Steely Dan. As a kid hearing them on the radio, I found them incredibly boring. It took till I was in my 40s to "rediscover" them and give all their albums a listen. I'm not sure what triggered it - I think it was from hearing "My Old School" on the radio and realizing that I really liked it. I ended up loving and appreciating Steely Dan, and now I listen to them all the time. Their album Aja is an absolute masterpiece!

When it’s on you get a mild grin on your face remembering the end of the Goodbye Girl or feeling like your soul has been excised from your chest over a breakup or loss of someone you loved. Bread are the quintessential representation of the mellow yet soothing and soul healing musical balm acts of the 70s. Bands like America, Firefall, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Seals and Crofts, LRB, Poco, as well as the unforgettable John Denver came under that seemingly dubious banner of 'guilty pleasures'. All these years later they all still hold a special place in my personal musical pantheon.

Well, I was born in'59 to parents both in their mid 40's (44 & 46), so their music was Perry Como, Jim Reeves, Glen Miller, Lawrence Welk, Andy Williams and grew into The Carpenters and Glen Campbell in the 60's & 70's. My taste going into my teens in the 70's was more Eagles, Journey, BTO and Bob Seger, but always had a love for the crooning of Jim Reeves. I still put on a CD remix of Ole Gentleman Jim from time to time... Yes, I bought the one album as an homage to my parents belting out 'I Fall to Pieces' or dancing to 'He'll Have to Go' in our living room while I rolled my eyes. Thanks for this. It reminds me of my love of soft, melodic tunes that my parents passed on... Yes, I love Bread and have since the 70's! :)

With my limited funds I picked up two tapes from the clearout sale section of my local music shop. I picked two artists I'd never heard of in hopes of finding one good song between tham. I went home with Cosmo's Factory and The Best of Bread. I can't even remember the bitch now, but I remember thinking the guy who wote Aubrey knew my pain! Good Bye Girl is such an amazing song. I was lucky enough to be the youngest of 9 and with that, I NEVER got to choose the songs we listened to. Looking back, I wouldn't trade that in for the world! Most of my friends were the the oldest or second oldest in their families, so they didn't have the benefit of growing up knowing Santana, The Beatles, Jim Croce, Grand Funk Railroad, Tower of Power, War, America, The Bee Gees (prior to their disco fame)...etc. In 8th grade I mentioned to my Jr. High Choir teach that I wanted us to sing "These Dreams" by Jim Croce...she asked "How the heck do you know about Jim Croce?" I started naming all the songs I knew and she was quite impressed, for the next 2 years, she would order sheet music and lyrics (so I could learn them) and we would talk about music and the groups I grew up listening to. Even though I never told her, I was grateful to Ms. Hill and how she helped feed my love of music, but especially my brothers and sisters who helped create it! "It Don't Matter to Me" is also a great song, the telling of the poem, "If you love someone set them free", with the end result, "It don't matter to me if your searching brings you back together with me, cause there will always be an empty room waiting for you, an open heart waiting for you, time is on my side." My stepfather is one of those. He let my mother go after about a year, and she dated several other people. Three years later, she returned, and they've been married now 37 years.

      Suite: Clouds, Rain
See the clouds adrift so far below
Ever changing as they come and go
Makes me wonder why I'm up so high
When really I am down so low
Of all the wonders I was one allowed
I think that I would always choose a cloud
Always brings my feelings right out loud
      Whether I'm ashamed or proud
And on this airplane comin' home to you
Sometimes I think I've flown my whole life through
      My whole life...through
As I wing my way to you
See the clouds they're giving life below
In colors that the canvas cannot show
Keeping secrets no one else could know
For I'm the one who told them so
Now and then I get up close to you
I'd like to stay but I'm just passing through
So I'll have to say goodbye
      Until next time I fly
      Make my bed-light the light
Comin' in on the midnight flight
Touch the ground and soon you will be
      Safe inside reality
      Change your mind-change your name
Still the music it sounds the same
Rainfall don't bother me at all
You see the world reflected in the highway
Come on rainbow, I can't let you go
Before I reach the end of you someway
So the next time raindrops fall
If it makes you climb the walls just think of me.

"Down On My Knees" was sang by Bread's other lead vocalist James Griffin (RIP). However, David Gates wrote it with him. I think Griffin's ballad's like "Too Much Love", "Look What you've Done" and a couple others demonstrate he had ballads that were as good as a portion of David Gates's ballads. Gates had a little more of the hard rock thing going over Griffin with "Mother Freedom" and "Let Your Love Go".

Back in the '80s and early '90's , my girlfriend at the time and I were building our vinyl collection. We would go through all the records at every thrift store and flea market we could find.
Bread became a running joke with us. The Best of Bread was always in the boxes and milk crates. After a while, we decided to get a couple of Bread albums as a gag. We played them and, sure enough, we were playing them over and over.

When my friends and I were in HS in the 70’, we also dismissed Bread as “chick music” and not cool enough for us. Now, when I listen to their music (especially Guitar Man) I can appreciate David Gates song writing genius.

A group, then a genre. First, very similar experience with my musical parents and me sometimes clashing over taste
The group was the carpenters. I’ve grown to love Karen’s voice and the groups arrangements
The genre is classical music. (With an honorable mention to Bluegrass)
I’ve learned good music is good music :-)

I am so sorry for your loss. I was 18 in 1978 and had just got my second car a 1971 Challenger. One day I reached under the seat and pulled out an old 8 track, lo and behold it was the best of Bread, I had never heard them so I popped it in and man did it resonate. If, a picture paints a thousand words then why can't I paint you started playing and I played the whole album, every song was great. I was Hooked!

When I was a freshman in college, I got tickets to a Bread concert. I really liked their music but questioned how good they'd be, that a full concert of their music would be too much. It shocked me that I absolutely loved the concert, it has to be one of the best I ever attended. First, they sounded great -- David Gates sang as well in concert as he sounds on his albums, just an amazing voice. Next, they sang a surprising number of up tempo songs, songs like "Mother Freedom," and spaced them perfectly. It was an amazing night and my date, who was not excited by going to a Bread concert, ended up loving the concert, too, as well as falling in love with Bread.

Thank you for sharing your story. Sending you big virtual hugs. I really enjoy your deep dives into music. I’m a late bloomer to the group Bread. I had heard their songs at some point in time back in the 70’s. As time passed, their songs would come on playing in the background somewhere like a grocery store not knowing who they were. It wasn’t until I got older that I learned to really appreciate music on another level. I have most of their songs stored on one of my playlists. When I hear music like theirs, it dawns on me that real true gifted music is something that is a rarity in today’s world. And I become more appreciative of the fact that I lived during the time when some of the best songs and music were ever created. Again, thank you so much for sharing such a personal story with us. It’s okay for our parents to tell us they “told us so”. I share your sentiment when you said, “I’d give anything…”. Because in all honesty, I would too. 🙏🏼❤️

I have always loved Bread. Great band. The band I hated was Steely Dan, until I got into their deep tracks and now they are my favorite band. The band I still can't stand is Rush. Honestly, I found Triumph from your previous video and I honestly think they did the trio better than Rush (and this is coming from someone who thinks Neal Peart was the greatest drummer ever). Love me some Bread though, and that strange look my wife gets me when I get excited when they come on.

Even when I was younger, I came to this same conclusion about these bands.
Bread is timeless good music and lyrics. Steely Dan is music genius - Aja is one of the great albums ever done (“Black Cow” is one of the greatest songs ever produced to my ears).
Rush…I’ll never get this one. I just don’t get it - I love most of the popular 70s rock bands but if I never hear a Rush tune I’ll be fine. Geddy Lee’s voice is the equivalent of nails clawing down a chalkboard - it is no nasally and whiny that I just can’t get beyond it. Uuggghhhhh….

I almost gave up on Metallica when they released the "black" album but then a buddy of mine convinced me to listen to the whole album from start to finish and no skipping songs. So I listened to it from start to finish and it's not that bad of an album compared to their prior albums but when "Load" came out I became even more suspicious but I bought it anyways. That's when I lost all faith in a sellout band that everyone else seems to be hardcore fans of to this day.

My dad only liked classical and my mom liked Perry Como and Andy Williams, so I never heard any modern, popular music until I was 12 years old. In 1972, I got my hands on an AM radio, and I discovered Bread. Bread was my gateway into modern music. I absolutely loved David Gate’s voice, and I bought all their albums. Because of Bread, I discovered other artists like the Carpenters, Simon and Garfunkel, The Bee Gees, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, then later Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the list goes on. So, Bread has a special place in my memory.

My cousin sat me down and made me listen to one of their albums, I don't remember which one, I only know that I loved it! My dad died in 2007 and like you, Everything I Own, has a special place in my heart. Adam, you need to listen closely to the song because near the end, you can hear David's voice crack a little with emotion, almost like he's going to cry. What a beautiful, true felt emotion that is impossible to imitate. Love your work, Adam!!! Go Cougs!!!

You talk about songs I'm prety sure I don't care about, and I have to say, I stick around beause the details you provide as a background to the songs I grew up with makes these bands fascinating. It's a wonder we have any music at all, what with producers milking every last bit of talent out of band members (sometimes not paying them much at all), drama within the band itself, and all the rest. And somehow, through fate or luck, we get some music that is absolutely amazing. Like you, I'm pretty sure I wrote off Bread as a sappy band. Let's see if I appreciate them at my age now. Convince me, Professor of Rock! P.S. Thanks for sharing with us your dad. I can feel the love. I'm truly sorry for your loss!

I was introduced to this band by finding a cassette tape in a box at my new step dad's house in 2008. I was 14 years old and instantly fell in love with them. I dreamed about getting my license and having a special person sitting next to me while listening to this great music. Things have changed since then, I mean I did get into my first accident while listening to 'everything I own', by them. They really changed music for me all together since I never felt such a connection before with any type of music. I came from a very sheltered home without internet access radio etc. The only downside is at times it kind of made me feel like my music tastes sucked since there wasn't a lot of people willing to take the chance and just listen to the album. But them, Led Zeppelin and Third Eye Blind are my got to. Bread will always have the biggest place in my heart.
