  • Customers might ask you what’s the difference between trade and retail paint and why it’s worth the investment.
    All Dulux our trade paints are fundamentally superior than our retail paints and that’s a #FACT.
    Tony Pearson-Young from Dulux Academy talks to AkzoNobel R&D expert Jess Fisher to discuss the science behind why our trade paints out perform retail ones and why trade paint applied by a professional will always give the best result.

    Fair play to Dulux for putting this out - whether as a direct response to SB or not.
    It’s a double edge sword, use your own people who are skilled in chemistry or painting and uncomfortable in front of a camera (I know better than many commenters the felling of being in front of a camera for the first time), or use third party actors
    For the video and get stuck for scripting.
    I’m not a painter, and I’ve used many brands of paints.
    To me it’s a a simple using a product or service that your both happy with and happy to pay for.
    I had to do 5 coats of delicious gloss retail at home several years ago, and now only use trade..... 5 separate visits to job is soon more expensive than the cost of a trace paint.

Why sell all the other paints from stuff that's like water through to the Easycare range ? Why not get rid of all the rubbish and with the money you save on tooling storage, research etc. you could pass the savings to your trade paint, and then everyone could use a product that is actually fan-bloody-tastic. 1. You mention that on the Trade product, you add more white pigment to improve "intrinsic opacity". But does this mean there is negligible difference between Retail Pure Brilliant White and Trade Pure Brilliant White as they are both entirely composed of white pigment anyway and therefore opacity would be about the same?
    2. If the wall is freshly plastered and well skimmed, is there less of a reason to use Trade paint compared to Retail?

    • @bitTorrenter
      @bitTorrenter Рік тому

      It's not just the white pigment TiO₂ that has very good hiding properties compared to other pigments.
      The other ingredients (binders) will also affect the overall opacity as she was explaining they hold the pigments closer together and there are better and more binders in total in the Trade Paints.

    • @bitTorrenter

      Applying on a freshly plastered wall will only accentuate the difference between the retail and trade versions. It's also customary to do a 'mist' coat, especially with Vinyl Matt for example as the coat will not adhere properly otherwise. Contract Matt is usually used on fresh plaster.

    I'm not one to comment or post on UA-cam, however am really disappointed seeing this video along with the skillbuilder one. I've used Dulux for years but clearly Dulux is forgetting the customer here. Really can't understand the business logic of Dulux trying to educate us all on the science behind paint. Basically this video is informing me that your retail paint is a cheap poor quality paint and doesn't cover even after two coats. I felt for the guy in the skillbuilder video as I've been there, running around at the weekend checking all the B&Q stores for another can of paint to finish the job before the weekend ends. Fortunately I didn't go to a trade store. The reason I was looking at these video's is because I'm just about to start to repaint a few rooms in my house over the winter month's and was looking at some colour ideas. To me paint is paint but Dulux paint had good customer service. Not any more it would seem. Again really disappointed. P.S. I'm not looking for a response just wanted to share my thoughts on this video.

  • @Lloyd1885
    @Lloyd1885 Рік тому

    Why is there such a vast difference in price? (White 5 litres, DDC price, £39, average retail price, £18) Trade doesn't cover twice as well, or go twice as far as retail. (Trade vmatt 17m² retail matt 14m²)
    If a surface needs two coats for it to be covered sufficiently then why not just buy retail?...certainly in the case of masonry paint. In the case of matt then trade is better because of the higher proportion of vinyl, the retail washes off with a damp sponge, its like a basic contract matt...so if durability is an issue, then trade would be the go to product.
    This brings me to why was the vinyl content reduced so considerably in retail paint? I was told by Dulux it was due to the voc regs, absolute nonsense, it was never an issue, and if it was an issue, why wasn't trade matt treated in the same way? My theory is that it was to 'encourage' domestic buyers to move over to the durable acrylic based matts that were starting to hit the market at around the same time.
    Its fair to say though that this isn't wholly a Dulux thing, johnstones and crown also followed suit.
    It seems the trade market is subsidising the retail sector, I guess you are assuming because the customer is paying via the contractor thn it doesnt matter what you charge?

    I have tried both versions of paints recently with a home refurb project and this is why I came looking for answers.
    I was buying matt white trade emulsion for £35 for 10l because there was no retail version available. I had to mist coat and apply 2 coats on top of my new ceilings to get a good finish. This paint ran out and I managed to buy a 10l retail version of the paint for £20. I still used a mist coat and 2 further coats to get the same finish.
    They went on the same, although the trade version did go on the roller a little easier, what was I paying for? I even used the retail paint to touch up when I scagged the ceiling of where I applied the trade paint and see no difference?

      Must admit, as a non-tradesperson, I've long been under the impression that, in general, trade paint may well be for 'the trade'.., but that it was inferior to that available to the retail customer who wanted a decent paint job. ie, a paintwork that lasts, doesn't look tired after 6 months, and doesn't leave a mark if you so much as brush against it.
      In summary, for me 'trade paint' has been a euphemism for cheap, easy to apply paint, available in bulkier containers than available to retail customers. As used by those working for landlords.

There is a lot more to it than that and you would know if you’re using it everyday. It’s a lot more cost effective to get the more expensive and superior paint than spending more time trying to make the cheaper paint work.

    I can mix mortar and stick a brick on top - doesn’t make me a bricklayer.
    I can wire a socket - doesn’t make me an electrician.
    Anyone can push a brush around a wall - doesn’t make them a painter

    Dulux. This is obviously a result of The Skill Builder channel, which in the end you kindly invited them to your academy. However I think you’re missing the point somewhat. Your Trade Paint is obviously better than your retail, but what people are so annoyed about is your so called Trade Centres ripping customers off. Your Trade Paint can be purchased in Toolstation for considerably cheaper than your Trade Centres. For heavens sake, you make the stuff, there is no middle man, show some actual common sense and at least make it the same price as the third party retailer. Stop ripping people off in your Trade Centres.

    I beg you all to go the Albany route as it’s great coverage and is affordable for the end user...
    Dulux is (disgustingly) overpriced.
    The other company’s have all caught up now and Dulux or should we say, the globally greedy Akzonobel, should be forced to slash prices!!!
    You are no longer No1

    • @DuluxTradeUK
      @DuluxTradeUK  5 місяців тому +1

      Retail paints are produced to help DIY users achieve a better finish. The trade range is designed for professionals, who use the paint day in and day out. There is nothing to say that a DIY user cannot purchase and use trade paint, but they may find it trickier to apply.

  • @TheOlzee

    Looking at these comments the retailer is pissed off cos they feel like they’re being sold shit paint and the tradesmen are pissed off because they feel they’re being ripped off lol
    Trying to look at this without a bias I think dulux are doing what all companies do, keep evolving to keep earning more dosh. The retail has evolved all the way to one coat finish emulsion (must pretty damp fantastic then) to the trade that now could probably defeat cancer if you’re willing to paying triple the cost.
    All firms are out for MONEY. But there does get to a point where it’s taking the mick and people notice it
    This video was utter bs. Talking about chocolate and peanuts 🙄 just lower the price. But I know what a silly request that is. Lol

      That's something you'd want to take up with the manufacturer of the paint you purchased. We make a range of paints designed for DIY customers and domestic projects, and another range designed for professional customers and commercial projects. Both of are a high quality - the trade range is superior, but will cost more in comparison 👍

    • @Christopher_T_Paul
      @Christopher_T_Paul 3 роки тому +2

      @@elvis459 Well no professional just means you do this for a job. Even if you have little skill and do it as your regular job, you are a professional.
      I am an electrician by trade and know many skilled decorators, but working on building sites, you will likely work with professionals who are employed to cut corners and get houses decorated as fast as they can, missing out mist coats etc.

    • @elvis459
      @elvis459 3 роки тому +1

      @@Christopher_T_Paul it still means a little more than just getting paid to do it. I couldn’t walk around telling people I’m a professional electrician and doing bodge jobs in their homes. An Electrician needs to be trained to make a statement like that. There is no requirement to have training to be a painter. Some do a “professional” job and some just slap paint on.

    Feel sorry for Dulux but it’s a bed they’ve made for themselves. At this point, they should expressly state on their trade paints, “same colour but better quality ingredients”.
    Most of the ppl here are simply being annoying idiots who don’t understand manufacturing and why they’re poo-pooing the ladies academic credentials. The analogy of this issue is like the difference between Supermarket own brand value baked beans and their higher quality baked beans. Both are made from the same ingredients and they make the same recipes but one tastes like watered down mush and the other tastes like baked beans.

    Sorry, does not justify the 3x price for trade. I don't trust Dulux anymore and will be switching.
    I am also surprised with the 100% increase in the trade product over the last year along with the retail/trade prices. Other paint manufactures have not increased as much, which can only point to one thing. Dulux are adding margin on top of their increase material costs caused do the shortages.
