Love em or hate em… I’m glad I’ve had my hand in metal history… by helping building most of these beauties back in the Krank days /,,/
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 "the amp, not the drug."
Awesome video, Kyle! Interesting to hear the head with a different cab. There aren’t a lot of good videos on Krank Amps in general, which is surprising considering how ubiquitous they seemed to be in the mid 00’s (remember those ads with all those metal bands?). I actually got a Krankenstein+ combo amp last year, and to me the highs get somewhat evened out when you play with a very low tuning (2 steps or below). This amp seems to love the low B and A tunings especially. Anyway, maybe I’ll do a video sometime, that way this comment doesn’t get any longer lmao
The krank cab is another beast without the speakers. It's solid wood, you'll hear a night and day difference. I suggest a video with the krank half stack and you may change your mind.
17:21 - Sick!
On the amp...I've always enjoyed the unique grind/tone of the Krank Revs/'Steins.
The original Krankensteins (I had #93) did have obscene amounts of gain.
It was more gain than Dime needed, getting those harmonic screams to sustain ridiculously like Cemetery Gates was a breeze.
I think the reason they made later models with less gain, was because there was a lot of bitching about feedback issues with those early models.
Solid review though, thanks man.
Definitely top 3 favorite tube amps of all time.. I used two Randall XL cabs, using 2 V30's and 2 Texas Heat speakers (per cab). Also the first amp I bought a boost for (TS-9). Blended it with a Randall X2 (w/2 RS125XL cabs). As much as I loved it, I don't know if I'd play one live without blending a scooped Randall amp with it.
Good review! I like the tones you got out of the + model. I had the original Krankenstein, and I definitely liked it. I used it with a Splawn cab with the Big/Small Blocks and a TS9. It's a little funny because the Krankenstein was the only amp I liked the TS9 with. I do not think I would buy one again, but I definitely liked it more than the Mesa Stiletto Trident (Stage 1) and the EVH 5153 6L6 I had at the time. I ended up trading the Krank for a modded Marshall JCM900 MKIII 50w model, which blows me away to this day. Nowadays, I feel like my Triple XXX covers the kinds of tones I got from the Krankenstein while being easier to dial in. Still cool amps, though! I liked the sweep feature.
I remember back in the mid-00s everyone was saying that the Krank tone was only good when the volume was near max. It wasn't a bedroom amplifier by any means. Assuming this was with the original cabs, too.
The silver grill Krank cab is pretty. Loaded with Texas Heats and sounds great to me.
yeah man i also got the R1 + and it sound "better" imo because the chainsaw like distortion and very shrill highs are much more balanced in that thing, clean is also bargain! the plus versions of both amps have a better power amp design...
. FX boost knob in back is important to have dimed. Keep playing with settings. Noise gate and boost and it shreds.
I thought your tone was really good! Personally I think the eminence don’t sound as good as the v30. For reference the Rev came with legend v12s and the krankenstein came with the Texas Heat (which I prefer). They are smooth and warm which does cut a lot of that high end off. On my amps I like the sweep in the 3-4 range, presence about half, I drop the treble and boost the mids. I also go low on the bass. I start at zero and turn it up unless I can just hear it filling out. The 50 was mini head has more compression and saturation compared to the big boys and it’s my favorite. Chugs with a tube screamer on 4/10 gain.
It’s important to note the sweep knobs function is where you are focusing the center of the frequency spread. It’s like a wide band eq bump that you can slide up and down the frequency spectrum.
I had an original run Rev head. I found with mine, a darker sounding cab worked great. That and I ran the presence fairly low. Only enough to add that extra sizzle if I needed it.
Couldn’t agree more. Through my mesa cab it worked awesome, through my Marshall or 80’s peavey it’s a little shrill, almost hm2 sounding
I've gone through many different amp heads since the 80's and those Krank amps are by far my favorite. It takes awhile to find the sound that fits you, but when you find it there's no turning to anything else. The biggest problem I've had with my search of the right sound was the volume. At higher volume, almost every amp head I've tried loses its sound and becomes muffled noise with no clarity. These Krank amps cut right through everything else and bring clarity to what you're playing without making you the loudest band mate. If that makes sense. The only other amp heads I've experienced this with are the Marshall JCM800 and the Peavey line of the 5150 / 6505.
I've had 3 Krank heads. 2 original krankensteins and 1 original Revolution. They all sounded a little different from each other. In other words if you set all dials the same, you wouldn't get the same exact sound. So, from my experience you can't use one head to demo and judge.
Also, for some reason, you either love the Krank amp or you hate it. I've never heard anyone say, it's ok....it does the job for now. Either you have it and never want to sell it, or you somehow got one and can't wait to get rid of it.
It's a metal guitarist's dream amp. Thanks for reading!!!
Appreciate your honest review based on your personal opinion/clear explanation of why and possibly the reasons why (8ohm, 16ohm, cabinet voicing, etc...). I always like when a reviewer demonstrates amp settings in this manner: Sounding properly heavy - Chug Life!
Thanks, glad you dug it!
Ya oughta plug it into that Peavey MS412....lol. Yes the Krank cab did have Eminence Texas heats, the cab is also oversized same size as a MusicMan or Sunn 412 but has a port. Great sounding cab.
You definitely got the best out of that amp!
I was not at all happy with the tone until you dialled it in with the mud killer.
Great job dude !!
Cheers 🍻
Remember having this, very mid heavy with a bright or thick fuzziness. Lacked a sharp attack punch
I have had my krankenstein 1st gen head and cab since 2006. I love it but totally agree it's touchy😅. Also the murkiness was there until you get it to about 6 on the master volume. Good videos man.
If you haven't tried the Krank Rev1+, lets just say in a room full of H&Ks, Friedmans, Bogners and ENGLs... it was the best sounding one to my ears for hi gain stuff.
Play a Fryette head, you'll never look back. Deliverance 120 ii
@@realtruenorth I actually owned a VHT Sig:X for many years. It was good but ultimately not what I was looking for tonally, although it could definitely hang with the best of them. I do love a good VHT/Fryette though!!
@@realtruenorth that being said, the Krank Rev1+ is still a fantastic sounding amp that is highly underrated.
@@rugbyguitargod it's what I'm looking for lol
I once bought a Krank Rev 1 half stack loaded with EV speakers for $300.
That amp sounded amazeballs after you got it dialed in. It seemed sort of like a Boss Metal Zone pedal, in that its extreme EQ flexibility inherently lends itself to a lot of bad sounds when not dialed.
Yep, the Krank Krankenstein 4x12" cabs were oversized ported cabs with Eminence Texas Heat speakers.
Had a buddy that got ahold of one of these. Not sure if it was the plus or original, but I couldn't ever get it to sound the way I wanted and I think he had the same issue. He eventually sold it to another buddy of ours and in his group the amp sounds really good. 🤷♂️
Hey Kyle, excellent video! What size strings do you use? Would you be open to doing a video on that if you use different sizes or types? Or maybe you already did. **close up shot ** THANKS!!
Hey Kyle, love your channel and all reviews. Yeah, when you originally reviewed this head I thought, uh, WTF? YES< the 'stein mkI vs mkII there's a diff, and you're on the right track. Man, I need your email address to go over everything I want to describe for you about these...long story short- my buddy Jeff Duncan (Armored Saint) and I both are huge modded Marshall and 5150 users, as well as friends of Tony Krank, and Jeff especially is...we've both used the 'Stein+, and yes its a learning curve to get used to the touchy feel of the tone stack's pots and the presence knobs. Def NOT an amp for quick on the fly setup and go! But, they have serious character, much like their brother the Rev +..........anyhow- that Krank cab, they use Eminence Legend G12s in them. 100w speakers with a MASSIVE magnet, 16ohm setting works well, and they ARE voiced like Celestions, they are designed to emulate a v30, but take the high mid (6khz) sizzle down a bit, and they're awesome. BUT- those cabs weigh more than an Old BUICK LeSabre! :) So, yes. Much like the original 5150s from 92-'02, they pair well with their own cab (those had Scheffields in them- I still own one, and all spkrs are perfect and wiring I upgraded as well as the back jack panel, LOVE that cab now!)...Keep kicking ass with real reviews. My only sugg would be- start off all reviews without the boost pedals. I know that's the craze, but the point is to hear what the amp sounds like (rhythm work) first, then show how it can be changed up to your tastes. Im diggin that pedal you used on this one, that boosts the mids to fill it out a bit more rounded!
Yeah, I like both versions. And again, I totally understand why you do not. It’s a certain aspect of the voicing that you’ve consistently not liked across a range of amps and been quite clear about in your criticisms. This is about as honest and upfront as one can be in reviewing gear. It’s rarely, if ever, for everyone.
I think what we’re missing out on is how this responds in a mix with the bass player and drummer, of course.
Also people tend to utilize pedals so the amp being on the cleaner end I hypothesize would give more room for boosts and or pedals
17:23 that exactly how my bogner uberschall used to sound like before i sold it.
FWIW, As I recall the Krankenstein + model has a choke where the original does not. I'm not totally sure how that affects the tone but, just thought it was worth sharing.
I’ve got a Krank Rev1 412, made with Poplar and came with Eminence 100w Legends. Best cab I’ve ever had.
Fact
I use rack mount affects on my krank krankenstein and it sounds amazing. Yeah it's a pain in the ass to dial in, and i have to run 2 noise gates to shut the damn noise up but its a great sounding amp.
I adore these amps. I really wish Revv or someone would acquire the brand and the design and re-release it
Hey Kyle, I bought mine new in 2007, 120 watt head and both 4x12 cabs, at the time I knew nothing about these amps, but it was a disappointment, I since moved own to a Splawn quick rod 100, with Splawn 4x12 cab, the Krankenstein + and cabs just didn't do it for me, but it's cool owning one of dimes signature amps.
An idea for the next Krank Amp use Overdrive when you turn the Presence up
I have a Krank ninteen80 and have owned a chadwick both great amps
Not sure on this one, but when an amp has channel and master volume isn’t the channel volume what determines how much gets pushed into the poweramp and the master volume attenuates at the output? Meaning pushing the channel volume does introduce sag and compression. Basically what a master volume does on an amp that does not have a channel volume (i.e. 5150). That would explain why it got so noisy.
sounds good I would even go so far as to say it has its own sound. anyways I just wanted to say I love how kyle goes to a whole other level of honesty by letting the haters know they are helping his algorithm I was all like "no shhh quiet dude don't tell them that" but then I saw it from another angle and I was like ya gotta respect that level of honesty.
that's why I feed the trolls! lol
I’d like to hear you dial in a revolution. I think the consensus is that it’s the better amp. I have a rev and it definitely has the same super reactive sweep but I feel I can get a more balanced tone.
Krank Cabs are huge and front ported so they are beefy as hell would recommend them any day
I had the rev+ 120 and it was a lot less”Dimey” thicker and warmer but also had the matching cab🤷🏿
You think maybe putting like a JHS haunting mids in the front of it and boosting the darker mids might’ve helped?
You got a review of the rev 1 dude
I miss my Krankenstien+. I only ever used it to record a solo on an acoustic rock song. But I really did enjoy the amp for metal. The only thing I didn't like is the previous owner had the metal grill powder coated red. I lost the amp in a pawn shop for $400. I had to pay my truck note and was never able to catch up to get it back :/
It was also the last amp I owned for like 8 years before I got my EVH 100 watt el34 head. So yeah I stopped playing after I sold that amp for 8 years before I got back into it.
Damnit. You're making me really miss my old Krank. I really enjoy how it sounds with that mud killer. I may save up and try to buy this one when you purge it out lol.
I had an OG Krankenstein 4 years ago. I liked it at first with a TS9 going in, but I had both the issues you had: a bitch to dial in especially if you accidentally bumped the sweep or master volume knobs and had to start the dialing process all over again, and some sort of grounding/microphonic tube issue (I suspect preamp tubes since I swapped the power tubes immediately after buying it) causing constant hissing that was so bad I ended up having to sell it for $300 (bought it for $800) because every music store and pawn shop I took it to refused to buy it as-is. I've heard circuitry problems like that were/are pretty commonplace with these amps, I just wasn't in a position to get it fixed at the time. That experience really turned me around on having ease of use vs a unique tone with a unique amp. My go-to's now are 5150 family amps and plugins since they're much easier to work with and don't sound too dissimilar. Tone searching is hard enough without an amp that just requires much more work and time to get there.
P.S. Greetings from Reading, fellow Pennsylvanian!
sounds like the same issues I had with my first rev way back in 2010. the shop I returned it to never got it working right and eventually sold it for $200 on reverb
That Dunable is so sick!
I have 2 KRANKENSTEIN cabs but they’re not for sale 😝.. Eminence Texas Heats.. amazing speakers 🔊
"Let's Krank it!!"....you're so punny!!
Hey, you didn't leave the tube sceamer on this time!!
I personally run both volumes equal. I find you get the most balanced tone this way. Otherwise you get super shrill or more bass heavy tones and then you are trying to fix it using the eq.
Thanks for the video man, it was great! I have this amp with KT88 tubes in the power section and the Ruby 12ax7ac5 pre amp tubes. Running through a Randall XL 4x12 with Eminence Texas Heats and Legends in an X pattern at the moment or swap the Legends for Swamp Thangs, absolutely amazing!! I've used multiple different pickups, but I always dig the EMG'S the most. SD-1 in the front and an EQ in the loop. Also don't forget the built in boost on the back of the amp, it's a massive boost!!
Honestly forgot about the boost! Lol.
I think you’ve got a pretty cool name, man.
Great review, please post your final settings…I have exact same Amp with matching cab…could potentially be for sale if anyone is interested….
For a short time they made the Stein in a mini 50w version with camo tolex. That was one of the few mini-heads I ever have really wanted. It had the ruby 5881 pair iirc, and it's presence was on the back.
I have the 50w rev Jr right now
@@belligerentamateur I had the 20w rev-jr for a few years when it was first released. It was OK but forever turned me off on small-watt tube heads. Even though it had a pair of 5881s it was still always small sounding IMO. Plenty loud just not enough beef in the lows and lower midrange for my taste. I was even running it through my recto 212. I also had many of the same complaints as you state in this video.
I dig your honesty , you did your best to get it dialed in. Is there an amp out there where an overdrive is not needed? Have you ever played through a Framus Head?
Yes, but only briefly. I remember liking it, but it being very fizzy
As always Kyle, your honesty is appreciated. 🤘
Appreciate YOU
Ola Englund got a good recording of this amp on his demo,, sounds brootal AF!!
I once had one of these and got "Tony Krank" himself to mod it for me. wish i kept that amp
cant play them with v30s. kranks came with eminence texas heat speakers. try it with eminence speakers
I like that Dunable R2D2. It is strong with the force.
I would love to hear an Orange Dual Dark!
I play a Rev 1+ and it works for me but they are difficult to dial in. Not for everyone...
With the SD-1 and with the Mud Killer it actually sounds pretty fucking good!
There’s a rehearsal studio near by me that allows you to use their in house krank heads. Needless to say I wasted some very valuable time/money and pissed off my band mates attempting to dial a krankenstein head in for about 45 minutes lmao
That intro was sounding killer. Lots of tight, and sick sounding distortion.
thanks man!
Dude if you get a chance to grab a Krank cab don’t even think twice. I haven’t tried the Kstein cabs with the Texas heats, but the rev cabs with Legend V12s is like the best cab I’ve ever heard. All subjective of course but pairs with those Krank heads? Shit man, that’s the peanut butter to that jelly you’re rocking there
cabs/different speakers make a gigantic difference for all amps for sure.
Of course
These amps sound better with Greenbacks than with V30 speakers. Owning the Rev1 for over 15 years now.
A true modded 800 it sound's like. Shrill, bite, brittle. Almost sounds shrill like the JCM900 with the quack, but more full bottom. Interesting. Great vid as always too!
thanks man! Can't say it sounds or feels anything like any Marshall amp, but that's just my experience.
Sounds pretty cool!
You can hear the Sovtek MIG circuit in the Krank amps.
He should definitely demo a Mig 50 also lol.
@@russiangoose7053 Mig 50 can get a good bit of crunch going. The 100H with a boost can hit hard.
@@tbirdpunk I've wanted one for a while just to slam with fuzz pedals for doom but I can't seem to find the amps in stock anywhere :(
@@russiangoose7053 Electro Harmonix Reissued the Mig-50 under the EH brand. Mig100's of any stripe can be tricky to find and the prices have been insane for years. The Mig 60 is a great rock amp along the lines of a JCM800. But, they are also expensive and hard to find in good condition. I wouldn't pay what anyone is asking for one these days. Better modern options without all the maintenance quirks that come with a Russian built amplifier from the mid 90's.
@@tbirdpunk yeah the few vintage ones I've seen online are pretty pricey and for what they're asking online I could buy a used Orange head of some kind lol. I'd be happy with the EHX reissue but every place I've checked they've been back ordered for a long time which is no surprise these days. I've been looking for a loud budget head and a Mig would be perfect but I've also looked at the Orange crush heads as well as doing a pedal+power amp based rig. Do you know any other good budget amps besides those?
Hey Kyle, how is that Waza Craft Super Overdrive working for you? I've got the regular version, and its working wonders on the current Mesa Boogie Dual Rec I bought a few months ago. 👍🤘
it's cool but honestly I keep it on stock setting 95% of the time
I so desperately need a new amp too after just buying a HB fusion 3. Im playing through a small Fender amp and a old Peavey Bandit 112 that I've owned for like 20 years...
Gonna have to check out the price tag on this or something... And by the way subscribed !
I would look for something cheaper, and also better. Lol
Ha my first thought was pretty much what I commented on your previous Krankenstein video - the tone sounds like a great match for your playing to my ear. They are a bit fussy to dial in, and I believe the tweaks Dimebag made to the Rev circuit for the Krankenstein aren't really ideal for the circuit. The channel and global master volumes were his idea and I don't think the amp really benefits from those but he insisted. I think the only other changes are to do with the clean channel and maybe having a touch more gain.
That said, so many of Andy Sneap's best guitar tones used one of these amps and I was quite surprised how often it was used on his work (I could count more albums with Krank's on them than I could 5150). Always preferred these with Celestions, but anything other than Celestion sounds bad to my stubborn ears.
I think the Krankenstein comes alive a bit more when you crank the global master a little higher (so its affecting the circuit less). Lasse's videos are basically all dialled that way - I'm pretty sure the presence circuit is designed around that global master not being in the circuit (i.e. on 10).
hell no i dont hate your the best man all the amps i only wish i could afford and check out i get to check out through you on your channel. You got awsome guitars a kick ass attitude whats not to like
Would you considering doing a review of the Orange Super Crush 100 head? It would be interesting to hear your views on this amp given that it’s considered to be one of the best solid state amps.
I second this.
Please please please do a peavy Windsor I’ve heard a lot of good reviews great video had usual the goat 🤘🏻⚡️👍🏻🤩
I know that's not really an high gain amp, but have you ever tried to dial with a 1000 series BEDROCK head? and with the 4x12 with bedrock speakers?
Dude what Jackson is that damnnnn
Just wanted to say you seem generally pretty likable. For the algorithm.
I used to be endorsed by Krank. I chose the Rev1. I thought it was a much better amp than the Krankenstein. I was way happier when I made the move to VHT though.
As far as I'm concerned there are no better amps than a VHT/Fryette Pittbull. I have a 50 CL and it's the best amp I have ever heard ever.
@@Eliphas_Elric I regret selling my VHT stuff, but my Matamp GT120MV is the best amp I’ve ever owned.
@@sonictemple2925 A matamp GT120MV is definitely on my wish list.
I was too. Then the drummer of my band ruined it. 😂😂😂
@@Eliphas_Elric I feel like such an asshole having paid only 1200 for mine. I wish I knew high end tube amps would be my best performing investment a decade ago. I would have crowned myself amp king and bought them all. My Mark IV Rev A was my other steal for $870. Had a 78 Marshall JMP MV(pre JCM 800) that was also an $800 amp. I woke up a decade later and 2c+ went from 2k to 10k, quad preamps from 500 to 2k, and new ENGL, VHT, Diezel etc starting at basically 3k. Meanwhile Carvin Legacy amps and Peavey 5150 are the same price as before.
I just want one for the collection…great video
Same, but didn't keep this one.
Dunno about that one. I think you'd play hell trying to get it to sound good in a mix. Simply put, it's the 88 magnum of amps.
If I ran this. A 10 band eq all the way
The amp sounded much better with EMGs. Oh, BTW, have you ever tried a Framus Cobra?
I own a Framus Cobra head and can vouche. That amp out of the box sounds better then my Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier head does. Just has better clarity and thick and tight punchy low end.
Your channel has become my go to for amp reviews. I've learned a lot from watching and how to persistently dial in an amp before just writing it off as shit. Have you or anyone here had any experience with the Joyo Mjolnir?
glad to hear it my man!! Happy you're here. no experience with the joyo, unfortunately
@@belligerentamateur its a cool 15 watt head with some interesting features especially for its price. Love the channel so far thanks for your reply and keep up your great work man.
you used a Mesa standard cab. This amp sounds awesome through a Recto cab with EMGs. Also, this gain should have way more gain than it sounds like without a boost. Something is wrong here. Maybe it doesn't like your pickups.
Krank sux. Review a Laney TONY IOMMI
That Dunable guitar you initially used with the stock pickups sounded horrible. Once you played the Jackson, it sounded much better!
They used Eminence V12's to tame the harshness.
Yup. That sounded fucking great.
Cool sounding amp. More respectable than TS9/5150/V30/SM57 sheeple clones and drones tone.
Cringe
Hey do the Engl metalmaster please
You forgot the last step to making it sound better, that is replace it with something else. I'm just hear to help 👍
i have a mesa 4x12 with 4 krank 12's eminence usa made, blackbacks. they are 1216, a gt75 kind of , they want to play a krank krankenstein so bad, but i got a 51502 =/
Be happy, you have the much better amp
Hmmm…an amp that’s designed by Dimebag and it’s really bright.
I own a rare krankenstein plus that came from an eBay vendor from a pawn shop in California. It's the only one with independent fx loops for each channel as well as a main fx loop. The krank logo is signed on the K by some anonymous signature. Anyone know anything about this one off?? Looks like an artist custom made by official Krank Factory.
Sounds like you got an amp modified by a second party. It’s def not rare, and probably unwanted by collectors. But if that’s not an issue, by all means.
@@dknights6414 it's all oem from factory I've seen internally and it's all factory and I've had it looked at by a proshop and confirmed. Def collectors but not parting with it for a long time. Gonna love it and shred like dime would have wanted
Sounds great man and looks cool which matters.
ALL THAT MATTERS
God this amp has so much texture and nastiness
Anyone techs here know what the Krankenstein+ tubes should be biased to? Would be a big help. Thanks

The Rev 1 is by and far a better amplifier.
