Its a shame that Andrew gets a lot of flak from those who fetishizes the Raimi movies as well as MCU spider-man, and I'm a big MCU fan myself. Even with the flawed story its just so fascinating to see Andrew's take on Spider-Man being more genuine. If it wasn't for the politics for the movie rights as well as Sony's hasty nature to make their own cinematic universe, we probably could've still watch Andrew be Spider-Man.
exactly, Id be way more exited to see him in No Way Home than Tobey. Mostly because Andrew was soo good he deserve another chance, to do his character's story justice.
My favorite Spiderman scene happens in amazing 2 where Peter and Harry are having a hang out at a park and Peter hops over a railing and hangs backwards over the water. It was a nice visual metaphor for how he uses danger to emotionally distance himself and how that was messing with their friendship. There were a lot of little nice character moments like that which made all the relationships in those movies pop
I feel like when people look at the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man they think of him as the rami Spider-Man personality because that’s what a lot of people grew up with and what they come to identify the character as, they neglect the comics before because that’s not their Spider-Man. Unfortunately alot of them do not comprehend the idea that their version isn’t perfect and there can be different interpretations of the character.
Proof that some Spider-Man movie fans haven’t even read the comics: i saw one guy say Andrew was a bad Spider-Man because he didn’t save Gwen… Even though that literally happens in the comics.
For the last 2 years I've been trying to tell my friends why I love TASM movies, and this video explains it perfectly. Andrew is my Spider-Man and I'm super excited to see him return in far from home
This is how it’s done. This is how one should compare live action adaptations with the source material and not by just finding a panel that looks similar to the cinematography or actor.
You could argue that bully maguire is the most comic accurate Spider-Man. He has anger issues (pins Eddie against the wall), is a flirtatious trickster, and has the Parker luck
The bully Maguire arc should have happened in the first movie when you put it like that doesn't need a black suit just getting the powers in the first place would work just as well
I honestly wouldn't have complained if Andrew was the MCU's Spider-Man. Holland is a great actor, but I prefer the themes and ideas of Andrew's first movie over anything with MCU Peter.
@@tarnishedpose he is a great actor, we just don’t like the fact he doesn’t portray a correct version. If that makes sense. Andrew has acting and the actor down. Which is good.
Tobey’s Spidey, to me, has become more of anrole model akin to Superman. He represents the best of us, what we SHOULD strive to be. That’s why it isn’t only nostalgia to many people, it’s a genuine love and passion for an idol. That doesn’t mean he is the perfect incarnation of the character. While I love all the Spider-Men equally, Tobey was the most impactful. But I’ve also met people who have been equally impacted by Andrew and even Tom. The core of Spider-Man is what unites us fans, and only favoritism that divides us. All three actors deserve recognition and respect.
There's a reason Tobey's version is still beloved despite being innacurate: Quality>Accuracy. He made Spider-Man into a Superman-like beacon of inspiration. It's different than the comics, but seeing as it's the one version that still resonates with most people, can anyone really say that Raimi did a bad job?
Raimi made a spider-man movie from the version of the character he remembered and what stuck with him. And the man has a very strong personal style. Honestly if sony didnt interfer as much as they do, i would love to see how all these films would have turned out.
I think we really shouldn’t be wasting energy trying to find the perfect Spider-Man because there’s no such thing. There were plenty of versions of the character before the movies even came out. It just matters which one is best as a movie character.
Andrew Garfield definitely was the most comic accurate Peter out of them all. And I’m glad he’s getting the praise that he never got after No Way home.
I think that's the general consensus. He had(possibly) the most potential, but the worst writers. If he's in No Way Home and they kill one off, I actually hope it's Garfield and they give him an amazing send off holding more back than Tom can and Tobey can't because he's just getting older.
@@brt1strrbb110 why does it have to be garfield though? What if they end up killing off tobey's version? Plus we don't know if they will actually kill one of them yet.
@@mystery4561 I did say "if they kill one off." My reason, I think he deserves, not to be the focus as it still HAS to be about Holland, but for him to have one of the biggest moments. Really just going hard against multiple opponents
i have finally found my people, Andrew IS Peter Parker he IS Spider-Man! He embodies that character so perfectly and it helps that he cares about spidey so much, if you don’t believe me just search his SDCC speech, I will be honoring and representing him in the NWH premier night by dressing as spidey in tasm 2
Nice to see some proper love given to TASM. It was definitely weighed down by both the shadow of the Raimi movies, and the interference from the studio. If Marc Webb had complete control of the entire story, then the franchise would definitely have kept going strong. On another note, something to take into account is how TASM seemed to be heavily inspired by the Ultimate Comics - Ben's talk about Richard's philosophy was ripped straight out of the comic panels - Robo Rhino - Conspiracy involving Peter's parents - Telling his love interest his identity as Spider-man relatively early - Working with Doctor Connor's leading to a science experiment gone wrong - Peter and Harry being childhood friends because their dad's worked together is very similar to Peter and Eddie in those comics - Developing his suit and web-shooters in the basement - Electro's blue design - The Green Goblin created with the same formula that gave Peter his powers - Spider coming from Oscorp (I believe the original comics from the 60's just had it come from a public science exhibit) - Being very destructive when he first got his powers, even having an incident with Flash and basketball (the comics had him accidentally break Flash's hand, as well as join the basketball team until he learned responsibility)
There is no "real" definite version of Spider-Man because there's always reboots and new canons being written. His motives and personality change according to the environment (but mostly writers) his stories take place in
Lol, finally!, someone who appreciates Spider-Man Back when I was younger, when I first saw the opening scene for The amazing Spider-Man 2 swinging through the city I immediately thought “Yep, this is it, this is my favourite movie”
Just to point out, Tom’s Peter does have a bit of a temper other than dismissing his classmates. He purposely wrecks Flash’s dads car with a set of bikes, knocks Flash out with a slap in their tour bus, insults Star-Lord’s favorite movie, taunts the Prowler after leaving him stuck to his car. Downside is that unlike Andrew, it only gets more shown whenever he is being Spider-Man while Andrew’s Peter has that edge.
Amazing content as always. I personally am a bigger fan of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man but it would be nice to see some more layers of the character explored like with Andrew Garfield’ version
Andrew was the absolute best Peter and Spider-man. He evolves into a better person, through being increasingly responsible. It was perfect (outside of the plot of TASM 2)
I’ve really hated both of The Amazing Spider-Man movies for a long time, but like your videos on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, I feel like I understand fans of those movies a lot more. And honestly, I might even give the first Amazing Spider-Man movie another shot. Thanks for dishing out quality ass content regularly.
Just remember not to compare Andrew to Tobey, just think of it as his own interpretation of the character. If you can do that then I think you'll like it just fine.
i honestly don’t care because i like each and every spider man for different reasons and you guys can like any version but some fanboys won’t allow people to have favorites
After watching people on the internet argue about Spider-Man since at least 2012, it's just so refreshing to hear from people who really get it. Even in the comics, Spider-Man struggles with his role as a real-life-Marvel-mascot, because all of those things that make him a great character don't translate well to selling Hostess Fruit Pies, but it seems like movies make that poor-fitting role even worse. He's just not a natural action-hero type in the way that studios tend to make action movies now. Webb's movies were hobbled by a lot of problems, but they mostly got Peter and Garfield's take was as close to perfect as anyone could ask. (Or maybe part of the reason Webb's movies were so uneven is that the scripts and producers didn't quite know what to do with Peter Parker.)
Just like any character every version is different and one isn't better simply because it is more accurate to the original run. I like Spiderman and there should be some core elements that remain the same with each version, but I like that they are different.
One of the BEST Spider-man analysis videoes I have ever seen, you have really outdone yourself! I don't know how to put my feelings into words, but everything you said in the video is what I have been wanting others to understand. I don't know what to say other than, thank you, thank you for putting this video out into the world. Thank you.
Literally right after I asked you to make this video, you released it lol. Love your content man, Andrews' Spidey is so underappreciated. I do think you should have mentioned Ditko along with Stan Lee though, since both contributed heavily to Peters' personality traits.
I swear, when it comes to some things, Leo is just the voice in my head to explain why I love Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman. And now he’s gonna do Punisher. Love it!
Ok halfway through the video and I love the narrator... its this guy who truly receives this movie the way Marc Webb intended it! This dood dosent have any biased opinions and actually really understands who spiderman is UNLIKE 99 percent of the fandom shitting on this series! ITS TRUE! This series got spidey/ Peter right! It's been a decade of people lieing to themselves by falling for others' opinions as to how these movies are bad, while not making the effort to get to know what spiderman/ Peter really are by DEFINITION!
Andrew deserves to be everyone's favorite. He just embodies the spirit of the character so effortlessly, because he loves Spiderman so much. You can argue all you want but he's the most accurate on-screen Spiderman we've ever gotten. Andrew is and will always be THE Spiderman! 🕷
@@katevictoria3313 He's my main reason for wanting to watch NWH too! Can't wait to see him. I'm just praying he won't be a Tom Holland variant 💀worst nightmare lmao
This is why I adore Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, he put through all of his heart and soul into the role and defines him what makes Spider-Man special and relatable in our lives.
I really hope we get to see Andrew return as his Spider-Man in No Way Home, as well as Tobey of course, that'd be phenomenal, and its crazy to think that we might get to see them again as both Spider-Man in less than 2 months from now
The thing is, Raimi focused on the tragic side of spider-man and built on that alone. Still created a masterpiece and we still got the spider-man feel. This is why my favorite movies are the raimi movies but my favorite individual spider-man will always be Andrew. Watch the spectacular spider-man and the ps4 spider-man and you'll realize Andrew is by far the most similar to them, he matches their charm, wit and fighting style. Even as a fighter, Andrew was the most "spidery" cause he showed the springy, quick movements and actually properly used his webs in combat. he truly fought like a spider. Tobey was more like a brawler. As for Tom....hes Ironman JR...im kidding., Tom got the naive and rookie spider-man down to the dot but his major major flaw as a character was that it felt like he always wanted to get out of ironman's shadow, which is annoying because Spider-man was literally the first teenager to not be in the shadow of another older hero.
I didn't expect the original comics to hot so close to home, I remember when i was bullied but a few years later I got a growth spurt and while the people I had a grudge with had already went elsewhere, the anger from that time never went away so whenever someone gave me a reason I would push back harder than what was reasonable and pretty much liked it.
I loved Spiderman as a kid in the 90s, and the Raimi films will always have a special place in my heart for being pure wish fulfillment to have an actual modern live action Spiderman film for the first time ever. Also, Spiderman 2 with Doc Ock is my 2nd favorite Spiderman movie (1st is Into the Spiderverse). That said, I was never much of a fan of Tobey's portrayal. It wasn't bad, but it certainly lacked something which I couldn't quite nail until I watch this video. Tobey's Peter leaned in too much into the nerd aspect of the character, and it felt like a caricature. He barely made jokes as well, either as Peter or Spiderman. And when he did make jokes, it almost always felt flat.
@@peter_parker62 They are memed for their corniness and their charm. Any new movies tried to pull that shit today and it would fall flat. Some of it really didn't aged well.
I like the first amazing spiderman film more than homecoming. So its nice to see others not just like but love this version because everything you just said is exactly how i felt
I don't particularly care for for ASM movies, but their portrayal of Spider-Man himself was on the money. I still think Spectacular Spider-Man represents the best interpretation of the character in non-comic form. He goes through all of the growth that Peter does in the ASM comics, but in a very streamlined but satisfying manner. The only one that compares is Spider-Man PS4. He doesn't quite have the megative impulses, but it's clearly still there since Otto, someone who is arrogant, petty and angry, serves as a direct foil for Peter, what Peter would be had he made the wrong choices, and you still see that conflict between self-sacrifice and his selfish desires toward the end of the game. It more reflects Peter further along in his growth (8 years specifically). I hope we see a little more personal stories for future Tom Holland films more in line with Homecoming, but less innocent Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Allow his character flaws to reveal themselves as a young adult in college.
I believe you have a destiny to be a great voice actor or narrator. You're one of those people that I can happily listen to reading the phone book. But then you also write dopeshit like this script and i think perhaps you'll have many great destinies. Plus great work ethic!
I definitely forget myself sometimes, that Peter Parker is actually a bully. Beneath the jokes and low blows, he genuinely is a jerk to people he doesn’t like or if he’s in a crap mood. He still gets stepped over and he lashes out when things don’t go his way. We’ve seen it in almost all Spider-Man comics. One example from Ultimate is when Wolverine and Peter switched bodies but when he got his own body back not only did peter cuss out Wolverine, but began to make almost even racist remarks towards the whole of X-men. Ik the Ultimate universe in itself is Edgy, but Ultimate Spider-Man was a lot of people’s introduction and was a huge hit as well.
This video was solid, and you've given me a lot of food for thought about the Andrew Garfield movies and his interpretation of Spider-Man. My only quibble is this: Your essay locks Peter Parker/Spider-Man into a static interpretation based on his traits as a teenager. All of the defining elements you cite are rightly parts of his personality _when he was a teenager_ , specifically during the first few years of his published stories. You haven't really taken into account that Parker evolved over time. There were a few comics that were published after Lee left the series, after all!
Most of those personality traits carried over to now though. The only major difference modern comic Peter and the original is that he's not really a jerk anymore, which we see in these movies; Peter's a dick in most of TASM1, but is much more like the friendly neighborhood hero we're used to in the sequel.
I'm going to respectfully disagree that most of those personality traits carried over to his present. Sure, Peter's still funny and flirty and smart...but him not being a jerk is due more to him not having an identity as a _victim_ anymore. Somewhere 5-10 years along on his timeline, Peter's lived some real life and come through it, and as Spider-Man, he's highly regarded and respected by his peers. In ways, he's even seen as a veteran hero and a role model to younger heroes. His detractors are in the minority, and even Jameson isn't taken seriously. I find it telling of the character's fans, and MARVEL, that they're so reluctant to allow the character to be an adult. Do we prefer Spidey as a jerk? If so, it's not really his fault that he's got such perpetual bad luck. That's on us!
@@MarcelLWalker Did you read all of my comment? I literally say that Peter is no longer a jerk, because he's a fully grown adult, not a hormonal, angsty teenager. I never said I want him to go back to that (I hate when Marvel tried to reverse all his development with One More Day), I'm just explaining that he was a lot less likeable when he was a teenager, and we see that in these movies; after all, when is Peter a jerk in TASM2?
@@danielhart7435 Not the biggest jerk ever, but he was still a jerk, which is the entire point of the 'great responsibilty' lesson. He's pretty selfish in the first few comics.
Damn, I always knew my boi Garfield-man was the best. had the first one on DVD as a wee lad, watched it almost constantly. I could recite the script by heart. While I can agree that holland may be objectively the best, he never really stuck with me like Andrew did. Andy Gorfeeld will always have a special, spider-man shaped place in my heart, not only as the first spider-man I grew up with, but as hero in general that I grew up with. 😊
Dude I love how different our ideas of Peter Parker are. Peter is definitely a trickster with bad luck and temper. But in my head, he's nowhere near "happy go lucky"
This is a very interesting version of Spider-man and, as I look back at the comics, absolutely how he was portrayed. But, personally, I think that the other version (if you simplify it, Raimi's version) holds up as well. It's just a massive shame that main stream media has leaned away from actually depicting this version of Spiderman. At least make him a different Spider-man in the multiverse in the comics. Give us another rendition of a movie Spider-man like that.
I just love your video essays. Literally all my thoughts about my favorite hero are so perfectly translated on your channel, while also greatly enhancing my love for Spider-Man. You are absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!
I feel like if Sony didn’t mess with TASM2 (like they did with Spider-Man 3), we could have had one of the best super hero trilogy ever. I’m the first movie, he’s a kid out for blood basically and just scratches the surface of being a hero at the end. Say his development is very similar to TASM2, by the end, he would truly become a person we could label as a super hero, really entraining what his character uncle taught him. And 3 could have potentially been about him at his ‘prime’ and basically being tested to his limit, to see if he can stick to his uncle’s teachings and when’s dad. Basically a coming of age for a super hero.
Thank you so much! I've been loving your comics x movies critics since you started. Because of you, now I'm reading Spider-Man comics from the start and seeing panels I just read on your videos has been awesome!
These Spidey essays are DOPE. So many are Raimi shills. Raimi made GREAT films with a GREAT character - he’s just not the definitive Spider-Man. I’ve always loved Garfield, and The Amazing Spider-Man is one of my favorite Spider-Man movies for all the reasons that you stated here.
THANK YOU. I've been saying this for literally YEARS. Garfield is the most faithful-to-the-original-Ditko/Lee concept of Peter Parker out of all the on-screen Spideys.
It's cause the Raimi films over emphasized Peter as a pathetic love struck geek instead of an every man who grows beyond his nerd phase. The crux of Peter Parker's character that modern writers struggle with is that Peter's journey is about growth and not being a bullied teen or remaining a teenager. Peter Parker is the first superhero that actually grows up throughout his comics. But the films, especially Raimi's trilogy don't let him grow beyond being a geek. That's why Spider-Man 3 didn't work. The symbiote story was about Peter embracing his dark side and him having to grow beyond the darkness.
THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING PETER PARKER - I get so annoyed with how they portray Peter now because it isn't him Andrew Garfield truly was the closest movie version. Ultimate spider-man comics did a great job of portraying Peter's angst. I remember reading those comics as an angsty teenager and there is a line where Nick Fury tells him he gets it, he is a teen and has raging hormones and doesn't even now why he's blowing up... made me realize I was doing the same. All in all- love your videos man. Been watching for awhile but don't comment. Keep it up.
1. Well, this is a pleasant surprise Andrew Garfield himself must see; in any case, I guess Sony wasn't lying when they said that Webb's films were bringing Peter Parker back to basics. 2. I think something we forget is that, though Raimi tried and failed to walk the line of preserving Stan Lee's vision and having his own vision incorporated, everything since the Raimi trilogy has fallen into its shadow because Raimi had a vision that rivaled and drowned out Stan Lee's lest the true villain is in fact the tests of time.
I just love Andrew the way he did play the spiderman and the chemistry b/w Gwen and Peter is just great, the theme song and the web Swing is just another level awesome. For me the amazing Spider-Man is the best spiderman and yes I'm baised. And last thing since multidimensional is a thing now so can they give Andrew his 3rd movie it would be so cool 🔥
Wow, you actually made me reconsider TASM; thank you. I think the Parker Triangle is also exhibited nicely in the 1994 Cartoon; the Peter Parker I grew up with was such a loveable asshole haha. Thing is though, Maguire seems better represented in the games than in the films. He complains more, he quips more, he seems more on point with the triangle, if only a little. Ironically, I found the best display of his irreverence was in the Spider-Man 3 game, where he converses with characters like DeWolff: A far-cry from the dork in the respective film.
As Much As I Love Tobey, Andrew Got Everything That Peter Parker Was. I Always Said That Garfield Is Early Steve Ditko Spidey, 90s Spidey, And Mostly And Certaintly, 1610 Ultimate Spider-Man.
I'm so glad I'm able to watch the video. Ever since a traumatic experience in my life, my life and the way I see it has been very different. I'd say for the most part I've healed from it but now I'm looking for my identity and the one question that plagues me to this day is whether I'm still me if I'm playing a character I want to be. Very weird question. This channel and many like it have helped me find more of myself and helps me build that person to this day. I guess I realized that I didn't really know myself at all, and now I'm in the middle of finally being able to build my personality. That's where it's getting complicated for me because I'm to earnest to really feel good about the act because I feel like I'm lying. Anyway, this video helped with that question.
I'm so glad you made this. Maguire is my nostalgia but I'm sick of telling people that Garfield is the best adapted Spidey/Peter. And people saying Maguire is the best Peter and Garfield is the best Spidey are imo wrong too
Spider-Man isn't like Batman. Peter Parker and Spider-Man are pretty much the same person. Bruce Wayne is almost nothing like Batman. It's a comparison that doesn't make sense to me.
I think if Sony hadn't held such a clutch around the Andrew Spider-Mans then it would be looked at as better than the Tobey ones. And I'd rather watch either of those instead of the MCU ones. I'm still excited for no way home tho

Proof that some Spider-Man movie fans haven’t even read the comics: i saw one guy say Andrew was a bad Spider-Man because he didn’t save Gwen…
Even though that literally happens in the comics.
@@Corey_Tenderson Then by that guy's logic Comic's Spider-Man is also a bad Spider-Man because he also did not save Gwen.

I honestly wouldn't have complained if Andrew was the MCU's Spider-Man. Holland is a great actor, but I prefer the themes and ideas of Andrew's first movie over anything with MCU Peter.

Nice to see some proper love given to TASM. It was definitely weighed down by both the shadow of the Raimi movies, and the interference from the studio. If Marc Webb had complete control of the entire story, then the franchise would definitely have kept going strong.
On another note, something to take into account is how TASM seemed to be heavily inspired by the Ultimate Comics
- Ben's talk about Richard's philosophy was ripped straight out of the comic panels
- Robo Rhino
- Conspiracy involving Peter's parents
- Telling his love interest his identity as Spider-man relatively early
- Working with Doctor Connor's leading to a science experiment gone wrong
- Peter and Harry being childhood friends because their dad's worked together is very similar to Peter and Eddie in those comics
- Developing his suit and web-shooters in the basement
- Electro's blue design
- The Green Goblin created with the same formula that gave Peter his powers
- Spider coming from Oscorp (I believe the original comics from the 60's just had it come from a public science exhibit)
- Being very destructive when he first got his powers, even having an incident with Flash and basketball (the comics had him accidentally break Flash's hand, as well as join the basketball team until he learned responsibility)
There is no "real" definite version of Spider-Man because there's always reboots and new canons being written. His motives and personality change according to the environment (but mostly writers) his stories take place in
Lol, finally!, someone who appreciates Spider-Man
Back when I was younger, when I first saw the opening scene for The amazing Spider-Man 2 swinging through the city I immediately thought “Yep, this is it, this is my favourite movie”

Those who fight it become monsters, those who live with it become greater. That is beautiful and I can relate.
Ive been trynna preach this for the longest

I disagree about the jokes part. Because almost every quip by Tobey has been turned into a meme.

I've always loved Andrew's Spider-Man. So happy to see that he's finally getting the praise he deserves.
Amazing Spider-Man 2 should have been a tv show with all the subplots it had

@@commanderspyder5432 Peter wasn’t even much of a jerk for real.

Tobey in Spider-Man 3 checks all the marks in the Peter Triangle lmao

Keep it up.
As a New Yorker, Tom Holland’s “Queens accent” is super non-regional. Andrew’s the only one who tried to do the accent but it sounded extremely weird.
