    Autophagy is maximal after fasting 24+ hours, during hiit, in hypoxia. Add: hitt = high intensity interval training, eg. 30 second anaerobic sprinting (or weightlifting) with high heart rate followed by 20 second rest, repeat a few times. Autophagy starts and builds during muscle recovery, so don't overdo it. Autophagy in fasting has all-over body effect, but in exercise is local muscle effect. Combined, in moderation, is best, I think. Hydration with electrolytes is requisite.

      I’m just looking into it. I surf a lot and at a pretty high level in big waves for 3-4 hours. It’s a looooottttt of paddling. It’s a bit more muscle intensive than cardio/running but not as much as lifting or strength training. Probably relatable to swimming, but for a long time and with breaks. I almost always surf on an empty stomach which is great, but I’m worried about if I didn’t eat at all the day before and if I would feel weak and have less energy. I’m looking into different methods but I am most interested to try the every other day thing mentioned in this video

      You have to work up to a 24 hour fast
      And the smartest way of doing that is to go low carbs for a while, and intermittent fasting where you slowly increased the length of your fast and shorten your eating window
      It’s most difficult for the first week or two
      But it’s not crazy difficult at all

After just 2 days of doing 18/6 fasting, I broke through my plateau, lost 3 lbs (can hardly believe it), mostly fat(calipers), while increasing my calories to around 1800. It's amazing that there are so many "theories" about when this actually happens. After 12 hours? 14? 18? 24? Frankly, I'm sick of all the "experts" not even coming close to an agreement. I've been doing IF 18/6 for 4 months... have lost 28 pounds and got off one of my T2 meds (Glipizide) that was making me feel crappy. Easy to keep this up, but would really like more definitive answers.

      I have been doing low carb/keto for years. Recently I became interested in IF and autophagy. The guy who seems to have a good handle on things is Dr Jason Fung, I have found his videos useful. That being said from what I have found from my research is that the minimum time for fasting to cause useful autophagy seems to be about 18 hours. I've been doing 20 to 24 without strain, eating once a day, I have seen claims that the length should be varied a bit for best effect. There is a study out of Germany that was done on Muslims during Ramadan where they were fasting for about 18 hours a day for a month due to religion. The 18 hours was giving them the kind of positives that autophagy is supposed to provide. The researcher that got the Nobel Prize in 2016 for his study of autophagy seemed to support 24 hours.
      It is difficult when we are just trying to do the best for our health and there are all these people with one or another axe to grind who either have specialized needs ,like bodybuilders or who are looking to make some kind of distinction for some kind of personal profit. I am not buying programs or books or courses for something that is basically so simple. The ketovore diet I do now just has some basic simple rules, I don't need to give someone(s) a bunch of money to tell me what I already know. It appears that getting into autophagy is equally simple, some people feel the need to complicate it to make money or set themselves up as some little tin god. Enough ranting, I hope this helps, I have staved off the need for diabetes drugs for 21 years with diet.

I've tried dry fasting for two to four days and that hasn't really helped that much. I suppose if you did it regularly enough it would but in my experience intermittent fasting is a lot easier.

    We should add the role of acetyltransferase and P300 protein that inhibits the Autophagy.
    So low energy = lack of Acetyl-coA = inactive Acetyltransferase = inactive P300 = Autophagy.
    Also, once a day meal could cause autophagy when walking/aerobic exercise is incorporated. Or if we add Spermidine or autophagy inducer.

    It is not the same for everyone. I measure my ketones and because I’ve been doing IF for 9 weeks I’m continuously in ketosis even after I eat. I go by the measure ‘the higher the ketones, the more autophagy’. The body is always in a state of autophagy. The key is the degree. Nobody knows for sure when this happens. In mice it happened between 24-48 hours. You can help authophagy by taking NMN and resveratrol. Check Dr David Sinclair.

      Fasting might help but you have to ensure you are well hydrated during fasting. Certainly, dehydration that can result from fasting increases the risk of gout flares in a patient with gout. Fasting is frequently used by people to conform to their beliefs and for weight loss. weight loss is beneficial for gout.
      Rarely, frequent or prolonged fasting may lead to some metabolic changes that could possibly contribute to a higher risk of flares, although this is far less plausible and not well studied at all. A healthy diet and adequate hydration are the best ways to keep gout flares at bay.

    If you use an OMAD approach to alternate day fasting, then it would be multiple cycles of 48-hour fasts.
    What happens if you push it to 72-hour or 96-hour fasts?

    Does anyone have tips on maintaining blood sugar during an extended fast? I'm not diabetic, but I can barely get to 24 hours before my BS craters i have no choice but to eat something.

    • @AnnUnicornStarTarot
      @AnnUnicornStarTarot 3 місяці тому

      I used to get low blood sugar easily and had to eat every 2-3 hrs. I read somewhere to eat a small piece of celery every hour you're awake, until it fixed the problem. I carried a baggie of celery pieces with me. Did it for weeks and it eventually worked. Then I very slowly started fasting with just 1 hour delays to a meal...I then was able to do a 24-hour fast, then occasional 3 day fasts. now I mostly do 14-20 hr fasts randomly. I very rarely get low blood sugar anymore and can choose when I feel like eating instead. Not sure if this would work for everyone, as I'm honestly not sure why the celery helped.

    We don’t know if autophagy slows down after 48 hours of fasting though do we? There’s nothing to suggest it does, I’ve also seen studies that say if you aren’t already in ketosis you have to fast for 72 hours just to induce autophagy?

    • @animatedbiologywitharpan
      @animatedbiologywitharpan  2 роки тому +8

      No no , it not correct , your body goes to a ketosis state after 18hrs or so . Ketosis and initiation of autophagy is not that related. You can watch my autophagy video to know the factors triggering the autophagy.
