  • Curio rowleyanus, formerly known as both Senecio rowleyanus and Kleinia rowleyana, is commonly known as string of beads, string of pearls, string of peas....for its iconic green beads, which has been quite a temperamental plant for some of us. It takes the spotlight as #235 of "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

I was talking about this very thing with my daughter recently. I have an orchid cactus that hadn't bloomed in years and I had a talk with it and asked it very kindly if it would bloom for me and it did! It was covered in beautiful blooms for a very long time!

I had this plant in front of a south facing window, with all my other succulents i tought it would thrive but it kept drying so bad and loosing stems !! I placed it in front of my eastern facing window so it gets really less light but it thrives !!!
I have to water it a lot and often , even in winter, surely because it is in a little terracota pot with very draining soil.
I really don t understand this plant but i love it 😊

I started my small collection of houseplants in April this year (thanks to Jenna marbles video tbh). Im in love with all the color and growth they produce, but I have lost two plants in the process: a succulent and this string of pearl. I probably would do better now since I understand light and watering better, but string of pearl was a difficult one for me as a complete beginner. I fell in love with it when many plant books listed this plant, but the care for it is like a picky succulent in my opinion.
Watch me, I'll probably get a string of pearl this coming spring lol

I ❤ that you suggest an immediate repot upon purchase! Most "influencers" warn against this, but I find my success rate correlates with how soon I get them out of the plastic pots. The few occasions I've left plants in their nursery pots for a month or longer, they die back or completely implode. I now think of immediate repotting as a taboo secret that rarely fails me.

I had my houseplants since I was 6 years old. I had everything that you can possibly imagine and plants that people had never seen blooming bloomed? I'm not sure what gave me the knowledge to take care of my plants but I just did it and sometimes I knew the names and sometimes I didn't like my Hoya my peperomia The String of Pearls but I didn't use the names like you do. When I hit my late twenties I moved into a house that was out in the country and it was heated with wood stoves and as I told somebody on another Channel I had gotten my Hoya from just a leaf in a styrofoam cup for a nickel at my kindergarten school Fair. They had things for sale and there was just a bunch of plants and there was that leaf and I don't know why I wanted it but I begged my mom for a nickel and it ended up being the best Hoya ever! But one night it got exceptionally cold in the room where my plants were in the fire had gone out and the person that would normally take care of that did not and my plants froze and I lost pretty much everybody. I was in my 40's. So I don't have any of my Historical house plants left but I know somebody who does have cuttings that are huge plants now so I can recover 5 or so. Not my original Hoya but one that had been in my family for many many years. My original one bloomed non-stop always. I remember being a teen and as the flowers would be ending they get a strange sent to them and I would get in trouble for not cleaning the cat box and go from that sweet smell to a smell that people thought was something else. But I loved it that plant like it was a person or an animal maybe more. Hopefully one day when I have moved into a better place I'm kind of in a temporary situation for a long time LOL but when I have a better window better Windows. I shall beg for cuttings of my old plants! and then of course I have all my new ones including this String of Pearls and it's small but it's doing really well it's a happy little thing it got a jumper have a plant I can't remember that jumped in with it that I've got to get out because it's prolific and making babies and I don't want it to overtake my String of Pearls I just haven't done it yet. that wasn't said very smoothly but you got the idea. Sorry I can't see the words I'm using voice to text. So if something is exceptionally odd just do your best to figure out what I was trying to say the phones are being very strange today!

@@Englandmw this is too sweet! I'm disabled and I'm having problems so I use voice to text. And mostly do this when I have horrible insomnia and have been up for days and not eating. So I get criticized often for rambling or sounding like an idiot when I've actually highly educated and apparently have a a high IQ!? Whatever that means because how do you measure that? I got by on Hands-On rather than books when I went to school to become a doctor of many different things including naturopathic health. I can help people and I can help animals. Oddly enough I just met a man he didn't give me the creeps at all and I usually I'm pretty good at that. It ends up he's a writer and he'd like to write my story because I have some pretty intense things that have gone on. I thought it would be better to make them into individual stories rather than taking everything and stuffing it and one book. If you truly mean this and aren't being sarcastic because I have been insulted a lot. What do you think of that? Breaking everything up into smaller stories which have plenty of details to make a book. I would appreciate his help because I'm not a writer and I don't always can be a message as well as far as punctuation improper use of words even though I graduated with high grades. Certainly not in math or writing lol. If you really mean this thank you so much. When I talk about anything in my mother it's definitely from the heart. That may be the appeal. Some of my stories are just horrific some are beautiful though they end sad! I've had an amazing amount of life and 50 + years almost 60.
Again if you're saying this truthfully thank you so much!🌱🐸💜

The fragrance reminds me of the clove pink smellI of Dianthus plumarius cvs. I have it growing on a windowsill facing due south for the winter. In the summer I move it over to the top of my bookcase to the side of the window. I guess I'll be taking the label out of the pot now to erase Senecio and re-write Curio!!

Thank you for another great video! I bought this plant and propagated it successfully so now I have a mom and baby plus I potted one for a friend. I never knew about the blooms so maybe I haven’t been fertilizing enough? (I’m happy with pearls) After listening to you I think I may pull back a bit from the window and water a bit less although we heat with wood so that part can be confusing. We keep it toasty warm so I’m not sure my plants know what season it is.

  • @Arokhantos

I would just let it dry out fully and then soak it all wet and keep it even in full sun if it can handle it, if it does't survive its probably cos soil mix balance is all wrong, it should hold enough for plant to survive and not go insane on having to water once a week if possible, i have 50 plants i never water once a week except during summer with my pilea and my spider plants and hanging pothos.

I bought a lg plant, it died right away. I got a sm one for replacement...I am growing it as I do my african violets...on a wick, & using my home made violet soil...peat moss, compost & pearlite. it is working. it's very healthy, & growing fairly fast. it's confusing as everything I read or watched on you tube, says not too much water, & dry out before watering. Plus fertilizing like you said, but I also fertilize w/my violet fertilizer every time I water. it stays moist also. So, is it living on borrowed time? it is so healthy. it's also under grow lights. There's no dead or dying on it either. I have a cute hanging pot to put it in. no hole in the bottom. So I plan on putting it in a sm plastic pot to set in the new ceramic one, above the water in the bottom. Have you ever heard of this before? Any advice?

But I know what is mine when one of mine was not in a proper place to get light on top I just took one of the long strings and twirled it back into the pot in a circle and sprinkle Just A Pinch of soil. Just something for it to touch but not drown my other ones. And it grabbed on and things shot out of it like crazy and it filled up the top of it again. Plus it made more strings falling down.

    I’m terrified to repot mine.
It wasn’t trailing when I bought it, and after being in south window this summer, it’s trailing and very full on top.
Are the roots typically shallow? I know it grows as a ground cover in it’s natural habitat. I plan to pot up one inch depending on what the roots look like now.

Mine died soon after i repotted it. This and Burros Tail are incredibly tricky. I think it's always best to buy them in an oversized pot to begin with.

      I found a cool square terra-cotta planter, but I’m literally scared it’ll die...😳🥴
My borros tail was easy-ish. I wish I didn’t gift it at the end of summer.

@@k.m.7015 If you have a garden centre or a nursery near by. May take the plant to them. I think they would be more than happy to help you with repotting the plant.

@@brandimartin5229 I thankfully found a few that were in oversized pots and doing well, if i manage to keep them alive they won't need any repotting for several years.

So all week you’ve been doing plants i currently have in my own collection, specifically the plants I keep in my room. I want to know how you put a camera in my house. It’s uncanny the past 6 plants. Now if you do Chasmanthium latifolium (I’ve never seen anyone else keep one indoors..) I’m going to have to sweep my room for your hidden camera.

Can NOT keep these alive to save my life! I’ve tried the pearls and string of bananas with no luck. I’ve tried everything and watched some many video ps and advice articles. I just can not keep them alive. Bought a beautiful established string of bananas and it lasted a while but it still died.

You should soak them and then let them totally dry out. Feeling the weight of the pot does help. In the winter I keep it totally dry in an unheated room ( below 10 degrees but no Frost obviously with my other cacti ) This really should do the trick

I believe the water and soil are key, i ised to be like you, i killed more than 3 before i caught on, top tips that nobody says: dont repot it when you bring it home!! And dont for the love of all thats holy use cactus soil on this plant! It likes a fast draining soil but you need a general type of soil that can hold moisture for a while, it does not like dry soil at all. I kept mine from the shop untill i was fairly certain the soil was drying and put water sparingly, it keeps growing now but i still keep my eye on it non stop.

70% ethanol in a small spray bottle, spray plant thoroughly and leave overnight then wash just as throughly the next morning, all bugs will be gone;)
