- France's Baltic Watches specialize in making very cool vintage-inspired watches. Especially their collection of Aquascaphe dive- and sportswatches is very popular. In this video I review the new Aquascaphe Titanium diver.

Have seen this watch on a sailcloth strap & it elevates the quality. Great looking design! 👍🏻
Baltic has some of the best designs in the micro brand space.
Agreed! The design is sooo clean and classic!
In some ways it reminds me of the Seiko SPB143J1 that also has this sorta 'can't go wrong' versatile vibe.
I couldn't resist and got myself a black one, as a bonus it's numbered (No. 019 here).
It's a really great watch. I find myself checking it out on my wrist, to appreciate its beauty, not so much to check the time. :P
I agree that both the Seiko SPB143J and the Baltic are excellent. I am currently facing this choice and I am torn.
@@edteach3r Tough one. The SPB143J1 comes on a bracelet and looks good on a strap, with the Baltic you don't get the bracelet so you're out that option. The SPB has a date window (though I usually care more for what day it is than what date), the Aqua is out of Titanium. There are a lot of complaints regarding quality control with Seiko, getting one is a bit of a gamble (think: misaligned bezel). So, so far it's about even. Why choose, get both!? 🤭
In the end it's all about the look and presence... and for some reason for me the Baltic wins. The grey sunburst dial on the Seiko is dropdead gorgeous, but there's a lot of repeated elements otherwise, all those squared off markers and hands. The subtext (e.g. water resistance) goes from small to wide and the bezel looks quite busy. The beatrate is not that high at 3 Hz (compared to the more gliding in appearance 4 Hz/28800 bph of the Miyota movement), but is very signature 'Seiko'.
The Baltic still has a very interesting dial and texture and is more organic in its appearance. The rounded off indices and the triangle at 12 give it a more luxury feel perhaps (Rolex, Tudor, ...). The subtext goes from wide to small (imho that is more correct and visually pleasing than the other way around on the Seiko) and the clean and brushed bezel is a real standout! The tint of the lume is also just so right for the watch and the crystal has more dome and plays with the light nicely. In my eye it is the more special watch of the two, everything comes together so nicely here.
The MSRP of the Seiko is at €1250, which is a bit of a stretch, I wouldn't get either of them for more than say 850-900. But with the Baltic you're getting Titanium and 300m VS Stainless Steel and 200m, a higher beatrate and nicer look. In direct comparison I don't find it overpriced. Maybe in comparison to a Singapore/Asia run microbrand such as Zelos or RZE perhaps, but that's comparing apples to oranges (plus: add VAT/import duties to a Zelos and it's suddenly not thát cheap anymore).
@@shiznuts You raise some very good points, muddying the waters further 😀. Seriously though, yoiu are helping to clarify importants elements to my thinking. If it is the Seiko, I will check it out at the AD for QC. Also, I do not want the newer version with the lume pip next to the date. In my opinion, the initial release looks so much cleaner. Nonetheless, the Baltic is my favourite at the moment, and it is slightly cheaper at the current exchange rates. The big question is now... blue or black? Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond.
@@edmunddebeer8207 I'm almost always siding with monochrome tones, so black 🖤 over blue was an easy pick for me (plottwist: I am currently wearing my Nodus Sector Pilot with blue dial though 😅). And the thoughts on the SPB143J1 are from ownership perspective. 🤭
The girlfriend hasn't forced me to scale down the collection in favor of a Chanel bag just yet, but should I have to part ways with one it's gonna be the Seiko. Of course that could also be the attraction to the new shiney toy, but even before the Baltic I didn't nearly wear the Seiko as much as I thought I would.
I'd be more inclined to slap on the cheap 5 series SNXS79J1 or this Nodus I'm wearing now, for daily/work I'm a sucker for day+date watches (I live a very irregular life and haven't got a clue what day of the week it is most of the time). But it's nice to have variety and choice. All part of the collecting journey to try things and find out what works for you. 👍
How's this one compare to the Citizen "Fujitsubo" though, I wonder?
I was underwhelmed by the watch and returned it. Of the micros I have owned/reviewed so far, that's the first one I felt didn't live up to my expectations.
Thing about titanium is it’s light and got a great subdued grey, but check out how it seems to scratch and ding.
That’s why it makes good sense to brush the case on divewatches.
Due to the strong dollar it's selling for $700 USD right now. Do you think it's 100% recommend at that price?
I really like the looks of Baltic but those over-stuffed profit margins keep me away.
