So when I saw this thumbnail, my thought was... CLICKBAIT! Dude..... this simple thought process is possibly one of the most insightful teaching moments in bowling. After watching this video, I couldn't get it out of my mind.
Squaring my shoulders and hand to the inside have been my focus at the beginning of league this year. First week shot 30 as an average, over my average.
Someone on Reddit mentioned this video and if you follow what JR is showing the light bulb goes off for those of us that have been chasing how the release should actually feel. I did this in practice this morning before I found the video. Fantastic advice.
Everything JR said is 100 percent correct! I'm the "wrong handed" guy and my hand is forever changed. Since his redrilling and coaching my average has increased from 184 to 196. 1 month!! The coolest part was that JR really took time to listen and made sure I focused on being consistent. Truly a bucket list trip!!
Thank you JR! My #1 problem. Can’t wait to get back down there and log some training with you. If any of you have been thinking about going to see him..stop thinking about it and GO!
I haven't bowled since covid. So I got rid of all my bad habits by not bowling for so long . I used what you taught in your video. I am a stroker bowler and the ball was moving like crazy.... I've never had great ball movement like that. Thank you 👍👍
Oh man, this is just I have been working on, because of some of your prior videos on this subject. I gotta tell ya, my last couple of trip to the lanes have been HUGE improvements. I have been working on hand on inside of ball and elbow on the inside of my hand. I have also found that I can get more rev's and less axis rotation, still getting the hook I want (not as much over-hook as I used to) and getting much better drive through the pins. I did some testing one night and found that I get WAY more hook than I thought I would when I go more up the back of the ball and reduce my axis rotation but maintain high rev's. I get much more consistent and predictable hook and MUCH more drive through the pins. Excellent video JR !!!
Perfect video, this is exactly what I've been trying to work on for the last few months. One thing that helped me is to keep the V created by your index and middle fingers facing the pins. I think Darren Tang said this. I'm going to try and incorporate this as well
I'm gonna try that finger brushing the pant leg mindset next time I bowl. I have a problem with getting around the ball too much 2 handed and my track rolls over the finger holes.
This is EXACTLY what I needed. I learned how to bowl with a hook over the winter, but not properly. Now I know what I was doing wrong. Can't wait to try this out 👍
What just helped me recently, I have been struggling to get off the top of the ball. He said to come up with the ring finger up to the sky. 🙂 and then a guy said to reach out so i put that together and what a difference, i have tilt but no rotation. I was an end-over-end forward roller but finally got rotation. I will try this one too. Thanks Jr
I focused on this solely during my bowling league last week, and my score vastly improved. Whenever I make a minor adjustment to my play, especially during league, I focus on one change such as this. This has single-handedly helped me out a ton without thinking about it too much and bowling a 640 series. Thanks, JR Raymond.
Great video. I've been struggling with an inconsistent release and your descriptions about visualizing knuckles to the ground and fingers brushing the inside of the leg are like a light bulb going off. Looking forward to trying this out on the lanes.
I've been coached to get my left arm in front of my body until the release. But my body just wouldn't do it... until I tried your tip - have your fingers brush your pant leg when the ball drops. The first practice was probably hilarious to anyone watching. However, two days later at league (sport shot), I was around 20 pins over average. You are correct...it can change your life/game. Can't wait for regular league next week. Thank you very much!
Much appreciated. I'm finding along with this is great information that if I keep my thumb at one o-clock on the approach that there is a good improvement. Just need to do more practice. Thanks.
I watched this video, pondered it a bit kept my elbow as you suggested and promptly tossed a 723. More consistency than I think I have ever had on release and ball motion. Small sample size but it sure seemed to make a difference in ball performance.
So is there a drill I can do either at the lanes or at home to get rid of the "suitcase" release I was taught 3 decades ago? I started out as a backup ball roller, then a "coach" had me roll the ball with a suitcase release to get the ball motion to hook. Now, because I had done that so much early in life, it became a muscle memory thing. One that I cannot get rid of.
Bro its like you read my mind cuz im having this exact problem. First time joining league and last week barely scratched the surface of 140. Will try this out
I just thought about that I could be standing too upright and need to start with some slight forward lean. I’m trying to get back to my pre hamstring tear setup/approach and I can’t seem to find it after a month of trying
I’m going to be 68 in June and just started bowling again this season after a gap of about 35 years due to back injury and two surgeries. What’s your advice on how often to bowl each week for someone my age? I’ve joined three leagues, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights and my average, which started at about 155, is now 187 on Friday night and 165 or so for the other two nights. I’ve purchased two new balls, a Storm Hyroad pearl and a 900 Harsh Reality (moved down to a 14lb weight for the 2nd ball). I only bowled a couple years in my 30’s, so I’m not very experienced and I’m still learning, but I use a finger tip grip and try to rotate the ball with my throw, but I have low rotations so far. I’m also going to try to get some lessons and might consider online instruction if local lessons aren’t satisfactory. Lately I’ve been watching tons of videos and practicing or bowling league 5 times a week and I want to know if this is too much?
I'm so close to my ankle I hit my ankle with the ball a few times! Most recently 2 weeks ago after a long break and my timing was off.... I'm going to find an ankle guard!
OK, so tried this last night. It took a lot of getting used to, but I somehow got it to the pocket almost every shot. Did I have more revs? I think so. Was I behind the ball? Hard to say without video. I’ve gotten more revs before trying to stay behind it, but my hand was always on the side of the ball when seeing the video. Anyway, I shot 289 in game 1. Game 2, 2 consecutive pocket 7-10’s for 204. Then shot 246 in game 3 for a 739. I will have to take video to see if I truly changed my release much. That said, I’m 64 years old, and today I have some elbow soreness. I’ve never had that happen in my life. So, I may not be able to bowl like this anyway.
I’ve been paying attention to this more and more as I continue to bowl and I even tried tucking my elbow behind my hip, but when I looked back at the video I took, I was twirling the ball, and for some reason even though my elbow is in, my hand is not on the inside. Can someone give me an explanation?
Great idea and I use a kettle bell at home upstairs to practice this. To lazy to bring a ball upstairs at my age lol. Just and fyi, I know the chances are slim to none, but please move that couch out from under those bowling balls. I helped out in a pro shop for years and have seen balls fall off the wall or the plastic break from an unseen crack. Hell I even saw a ball fall as someone hit the back side of the wall with a large object they were moving. I don't want to hear about someone being hurt and certainly not the kids.
I want to improve my bowling and staying inside the ball JR. I’ve been bowling for about three years and want to start taking it pretty serious, i would love to come see you to have my new balls drilled and get some lessons on staying inside the ball. Please reply!
What if you’ve had your labrum, rotator cuff, clavicle and bicep tendon surgery? I can turn my wrist to the inside but not more than maybe 1”. How can I still keep my hand inside?
I can only stay in the inside on the no step drill...when I put the approach, its almost impossible to stay in and under the ball. It is so frustrating...I will keep trying but I am feeling so sad right now
@@Tenpindoctors Thanks JR. Now that I think about it, there is some truth to it. I know this because when I force myself to keep my chest "open" I usually roll my ball better. So I should focus on my non bowling hand to keep the non bowling elbow in the right position? ty!!
@@Tenpindoctorsthis is exactly what happens to me!! How do I fix it? I'm perfect on foul line drills and even one step but I lose it in my full approach!
Thanks Jr I'm left handed. No you folks who bowl right handed are using the wrong arm. Leftys score more. just kidding jr. But b4 I buy a ball I watch your videos. You do a great job making those videos. My favorite lady bowler is coming to Columbus Ohio Aug 3 and 4th. At sequoia pro bowl. I think daria is a great bowler and teacher. Take care jr
JR...... Love the video. Noticed you have a Motiv Pride (original one) on the display shelf. Any chance it is a 14 lb. ball. If so, I would like to talk about purchasing it. Please let me know. Thanks
Not at all, he said think about brushing your fingers. Any good coach already knows to get you to tuck your Armswing closer and under your head it’s common knowledge. With that being said if you haven’t touched your shoe with your bowling ball every now and again you ain’t there 😅
It’s the funniest thing when someone wacks there ankle with the ball during the swing. I did it before it hits that ball bone on your ankle and it’s hurts. I remember my buddy was trying to strike so hard and he wacked his ankle, best laugh I ever I had in my Life.
If the arm should touch the leg, you will not get a straight pendulum movement. Having difficulty putting it together with moving the arm in a straight movement.
I'm a 60 year old senior bowler with a 195 average and I'm happy with my game. If I was getting into many tournaments or had goals to join the Senior Tour, then maybe I would take time off to redo my release and make sure my hand is in the inside of the ball. I have done this several times and it hurt so badly!!!
I’ve hit my ankle plenty. Still won’t do it incorrectly to protect my ankle
When I was younger I hit my ankle about every 100 shots.
It happens, I've smacked the inside of my ankle more than my fair share of times
Can you do that wearing a brace..?..
Question: why do I need a release close next to my ankles? I lay the ball down about 2' in front of me. Is this not OK?
