- A Krank Krankenstein amp passed through the shop, so did a quick video. Also a compare of old tubes vs new tubes. Note to self: Put on lapel mic between takes and check audio levels better next time. Cheers! Cos:)
I bought my Krankenstein 10 years ago and haven't looked back. This beast has some serious tone. If you're a gainiac and have an opportunity to pick one up, do it. You won't be disappointed.
These amps have always been intriguing. There’s a practice spot in AZ that rents out rooms and spaces and they have some OG Krank amps as they backline in some of the rooms available. Would be cool to hear your tube swap, mod. Good to see new videos Cos!! Keep it up
Very cool video! Never got to play a Krank in-person, so enjoyed this a lot. Great tones, New tubes all the way!
great video, amp sounds awesome! great playing too, your right hand sounds awesome
10 years ago used this amp for a while and I remember it was very cool🤘
I have a Krankenstein plus. Got new tubes a matched quad. The same tubes that where in it previously, do I need to bias? I love my amp😁
If they are the same brand and rating number then the bias should still be good. Really one of two things can happen if its off 1) they run too cold making the amp possibly feel less responsive a small bit, and will not hurt anything, 2) They run too hot which you can see by glowing red plates in the center of the tube, this is bad and will prematurely wear the tubes out or fail. As these amps get older its not a bad idea to have a tech bias, check filter caps, give a good cleaning of pots, jacks etc. The last thing you want is a failed filter cap and/or tube and have the circuit board burn. You probably cannot get replacement boards anymore.
@@maraudermusic2714 I got the amp years ago without a manual. Do you know what the Krankenstein plus is biased to?
Almost sounds like his tone from the great southern trendkill, maybe reinventing the steel too?
He used solid state randalls for those, he didnt have a deal with Krank until Damageplan.
Can you help me with the tube layout? Are power tube paired 1-4 2-3 or 1-3 2-4? Thanks!
I no longer have the amp here to look at the transformer wiring, no luck looking on line. Most amps of this type are 1-4, 2-3 the jumpering of the output transformer wires make it this way as the best layout. I would assume this amp followed that layout, would not make sense to differ. You can look yourself. As an example of what I mean look at this picture: i.pinimg.com/originals/96/c1/3f/96c13f1a53de5d1214684a4157bf0971.jpg The OT Primaries that are going to Pin 3, see how the pairs are laid out. You should see similar "jumpered" pairs on your amp.
Must be getting rediscovered because these amps are getting harder to find for that kind of price.
I recently found a Krankenstein with matching can for 1700. What a fucking steal.
I have one of these. Nobody seems to want to work on it given it's kind of rare at this point. What else needs to be done when changing tubes? Is that safe to do without any other adjustment.
The bias needs to be set when changing power tubes. You need to find a tech that can do this correctly. Or learn to do it yourself. I used a bias probe kit I got from Tube Depot and then I use a bias chart I got from here: www.tedweber.com/bias-tables/ Think it was about 35mA as Plate voltage was above 475 but under 500.
@@maraudermusic2714 Thanks a million, looking into that now. Love to learn, just haven't dove into tube replacement yet.
I believe thats the original one dime new what he wanted out of in amp i wish i could snag one but here in boston there hard to come across
How Master 1 Master 2 Works on this amp?
Believe there is a channel switching for different volume levels. Look for the manual online. here: all-guidesbox.com/manual/509553/krank-chabk10-operation-user-s-manual-14.html
What speaker cab are you using?
Great questions. This was into a Rivera Load box routed to an HX stomp for IR and reverb/delay. The cab was an Ownhammer Engl IR the JS (Jon from Sonic Drive Studio) mix.
What did you bias it to? Also you’re looking about $1500 used now days. Lol
Don't recall the exact number. I used a bias probe kit I got from Tube Depot and then I use a bias chart I got from here: www.tedweber.com/bias-tables/ Think it was about 35mA as Plate voltage was above 475 but under 500.
New tubes sound better👍👍
Is this straight into the amp? Any boost pedal? Thanks!
Straight into the amp. Thanks for checking it out!
@@maraudermusic2714 thanks, what speaker cab were you using?
these amps are nutty good straight in with the right pickups. I usually put a soft clipper drive in front of it with the drive all the way down to just take out a little low end before going in. It's the best amp I've ever heard with no effects and a quality cabinet. I play mine through a mesa 2x12 with old vintage 30s.
Playing Saxon on a dime amp!!!!
Wonder if they kind of copied it off of a 5150 block letter made some changes
Most power amps are similar in design, the output transformer does color the tone. Most of the pre-amp design is where much shaping can happen. Think Mike Soldono is the grandfather of cascaded high gain amp design and any amp designer has looked at his designs. Since EVH started with Mike post Marshall and then later penned a deal with PV, question who ripped off who? Mike is way too humble and nice to say so, in interviews though you can tell there is "something there". Though an SLO 100 seems to not have the roaring hiss many other high gain amps have, think that is Mike's handywork!
I have the same amp and want to replace my tubes. When I increase the sweep it starts to screech. would changing the tubes fix that?
What kind of tube would I need?
Maybe feedback from too much gain? Noise gate? It solves lots of noise with this amp
So this amp has SOOO Much gain at 1 its like at 5 on most amps. Have a look here: 300guitars.com/articles/preamp-tube-gain-factors-and-substitution-chart/
In V1 try a 12AT7 or a 12AU7
