Can anyone tell me what that grey fabric type ground? is and exactly what its for. I have same motor and mine is just hanging there..I am assuming its for the starter as the starter was all messed up and I replaced it and was missing bolts. but was not connected before i fixed so just left it.Motor runs great. just curious as hell.
I believe you are talking about the ground wire that screws to the shroud bracket . its there to ground it because it is mounted on rubber for vibrations.
@@smedsmarineland Thanks !
ok, so maybe this a dumb question, I have the exact motor... that is a 2-stroke right? Is it a 4-cylinder 2-stroke? If so, is it an auto-blend system or premix? Can I run premix?
I bought it from a guy that said it was a 4 stoke... so.. Idk...
Yes its a 2 stroke 4 cylinder. This one is premix. The autoblend system is seperate from the motor really and can be used on many 50:1 motors. Autoblends can be rebuilt. Hope that answers any questions.
I love your motor support. Can you do a quick video showing the add ons to the dolly? Thanks.
Ineedcarberators
Do you still have this motor
No I sold her.
I’m about to buy a boat with that engine are they good engine?
It seemed like a good strong engine but I only had it on the stand and never tried it on a boat.
The best money can buy 👌
I know this is an old thread. Mine is idling high . Is their an adjustment screw somewhere
Each carb has an air screw adjustment but it is most likely your linkage adjustment. Be careful not to throw out your synchronizing.
I wish mine started that easy!
You couldn't hook up a control eh
Здравствуйте. Есть электросхема на этот мотор?
Sorry I have no idea what you just asked.
THANKS MAN!! This honestly helped a lot
Your welcome thats great.
I have the exact same motor as you but i am having issues with an air leak
I have this motor, when I turn the key to start it.i just hear the relay click..I replaced the relay,,,same click,no starter engaging.. I'm lost..any suggestions?thanks to all
Put a volt meter on the positive side of the starter and make sure there is 12 volts when the key is turned. If there is then check that the starter is grounded. If not the relay should be changed. If you dont have a meter just jump a positive line from the battery to the starter to see if it works. Hope this makes sense to you.
@@smedsmarineland thank you very much, this helped alot!
i just purchased a similar outboard motor possibly 1970 model year. i was just wondering where you found parts for your motor online. I'm in need of carb and fuel gasket kits. Thanks for any help you can share. Tom
I use a website mercruiser.com or any Mercury dealer can order the parts as well.
Ive run one of these for 5 years without fail .The electronic control connection would get hot ,best to reroute main power directly to the outboard .I love ours ,we run a 17foot runabout and can getbup to 35mph on a nice day
When set up properly they are a nice smooth little motor. Enjoy.
@@smedsmarineland I have one that I need to get running. Where are you located?
@@juliannepstad2757 I'm in Ontario Canada. A little too far lol.
What mixture are you running?
50 to one

This guy is stupid
Does this motor have thermostat?
Some of these motors did but I'm not sure if this year did or not. Sorry
@@smedsmarineland Thanks
I was looking at some pics of several year models & I couldn't identify where thermostat might be-
How easy is it to replace the pistons. I'm looking at a boat with this motor and I believe it needs to be bored and have new pistons installed. Just wondering if its worth the labor or just put another motor on the boat.
Hey Jon Your looking at a big job. There is no cylinder head on these motors, its all one big block and the crank has to come out to change the pistons but putting it back is the tricky part. In order to not chip any rings you need special ring compressors just for these motors. I would price it out before you make the purchase. Smed
@@smedsmarineland how many hours would you say would be involved? For a first timer. I'm a mechanic of sorts but never done this kind of thing
@@mrfixer987 I cant remember how long it took me but I would guess at around 30 hours. The carbs should be done as well. The nasty part is scraping some of the old merc gaskets off. Repaint everything seperate with the mercury phantom black will be rewarding. Have fun.
@@smedsmarineland thanks 👍. If I'm this far into the motor are there any other moving parts that might need to be changed. Wondering if I would find wear on the cam shaft where that would need to be changed or replaced?
@@mrfixer987 This is a 2 stroke so there is no cam or valves. I would rebuild fuel pump and carbs. Dont neglect the lower unit. New water pump and check all seals.
All you need now is several rolls of different colored wire....
Nice vintage bit of kit. I own one. She's in pristine condition. She's boxed away nice & bonny in a spare bedroom. Wrapped in a blanket & tucked up inside a old Bowers & Wilkins speaker box. I mean to get her out this summer. She'll be pushing my 25 year old Zodiac dingy yacht tender. Aren't they fantastic little gutsy motor's.
Yes I only tried mine on a squareback canoe and she was a bit hairy of a ride.lol
I should have watched this video yesterday...before spending ages (with the tailgate open) trying to figure why I had no power getting to the rear wiper. Thank you! Thank you!! Problem solved!!
I did the same thing. Who would have thought?
Hi if you still have the motor can you tell me where the red wire with the inline fuse goes
Sorry Terry I sold the motor and I dont have my manuals here with me.
Did you find out pos in silanoide
I remember when my dad bought that same motor and had a hundred arguments explaining why it wasn't a 50. Lol
Yes I believe it was that they started checking the horsepower @the prop but same motor as the old 500's
Sweet
Where is the power trum
The power trim pump and motor is just below the transom mount. You can see it at the end of the video when Im showing the trim work.
Was able to lift the clip to the wiper arm (3:50) but I can't pry the arm off. I think it's oxidized. Any suggestions?
Your probably right with corosion so get a good penetrating oil and spray the crap out if it. Make sure when you lift it your lifting straight up because the spring tends to jam it sideways. Last resort is drill a hole in the center and use a small puller.
@@smedsmarineland thanks. My last resort is to use a grinder and just cut the spindle. Means I'd have to buy a new wiper arm though
Sprayed it for a week, but couldn't get it off. Ended up grinding the motor spindle off. Years of corrosion and gunk, so obviously the previous owner had left it broken for a long time. Replaced the motor and put on a new wiper arm and Bob's yer uncle
@@hummer2223 nice to hace it working again. Something you do miss.
Excuse me sir I have the same exact motor I have a question about it if you're still doing this and you're still available
Ask away and Ill try to help if I can!
Very clean for how old it is
How much would this motor cost
What about how to clean the carbs on this 65 hp motor ?
To clean them properly they must come off.record the jet settings before they are dismantled. Soak them in a good carb cleaner for overnight. Check that the floats actually float and rebuild. I strongly recommend using a service manual and Mercury parts.
I have the exact same engine my 74 Tri Hull
Hi I have an 80 hp that needs a stator any idea of the part number cause I can find it
You should be able to find it with the serial number and where it was made
@@smedsmarineland thank you the person that sold me the motor didn't took good care ot it and I can't read the numbers on the sticker located on the transom bracket is there any other place on the motor with the serial number?
Yes there should be somewhere on the block that is stamped in. Your other option is to pull the stator and there should be a number on it usually right in the plastic. Make sure you use a proper puller to remove the flywheel.
Is that 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
Its a good ole 2 stroke
What is the model number please?
Gotta shut that dog up.
Como cambiar el eje de la propela
Oem looking stickers cost about $70
Awesome Thanks
What the power pack model number for that outboard after market or original
I'm doing a water pump replacement on a mine I can't find where you disconnect the shift linkage do you know I know this is no video but can't find much on the internet
The shift linkage is connected to the lower unitby means of a splined shaft. It slides off as lowered unless stuck.
Do you know the spark plug gap for the 85 mercury 50hp?
Not knowing the year or serial number of your motor, it may be NGK BUHW-2. If thats the correct plug they are a center electrode pre gap and you just install and torque. Hope this helped.
Do you happen to know the serial range on these? bought a boat with one fitted trying to get a couple of spares for it
Yes go to this website maxrules.com/merc_contents.php Or let me know the size of motor serial number and where it was made. Hope this helped. Smed
That will clean up pretty good
I can't thank you enough. The small clip you have to lift up to pull the arm off saved me from going nuts. You're the best!
Your welcome its those little tricks we thank youtube for.
