I don't know how I missed this video, but here I am. My favorite piece of trivia about the 1985 movie, is that when Charlotte and Eleanor are sitting on the hillside overlooking Florence, they are gossiping about the plot to Forster's Where Angels Fear to Tread, which Merchant Ivory also made into a film a few years later. :) "And did she really marry this Italian?" "In the church at Monteriano. A youth. Ten years younger than herself." "Oh, Eleanor!"
My daughters took me to see this in a small movie theater in Berkeley for Mother’s Day when it first came out. It was not at that time considered to be “main-stream” so we had to purposely travel to an “art” movie theater! When we left I knew I had just seen my favorite movie ever, replacing the wonderful, African Queen (which still remains my second favorite!)
Foster can't help but set up situations in which it would be the most natural thing for two male characters to fall tenderly into each other's arms! The flip side of this is that whenever a male and a female character kiss, it feels forced and jarring. This is equally true of the book and the 1985 film. It's amazing to see the author himself wrestling with exactly the type of social suppression he's attempting to analyse in his novel.
That scene makes me want to go find a place to swim freely. The sad part is that most men, well, at least where I live, don't want to do that. I don't know why. Over a hundred years ago, that's how you swam with your male buddies. It is no different than going to the gym locker room except you are in tune with nature. As humans, being naked is more than just taking a shower or intimacy. It is 100% normal to do a nude activity out in nature. Now, for me, if a woman is there, it would be my wife. But a loved one and best buddies/brothers are different so if I go for a swim with my friends with nothing on; it is meant for fun. Freedom is key. So men, stop being afraid to do this, DO IT!
Absolutely awesome review. The book is beautifully written and the movie is, as you mentioned, the version starring Helena Bonham Carter; who is the go-to girl for any period flick. Thank you for this!!
Helena was amazing in this movie. One of the all time great performances. So real, so vital, soooo cute. She was never as good after and then married that dreadful Burton guy. Also worth checking her out in Lady Jane and Hazard of Hearts, both early roles as well. The latter is a dreadful adaptation of a Barbara Cartland book but her performance is again illuminating.
Well, curiously enough Bonham Carter didn't like her early roles as they were too virginal. Later she'd find more quirky characters to play that better embody her personality. I reckon you're pulling a Cecil Vyse here :)
George Emerson is modeled after a close friend (and some say one-time lover) of EM Forster - Hugh Owen Meredith. Forster dedicated ARWAV to HOM. Clive Durham in Maurice is also modeled after him.
I first watched the 1985 film adaptation starring Helena Bonham-Carter and Julian Sands as Lucy & George before I purchased and then read the complete novel. I still remember how I wanted Lucy to choose George over Cecil.
At late 90s I needed to choose a novel and summarize it at a college phase. What happened next was I found a tape attached and presented in a libral way at library College.
This is my summer reading this year and it's honestly good and bad. It's split into two parts. Part one is honestly terrible (Lucy is an unsympathetic character, Charlotte's annoying, Mr Emerson is weird, Mr Beebe is a bit suspect, George is too 'sad boy'), but part two is one of the best things I've ever read (Lucy starts thinking for herself, Charlotte is more understandable, George is in full feminist glory, Cecil gets good character development, Freddy is hilarious).
Evreything is well done including that amazing cast, l own the VSH, Laser Dis DVD And a Blu-ray also the sound track of this film and I veiw tissue film often I also own Maucie the film in lazer dis . the book written by E M Forster the film by Merchant ivory production
It was clear to me that Cecil was a closeted homosexual, illegal in those times, so he didnt really love Lucy. He just saw her as a cover & was only interested in her as a beautiful object like a painting or a book. I think George was the only one that figured it out. In the novel it pointly says Cecil never married.
How come in all the top 10s you are doing, you are going sooo back in time, althought you are not of that age?Your retro age in music and cinema is the 80's
I think you asking for the them song playing from the beginningof the film , and that's Gianni Puccini (O Mio Babbino caro )sung by kini te Kanawa and (that kiss in an Italian poppy field ) is the other
That woman who was in Harry Potter looks exactly the same here as she did there, only her hair is blonde instead of grey. Unfortunate to look like an old woman even when you're young.
Having Maggie Smith and Judi Dench in the same film is sublime.

Also, HBC and Rupert Grave, who were both in this film, also starred in Where Angels Fear to Tread.
My favorite movie of all time!! I found it be about "passion" and "passion for life", the most important thing of all.
This is my favourite film off all time.. Love it.
Ditto :)
Northenstar13 me too. It's like a gift.
Yes indeed it is exquisite.
Same for me !

The swimming scene in the lake was hilarious

Helena Bonham Carter's great grandfather was Herbert H. Asquith, the prime minister for the last two years of the Edwardian era.
Some powerful performances from some fine British actors in the 1985 film, including a doll like, beautiful, young Helena BC!
My favorite film of all time! I go to sleep to this film each night. The theme music makes me total relaxed.
I had forgotten how much I loved this film. Brought back memories of when I worked in a small movie theater and ARWAV was showing for several months!
Daniel Day-Lewis is sooo amazing in this
He's amazing in everything, haha
I will never tire of this film; watched the first time in 1994 and have been a fan ever since...
"And I divine it, Charlotte. You had an adventure there." A great coded word of script
Perfectly cast movie. Fabulous acting. Unmatched music soundtrack. A must view.

One of the most romantic scenes in film, and people didn't have to take their clothes off.
Well, the three men did take off their cloths in it, for a summer swim. :)
Love how McGonagall is berating Bellatrix
The view of Helena would satiate me forever..................

A J No, that’s not in this movie (unless it’s in an adaptation I haven’t seen - the Merchant-Ivory version is the only one I’ve ever seen).
Maurice is just beautiful... painfully beautiful

I think you asking for the them song playing from the beginningof the film , and that's Gianni Puccini (O Mio Babbino caro )sung by kini te Kanawa and (that kiss in an Italian poppy field ) is the other
"Ch' il bel sogno di Doretta" from La Rondine by Puccini, is the song playing in the kissing scene--also sung by the great Kiri Te Kanawa.

Italy was not less repressive. Catholicism kept the country deeply repressed.

Maggie Smith was in her 50s when this movie came out, so not so young. In the Harry Potter films, she was in her seventies.
This must be boring movie to talk about. lol
