    i like the way the book ended it better... dimmesdale died because of his guilt. like it literally ate away at him until he died.

      i dunno. them killing him in the end seems a little anti-climactic...

      *****
      How is it a dumb cliche if it was written in 1850?

    I guess this is supposed to be about the movie, because half of this stuff isn't part of the book.

    I'm not a fan of a good amount of books that were required reading in school.
    However "The Scarlet Letter" is really good and I have a fondness for it.

      I know it! One wonders if the writer even read the novel!

    Nathaniel Hawthorne was related to an actual Salem Witch trial judge so he changed the spelling of his last name to ease the burden of his guilt. A lot of houses and cemetaries from the timeperiod are still in Salem. Today, there are around 3,000 registered witches living in Salem. Not sure why they have to register...

    I've actually been to Hawthorne's birth place in Salem & visited the famous House of Seven Gables back in 2011. A must see for Hawthorne/literary fans.

    You can tell that they based this off of the movie.... not the book. In this video, WatchMojo makes the point that Dimmesdale's death was a punishment by the townspeople and that he accepts this... but he died on his own on the scaffold... He was not hung like how the movie would make it seem.

    What are examples of unheimlich in this book. I need to know. Please let me know. unheimlich is when normal things are first shown normal but as time grow they become extremely unordinary. For example, a dog on a walk then turns to a giant monster and starts eating people. Thanks

    This is a poorly researched video...half of what's in this video was NOT in the book...the clips from the 1995 movie also do not follow the book. This is an awful video, please watch the Sparknotes video instead if you are needing better clarification of the books plot after you have read the actual book. Do not base your knowledge of the book off of this poor video.

    I love the fact that it tries to teach women not to cheat. 90% of divorces is because women cheat. The other 10% is because women nag at thier husbands so much that it drives them to cheat.
    Word of advice, get a prenuptial agreement.

    • @elentariv104
      @elentariv104 10 років тому +7

      Okay, I'm just going to ignore those false statistics for a moment because you seem a bit bitter and ignorant. So, I'll just reply to the first sentence.
      The story wasn't trying to teach women not to cheat. Implying so is a bit ridiculous. It wasn't really a message about infidelity at all. And also, Hester was under the belief that her husband was dead (seriously, read the book!). It is a story DEPICTING how someone in her position would've been treated at that point in history. In other words, it exposed historical problems in the same fashion that Huckleberry Finn did. As an example, Huckleberry Finn used racist language and situations to expose the severity of historical racism, rather than promote racism. Erasure only causes ignorance- the same ignorance you seem to possess, based on your statements.
      Hawthorne wrote Hester as a strong protagonist- even despite being ostracized by her surrounding society. If he was trying to convey any message by writing The Scarlet Letter, it was most likely a condemnation of Puritan society.
