Steaming Hot Telltale - 1989 45 hp Mercury - Part 4

  • I’m at my wits end about this over heating condition. I really thought I had this problem solved. I’ve done everything except pulled the power head to fix this issue.
    Could it be it just needs a complete new water pump kit? That’s going to be next before I decide to pull off the power head.
    If anyone has any suggestions that might help I would really appreciate it.

    Great vid .My old uncle Wullie (William) was like this guy .Quite sombre .No high drama .Taught you things without any ups or downs .Listen and learn or fuck off .If you were interested and your ears were open and your mouth shut you learned a LOT .He fixed up a little scrambler for his son .Told them not to take it on any roads or their would be trouble .Of course they did .Up in the industrial area and shortly the traffic cops appeared and felt their collars. Took young William and his pal back to uncle Wullie .He said to the cops I can sort this out for you in 1 minute .He went into his shed and produced a heavy hammer and proceeded to smash the engine casings and carbs to pieces in front of the traffic cops .They nodded and dropped the charges .Walked away .

    Hello! I would like your help.I have a mercury 40 2t classic 1993 I have two questions, does it have a thermostat? And in case the impeller doesn't work could I set an alert to see it before the engine starts? Thank you!

      I would need to have the model number to see if it has a tt. The only way to tell if the water pump is working is if water is coming out the telltale. If not it's either plugged up or the impeller is worn out.

    16:16 I’ve got the same problem with a 1977 7.5 hp I’ve got no water just exhaust coming out the tell tale there is a water jacket plate on the port side of these motors when I took mine apart it looked like the gasket was done letting exhaust fill the cooling system I’ve ordered some new gaskets I’ll let you know

    Check The center of the impeller. They usually let go from the rubber.

      Kenneth Young… The problem is identified in part six of this series. Go to ua-cam.com/video/OnWXUnvqJt4/v-deo.html if you want to see it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @MrMoisekiller31…. I feel your pain. Hopefully it’s just the water tube and you resolve the problem without too much trouble. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. Keep us posted on your progress.

    I understand this is a old video and probabaly irrelevant now, but that's a blown head gasket and that's why the tell tale is pulsing... You just removed the water jacket off the cylinder head... Only if you removed the cylinder head and replaced the gasket you would have come to find that the cylinder that was leaking on the gasket was pressuring the water jackets around the cylinders.... And as cylinder pressure is stronger than the water pump that is why the tell tale was pulsing like it was..... And it's steaming hot out the tell tale cause the tell tale is the first exit for water as it's pumped up from the lower unit... So in short a blown head gasket was pressuring the cooling system preventing the natural flow of the coolant

      @bradbuss8402…. A bad head gasket is a good guess but this motor does not have a head gasket. It’s a bullet style block and was not designed with a removable head. It’s integrated into the block. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Man that sure is frustarating. I was sure after all those impeller pieces came out that you had it. But maybe it is that housing. Who knows. Hopefully it gets sorted. The water stream looked pretty hot just from the video

    • @LivetofishOutboardRepair
      @LivetofishOutboardRepair  3 роки тому +2

      It sure was hot. I believe the problem is more related to exhaust gases mixing with the cooling water. There is probably an obstruction in the passages under the powerhead or in the exhaust side panel. Either way if the new water pump kit doesn’t fix it I will pull the powerhead and remove the side exhaust panel to clean it all out. This would be my only alternative.

    Before pulling PH, could try taking leg off and try back flushing with a garden hose from the telltale end. You'll need a small nozzle attachment for garden hose to fit in telltale end. Might clear out whatever is plugging it up.

      I tried using compressed air 125 psi. Do you think water would be better?

      @@LivetofishOutboardRepair I think its worth a shot. I have a 77 50hp that is a little shy with muffs, only pees if in the lake or deep in a barrel. I had to run Salt-Away through it and also back flushed with a hose for a good 15 minutes (it was an abused salt water motor). Its better but not perfect. If you can rest your hand on the exhaust plate side while its running, you are good and its not getting too hot.

    • @LivetofishOutboardRepair

      @@traviseinertson2060 there is no way you can even touch the head or exhaust plate for more than a second without being burned. I have the foot off again now and will run the hose through it like you suggested. I hope it helps. If not I’ll try a new water pump kit then after that it will be a decapitation.

      @@LivetofishOutboardRepair oh wow. Let me know if you find out what issue is if you find out, I am curious. You have the little woodruff key in the impeller? Water pump housing in good shape? And the little seal in the housing must be in good shape and make a tight seal with the water tube. That's about all I can think of other than some kind of blockage in the powerhead.

    • @LivetofishOutboardRepair
      @LivetofishOutboardRepair  3 роки тому

      @@traviseinertson2060 Yes you are absolutely right. I show the condition of the water pump in the video. The upper housing had some melted plastic inside and around the cup edges but I cleaned it off and felt it was reusable. If you think it was damaged beyond repair and should be discarded and replaced, let me know. I’m planning on installing a new complete water pump kit just to be sure but I would still like your opinion of how it looks to you. Furthermore, I know I had impeller fins caught inside the pump, water tube and water passages inside behind the water cover (head). I was able to remove them by removing the water cover and blowing them out with air. I just think there is more under the power head or inside the side exhaust plate.
