Hey GlamFam! In this video I am showing you how to cornrow for beginners, I break down the basics of underhand braiding, how to cornrow, the difference between cornrows and dutch braids, and how to part hair for cornrows. Throughout the video I also share time saving tips, and tips on how to prevent traction alopecia. I also included solutions for all the common mistakes I see beginners make, and I even share tips to prevent hand pain and arthritis! I hope that tis video helps! If so, what part was most helpful for you?
I'm a true beginner so this is helpful to me, but I'm going to have to practice, practice, and more practice to get it. 8:48 instruction is really helpful for me with you repeating "under the middle," helps big time. Thanks. I will definitely replay.
@@amb7412 I always tell my students, one of the best things when learning is talking your way through it, it can be a massive help!
@@GetGlamFam Yes, I'm finding it very beneficial for me. This is something that I've always wanted to learn. My mom couldn't do it, so she was unable to teach me. She paid someone who braid too tight and it was the first and last time that it was done. Now I can practice this and do it for myself. Thank you Lindwood. This is empowering.
@@amb7412 I am so happy to hear that the videos are able to be of some help. I hope your braids turn out wonderfully when you try them!
Thank you so much for showing how to part the hair correctly. I have done cornrows on ppl an the braids were always to big or didn't have enuff hair n the back R something but U showing how to do the parts was a big help to me and I'm sure others as well. Thank you for the better understanding. I am a fan. Continue being awesome. 💞😍
I’m here because I’m black and don’t know how to braid 🥴😭
Welcome to the group sis. The struggle continues but u never alone😂

Girrrllll it's okay. Same here. Wats worse is I'm from the island. I'm jamaican and can't swim either 🥲🤣🤣😫. I be trying to practice on my daughter. I'm getting sum wat ok now. Not even decent or good it's still horrible 🤣🤣🤣😫

Thanks for the feedback!
White girl here, trying to learn how to braid my black sister's hair. 👋 Thank you SO much, this seems so much less daunting now than it did a few minutes ago and I'm so excited to give it a try! 😍
Last time I tried to cornrow my daughter's hair, I was grateful she was too young to hate me for what I did to her head... This video is *exactly* what I needed...
😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
😆😆😆😆😆
I feel the same way tonight... my niece is SOOO excited about her braids tonight and keeps saying that she loves them and in just thinking.... I can not let her go out in public like this.... I told her I promise I will get better and she said but they are perfect .... lol
👏👏👏
This video is changing my life! I'm a professional in my mind already 🤣
LOL YASSSS!
Like really 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Right !!!!!
Yessss 👏🏾🤣🤣
Omg 🙌🏼🤣🤣. Same!.. I’m tempted to wake up my son 😂.. if his hair wasn’t braided at the moment ( cause I couldn’t cornrow last night 🤣) I would have definitely been trying it.
Immediately I understood your cornrow method !! I’ve watched tons of tutorials and continued to be confused. I’m learning how to braid my daughter’s hair and I this helped a ton!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thanks for your feedback! I’m so happy the video was helpful!
40 minutes ago, I was challenged to learn to braid by all 4 of my younger sisters, and I have 6 months to go from knowing nothing about hair to being comfortable with braiding so I can 'beat' my sisters in a braiding challenge. I appreciate how clear, concise, and detailed the video is. It's given me the confidence that I can win, in 6 months. This might turn out to be a great skill for me to develop and keep in my back pocket for when I have daughters of my own one day or if my future wife ever wants to get cornrows/braids.
i would like to be updated on the outcome of the comp 😂❗️
Wow 🤩
4 months how's it been
The tip that’s helping me the most is the “left under the middle, right under the middle”
I'm glad it's helping, Thanks!
Yes me too!
Ikr!!! HE is such a great teacher!
Brilliant 👌👌
Agreed! Also, I think I always go over rather than under.
I am trying to learn braiding for a patient of mine at the nursing home that I adore. Being that I am white, and have never braided hair other than a French braid for me or my daughter, I was getting lost with other videos on how it was being done. Your saying left under, right under....I totally understand and can not wait to go back to work to try to fix her hair for her. Thank you!!
I hope it works out beautifully for you! Bless you for learning this for your patient! 💚💚
That is so kind of you. Thank you for being like so many other employees that bring a special touch in their work at nursing homes.😊

Same. Literally everything same!
As a white hairdresser, you have taught me more about textured hair. Than my formal education ever did. Thank you. I want any person who walks into my salon, to be able to get their hair done. your advice on gradually grabbing hair helped a lot. I wish I had a class from you when I was in school 5 years ago.
That's so awesome you want to serve all people. Keep learning.
I love your heart!
I feel the same way!! I am a hair extensionist and also want to serve all people. I am currently in school getting my braiding license and I learned so much in this video!! Amazing work!
I literally thought the same thing about gradually grabbing the hair! Something i should’ve learned a long time ago.
Yes! This is the one. Same! 💪👏
As a 23 yr old mixed person, who was raised by a prominently white family. Thank you for teaching me. I know how to braid, just never learned how to do cornrows properly. 💙
I’m white and I chose to learn all hair types and styles! I’ve always been interested in other cultures. Hopefully your family is watching these videos ❤
What made it click for me was
saying under the middle and grip the outside strand and just focusing on the top of the braid and not underneath. I’ve been trying to learn to cornrow for over 25 years and just couldn’t figure out how my fingers were supposed to be positioned and how much hair to grab. Thank you so so much for taking the time to teach the two different hand positions for starting and finishing the braid and what not to do. This video is pure gold!
I'm a hairdresser and my hubby wants to learn to braid. He just got my mannequin out....I need to pop popcorn. He's so precious.
You've got a great husband trying to learn what you do for a profession I'm glad you've got an amazing partner

The part that helped me the most is when you explained that I don’t need to look at the bottom of the braid and that it’s about finger position when it comes to “adding hair”
Wonderful! Thanks for watching!
yes!!! that helped me too! also, the right under the middle left under the middle .
That’s the part that got me too. I always focus on the bottom and grabbing hair and I’m going to try and trust the process but I have trust issues soooo… this shall be interesting
Yes!!
Yessss! This comment is on point.
I am a over-handed braider. Your tip of talking out loud "under - left - under - right" helped a lot!
Thanks so much for your feedback!
Thank you so much! I was raised by a narcissist mother who absolutely hated me. She taught my sisters this but never taught me. And my sisters refuse to teach me. Thank you for this. God bless you. I’m 36 just now learning how to do this. The world needs more people like you. ❤
I’m sending you some love sister! I hope you are surrounded by people who only treat you best. I named my daughter Penelope. Beautiful name 🤗

You taught me how to cornrow at the age of 28 in 7 mins. Thank you 🙏🏽
Same, I've watched so many videos on how to do cornrows and I did my neatest one yet after one video. It just clicked and made sense, he's amazing 🥰

Wow! I’m trying learn fast like you
I’m 14 and my mom keeps telling me to learn how to do my own hair and this is helping! It might just take a bit to actually master it
Love that for us for real 🥲🥹
I haven’t been able to cornrow for as long as I can remember and just did two perfectly from watching this video :) thank you !
Congratulations! That is so exciting!
3 tips that were super helpful for me. 1: starting small gives the tight look w/o having to pull the hair tight. 2: don’t worry about how much hair you’re picking up. 3: have a wristband to keep your clips on so you don’t have to keep setting them down.
Thank you!
As a white 14 year old who has black family, THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME HOW TO DO THIS! I can finally do my baby cousins hair! I appreciate you sosososo much! You got this!
That's so lovely of you!!
Awww so sweet!
That’s real sweet of you. This comment made my day.
Such a cool response . My nephews and my sisters are mixed . My brother in law is polish welcoke to the family
real im trying to surprise my bf LMAOOO 😭😭😭😭
BABY you just changed my life lol. I’m a black girl who could not braid to the scalp to save her life and I just cornrowed my hair after watching your video. I couldn’t figure out how much hair to add to the braid and you broke it down so perfectly. The part where you said to remember to go under the middle and not worry about the amount of hair is when it clicked for me. My braids look so neat and their not super tight. Thank you so much for this video! 29 years later and I can finally cornrow.
Wasn’t his video the most perfect, detailed video!!?? I’m totally excited about being able to do my daughters hair now!!

Im in the same boat!! I wasnt into hair growing up. But now that i jave a son with all this hair, i have to do something. My sisters do hair. Im willing to learn. This video is very good. Very helpful for a beginner like me. Thank you. Your style and teacher looks like it will start me off in the right direction.
Thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰 My aha moment was when you said not to focus on taking hair but to just focus on going underneath the middle. I finally did a good cornrow without sore fingers. It went down so smoothly.
I'm almost 27 and never learned to braid to the scalp a day in my life. I watched this video, took some deep breaths, and just braided my son's hair for the first time on my own and I'll only get better from here..! 😭 so thankful for this video 😍🙏🏾
Me too! this video helped so much. I'm so happy it came up on google.
I’m 33 and about to braid my daughter’s hair 🥴
Congratulations 🎈🎊🎉 I’m with you. I’m watching this video tryna braid my youngest hair. We got this. Just gotta practice.
Yay I did too he’s the best instructor. Congratulations 🎉
*Updated comment. Guys I really learned to braid my daughter hair from this video. Thanks a million. I always use to practice but stopped but me seeing this video give me the motivation to take a deep breath 😮💨 and try to braid. I even purchased this Manikin head. Not really used it but im going to practice other hairstyles and try some weave styles once I get this braiding down a little more.
you telling me i don’t need to worry about how much hair i pick up relived so much pointless anxiety and the hand positions came thru
Awesome! I’m so glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Omg yes, that's my biggest concern when cornrowing. Which I then overthink and end up grabbing too much. 💜💜 I'm a beginner and learning on my son's hair. That helped me breathe.
YES! Me too! I was trying to get from the left, right, middle. It was not going well. at all.
righttt I overthink too much as well. I'm happy he mentioned that
Literally the best tutorial, that “under the middle” thought process is what made EVERYTHING click for me. I never knew how to cornrow and after watching your video once I cornrowed my daughter’s, my oldest son’s and my husband’s hair. Thank to so much! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
I was clueless how to braid to scalp before my friend showed me and then this video. I’m so thankful I kept looking til I found this! THANK YOU. This was so easy to follow. You are a natural at teaching, please don’t stop doing what you are doing!! 💕 My daughter is going to have beautiful braids now.
The tip that helped me the most is “left under the middle , right under the middle” lol I just sing it every time I begin a braid and it works 🤘🏾😂
I lie to you not…. The song you sang just helped me….. my cornrow ain’t the best looking but I did it……thanks for sharing

After 8 years I was finally able to cornrow my daughters hair... thank you. What helped me understand was the part you said you’ll naturally pick up hair and bringing the side pieces under the middle

I always have issues with grabbing too much hair as I braid - the tip about watching the top of the braid has been SO helpful! I was definitely pulling up from the bottom instead of down from the top and staying flat!
Your way of teaching is absolutely fantastic! It feels like you really take the time to explain the minute details that can come so naturally to experienced stylists. Super helpful and very educational, thank you :)
My aha moment is that I don’t need to focus on grabbing hair it’ll naturally get into the braid. Can you do a video on how to do cornrows on myself?

I used to be able to braid my butt off when I was younger, but since I haven’t done it in so long, I find myself struggling a bit. Your videos are the best I’ve come across. The way you explain things is detailed but very easy to digest and take in. You’re great at what you do - in both doing hair and explaining how to do hair. I can’t thank you enough!
I can’t braid for shit I’m tired of paying people so I’m trying to learn 😭
Same. When I was younger I was so good at it. Thought it was like riding a bike. But here I am relearning. Great video!

The first thing I learned is that I braid over, instead of under. The information on parting, how to go wider in the middle and smaller at the edges. Also the part about not trying to look at the bottom of the braid, and not focusing on picking up hair. This video has been the most helpful that I’ve seen. Thank you so much.
Finally. I learned how to braid from watching your tutorial. I've been attempting for yrs. I've finally done my son's hair. Thank you!
Here to lay my bouquet 💐 I'm truly grateful for this video.
I have watched and attempted cornrows for years on my daughter's hair, I had honestly given up. We tried crochet braids, styling her hair in box braids, that honestly took so long and she was miserable during the process. I recently decided to do crochet braids again, this time trying cornrows and then crocheting her twists in, while I am just learning and know it will take time, this video has been the best instructional video that I have ever watched. Thank you, there may be hope after all ❤️
Thank you so very much! I am so thankful that my video was able to be of help to you!
Ahhhhh! Okay. My Aha Moment was when you said to keep your fingers close to the scalp, close to each other. I have been keeping my fingers farther apart without realizing it, until you said something. You make it look soooo eassyyyy! Gonna keep practicing!
I’m so happy it helped! I hope you see improvement in your braids as well! ❤️❤️

Listen. I've watched a million videos. This made me get it. This is the ONLY video that made me get it. So.. thank you. I can't explain how thorough you were. From beginning to end. My aha moment was understanding where you place the hair with the freshly grabbed hair and what hair to get after.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I’m so happy that the video helped you!

Do you worry about your braids coming out even across the head at this point or could you do the first row on the opposite side and alternate sides? This was a very informative video. Thank you
Thank you so much. You are an excellent instructor. “Under the Middle” is what I said to myself with each strand and before I knew it I had completed a braid!
I watched this video years ago and came back after seeing your GlamFam mannequin head on TikTok. Watching this video in 2024, I love the way you break it down and explain WHY you do certain techniques. I have such a better understanding now.
I’m so glad the video has been helpful to you! Thanks for watching!
The most clear explanation on cornrows I’ve ever watched. I kind of understood the basic concept but you definitely helped me understand my problem (looking under the braid and focusing on grabbing more hair) you’re doing great work out here babes 🥰
The “under the middle” is a game changer for me!! I never understood why my cornrows would start so far back, I get it now. I’m going to braid my daughter’s hair today with this is mind. Thank you!!! 🤗🤗🤗
THANK YOU for this! 😭 My daughter is half black/half Filipino and has such curly hair. I have been researching how to do this so she has a style that stays in during school and soccer. I can do French braids all day, but they only last so long. I'm a big overhand braider. You explaining it in this way just made a breakthrough for me!
This really helped me understand the technical difference between cornrowing and Dutch braiding. You provided a great visual for people trying to learn how to braid using this technique!
Best ever cornrow tutorial I've come across on UA-cam... "under the middle" left and right!!! You're the best teacher 💯💯🥇
This entire video is an "ahh ha!" moment for me! incredible detail given when breaking down grip, parting, underhand braiding, head shape, ETC! I can now braid my 8yr old daughters hair after all these years & now i'll be able to do my 4mo. old's hair! Life changing video, seriously! Thank you...this info is priceless.
I haven't had cornrows in my hair in a long time and usually made larger sections. The smaller sections of 'right under the middle' and 'left under the middle' are a good visual. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you so very much! I appreciate you!
I just ordered my mannequin I already have the stand. Can’t wait to start with your videos. Thank you for sharing and not keeping knowledge to yourself. It helps people like me who do not know how to braid but always wanted to learn. ❤❤❤❤

Thanks so much for watching, I hope the video has helped you increase your skills with cornrowing!
I have adopted sisters who are black and mixed. As a grown white female, I've seen a lot of friends with braids. But never did them myself. I've been working on braiding my sisters' hair lately. This video is amazing! I think the biggest help was to not worry about the hair that you are picking up! Thank you so much for adding to my skills. I'll be watching more of your videos for sure!

I’m trying to learn how to braid my baby boys hair . Very thorough and helpful video
I cannot describe to you how MUCH I LOVE, appreciate & have learned in a short time, from this video! From your amazing guidance on slowing/ rewinding the vid to your comfort level of watching. Your tip on repeating, "left/ right/over the middle" (since I have the EXACT difficulty you mention, having almost ZERO nails but having learned braiding over the top instead of from under, so that was always the technique I used, no matter how much i struggled & inconvenient it would be!) Your parting, demonstrating the width of the scalp, etc... I'm just so grateful that you made such valuable content. I may be Caucasian but my husband is black & I've always wanted to get more consistent w/ his hairstyles, besides just an afro. Costs for hair salons can really add up & since he's an entertainer, I LOVE the idea of getting to change up his styles/designs! Practice, practice, practice is the best way for me to excel but NOW, w/ all of your articulate & helpful techniques & instruction, I believe I'll improve much quicker! ❤ THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!
P.s. now I'm DYYYYNG to get a mannequin head to practice! 😝
I’m currently in a cosmetology program in my high school and this is teaching me a lot more then what they are teaching me . To me cornrowing has always seemed so overwhelming to me and so hard but when you broke down the steps it made me a little more comfortable and confident in learning and doing it ✨✨💙💙
I’m so glad it helped! I actually teach cosmetology at a high school! Thanks for watching!
I have watched so many tutorials and heard so many instructions. However, you are the only one in the past four years of research that actually made it all make sense. Please, keep the videos coming. I would so take your class for all your instruction. You are like the Bob Ross of Hair Design! What a breath of fresh air!
😂😂😂 he really is, u hit the nail on the head 😅
WELL STATED!! Diddo!!
Yours saying “under the middle” helped me visualize what I’m actually doing. I’ve always been able to braid hair, but French braiding has always intimidated me. Thank you for this.
Out of the 50 videos I've watched trying to learn to braid rows I finally ran into this one. You are a great instructor and very easy to learn. Your voice is very calming as well!! Like Bob Ross and his paintings. I love it!!!! You're amazing!!

What helps me get even braids all the way to the nape is to start my first braid in the middle someone taught me that trick years ago. Thank you I’m teaching my 10 yr old how to braid I’m a licensed braider so I love to teach my babies how to do it as well! You are awesome!
You are a good teacher because there’s a difference between teaching and showering off. I appreciate your teaching and attitude towards your audience
Oh my!! I just had that "aahh ha!" moment with the parting of the hair...you are a great teacher.. and for free!! Thanks..blessings
I'm grateful for the wealth of content on here from many people. But this tutorial shows the difference between someone who knows how to do a Cornrow showing us versus an experienced cosmetologist with a gift for teaching. Thank you for all the small tips too along the way. I have 2 young daughters and keen to improve how to braid their hair, thank you ❤️
Goundou
I LOVE WATCHING THESE VIDEOS! HE'S SO DETAILED AND TAKES THE TIME TO SLOWLY SHOW EACH STEP 1 BY 1. GREAT JOB!!!
I can french braid and i found myself going back to that...but when youbsaid just keep saying "under the middle, under the middle" as simple as that sounds.....it made it click!!!! I have watched a bunch of tutorials with no success...but yours was amazing. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your feedback!
I’ve learnt more watching your videos for the last hour than I’ve learnt in 15 years of trying to braid..! Thank you..!
I’m trying to do box braids for the first time and my hands hurt like a mother. Thank you. 🙌🏽❤️😭 Edit: also I’m jealous of your nails.
I'm jealous of his nails too 😍 lol
i’m 33 and can finally cornrow my own hair thanks to you! ❤
That is so exciting! Congratulations!!
Sir you are amazing. My mom and everybody else has tried to teach me how to braid for years and you taught me in a few minutes!!!
This is by far the best tutorial I've seen on how to make cornrows. The "aha" moment for me was when you said "under the middle". Til now I didn't understand that this was the teqnique. Each time I'm doing cornrows I put you on and get better every time . Thank you so much!
I’m 25 and after years of trying your video actually showed me how to braid. I just braided my daughters hair for the first time. Thank you. I’m so happy that I can braid, this video really helped me.
I didn’t know how to braid to save my life and I bought a mannequin head and watched your videos and now I got the corn rolls down packed, I’m excited to do my kids hair now 😂🫶🏼
I've been trying to learn to cornrow and I've watched 10 million tutorials. This is the only video that has helped me. Especially the part about naturally just grabbing the hair as you go. Thank you so much.
