    The flowers smell Heavenly it's like a combination of cloves and cinnamon! And they smells much much stronger at night when you walk past them. My String of Pearls bloomed was to flowers. I didn't take them off I just enjoy the scent. I know my string of bananas that I cut back and tried to propagate which was unsuccessful thought much Fuller in the pot because I forced the growth from the tip to the roots. I just posted a video about back to videos about my succulent collection. And my string of bananas in 5 months is now 5 ft long so I guess I'm doing something right. You are so right about not watering very often! It wasn't until I quit watering when I watered my houseplants that my succulents started to do well including my String of Pearls

    In California and other coastal regions where 'Lilly of the Nile' (agapanthus major or minor) grow, these are a delight to see flowering (4:31) because their blooms are a micro version of the larger landscape (also a nice undcented eye-appeal add-in to pomanders). Because they hand well, some folks use them in memorial arrangements with flower wreaths below the pearls' stemware planters. Also, these desert plants are great, on borders or corner pedestals for keeping patios free of fly, moth, or mosquito pests.

    Harli, thanks for the video. I always wanted a String of Pearls. I never saw any locally, so I ordered it online. It was shipped to me very moist. It started to root rot in days. I contacted the company and sent pictures. They replaced the plant and again came really moist. I took it out of the growing pot and sat it on a folded paper towel. I kept changing the wet paper towel and replacing with a dry one. I never watered the plant and 3 weeks later, the samething. I gave up on the plant.

As I like to buy them small and I have plenty of pots. I have seen them at Lowe's and HD early in the Spring. Not so much now. The bananas looked better than the pearls. Hari I need serious help with my sting of pearls 😭 I already rotted my peperomia ruby cascade. The leafs on top of soil rotted and now my string of pearls and my string of tears/raindrops are showing the same signs. Some of the beads on the top of soil are getting mushy and deteriorating! Have I over watered ? My sting of bananas are doing great though so I’m confused because I water all three at the same time and the same amount. Have I put the soil too high up in the pot hence causing the top pearls to set in the moist soil and rot?

    I have a plant that is similar to string of pearls but has a different shape of pearls and thicker vines are very long draped over the pot. I have it in a hanging pot. What could be its offical name? I love it and it is attractive. My daughters both want a plant of it so I propagated it so they can have a plant just like it. It is easy care and did very well outside this summer at 108 degrees. I live in Tucson Arizona. I had to water heavy because of the hot days. I always thought succulent plants did not need so much water, but because the hot days would dry up the water. Thank you for your help.

    Can I use a general houseplant fertilizer 2-2-2 on cacti and succulents or is a succulent specific fertilizer advisable?

    • @HarliG
      @HarliG  6 років тому

      I would definitely advise a succulent specific fertilizer! I just have always played it safe that way.

    I had a string of pearls which when i bought it, it looked fantastic, it was blooming and everything!! I brought it home, repotted and it slowly sat in my room DYING which was really upsetting but my theory is that it had root rot. I bought it on clearance during a week where we had a tonne of rain and they had them outside so although i never personally watered it myself i think it was doomed before i even bought it. I'll make sure next time to CHECK THE SOIL before i buy to make sure im not setting myself up for another failure.

    I cant understand why mine wont grow properly, I did water it twice a month and then once a month and they shriveled and even though i watered them down they wont be as plump as the first time I bought them. I cant seem to be able to have the spherical characteristic look that it should have. What I am doing wrong??? :(

    Awesome video Harli! There should be law that requires people to watch this prior to purchasing a SOP. 😁💡 My neighbor recently asked me to look at her struggling SOP & Snake Plants. I ended up confiscating her watering can! The watering can is the preferred weapon of plant serial killers everywhere.

    What does it mean if the new growth is smaller than original pearls? I have it in front of a SW window, water 1x every 2-3 weeks

    • @HarliG
      @HarliG  6 років тому

      They should get bigger as time passes. They definitely start out a lot smaller! If it is a consistent problem that doesn't correct itself over time, I would say to feed it a bit more than normal! Just make small adjustments to the care routine until you see progress (:

    I have my SoP for about one moth. Then, last weekend I saw they were scattered all over the place in the morning (I put mine in my terrace). My neighbor's cats played with my SoP during the night! The cats chewed the pearls and cuts the string all over the place (not to mention the messy media and the broken pot). My SoP is dying right now. I am so sad. Trying to save them... hope they manage to survive T_T

  • @Laushinka
    @Laushinka 5 років тому

    Great tips! How long did it take for the cuttings to significantly root? And is there a minimum length of cuttings? I just got a pot of these and they look dying.. The stems near the crown are thin and dry, and I want to save the rest by propagation instead..

    • @HarliG
      @HarliG  5 років тому

      Yes. The minimum length kind of depends... you of course, want it long enough to be able to remove some foliage from a couple nodes. As a general rule of thumb, I try to keep my cuttings around 3-6 inches in most cases! It took 2-3ish weeks to get long enough roots to transfer to soil!

    Hi I am new to the plant world and have a string of pearls being delivered very soon! I keep hearing about people having bad experiences with these and dying pretty quickly. Im try to learn all that I can so I can take the best care of mine once it is here. Do you mind sharing the name of the fertilizer and soil that you are using? I cant make out what you stated in the video bc I am not quite familiar with these terms just yet. :)

      Omg yay! I am so happy you got one! Just be sure to keep it away from temp fluctuation & away from any drafts. I do have mine indoors, near a West facing window a few feet back. I water it when the soil is about half way dry! Which color variety did you get?

    So my SOP is recovering from mealybugs that can with them when I bought the plant. The new growth however has like a tacky feeling along the vine! Is this normal or should I be spraying with insecticide again? I don't see any mealybugs and it's only on the new growth!

    • @HarliG
      @HarliG  5 років тому +1

      Yes! They do get sticky like that for some reason!

    I wonder if I could repot my string of turtles using the same method... The vines on that are so delicate I've been afraid to try but it's way outgrowing it's pot.

    • @evicaf4e
      @evicaf4e 4 роки тому

      You can, but the way i propagate string of pearls is - I take the beads/balls and put the stem directly in soil.. the water propagation didn't work out for me. 2. I am trying to make my string of turtles bushier, because it has only 4 stems growing in lenght but the top of the pot is naked. So I just put this 4 piceses in the pot on the top of the soil (they are not hanging anymore) so it will be bushy at the top and them will start falling down... and for that type of plant is better to water it from the bottom.

    I don’t know what to do 🤷🏻‍♀️! I keep hearing contrasting advice on this plant. Mine was happy in the bathroom for awhile and I was only watering once a month because I was afraid of overwatering. But then it started to shrivel so I watered it a bit more but it kept shriveling so I moved it out of the bathroom to a space with more light and it’s still dying. I re potted that one to terra cotta right away but I’ve also been told to leave it in the nursery pot! 🤦🏻‍♀️

    I have an unrelated question, I bought a beautiful flowering Spanish lavender at the 99cent store, I watered it and put it in the bathroom, I noticed a few days later it was drying, I cut off all the dried stems and watered it again. It was still drying, I read the little card and it said it prefers to be dry so I put it outside on my window sill but it doesn't look happy and still drying. What do I do?

      I am unsure of the specific type of lavender & I am honestly probably not the best person to as about lavender because I accidentally killed one a few months back :( But I would move it farther away from the window & leet it dry between waterings and see if that works!
