I remember when my dad bought that same motor and had a hundred arguments explaining why it wasn't a 50. Lol

Yes I believe it was that they started checking the horsepower @the prop but same motor as the old 500's

I have this motor, when I turn the key to start it.i just hear the relay click..I replaced the relay,,,same click,no starter engaging.. I'm lost..any suggestions?thanks to all

Put a volt meter on the positive side of the starter and make sure there is 12 volts when the key is turned. If there is then check that the starter is grounded. If not the relay should be changed. If you dont have a meter just jump a positive line from the battery to the starter to see if it works. Hope this makes sense to you.

I'm doing a water pump replacement on a mine I can't find where you disconnect the shift linkage do you know I know this is no video but can't find much on the internet

The shift linkage is connected to the lower unitby means of a splined shaft. It slides off as lowered unless stuck.

I have an 87 classic 50 that will not start without some fuel being sprayed into the carbs a few times but once it warms up it will start just fine is this a carb issue or fuel pump or what?

    • @smedsmarineland

This is a problem I sometimes can't figure out. First make sure the idle screw on the carb is adjusted rich enough then check that the chokes are sealed properly when closed. If not usually rebuilding the carbs does the trick but not always. If your fuel hose bulb stays hard its not the fuel pump. could be plugs, bad stator or trigger firing twice. Ive read even bad rectifier (but doesn't make much sense). I have always figure the ones I cant figure out must be bad reeve valves. Hope this gives you a place to start troubleshooting. Smed

hey Hal, sounds like a leak between the carb and the manifold.

Sorry Joseph, I must have overlooked this comment. Go to www.mercruiserparts.com/mercruiser_parts.asp to see the part number and what it looks like. If you haven't got the motor fixed yet let me know what part you need and I can help you out. Again sorry for the huge delay
