This does make sense. Had that happened last Thursday. After my 9th 10 pin of the set, I got aggravated and threw the ball to hard. Missed left. The next one same thing. Except missing right. I also took other advice as well. Walk in a straight line to the 10 pin. I also experimented with dropping a full pound for the cross alley shots. The tip that was shown in this video and the other two increased my 10 pin pick up percentage from 32% up and stays between 75 to 83% percent now.
Exactly how I shoot my 10 pins. Straight at it, but same ball speed as my strike shot. I draw a line with my eyes from the 10 pin to my right shoulder and I follow that same path with the ball. Nice, smooth, easy release.
This my favorite video of 2023 I’m a left hand bowler and any pin left on the left side Is similar to seeing a good horror movie TERRIFYING lol so I’ll try and muscle the ball and it’ll go in the gutter or just miss by a lil bit. But seeing this video it finally clicked to just relax and roll the ball and let the ball work and boom I was picking my left side spares up that’s a great feeling so thanks Mike for making this video
I generally pick up spares pretty well but do miss at times. My spare ball speed is 13 miles per hour but my hook speed is 10-11 miles per hour. So I am more of a stroker but technical with finesse at the same time.
Great video. I think it’s important to note, for players that put no side rotation on their spare shots, it’s naturally going to be faster than their strike shot. This is because there’s no side rotation to slow the ball down, that’s just physics. There is at least one exception where speed is beneficial for spares, and that’s for the 7-10 split.
Really great info. And makes total sense. I’m just getting comfortable with a hook, and still just have my one ( entry level) hook ball. I have to chase spares with it and know I need a spare ball. I had wondered if it should be straight drilled or fingertip, and watching you still use a hook release has completely made me rethink and understand everything. I’ve been trying to straight release and swing harder just to slide through any unintended side spin. Seems I need to stop that before I develop bad habits. This is cool. Thank you.
A lot of times this happens when I miss a spare going too slow and my ball gently hooks away from the pin I’m aiming at. Then I try to absolutely destroy the pin on the next spare attempt.
If you throw the same way you do with your reactive ball to a spare ball (or ball that won't spin) will it still go straight instead of just lining up with that corner pin and using a forward roll? Now that I think about it, coming at an angle will avoid it skidding off the pattern into the gutter. What if you don't have a reactive ball? Do you just use forward roll but throw at an angle?
Now I realize when I'm off on my 10 pins for league night (under 80%), it's because I throw it too hard. I end up hitting the 5 pin that isn't there LOL!
Then you need to change your release dramatically. Take as much hand out of the shot as possible... straight up the back, no axis rotation. It's a whole lot easier said than done for most of us. Trying to throw it significantly harder than you're comfortable with, will almost always make your accuracy suffer. Pony up the ~$100 for a plastic spare ball. You can leave your normal release and ball speed intact. It is by FAR, the path of least resistance.... trying to brute force the ball into doing something it's not designed to do requires an advanced skill set that most of us don't have... otherwise we'd all be on TV.
If you put side roll on the ball, it will hook. If you roll the ball straight with a straight hand position, it goes straight. I literally do it the majority of the time. I use my DV8 Brutal Collision to pick up the 10 pin.
When I go for a 10pin or a 6pin (cross lanes, plastic spare ball) my ball speed goes up from "17" to "21" mph. Without thinking about it. When I go for anything left of the head pin I start to reduce speed from "17" to "10" mph. I purposely reduce speed on this. I have no confidence throwing cross lane to the 4 or 7 but I can pick everything on the left up consistently throwing straight up the 5 board at a lower speed and letting it come over to connect with the 4 or 7 or whatever. I'm trying to get confidence using my spare ball on the left side but I haven't had extra practice time recently so my scores suffer if I try something I'm not comfortable with at leagues or in competition.
just remember that a straight spare ball will not reduce in speed as much as a hooking strike ball, so most house distance measuring equipment (which is usually placed anywhere from 45-55 feet down lane) will show a higher speed for a spare shot even if you launch it at the same speed the only way to verify you have consistent first/second ball speed is to use a video tool or a facility with SPECTO
It also seems that people throw too hard at splits and or pins with a sleeper, because even if you hit your target and hit the pins, it causes less pin action.
Wish i had figured this out earlier in my bowling game. Great tip!
Spot on.. nice reminder to slow down!

Be awesome to have a one-on-one coach session from Mike Shady. Great tips and advice, from an experienced professional bowler..🤟👍✌️

Same here! If I miss a 4 or 7 it is because I rushed up there and threw too hard!

Lol I made the same comment before I read this
Great tip coach, people say I throw the ball too slow but I get what you're saying. Thanks a lot.

The way E.J Tackett shoots at spares is ridiculous.
Good tips
I enjoy throwing hard at spares. It's part of the fun.

does this apply to 2-handers as well?
All the two handers on tour have same speed for spare shot

Same with two handed style?
What if you don't use a spare ball to shoot spares? More speed is needed to overcome the ball's natural tendency to hook.

you need know robert smith.. hard spare dont fail...

Speed has cost EJ Tackett at least 10 PBA titles.

What is a sleeper?
@@JG-tx7mt a pin that is behind another pin. for example, with the 2-8 the 8 is called a "sleeper" .
