SPECIAL FEATURES: This Retro Deluxe kit stays true to the original with its vintage packaging but comes with an expanded decal sheet for even more decorating options! It features off road vinyl tires, a highly detailed 345 V-8 engine and transmission, authentic front and rear axle assemblies with “snap-lock” free rotation axle pins, and more.
QUICK SPECS: 1/25 scale, over 53 parts, and approximately 6.5 Inches long once assembled. Parts molded in yellow plastic, clear, and chrome-plated parts. Deluxe expanded decal sheet included. Paint and model cement are required. Skill 2 rating.
The International Harvester Scout is an off-road vehicle produced by International Harvester from 1961 to 1980. A precursor of more sophisticated SUVs to come, it was created as a competitor to the Jeep, and it initially featured a fold-down windshield. The Scout and second-generation Scout II were produced in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as two-door trucks with a removable hard top with options of a full-length roof, half-cab pickup, and/or soft top.
Scout IIs were manufactured from April 1971 to 1980. The design was finalized much earlier, with a version nearly identical to the production model shown to management during December 1967.[5]
The Scout II is most identifiable by its different front grilles. The 1971-1972 Scout IIs shared the same grille, three horizontal bars between the headlights and chrome rings around the headlights. The 1973 Scout IIs had 14 vertical bars between the headlights, a split in the middle, seven bars on each side surrounded by chrome trim pieces and an "International" model plate low on the left side. The 1974-75 Scout II grilles were the same as 1973, with the addition of a vertical bar trim overlay. The 1975 had chrome and black, square trim rings around the headlights; 1976 had the same headlight trim rings as 1975, and a chrome center grille of 15 horizontal bars split into three sections was used in this year only. The 1977-79 Scout IIs used the same grille between the same headlight bezels the new chrome grille had two large horizontal bars with three vertical support lines and the "International" nameplate moved up to the center of the grille on the left side.
Scout II’s could be ordered with the Traveltop, which was the full metal top, Roadster which was a half-cab variant seldom seen, or with a soft top.
In 1980, the final year of production for the Scout, the grille was a very distinctive design, available with black or silver, a one-piece grille with square headlights, made of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic. Both grille color options had imprinted chrome trim around the headlights and an "International" name mark located on the left side. Starting with late 1974 Scout IIs, disc and power brakes were standard features. Early 1974 models had disc brakes as a rarely selected option. Very few 1971-1979 Scout II’s were ordered in RWD-only configuration, most were 4WD.
Before International discontinued the Scout in 1980, International experimented with Scout-based minivans, station wagons, dune buggies, Hurst-built special editions (in similar fashion to the Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds and Hurst SC/Rambler), and even a small motorhome. These plans were ended due to the International Harvester strike of 1979-80, and a lack of funds for the company to expand the Scout product line, let alone continuing production of the Scout itself.[6]

Really nice job Chris as always. My Uncle Pete bought one when they first came out. My grandfather had one one of the first Scouts to come out. You had to get out and turn the hubs on the front wheels to engage the 4wheel drive. My uncle was always trying to out do my grandfather. The whole electrical system went out on Pete's two months after he bought it. It took them almost that long to fix it. I will have to build this kit to remember them with. That's a nice aspect of this hobby! I spent my whole life in military and was never home to see them very often. Thanks Chris you awakened some memories with this one. Great job! Stay well.

You're bringing back some memories. We had a '71 International Travel-All when I was a teenager in the '70s, and I liked driving it. It met its demise one afternoon when the aftermarket amp gauge shorted out and set the wiring on fire. I was driving when it happened.
My mom got me this kit back in the 70s when she worked for Kidde and Ertl was a subsidiary. I wasn't allowed to paint it because I was like 9 years old but it was okay to have the model glue that made you high.

Love it, my mom had a brown and white (i think) 79 Scout that her brother and his buddies drove into a lake and got it stuck in the middle. They left it there for about a day or so, saying it was at their friends house, eventually, my grandpa found it and had to pull it out with a dozer, it was that stuck. but none the less, the engine was seized and began rusting and was sold.

We went on vacation to visit my grandparents up north. My grandpa bought my brother and I this very same kit. It was an Ertl I believe. One of my best memories was building that model with him. Mine was no where as nice, but I was proud. Years later my father had the real deal. Never would sell it to me.

I believe that’s a rereleased kit from the original amt kit! I remember when I was 15 years old in 1978. I put together that same model. I used to see so many on the road back then, that i just had to have one! Onlist as a model! Lol 😂 man I wish I still have that model! Great job putting that one together!👌😎👍

International, during this time period, loved their red colored engines. All the International big rig kits I’ve done from the Ertl era called for red International in-house engines. According to the big rig “experts” they’d even paint the Detroit engines red. Meh, I’ll alway paint a Detroit it’s proper Alpine Green. Great build as always, just put in an order for this and the sport version over at Model Roundup. Love that place!!
Yes, so many people try to tell me that the engine in the International cabover I did this year is 'wrong' because it's red.

I bought this model on a whim simply because I love IH, but I’m so intimidated because I’ve never done model building or painting. You’re build helped put some of my worries at ease, but I’m still nervous.
Top job again Chris - I was looking at this as a box filler for free shipping but even then was a bit put off by the simplicity. However as usual your detailing brings it to life so pushed the button...doh. Yr trim detailing work on the side and trans tunnel inside is really nice. Even the headlights came out OK despite being no transparency. Loving the green for a forest hunter look but may go with red to suit the Rally livery. Good one
Great build Chris! My family has had 3 Scouts over the years. I think the engine color depended on the engine size. My last Scout was a 73 with a Jade Green (Pontiac Green) color V8 engine. But my Dad's 78 Scout II Traveler had the red engine 348 CI V8. Funny thing is all 3 of our Scouts had an Olive Green interior. Great job of bringing these old vehicles back to life.

I owned several of these Trucks my 75 was this color but in 75 it was an XL which stood for extra load capacity and the white stripes didnt go up on hood just down sides front to rear. loved that vehicle wife still wishes we had it as it was way better than newer cars. it also had sliding windows on sides and AC

Ah memories my dad had a 76 scout II and for Xmas one year my uncle built him this kit when It originally was released and painted it to match my dad's actual scout!

I got through with a scout 2 it was the version that had soft top with the roll bar and a 4" lift running broads lights and custom flatbed trailer the scout was painted in the flat brown with gold and black stripes seat all in brown with a bed cover says IH 4×4. Then one I most liked in real life was like your green 1# but mine was light brown and wood grain application with 15 ×15" tries.

I built it back in August 1978 when I made changes open top INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER SCOUT II and I added roll bar and I made it us navy with white removable top and u.s.navy commissary store Kingsville tx

AVD models Vaz 2129. You'll find it on ebay! Not cheap, curbside and 1:43 but pretty good quality. They do very high definition resin kits, with occasional cast metal parts!

They usually come in white, but sometimes they'll issue a kit in color.
Did you know that top on the scouts cam off I loved them had 3 back in day only you not get for the scout was a lift was not available.

hi , its a prick of a kit that bloody freightliner ..but if you take your time an make sure you get everything lined up right it can turn out good ..the cab seams will drive you insane if you want to keep the rivet detail ..good luck an hope you have fun ..

I would be very interested in seeing the Molotow marker used for the chrome trim. That Sharpie works very well, but, well, it is not chrome, and outside of Chrome foiling a kit , seeing the Molotow in use would be a deciding factor on it's usefulness in the tool box! I've got one of these models still in the box. I was never very good at models so I just keep the box on a shelf. I've had many real Scouts and pickups before. I'm better with the full sized ones. lol

An idea just hit me. If you can scrounge up some police car lights you could build this up as a conservation officer's rig

Yeah I like that build too too bad they didn't have the four cylinder that it would originally came with I would like to build it that way I had a spare engine at home but it won't fit in there there's no way to mount it it's too narrow we'll have to modify the engine mount somehow
