I’m an OMC guy but that engine is one of the sweetest you’ve had in a long while. It’s a real gem. I just love the inline 4, dual carb, tiller setup. So sweet. It even sounds like a beast. Kodi, please post a video of you with it on a boat. Please man.
The first motor I bought was an 82 7.5 hp mercury I remember singing that song on the lake and feeling so proud of my purchase. I've looked at a few of those 50's around here but they tend to be salty and crusty with low compression. It seems like the OMC motors from the same generation hold up better. Great video thanks for sharing your outboard passion with us.

4 cycle 50 hp Blows . Too heavy ,No balls ,Oil changes. A 4 cylinder 2 stroke 50 is smoother and twice the engine .4 strokes are garbage disposable outboards
Just purchased a bass boat with a fiddy and I’m glad I found your channel. She’s been in a barn for a while and she turns over but won’t catch. I’ll have to tinker around and replace the fuel and go from there. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
+GF, Hi' what year is your 5id-d ? Do it smart from the start, Clean, lube, check ALL the wire/ground connections etc. Fuel hoses & drop that lower & replace the impeller, kodi
After testing the stator wires with multimeter. The reading came off as 6200 (blue/blue white) and 175 (red/ red white) which is way over than what I found online (56-76 ohms) Does it mean the stator is bad and should be replaced? I was hoping it was more the switch box.
I find myself going back and watching Mercury 50 videos. After new stator, trigger, and switch box I had mine running similar to this. 3 weeks later I had it on my boat with the new aftermarket trim and tilt and controls all done. After hooking up to the truck yesterday I figured I would put the muffs on and try it. No go. Would only start with the lever all the way forward, wouldn't idle. Well I had no idea how long it sat. So I pulled the carbs. The top carb didn't have any gas in it for some reason. Ok well I found a couple of those rubber flappers sucked into the orifice holes they service. I kinda figured those were compromised. Carb kits coming in the mail. My buddy asked if my fuel line was ok and not collapsed. Hmmm I did notice when I ran it on the stand it was stretched straight out from my boat to the stand and this time was coiled up in the back of the boat.
Damn Kodi, You sure do like this one. It's really nice, and i enjoyed the song and guitar. This era was a good one for Merc 40 and up. I have a '79 Merc 40, and it is made really well, and runs great.
Hey there, watched all your vids on youtube. i have a mercury 500 50 hp ser # 7015125 an just cant figure out the problem. she fires up easy idles great , put it in high idle it purrrrrrrs, but when you put it into gear forward or back ward it will start to pull for a bit then lag then stalls. fires back up easy most times. i have rebuilt the fuel pump an now the top fuel line leak a lil gonna replace that this morning. if you squeeze the primer ball it seems to help the engine.just at a loss with this. im a motor guy but this is my first boat. use to rebuild my 2 stroke dirt bikes. thanx a million.

Hey Kodi, I too love Mercs. Back from our yearly coast trip and going to do some more videos. Your pretty good on guitar. One of these days will get an acoustic to share some songs although I do have a electric and small amp. My electric is a 12 string electric that the cheap tailpiece broke off. My plan is to make it into a 6 string with a new tailpiece down the road
I got a 75 500 thunderbolt and I’ve rebuilt the pump and changed lines and under load ins best way to describe it’s missing and just wont run right like something is holding in back from letting it roar to life
Great vifeo Kodi. I have a 82 or 83 mercury mariner. Its silver but the inside looks very similer. Last summer the motor started having a hard time starting. After running it for awhile it would start no problem. Also there would be times when i would be running it open and the power would drop to half. It felt like i was running off one cylinder. Any advice on where to start?
Got one of these is Australia - great compression. Carb seals are busted and I cant find replacment ones anywhere. Any ideas? I was thinking of sealing shut with sealant
I am looking at classic 50 on craigs list its an 83. Poster said that cannot get lowr unit off to service the water pump. But ran before. Yup the old ran before. Then there is another one 86 but twice the price with controls and a gas tank. I always liked Mercs as they were supposedly faster
+L2F, I as well love the Merc's, I run a classic 50 hp (1983 ) on my 18ft welded aluminum skiff, There has never been a Lower unit , with a propane torch, drill, lube, pry bar & Patience . That I couldn't remove. kodi

I have this same outboard 1982 50hp Mercury, I would to know about the aliment of the shift cam when I reinstall it is it to the left to the right or to the center ?. The book said to put in the forward poison but I am not sure witch poison that is on the cam,can you help me ?And yes it is a great outboard.
Well I got a 1980 50 with a bad stator and trigger. Compression is good. Paint on the head is like new . Looking like low hours. Thinking of going with the Sierra stator with open coils. Controls are weird. One lever for shift and throttle. No tilt and trim so going with a CMC 130 setup. Its going on a 1960 Whitehouse. Gonna haul the mail!
+L2F,, Dang Them CMC units R not cheap,, I have found that the Sierra units / parts R fine'' I take allot of heat on my channel 4 saying so, Oh' well I speak truth, It is what it is, The Sierra impellers & many of their Parts R better then OEM.. Beat Me up,, tear Me down''' OK' But that's My Opinion from real world applications. kodi
@@kodibassInsideoutboards Thank you for the input on the Sierra Stator. Its a third of the price of the CMC. That makes me feel better. I used to rewind electric motors for a living so copper on iron looks fine to me and see no reason why the stator needs to be encapsulated. Only retains heat. We only encapsulated windings for motors used in severe applications such as petrochemical industries
I have an classic 50 45hp on my Lund pro angler, she sounds good like this out of water, hooked up to the hose and bunny ears as I call them, but as soon as I have it in the lake it just Boggs down. I’ve had the carbs checked twice, had everything looked over, and replaced my fuel line, and same issue. I’m not sure what to do at this point, repairs are getting costly.
@@michaelfalconer2932 Check the trigger for cracks or heat damage .Had the same issue with mine.# 1 and 3 firing at same time. If you are certain fuel delivery is good from pickup in fuel tank forward to carbs, it is most likely an ignition problem when motor is underload...
I just bought a 35 hp Mercury 1984 I need a throttle actuator cam for it that goes to the carb. would you have one for sale? 155lbs. compression in both cylinders.

Go to iboats then click forms then Merc / Mariner type in your sn# and then type year of manufacture help please, check back in 20 mins or so and a Merc Guru will have your answer. kb
But it doesn't charge the battery unless you changed the stator and added a rectifier and changed the internal wiring harness .????? And did you time the engine after you changed the flywheel ? Did you do a H20 pump?
This motor came already set up with stator charge coil / rectifier in place. charges the battery just fine. Timed well and runs like a burning chicken. thanks kb
@@kodibassInsideoutboards There is still a return spring missing on the choke linkage that has to be there or it may suck the flaps closed at wide open throttle .
I have classic 50 1988 ,someone wired it to a throttle control that was fo something else ,I have been trying to find out how many pin the control wire plug is. I have put new prop, greased steering tube so it moves great now. Any idea how many pin it is?

+RV' Yes I do, But your best bet 2 completly understand the Process is a factory owners Manual, It goes into fine details (with photos) so as 2 allow getting it correct.. & On this motor there is a bit more than a person might think 2 get it dailed inn. kodi

You notice that a 50hp 4cyl is a lot smoother than a 2 cylinder 50hp

There is a tension spring missing on the carb linkage that goes in the two holes.
I need that spring!! But haven't had luck finding one
