  • Excerpt from Andrew Gold's interview with Mike Botts (Bread). Mike was his drummer and good friend. Andrew talks about how "Lonely Boy" developed - the recording of the song and so on during the tour with Linda Ronstadt. They would get standing ovations before it was even released! You know you have something good when that happens. "Lonely Boy" -
    Andrew's band: Waddy Wachtel (Guitar), Brock Walsh (keyboards), Dan Dugmore (Guitar), Kenny Edwards (Bass) and Linda Ronstadt (background vocals)
    Thank you to Michele Botts who gave us the interview. The interview was recorded in 2001 in Woodland Hills, CA.

    This is perfection. Songwriting. Musicianship. Production. It is a perfectly crafted and produced song. A true legacy for Andrew Gold and Mike Botts and their band. A tribute as well to the legendary Linda Ronstadt for cultivating such talent.

    I was ten years old when I bought the single of this song in the summer of '77. I thought it was such a wonderful sounding song and I loved playing it over and over. But as an adult, I realize that for a fast and great sounding song, it's an utterly sad and hopeless kind of song. That boy who was lonely in the song was such because he'd been taught to be nobody's fool; that is, if you don't take risks, follow your heart, you don't have to worry about being anyone's fool, but you basically have guaranteed yourself loneliness. Now, as a 10 year old boy that I was, I didn't realize how I was basically whistling past the grave by enjoying the song!!! I was already in fear of things badly, had undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome, which only intensified my fears....I was already putting up walls toward people like my classmates out of fear of being rejected (trying to protect myself from being nobody's fool), so when a year later, when I really fell in love with a girl, I was off to the races of being that "lonely boy" throughout my adolescent/teen years trying to run away from any risk taking/following my heart, and the consequences were devastating...something that would take years to try to right the ship. I used to say, "Why God, did you not guide me then when I was so messed up and save me from myself?" But as I've gotten older, I can say this: God's messages were always there, especially if you look at late 70s pop music, so many great messages on life and dealing with it BUT BUT BUT...one has to be ready to hear the messages and act upon them. I wasn't. All I can do now is strive to, as I have been for many years, follow my heart and that means I have to risk being a "fool" sometimes in the world.

    • @1101grayzer
      @1101grayzer 2 роки тому +1

      We all have to learn that to risk being a fool is a) worth it and b) essential. We are only a fool in someone else's eyes. And if anyone else thinks we're a fool, that is their issue. Not ours. So, do not worry, ever, about being a fool if you are doing something you want or need and if it is something important to you. We cannot control how others react to us. The ones who are worth it will see us for who we really are. Take care, smile, live your life.

      Being nobody's fool... that's that weird pride junk that has been around forever and continues to be taught to the youth of today.
      Oh no.. someone thinks your an idiot, or your stupid, or your not cool. You better go do something about it. They have disrespected you.
      If you can't figure out on your own that you've done something dumb then nothing others tell you is likely to fix that. That means your ignorant to your own mistakes and good luck fixing that.
      If you think being disrespected is a capital offense that requires retribution... then there's going to be weird violence forever all because someone's pride took a hit. Poor little you.
      I think the song writer is trying to say teaching our youth to feel that way just continues a never ending cycle and that not much good comes from it.

    I always thought this song was about my brother, except that he was born in '53 and I was '60. They took him to judo because he was picked on a lot. I always thought the lyrics were "we'll teach him to fight." My dad was not very nice to him when he was young. He's never really had many friends...I can only count 4 and I pray there were more. And when I was born, I was very sick and screamed all the time. He always has been the lonely boy.

A concise and emotionally powerful story - a beautiful set of voices, anticipatory percussion, soaring guitar parts, full of anticipation with dramatically spaced crescendos in the concluding stanzas. • @lynnturman8157
      @lynnturman8157 7 років тому +4

      okay...I think I finally figured it out. The verse is in 4/4 but all the upbeats are accented. The first piano chord is the AND of 4. Then going into the bridge (which is also in 4/4 and where we can finally establish the beat) they drop a beat. So the last measure going into the bridge is in 3/4. Simple, right? NOT!!!

    • @ajtheown
      @ajtheown 6 років тому

      @@lynnturman8157 I think the first piano chord is on the and of 1, which would put the whole song in 4/4. It is a really funky feel though, good stuff!

    I have only recently started hearing this song on the radio . It is amazing in so many ways. It makes me think of all those poor parents, that can't do right for wrong. Although the boy had a good sounding, upbringing, he was still lonely with a capital L. It also appears to be from the lonely boy's perspective where he dose appreciate what his parents did for him. Yet still cant help feeling Lonely. Great song, right up there with any Macca song.

    • @frazzleface753
      @frazzleface753 5 років тому +2

      If you're talking about the very first version that Andrew is talking about here that was much slower and reflective, I don't think that was ever recorded.
      The original version they recorded is available on the Collectors' Choice release of What's Wrong with This Picture?, that Andrew put together c.2005, together with some other extra tracks. (It is on UA-cam, so you can listen for yourself, but in case it gets taken down): -
      It's not hugely different from the eventual released version of Lonely Boy - Andrew's vocal is a little less polished, the vocal overdubs are missing, most noticeable on 'she's so much younger than you...' and 'Woah Woah Woah...' near the end, the guitar solo is mildly different, the percussion is reworked somewhat and extra strings are added. Perhaps the biggest difference is the high vocal note at the end is missing, achieved on the final version by slowing the tape down as it was out of Andrew's natural singing range :) Producer Peter Asher added these elements, and I think the final version benefits quite a bit as a result.

    Andrew Gold managed to take a song like When Will I Be Loved more catchy than one would think possible, whilst making it sophisticated, all based on a very basic chord progression. He was a master craftsman. I'm always happy to be a German-American when I learn about people like him. Not because of any feeling of racisms (I've dated all kinds of people) but just to possibly be from the place that brought Andrew Gold into existence!

    Lonely Boy kind of reminds me of Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon. I really like both singers and both songs. If you don't know Wax, Andrew's band with Graham Gouldman, check it out. Also Bryndle with Andrew, Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldman, and Kenny Edwards is also great. Too many wonderful singers died too young.

      Exactly! I always thought Lonely Boy reminded me of Excitable Boy!

    In Linda's book, she gave him a sentence. What is with that???

      Linda is overrated as a musician. Andrew Gold was so much better!

    I'm sorry. When this song was new I tried hard to figure it out, no luck. Thought of it the other day, found a lyrics version video, had a listen, and it still makes no sense to me. A jealous 2 year old? That's all I get out of this lyrics wise. It is good music to be sure.

    Can anyone name who the people are in the picture that runs through virtually all of the song? Who is the guy that looks like McCartney on the far right?

      +Andrew Gold you misunderstood me. I am talking about the picture over the song at the end.

      The great picture from Japan (a tour) is Andrew with the Cretones and Waddy. If you look up the Cretones you can ID who you are asking about.

    Oh, those stomach churning chord progressions in the riff ! Takes alot to surprise me.... but that chord progression did.... still does. 40 years later.
    If only more pop artists actually understood harmony.... progressions.... modulations and the power of sequence... sigh.
