This DIY charging station was built out of a necessity to find a spot for the three tablets constantly roaming our house from my wife and I’s three small roommates. I wanted it to be a fun woodworking project but mix in some cool technology. Enter the LEDs and arduino project. It was my first time working with arduino projects and current sensors and I didn’t get it exactly right. But I learned a few new things about electronics projects and this DIY charging table is going to be just what our family needs to organize the cell phones and tablets.

9:02 The Arduino Due has a scheduler library available, that allows you to create threads running independently from each other, so you can update more strips at a time without messing with timings and other complex things. You can make as many loop functions as you need. It even has a lot more pins and it's a lot faster

Due and scheduler are INSANE for this. Leave all the LEDs one strip, paint into a buffer (like a screen) and shift it out atomically. Tiny fast code. This is embedded mPU, not Microsoft bloatware.

Someone commented about a scheduler library, I didn't know that existed. I would have probably tried some interrupts and/or shape the code into a structure known as a finite state machine. And if that is not enough, brute force it with a faster Arduino, like the teensy 3.6 that thing clocks at 180MHz! Or if you get your hands on one, a teensy 4.0 that can go 800MHz! You have options my friend!

Very cool. Thanks for sharing this. Post a link to your current version of the Arduino code so folks can suggest some changes. My experience with things like this that exhibit erratic behavior is that the voltage sensor input needs to be "de-bounced;" meaning that there are very small variations in the sensor readings that should be ignored unless they last for a prolonged period of time (say, 100 milliseconds or so). Much fun. Thanx again....

I am far from an Arduino expert, but my first thought on the LED issues is floating pins. The pins if not set high or pulled down can be in a state where they are neither low or high and can result in random LED function.

Happy to help with your code! I've built many appliances with Arduino specifically, and have a degree in Computer Engineering with a specialty in Embedded Systems!

And for the record, I'm not smarter, you just lack the training; EVERYONE can code and build awesome things once they practice! Don't let a gap in knowledge ever cause you to back down from a project! Excellent first go!

I've got some considerable experience with arduino, throw up a copy of your code and I'll be happy to have a look over it.

The cool thing with the code is you can always change it up if you needed too 🔥🔥also a very cool build well done 👍

I tend to go way overboard with my tech...I'm an electrical engineer and a woodworker. I cant help it

My gut reaction to your flickering issue is that you probably have an input floating somewhere. That is, you have a connection(s) somewhere that isn't tied to ground or signal voltage (depending on your wiring) through a pullup or pulldown resistor. What tends to happen is that the input then picks up spurious signals from nearby ports or the environment and bounces between on and off or sits in the no-man's land between the two when not being explicitly driven. Generally you can get away with using the arduino's internal pullups so you don't have to run around adding a bunch of 10K resistors. :)

Awesome build! Only thing I would chance, would be adding a spot for wireless spot for phones :)

I saw the thumbnail and thought cool. He was loosing me at and drum sander, and when got to the x-carve and I stopped it.

You can do this without all the fancy tools :) Bit more labor intensive but it works. I'm just going to use a hand sander.....but then I'm also building this build in wireless charger instead so the only thing that shows is the light when it's charging or charged :)

Pretty great start for a prototype! This was inspiring enough to order an Arduino. Also, I noticed at 8:00 that your cut off snagged in the recess for the blade guard knife. I just had this issue as well when rabbeting. Would love to see your take on a temporary mod to the SawStop plate for this situation.
