Surely the way you have the AE button set up you are still using the Spot AF area with tracking rather than the padlocked Spot AF which has no tracking.
Thanks for the great video - I've been looking for one that addresses incorporating eye-control into a back button autofocus system. One option I was wondering about is the "confirm eye control" (which can be assigned to the joystick press) and how it differs from the "move AF point / start AF by eye control" option that you used. Do you have any insight into that and how it would be used similarly or differently? For a future video, I'd love to see how your back button system plays out in various situations. Thanks.
I noticed 8K was not available on your screen, but it was on mine. Is there some other setting you selected that disabled that that could be important?
@ 4:44 what is this Blackout y'all keep referring to? and why do I need a Blackout free display? I am still fairly new at this (really started w/ an R7) and not sure what this is? Does it only affect when shooting RAW files (I only do JPG because I don't want to mess w/ post processing or color grading) Thanks!
At 5:20 when discussing the AF operation, it helps to know that a lens must be attached. Otherwise, the only option available is manual. Moving from an older canon model, this was not obvious to me.
At 21:33 you mention dialing in 1/250th of a second in the exposure controls. Is this the default (or starting point) when switching from photo to video. I have not shot video from a camera and I cannot find the setting for exposure control for the customize set up. Did you set the exposure while in the customization video settings from the orange exposure menu with sub menu 2 - exposure?
I'm not the video creator but he selected 1/250 for the shutter speed because he is using a 120fps frame rate. It is typical to use double the frame rate for the shutter speed. If you were shooting at 30fps then 1/60 would be the typical shutter speed. Another thing he skipped by is that if you don't switch the camera into video mode but instead use the small video record button to start recording then the camera is programmed to use the settings saved in video C3.
@@ericmcleod7825 Thank you for your reply. I still need the how to do it part of the question answered. If I go into the orange exposure menu with sub menu 2, I see the set shutter speed range option. I can change the mech shutter to electronic, but don't see how to set the speed to 1/250. I assume I'm close to where I need to be, but any help along this line would be helpful.
@@janlajoie6120 You select 1/250th of a second in your exposure controls, not in the menu system. You’ll want to be sure you are in Manual mode (rather than Auto, Aperture, Shutter, etc.) and you select 1/250 in your shutter speed just as you would if you were doing photography. This then gets programmed into C3 as I explain in the video. C3 is then what the camera defaults to when pressing the red record button.
Thanks for the video! Especially the speed boost function. I thought that was not included on the R52. I got lost on the video mode to save to C3. I could not find a way to set the exposure controls. I think you set it to 1/240 for your 120p recording. I want to set mine to 1/60 for 30p and 4kfine. I could see no way to do it. It seemed to be locked at 1/30. Also, I could not set the aperture either. I could set exposure comp, though. Any ideas? Again, thanks for your assistance on this!
@@lamatrake.2883 If you have only an SD card, or if you have video set to record to SD and you have both CFExpress and SD card, I think it won't appear (edit: I think I was wrong about that, but there are SD card type requirements). An issue on the R5 (maybe also this camera) has to do with digital IS. Try toggling that to see if it makes a difference. Canon seems to sometimes inform why a feature is missing but sometimes not. That is frustrating. If you set the camera to PAL instead of NTSC, 100 fps is available rather than 119.88 (p. 1188 of the manual). Check the end of the manual. There are tables showing which combinations are possible with various configurations and cards.
