- Video by Norway's Kongsberg of a flight test of its Naval Strike Missile (NSM), basis of teh Joint Strike Missile under development for the F-35 JSF. Here the fire-and-forget missile is launched from land at the Pt Mugu, Calif., test range and is filmed by a chase aircraft as sea-slims a few feet above the Pacific, flying over an island to acquire and attack a target ship on the otther side. Kongsberg says this mission profile gave the NSM's imaging-infrared seeker just 1.5 seconds to acquire and identify the ship as its pre-programmed target.

It didn't miss. They were testing the delivery system, not the explosives. Had they loaded the missile with explosives, they could have had a massive explosion right above the deck right as it hit the container.
"Got your Cargo, now surrender"
Yes, but they should have filmed a final version of it better.
to everyone claiming it was a failure, it wasn't! It's a test missile so there was no warhead fitted which is why there was no explosion. And hitting where it did would've been a mission kill against an enemy warship. Consider that the structure on top of a ship is where radar and all sensors in addition to bridge and other command facilities are located, a hit there would completely disable a ship. Contrary to a close to waterline hit which could hit the water close to impact and do no damage and a hit there would not necessarily be a mission kill even though it might knock out engines, because radars and CnC is possibly still in operation the enemy can now return fire on you.
Now that is some serious sea skimming!
@MrPloopy83 The aim of this exercise was to see how fast it could acquire a target (as mentioned in the description). It had just 1.5 seconds to identify the target and it nailed it with deadly accuracy. It wasn't supposed to detonate etc.
I thought Kongsberg was a beer company
That's Carlsberg :D
Alcohol, babywear and anti ship missiles. And pretzels. Probably.
Yes...beers and missiles. :-0
Kongsberg - hits harder than you'd think!
@@CuthbertNibbles Carlsberg - _Probably_ hitting even harder
*damn, i think i've seen this cruise clip before :(
thought i was going to see it being shot down by an airplane..
Incredible distance, ridiculously low angle of attack, pinpoint accuracy. Damn, better get out of the water asap
@23Sirus23 You can see that the containers are stacked in a manner that resembles the profile of a warship's superstructure. Direct hit.
That part where it's just flying feet from the ocean surface...man, war is scary.
@madashell1200 Yes; its pretty normal for tests because it saves having to build an expensive new ship for each test. It also allows the container to be taken away afterwards for analysis.
Damn it looks low-flying :D
Was this test without warhead?
@JMartinsATV it hit the boat but it doesn't have explosives in it, it's an accuricy test
@TimbobJames It has no warhead to arm. Most warheads are armed by being fired, but most tests are done without explosives
@zero00tolerance I'm not an expert, but the missile flies much like the jet does. It is initially launched using solid rocket fuel, after that a mini jet turbine takes over. In essence, it's a jet-powered missile. As such, the aircraft is able to keep up and the missile can hit targets over 100 miles away.
@MPETE1976, looks like they want to keep re using the ship, so they have stacked some shipping containers on the deck to use as the target, pretty clever really
@Pangjunmin High speed rockets used to use a cordite based propellant that was smokeless. But most military rockets will be smokeless as smoke normally indicates an inefficient burn
@JMartinsATV it did hit, but the test missle did not have any explosives or the like in it. since it was a fire and forget missile test.
@memberHD you sir, are useful. Thank you for that intriguing insight :D
@MrPloopy83
It was a direct hit. The missile passed through because it was not deployed with a live warhead. In field practice, it would have exploded on impact
@korpse69 It knows the terrain ahead of it so if there was a mountain it could adjust its altitude. It flys low to avoid radar detection.
Well said.
@PotentialRoadkil Back seat's a navigator and weapons/radar operator. Front seat flies the plane.
How far did the missile travel/how long did it take?
Looks like it went clean through and not a miss...
Was waiting for a big explosion with a fireball and stuff, but then I remembered it's a test. Still impressive though.
@KindofWizard
This missile test did not include the explosive charge and only served as a measure of accuracy.
@MrPloopy83 Not a miss. Just not armed with anything to explode. You can see it hits the ship.
Beautiful missile
@conbatengineer understand but from what i know those air defense missile needs speed to catch up to jet fighter they can go up to 3 - 4 times the speed of sound.
Very cool.
so given that it had a fighter jet by its side the entire time, does that mean it flies at subsonic speed? on not much over mach 1 anyhow. seems kind of easy to intercept in that case.
Impressive
@TimbobJames so because it's not armed, there's no smoke trail or flame? o.O
i thought armed would refer to the warhead (the front) actually being explosive....
i'm not talking about the impact, i'm wondering about while in flight
@jonathan102 when did outrunning a fighter jet become slow?
That was wicked cool "SSSSWWWWOOOMMMPPPHHH" noise!
@madashell1200 NSM has (iirc) a 125kg warhead. Look up a small diameter bomb test to see a comparable blast
@MrPloopy83 maybe it was supposed to? sinking a boat just to test an missile seem a little unnecessary, so hitting the container was probably supposed to happen, after all you can see it takes an sharp turn to hit the container and not the boat it self..
cool. where can i get one?
So, did you do anything interesting today?
Well I had a drag race with a fucking missile.
i guess the drag (as in air resistance) pun was unintentional
@PotentialRoadkil not big since there is a co-pilot? co- pilot is the one whos filming?... :)
How far was the target from the launch site?
probably not, but you don't have live warheads in early guiding systems tests. If that was a live warhead the ship would go bye bye even though the missile hit high. Its still in development anyway, it's to be ready by 2015 to go with the F-35 JSF.
@Retroken3 cheers
@MrPloopy83 It did not miss it went through the ship
...it looks really small... probably just perspective...
though i thought there would be a cool flame or smoke trail too
@MrPloopy83 It's just testing to see if it can hit, it's not armed.
Hit!!! Hell yeah!
Did I miss something, the missile travels over the island towards the boat, looks like it's flying past it along the shore, then the next cut video during impact the missile arrives from the ocean side traveling towards land visible on the right side of the screen. Perspective... it's fucking with my senses.
That's one fast energizer bunny.
This makes me proud to be Norwegian.
Did you invent that missile?
@@lowellcalavera6045 yes me and your mother buildt it while your dad watched
😂
how far was that shot?
@Machiismo yeah, no ship.
Fyfaen det var futt i den der ja! :)
It hit just like it was supposed to. It was just empty cargo. The missile had no warheads because it was just target practise. I bet when they want to test its firepower they will set an full scale ship in its way. And this time packed with warheads.
How did the photo taken? If by flying jet, its shows that the missile is travelling no faster than a fighter jet.
Cruise missiles usually fly about as fast as a fighter jet.
You thought they flew under rocket power all the way to the target?
@moblin123 | terrran is so op) --- you deserve recognition for this
Only in Battlefield.. Du Dun Dun Du Dun Dunnnnn
@adickel Rockets as in the engine keeping in flight...of course.
This is almost identical to one of those ufo videos that were released by the pentagon.
@someonerules just the same reply comment twenty times before, i'm so tireeedddd !!! ^^
Nice, we ordered them for our coastal defenses.
Awesome but wished the pilot flew alot closer to it for some insane footage
@zero00tolerance its a missile, not a bullet.
Oh that is way to cool. Wouldn't it be better though if it flew at a higher altitude Incase of a mountain or something?
@tcottareltech No warhead in it. Just deadweight.
@memberHD What I meant.
Poor guy. He tried so hard, but that arrogant missile just would not wave back at him 🙃
neat.
Maybe we should buy some of these for our littoral combat ships. If Norway can fit them on a small corvette, we can fit them on an LCS.
@1BustedMyth I am not blaming anyone, nor palming it off. But as you said, some people engineer water pumps and some atomic bombs. I take my responsibilities in my circle and do my bit. I am just more of a realist and I know which battles I can win and which ones are equal to fighting windmills.
Talking about this stuff because of a missile video still seems a bit out of place in my opinion. Maybe we meet another day on something more interesting.
@Migzter05 Do you know that there'll be a Battleship movie that based on the board game?
Very Briefed and Summrized Ideas :
The missile have some down sides for example : 1- with 125 k.g payload the missile comes with limited destruction capabilities , 2- with low-low-low profile the maximum engagement ranges is 185 k.m and this is limited , 3- the price of the missile is 2.200.000 DY american dollars and if this huge price where negotiate from the specifications and the combat performance the aspects : the payloads , the maximum engagement ranges in the low-low-low flying mode , the missile is worthless with this pricing .
In the other hand and for example the iranians could develop their arsenal from the aim-54 phoenix to be anti ship missile with : 1- plus 150 km ranges ( the original range in the air2air configuration is 190 km those figures could be degraded when missiles were launched from the sea and the land ) , 2- speed of 5 mach , 3- suitable structural size and large cone , the missile is very scalable platform to be develop for multiple combat tactical and operational employments .
The combat tactical and operational employments from the surface vessels for example each speed missile boat could host from 8 - 12 or even 16 missile to ensure saturation the target , although the aim-54 phoenix ( with its current configuration ) possess relatively small payload of 61 k.g to effectively engage the large combat vessels,
But even if the employed this relatively modest payload , it can be utilized through the missile advanced command and control and guidance system to attack the most sensitive parts of the main battle ships like the kuscraft carriers or penetrating its combat group ( the multi layer defense ) or the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System (Aegis BMD or ABMD), for example (destroying, suppressing the awareness systems of the enemy vessels , such as radar systems, whether for the search, tracking and ( fire control radar ), or for the navigation . And the electro-optical multi-channel sighting systems such as that working in infrared , the Weapon systems, especially for the self-defense weapons such as standard missile sm guided missile cells , sea sparrow , CIWS ..... etc ,
and with it opening holes in the defensive domes surrounding those vessels to be attacked by the larger missiles with a greater payloads , if they managed to suppress the awareness systems of those ships they could use even the older generations anti ship missiles .
while developing an example with an armour piercing warhead coupled with :
1- advance and capable guidance systems , 2- the saturation of the target could compensate for the relatively modest payload of the single aim-54 for example ( engaging the DY american nuclear powered kuscraft carrier with 8 -12 or even 16 missile this would means delivering from 480 k.g to 960 k.g to a single point in the kuscraft carrier hull , this salvo of the modified aim-54 phoenix missiles could easily reach the DY american kuscraft carrier nuclear reactors causing a floating hiroshima , same things for the nuclear weapons stored on board those surface combat vessels .
.... Always And Forever May GOD Bless The Un United States Of HM Shninasios .....
Makes a big hole in the bridge. More than enough
@MrPloopy83 lol, you sure take offence fast. *Pokes the bear*
I flinched so hard
"Garuda 1, intersect those cruise missles!"
@Pangjunmin It is not armed.
Didn't miss - it clearly wasn't armed and didn't explode on impact. Direct hit on the container, went right through it.
It was not launched from Point Mugu. It was launched from San Clemente Is. To prove it go to 0:05 and on google earth go to 30deg 56.858'N 118deg 31.866'W. Same place!
@AJ14141414141414
Test, no explosives obviously
Theoretically speaking, since this is a test, structural damage is less than 10%, loss of life less than 3%, yet soiled pants from the would be crew would rate over 65%
This thing is deadly accurate. Lethal.
Price please?
SWEET MAN!!!
It’s a very slow missile, that’s why you can capture it in airplane
no , the cam wasn't on airplane, the cam was mounted on another sea skimming missile specially designed for shooting video. and the time of launch of both missiles has a little offset, so the the cam would be just behind. though, the other cam was on a plane
@YoonaNeomuYeppeoSeo explain.
They aimed for a specific container 😊
Attack failure? It doesn't seem to have led to the sinking of the ship.
Fuck that thing is fast!!!!
Someone please explain this to me: did it miss the target? Or was it supposed NOT to hit the boat?
It was a direct hit on the container as it should. The missile passed through because it was not deployed with a live warhead. In field practice, it would have exploded on impact.
@@aanys thank you for replying my 10 year old comment. I had forgotten about this video and your reply made me rewatch it. It’s as incredible as it was then :)
Wow, this battlefield 3 sure has some sick graphics!
Press 6 to watch the ship fire a cannonball.
I thought they missed at first, I was like =_=
@Migzter05 B7.....HIT!
@seba1337 nope.
0:30 made me jump
Have anyone notice that this thing is going slow for a missile ?... the fact the the plane can go side by side... this plane is going at Mach 1.5 max ? i dont know any expert would like to tell me more thanks
It is a Cruise Missile, It has a max speed of Mach 0.93. It is faster than Harpoon
Holy mother of god.
You sunk my battleship
My country's navy is getting these babies...yes!
Polish?
Sorry mate no specifics...
So is us navy
Fear Of Missiles- Ballistophobia
Theres a word for the fear of MISSILES?!
wtf is the footage of der missile over the water shot from a plane?!? looks like hees flying super sonic then
+Robert Kroeber
Most all Anti-Ship missiles are just under the speed of sound, travelling from .85 to .95 Mach.
A Fighter jet can easily pace alongside it.
This is because for long range, Rocket motors don't have all that great fuel efficiency. Rocket propelled missile will have very high supersonic speed, but the motor burns out and it then coasts to the target, meaning short range.
On Antiship missiles like this, or harpoon, or Exocet, or any number of Anti-Ship Cruise missiles... the rocket motor is only to boot the missile clear on launch, then drops off after about 3 seconds and a JET engine takes over and flies the missile to the target. this gives a much greater range, but slower speeds.
That pretty correct. Now, only Russian and maybe India have supper sonic ASM such as Oniks and Brahmos
Sod Cavardos Even those tend to be two stage missiles, using a jet sustainer for the long distance fly out to the target and then a 2nd stage "sprint" body that uses a rocket to close at supersonic speed for the final phase of flight.
not to mention they like to employ ramjets rather than turbines, resulting in lower range but significantly increased range and payload
