The Ford Ranchero is a Pickup /coupe utility that was produced by Ford between 1957 and 1979. Unlike a standard pickup truck, the Ranchero was adapted from a two-door station wagon platform that integrated the cab and cargo bed into the body. A total of 508,355 units were produced during the model's production run.[2] Over its lifespan it was variously derived from full-sized, compact, and intermediate automobiles sold by Ford for the North American market.
During the 1970s, the Ranchero name was used in the South African market for a rebadged Australian Ford Falcon utility. Shipped from Australia in complete knock down (CKD) form, these vehicles were assembled in South Africa at Ford's plant in Port Elizabeth.[3] In Argentina, a utility version of the locally produced Ford Falcon was also called Ranchero.[4]
The original Ranchero sold well enough to spawn a competitor from General Motors in 1959, the Chevrolet El Camino.
In 1960, the Ranchero became much smaller, based on Ford's compact Falcon, specifically the two-door sedan delivery variant. The popularity of small, economical cars like the Volkswagen Beetle perpetuated a shift in thinking among the three largest American manufacturers; 1959 had the introduction of the 1960 Falcon along with the 1960 Chevrolet Corvair and Plymouth Valiant. A pickup version of the Volkswagen Bus and a van based on the Chevrolet Corvair were offered, as well. The economic recession of the late 1950s also certainly played a role. Ford believed the market wanted a more practical vehicle, one much smaller, lighter, and cheaper than a full-sized pickup truck, and indeed the Ranchero sold well in this incarnation. Now marketed in print as the "Falcon Ranchero", the new vehicle's standard powerplant was an economical 144 cu in (2.4 L) straight-6. In 1961, the 170 cu in (2.8 L) straight-6 was offered, and in 1963, the optional 260 cu in (4.3 L) V8 was offered in addition to the 144 and 170. The two-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission (offered between 1960 and 1963) or three-speed C4 Cruise-O-Matic could be ordered as could a three-speed manual transmission. The Ranchero had an 800-lb load capacity.[13]
Three almost entirely different coupé utility bodies were available for this generation of Falcon: the Australian Falcon Ute differed in having a shorter rear overhang than North American models, a cargo box that extended farther forward than the rear window, and shorter doors, while the Argentinian version also shared the sedan's overall length and short "four-door" doors, adding higher and more squared-off cargo box sides.
The Ranchero evolved along with the Falcon in 1964, becoming just a little larger along with its parent and using the same basic body style for 1964 and 1965. In 1965, the 289 cu in (4.7 L) V8 replaced the discontinued 260 and an alternator replaced the generator in all Ford cars.
Aluminum Model Toys, commonly abbreviated as AMT, was a Troy, Michigan-based company that manufactured various pre-assembled plastic promotional models starting in 1948, when attorney West Gallogly, Sr. started it as a side business. Later, a variety of kits became very popular. Most of the company's vehicle products were American cars and trucks in 1:25 scale. In the 1970s, hot rods, customs, trucks and movie and TV vehicles were also produced.
Because Gallogly had solid connections with Ford Motor Company, he was able to place his first models exclusively in Ford dealerships, starting a long promotional relationship (Cawthon 2002). Gallogly's first model was a 1947-1948 Ford Fordor sedan made of cast aluminum and painted with official Ford paint (Cawthon 2002). After issuing successful Ford sedan models, the company set up shop on Eight Mile Road outside Detroit (Chrysler 2008).
In 1949, injection plastic molding became available. After the first Ford aluminum promotional model was offered (Doty 2008, 89), aluminum was abandoned. Different colors of plastic could now be used, so the company name was quietly changed to AMT, which deemphasized the word "aluminum" (Cawthon 2002). For example, AMT's 1949 and 1950 Ford and Plymouth sedans were its first plastic models, along with the 1950 Studebaker coupe. These promos often had wind-up motors which could not be seen through the shiny silver-tinted windows. They had metal chassis and diecast metal chrome-plated bumpers, which were later replaced with chrome-plated plastic. Often, official factory paint colors were applied to the models. The company's first commercial products were pre-assembled plastic promotional models, which were only available through automobile dealerships,
In the early 1950s day-to-day operations of the company were turned over to George Toteff so that Gallogly could better attend to his law firm.

This kit was originally issued in 1961, depicting a '61 Ranchero. It was a customizing kit in the Styline series which came with custom front and rear treatments and a tube of putty to smooth them in place. The hood was molded in, and it was a curbside kit - basically a promo with no engine. This issue has a few of the Styline custom parts included, not seen in a long time. In the mid '70s, it was reissued as the Custom Ranchero with an opened hood, a 427 Chevy big block, and Keystone mags. Later '90s issues replaced the Keystones with the ugly three spoke '80s wheels, but not much else was changed. The last issue was the "Little Eliminator" which included a newly tooled '60 grille and bumper, and a few new accessories. The Coke version looks pretty nice, and I suppose it's not a big surprise that a Coke branded version of this kit hit the shelves.

Beautiful model. The tonneau cover really makes it pop. I remember gas stations when I was a kid. I see all of these Coke builds, and the old school service stations behind them. It is a shame there does not seem to be a modern desire for anything like that. I may be remembering HO scale models too, idk. Again, really nice model.

My favorite video on a plastic model build. A vintage mold with inherent vintage fit-up problems taking extra time to do it right. An oldie but goodie. AMT would never choose this model as a new fresh mold these days, so glad it is in good enough condition to still exist. Wish AMT would refurbish and repair some of their other vintage molds sponsoring someone like Coca Cola to get them out there. Yes, the 1960 Ranchero is a Falcon. The original wheels had 4 lug nuts with AMT supplying 5 lug nuts steelies. Too bad it doesn't come with a 6-cylinder. The factory didn't offer a V8 for 1960, let alone a GM-style V8. Dad had one. For parts, he'd go to the junkyard and take parts off a Mustang. They were mechanically identical. I wonder if there is a 1964-1/2 Stock Mustang model with 6-cyl engine I could use to build this Ranchero.

Chris - somewhat surprised that in your Western Star boxx review you mentioned you prefer assembly over painting - you do so much amazing paint-work! Great tips for making grat models without obsessing over super-detailing. "Building For Yourshelf" is so wise! Enjoy how you make even 60s era promo style annual builds shine - this Ranchero was a modified reissue of the old AMT "Styline" kit including the Chevy engine - hence 90s period wheels. Thank you to genuises at R2 for including stock steelies & caps....

In my last comment, I complained about all of these Coca Cola themed kits driving up prices. However, I've reconsidered. I'm still not a big fan but I'll be buying a few of them for a project soon. I'm scratch building a 1/24-1/25 scale late 60s - early 70s service station diorama so, I'll obviously need vehicles from that era. They're easy to come by. On the other hand, I'll also need soda machines outside the building. I figure buying a few of these Coke kits will make my build easier and also cheaper. Scale soda machines are usually diecast and very pricey! I know there are Pepsi themed kits available but, I might have to check the aftermarket for R C Cola and other decal sets just to make things interesting.

As usual, great job. One thing I don't think I have ever seen you do - on tough to glue pieces I like to use super glue accelerator as well as the super glue. I built a couple sprint cars that I don't think I could have done the steering without the accelerator - binds the 2 pieces in about 10 seconds.

      Thanks for watching my friend!
Remember, just because I don't show it doesn't mean it's not done.
I can't show every single step in these videos. These are kit reviews, showing what can be done with a kit. These are not kit making classes, though I do show a lot of the stuff I do to make a kit because people said they enjoy that.
I've even considered just doing kits in primer only and leaving it with no final paint work because people get mired in the tiny details of how I choose to build a kit and miss the point of the review. Thanks again bud!

In 1960, the Ranchero became much smaller, based on Ford's compact Falcon, specifically the two-door sedan variant. Kit brings back memories of the 63 I had.

Great job on the Ranchero. As an owner of a 1/1 scale Falcon sedan here in Australia, 1/25 model's for them are hardly available. I do have a couple of resin body shells and I bought a few of the AMT 61 Rancheros year's ago to kitbash. The only downside of these releases are the engine choice and the engine bay which bears no resemblance to the full size car/ute. Ute ( or Utility in Australia ) is actually shorter in the rear and used the 4 door sedans front doors whereas the American Rancheros used 2 door sedan, which Australia never had. Thanks for the video and stay safe.

It just baffles me that AMT didn't tool up at least a straight six for this when they re-issued it with new rims and tires a few years back. Some old BBC engine for the fail. And ditch those horrible 90's wheels and restore the Cragars!

Great job on this Ranchero Chris but I did catch it when you said the engine was a GM. I did some research on the specs for the year and it came with a 289 Windsor.
Believe me I wasn't busting you chops over this, just thought I'd do a little history. Love watching your builds and the techniques you use for painting. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to your next build. 😊👍👍

On the Coke cooler, that was a bottle opener top right and the bottle cap clean-out bottom right, inside the bottles were standing in very cold water. Some machine had a coin op one -bottle-at-a- time release while others were a holding tank.
