  • I finally got a chance to check out Dimebag Darrell's amp - the Krank Krankenstein. This amp was used in his band Damgeplan, after he left Pantera. (Or after Pantera broke up, however you wanna look at it)

      Absofuckinglutely!
      Dimes playing is what made me pick up a guitar, I was 10 years old when I first heard Vulgar Display Power. That album irreparably warped my young mind from the second I first heard Mouth For War, it made me go buy the cassette. The guitar solo from Rise, and the riffs from By Demons Be Driven compelled me to pick up a guitar.

      @@freedomseeds8194 the Black Album made me pick up the guitar and then Countdown to Extinction and Vulgar is what I wanted to be able to do with it. Vulgar really is an awesome guitar album loaded with riffs and they showed everyone how to do it with a three piece metal band in my opinion, I always loved that there was no rhythm guitar under the solos. That album has everything By Demons Be Driven is a fun riff I wore out once I learned how to do pinch harmonics. Hollow is a great ballad. Regular People grooves like a MF’r of course Walk has one of my favorite Dime solo, the first time I saw him do that “fake echo” as he called it my mind was blown it sounded cool and looked cool when he did it and he was so smooth with it.

    Yup, you need the footswitch to engage the 2nd master (solo volume boost)

    You have it working well for your cab, pickups, etc. I was really fond of Dime's tone when he still used the Warhead amps but the Krank was part of his sound evolution. He would really push limits with his tones...insane trebles over solos to get insane squeals and pulls. So many amp companies play it safe nowadays...with everything sounding homogenized.

    • @brandonjackson5865
      @brandonjackson5865 Рік тому +1

      Just an observation of mine is that Dime would use what would be considered extreme EQ settings to dial in his tones. Now it seems like unless they are using a plexi most players keep all their amp knobs around noon. I started playing in the 90s and no one ever assumed an amp was meant to sound its best with all the knobs around noon. We would Dime the treble and bass and dump the mids and when we started down tuning found out we needed to dump the bass and push the mids and treble. I’ve always favored a brighter sound anyway so I’m sure my tone would be ear piercing to some.
      Anyway just a thought everyone sounds the same now because everyone is running recto or 5150/6505 knobs on noon with a boost in front. It’s a great sound but it’s been done to death.
      It’s interesting that Dime always played SS amps until nearly the end, I think he really would’ve embraced the profilers and modeling stuff once it got to sounding good, but who knows he used a lot of gear to get his tones and he always had a tight tone. I just think he would’ve taken advantage of being able to capture all of his eqs and his Randalls.
      Dime came along when the guitar community needed a new hero at least in the metal genre and he was doing something quite different at the time.
      I love all of the Pantera albums but his tone didn’t get great until Far Beyond Driven and for me peaked on The Great Southern Trendkill, Vulgar is their best album to me but his tone wasn’t there yet.
      I wonder if he would’ve stayed with Krank and tube amps or if he would’ve went back to SS . I also think he got away with playing SS because he was in a one guitar band and they didn’t step on each other Rex’s tone was always more mid focused and clanking but it worked.
      Long scattered comment sorry but no one has changed or innovated heavy guitar like Dime did since Dime. I know there’s fantastic players who are technically flawless but it ain’t got the swing the masters like Dime, Eddie, and Billy Gibbons you know?
      Edit: I thought when I heard the first demo of the 5150 iconic the crappy sounding EVH one, I bet Dime would love that amp and could do something with it.

    • @ivsiguitarist
      @ivsiguitarist Рік тому

      @@brandonjackson5865 One thing about Dime...he never took real influence by what was popular...he would always find his own nitch and other players would ape his sound. Even in the end when using some tube amps he still aimed for a similar sound to his solid state days.

    • @brandonjackson5865
      @brandonjackson5865 Рік тому

      @@ivsiguitarist you are right I remember reading that he never learned anyone else’s stuff note for note he said he would learn a couple Randy Rhodes licks and then he would add that to his arsenal and change them up to suit him, then he’d learn some Van Halen , some Billy Gibbons, I think ZZ Top and all those great Texas blues players influenced the brothers more than anything else but Dime said he never wanted to play anyone else’s stuff note for note and I think that’s a great way to think about it. The Pantera reunion proves what a unique player he was. I’m sure Zakk could probably sound closer to Dime if he chose to do it that way, but I think by sticking fairly close to Dime’s rhythm and just hitting the high points of his solos he’s doing it right and very respectful. No one can sound just like anyone else but Dime especially his bends and vibrato is unique to him, but all the greats have that, Marty Friedman ? No one nails his stuff either.

    Fun facts the Sweep Knob is the amp’s Slope Resistor on a 250k pot. So keeping it around 1.5 has it around 30k-40k which is the normal slope resistors in Marshall type amps. Krank Rev’s started as Sovtek Mig100’s which are similar to Marshall builds.
    They’re such killer amps and Pre Amp tube rolling benefits these a lot, I’ve had a Rev 1 since 05’ and still love it.

    This takes me back to 2004. I had two, and I was running my Bernie Rico Jr Vixens and Mr. Hyde through them.
    It's a great amp, one of the reasons for the crazy differing opinions on them is due to the fact after the first couple hundred of them Krank had a run of them with some issues. That run didn't have the monstrous gain, lacked the tightness and articulation, and unfortunately that was the run most people are familiar with. It's also what sank the company.
    I had a blast watching you get to know one of my favorite amps, cheers.

    Dude how have you been playing this long and never learned any of Dime’s riffs. That should be metal guitar 101 for any of us that came up in the 90s , but you’re definitely right his riffs are the right amount of challenging and fun to play once you get them down. I loved his leads of course but for me the greats , it’s all about their rhythm playing Dime and Eddie were complete players their rhythm work is just as good and fascinating as their leads. Both Dime and Ed’s right hand were sneaky good we all know Hetfield, Mustaine , and Malcolm are like metronomes but Dime and Eddie were phenomenal rhythm players too.
    My uncle plays guitar and he was the only person I knew that did before I started playing. When I started he asked me if I wanted to play rhythm or lead, of course I said lead and I showed him some Metallica I was listening to the black album and said I want to do that. He said you want to play rhythm then lol and then I started reading all the guitar magazines and I remember James talking about recording all the rhythm tracks and Kirk saying I’m a lead guitarist but 95 percent of the time I’m playing rhythm on stage but I don’t get to play rhythm in the studio. I remember Dave Mustaine talking about having to teach the lead players how to play rhythm when they would join Megadeth and I was off rhythm guitar is cool and that’s what I need to concentrate on, I had two friends taking lessons and they were going to play lead but I figured anyone could always use a rhythm guitarist.

    Such a shame because you play through these amazing sounding amps but over YT they sound like S**T! I know it is not your fault and that it is just the nature of YT and they way the tone comes across in a video.Even using my expensive phones YT does not reproduce the actual tone of the amps. the tone is thin and fizzy even with amps like the Stealth and the Soldano SLO! So i know it is not the amps!
