You guys will never know how important this song was to a whole generation. You guys are lucky enough to grow up in a time where mental health is taken seriously. My generation did not have that luxury. We were told we were too young to have real problems, we were too young to be depressed, and that we needed to just get over it. We were not heard. This song was instrumental in saving a lot of people. This song gave words to what some of us were feeling and let us know that we were not alone. A lot of people who hear this song for the first time think its sad and depressing because its about suicide, but to my generation, it was liberating. It gave us hope. It let us know we had allies and that at least 1 person out there knew what we were going through. I love seeing you guys getting into this kind of music and realizing its not just noise and that metal and rock has depth and meaning. Keep it up!!

Metallica has a few songs that got me through my depression in my 20's. This song was one of them. About 5 years ago, I crocheted a Stevie Nicks Duster sweater. It starts out white, going into gray and eventually black. I named the sweater Fade to Black.

The guy in the blue cap gets it. Metallica just hits different. The way they convey a story not only with Lyrics, but they way they match the music with the lyrics is unparalleled. Im glad you guys are learning that metal and rock is a LOT deeper than just loud noise and guitar riffs. Its so much more.

James Hetfield was 14 when his mother died. His father had left them, he left a note and just left. His parents didn’t believe in medicine. They were Christian scientists. His mother died of cancer, James and his sister just watched her fade away. There was no funeral. James is a pure genius imo for his writing.

This song made me cry and gave me home at the very same, the first time I heard it. This is one of a handful of songs that will get me emotionally every time. A lot of people made the mistake that this song was about suicide, but it was the depths of depression that can lead to suicide. I still remember the day I first heard this song, I was hanging out at my best friend's house after school, and he just got this album a couple of days ago. I broke down for a couple of minutes during the harmony and solo, because I felt that depression in my teen years. They say that depression is rage turned inside, and during the solo, its just constant building anger and rage and frustration.... such a wonderful song.

Fun Fact: This song was written about how they were feeling after most of their gear was stolen from their Uhaul. I've always interpreted it this way.
The solo is the man dying.
The ever increasing drum beat is meant to represent his dying rapid heartbeat and then it just all fades away. I rate Fade to black as one of the great musical pieces.

    • @evilestmonkeey

Gotta disagree. Respectfully. That last solo feels like a man standing on the ledge with his heart racing as he prepares to jump and maybe, just maybe having a moment of clarity and fade out is his heart calming as he climbs down and goes home. Might not be what the band felt but it feels right to me.

With the emphasis on the fading goodbye sounding like it's too late and all over now.

My brother in law took his own life after battling schizophrenia for 20years literally a week ago. This song takes an entirely new meaning if you've had someone you love kill themselves. I sit here typing this with tears streaming down my cheeks thinking of the pain and emptiness he felt. When he would get into a manic state he would disappear and another person would be there in front of your eyes. The line "I was me, but now he's gone" hits so hard for me right now.
I know this song means different things to different people, but the attitude of the dude in the Sox hat is coming across as disrespectful to those who lost their battles, to be taking it so lightly. I pray he doesn't have this happen to someone in his life so he can continue to happily enjoy this masterpiece. Someday I will too, but that day is not today as I sit heavy in my emotions for my brother in law.

This song, along with Metallica in general, saved my life. It was Metallica that inspired me to learn how to play guitar when I was 12. Learning and playing was something I could dedicate time to and not be out getting into shit. Mostly though, it was a massive emotional outlet. If I had a bad day, I’d come home and just rip out Metallica for a few hours. By the end, I’d feel better. Later on, when I was in the later parts of High School, on really bad days I would come home, put on Kill em All and play along all the way through 4 albums, until the end of And Justice for All. It would be a 4+ hour marathon of playing every song off all of their first four albums (which were all that were out at the time).
I can’t stress just how much having that outlet helped me. I can confidently say that I would have taken my own life in my teen years if I didn’t have guitar and Metallica in my life.
I finally got to meet them in 2009. I was at one of the lowest points in my life, having become disabled due to an accident the year before. That would ultimately cost me my career and my ability to walk any sort of distance. It also cost me the luxury of a physically pain free existence. I won the drawing for a meet and greet and had amazing seats to the show as well. My then 70 year old father came with me, it was his first music concert he’d ever been to. He enjoyed it, and remarked on just how much energy the band put out and the fans sent back to the band. I finally got to tell James, Kirk and Lars just how much the band meant to me and that they were responsible for saving my life. It’s a day I’ll never forget, and it’s even more special now, because my father has since passed away.

Just want to add to all the comments about how this song helped them through a dark time because it made them feel they weren't alone, and I very much relate to that...but they did something more than that. Even though there's no "happy ending" with the lyrics, the song itself is a triumph, because they channeled that pain into creating something beautiful and and powerful! And THAT is what helped them, and all of us who love this song, live to face, fight, embrace another day.

Boys, you have no idea how important this band is to me and this is my all time favorite song. I loved watching you react to this song, I could see you feel the music. I can never go back and listen to these Metallica songs for the first time but watching someone experience them for the first time is a close second. I look forward to any more Metallica videos y’all post.

You can't truly experience Metallica without the bass. It's on a whole nother level.

What Danielle said! And . . . that guitar solo outro at the end is my 2nd favorite guitar solo 🎸ever!!! 🤘🏼I grew up with this old school, early Metallica. It helped a ton of kids from my generation express their rage and angst. James Hetfield IS a lyrical genius and an amazing composer of GORGEOUS,, melancholy, expressive melodies! 🔥

It's so great when not only the music blows your mind, but then the lyrics are also incredible. Love it or hate it, metal rules. The talent, musicianship and song arrangements are phenomenal. ✌️

You guys nailed it. Guitar solos are the ultimate white boy fire shit. If my windows are down and my music is blaring, it’s gonna be a sick guitar solo and this is one of the very best. My favorite guitar solo, personally, up there with Freebird.

"That song was a big step for us. It was pretty much our first ballad, so we knew it would freak people out... Recording that song, I learned how frustrating acoustic guitar can be. You could hear every squeak, so I had to be careful. I wrote the song at a friend's house in New Jersey. I was pretty depressed at the time because our gear had just been stolen, and we had been thrown out of our manager's house for breaking shit and drinking his liquor cabinet dry. It's a suicide song, and we got a lot of flak for it, as if kids were killing themselves because of the song. But we also got hundreds of letters from kids telling us how they related to the song and that it made them feel better.
    " - James Hetfield Circ 2003

You guys don't ever mention this , but them songs were written and music scores were created by guys that were around 21 years old at the time , so far ahead mentally it's kind of frightening how well they describe each sentiment
    They were still kids
