@@JitteryJackanape every Animagus has to have an identifying feature (McGonagall has a fur pattern the same shape as her glasses around her eyes, Rita Skeeter has the pattern of her glasses on her wings). In Scabbers case, he has the missing finger as a rat aswell. But I guess it's not easy to see, especially if Peter knows Remus is around, it would be easy to place that paw out of sight
Hagrid is a lot like Pipin in Lord of the Rings. They're both foolish and make mistakes and don't overcome their foolishness by the end of the story but they remain good, loyal and supportive loving characters. And if not for them in both stories the world very easy (especially in LotR) could have fallen to evil. I think it's important to have characters like Hagrid and Pipin because they show that you don't need to be an all knowing wizard or a strong warrior. It only matters that they have a pure heart and mean well. Especially when they make mistakes that's what makes them relatable and loveable
Right on. Hagrid is one of my favorite characters because he personifies innocence along with a deeply engrained feeling of defending those around him. He is an amazing character.
I think Ron could also know that dragon breeding law off the top of his head because of his brother Charlie. And I would think Charlie and Hagrid knew each other so I took Ron’s Hermione-style snippy tone to be because Ron might have seen Hagrid’s behavior contradicting Charlie’s description of Hagrid’s kindness and protection of magical creatures that he experienced while at Hogwarts.
good point. what came to my mind was, that one of ron's roles in the golden trio, especially in the first years, was the kid who grew up in the wizarding world as a wizard, while harry and hermione did not, so he was kind of their guide. after all, in the books, he's the one reminding hermione that she's a witch.

A boy who grew up in a certain environment with certain people. The same way the 11 year old son of a nurse might assume that "everyone knows" that hospitals have canteens
My fiancé pointed this out to me after being a fan for years and she’s on her like 2nd rewatch: Voldemort HATES Hagrid. There are weird occasions of Voldemort specifically picking on Hagrid and yea he’s a half giant so obviously he hates him but it’s to a weird degree with Hagrid

One thing you didn't mention was that Hagrid also got Aragog his mate, which means that he bred the spiders in that forest (next to a school), making it more dangerous than ever.
The issue is Hagid has no guile. He likes and believes in most everyone. It takes him aback when someone disappoints him. I think think this is why Dumbledore trusts him. I love Hagrid.
Hagrid is basically the reason why Harry survives every year. He's a key to something that helps the story go along. Hagrid is the wizard god of luck to me.

Ok, but hear me out: Jason Mamoa as Hagrid. You cannot tell me that he does not look, and act, like a man who would be excited to own a three headed dog, name it fluffy, and play it lullabys to help it sleep at night. Everything Hagrid says, and does, makes so much sense if I picture Jason Mamoa while reading the books

Fluffy is such a missed opportunity. Hogwarts having a giant 3 headed dog that sort of just patrols the grounds and keeps dangerous creatures from wandering in would be awesome! And of course we could have a person ride Fluffy into battle or it battles say the giant squid, or aragog. That'd be cool monster mayhem at hogwarts would be awesome.
To be fair I don't think Norbert-- or any of Hagrid's side quests for the trio-- was that much of a secret; Charlie's friends couldn't have flown in over the wall to pick him up unless Dumbledore had already dropped the protective enchantments to let them through. Hagrid was as much a lesson for Harry as any other part of the plan. He had to have a sense of noblesse oblige to do what he had to do in the end.
Actually aside from his penchant for having dangerous (and sometimes illegal) creatures, I would say the worst thing about Hagrid is that he seems kind of prejudiced against non-magic beings. He uses “Muggle” almost like a slur against the Dursleys, and he calls Filch a “sneaking Squib” in HBP which also sounds like he’s using that term in a derogatory way too. But someone like Hermione is okay, because she can actually do magic. Also it wasn’t cool when he gave Dudley a pig’s tail. In the movie at least Dudley was eating Harry’s cake, but in the book he just does that because Uncle Vernon insults Dumbledore. And we know Dudley is somewhat traumatized by this too (who wouldn’t be!)

In the book, it’s Hagrid who tells Harry that there wasn’t a witch or wizard that went bad that wasn’t in Slytherin. But he would’ve 100% believed that Sirius was in Tom’s circle at this point. So either this is a continuity issue or maybe Hagrid just decided to count Sirius as a Slytherin instead of a Gryffindor because his whole family were in Slytherin.

In defence of Hagrid: He using "Muggle" like a slur against dursleys is cze they are the bad ones. That doesn't mean he had a hatred towards muggles. Calling Filch a "Sneaking Squib" is just the way Filch is. He is indeed a Sneaking Squib, not to forget he always kept following Dumbledore's army nd provided information to Umbridge who was as bad as voldemort himself. Who wouldn't call Filch so? If we talk about Slytherins, they proved themself to be the bad guys, except a few including Slughorn himself. Harry wasn't biased towards Slughorn either. At last, He always praised nd supported Hermione, who was a muggle born. He never showed any kinnda hatred towards her parents either. So in conclusion Hagrid never hesitates to embarrass the ones who're actually evil. He's good towards the ones who're good in person nd bad towards the ones who are evil. Not to forget, he never gave up on Draco even tho Draco was the one to put Hagrid in accusations many times.

While I don't hate Hagrid, he does annoy me a lot. I understand that he doesn't recognize danger the same way because of his own durability, but how can he not understand the kids can get hurt? Hermione is right in book 5 when she says Hagrid doesn't make it easy on himself or them.
Well, Hogwarts and magic IS dangerous. I often think about this when i decide to rewatch and re-read the books. The amount of times a student can be gravely injured from just attending an average day during their time there. Quidditch has proven to be deadly; but it's just a part of that world. Potions can be dangerous to esp with inexperienced students making unstable concoctions. Transfiguration and apparition can cause lasting disfiguration. Not to say Hagrid isn't flawed for exposing the kids to ILLEGAL creatures, but they would come across dangerous magical creatures outside Hogwarts too. So maybe in his eyes, danger is expected; and Hogwarts is the place to be to learn, explore, and experiment with the magical world under the proper supervision and guidance.
Sad thought. Dumbledore kept Hagrid around because of his connection to Tom Riddle. Hagrid was framed by Tom Riddle. Dumbledore has a habit of keeping people connected with Voldemort close for their safety. And it was a bonus that Hagrid was so loyal and likable.
Not to mention he was way more useful than trelawney, who was granted sanctuary by Dumbledore as well. I'm also miffed that we won't ever see the final duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and I wholly subscribe to the idea that Hagrid and his expertise of magical creatures were essential in the background of the fight

Has anyone else ever considered or covered that maybe Hargrid revealed those secrets to Harry because of the affects of that small piece of Tom Riddle’s soul inside him? Riddle himself said that he’s quite persuasive. That would also explain why Hagrid revealed the Fluffy secrets directly to old you-know-who. Oh and it would fit for Dobby’s little info slips to Harry too.
I've been reading the books to someone who has only ever seen the movies and has forgotten most of them. When I was reading the end of PoA, it occurred to me suddenly that Harry and Hermione see the moon darting in and out behind clouds while the party is in the Shack and H&H are waiting for themselves to reemerge. To me, this begs the question: if the moon had already risen an hour or more before Lupin eventually transforms, what is it that triggers the transformation? Is it exposure to the moonlight? If so, why not simply hide out in a windowless room until the moon sets? Might be the basis for a theory in there somewhere.
Hagrid sees the world with a child like innocence, which combined with his natural affinity for creatures, causes issues. Animals can sense person’s character much better than we can. Animals know Hagrid is a friend and would fight to defend them, so they are drawn to him and love him. Hagrid’s innocence causes him to assume all humans are like him as far as how they would treat an innocent animal. He also assumes the animals will react to other humans the same way, basically thinking “new friend” and not “lunch”. My grandmother was one of those people animals were naturally drawn to. An animal that hated everyone else just loved her.
The whole being in Slytherin theory is really what I really hate that people say that he was in Slytherin. Tom Riddle was such a charismatic guy he probably just befriended him with the whole half and half connection and that's why they were on a first name basis.
It is odd to think that Voldemort and Hagrid actually were friends. It was probably legitimate too; Tom had no reason to tolerate Hagrid otherwise. It's a deeply unpleasant secret that neither ever admitted too, nor did anyone likely know, not even Dumbledore. Even Harry never made the connection.
@@Cailus3542 Tom Riddle was a calculating and devious person that used all of his resources to get what he wanted or do. He also probably thought that it would be a nice scapegoat in the future that's why he befriended Hagrid. Also probably Dumbledore told Hagrid that it was probably Tom Riddle but he couldn't prove it. As some form of a consolation to letting him know that he wasn't the one that opened the chamber secrets.

Sending Harry and Ron into the Forbidden Forest to face a giant spider his entire family is definitely not a good idea no matter how you look at it. But he was the one to escort Harry out of the Dursley’s during the night of the seven potters which was arguably the most dangerous job, so I think poor judgement but good guy!
So in the wrap up, describing how Harry has 3 father figures that give him parts of his personality totally reminded me of classic cartoon Sleeping Beauty having 3 faeries and Maleficent all giving gifts to the baby- Voldemort gives him the scar and basically curses him to die like Maleficent. Fauna (green fairy) and Hagrid are the gentle one, Dumbledore is Flora (red fairy) the wise leader, and Sirius is the spicy but loyal one like Merryweather (blue fairy)
I’d love to see a video about the evolution of Dumbledore’s “for the greater good” mentality from his younger years up until his older years during HP. He seems to have kept that mentality with his plan revolving Harry ultimately sacrificing himself for he greater good of Wizardkind, but his methods and ideology changed completely

Hagrid embodies the dangerous animals that he cares for. Just like those creatures, at times he’s wild, fierce, independent, strong, scary, and protective, but on the other side of the Galleon he’s loyal, gentle, kind, caring, and generous.
I actually forget that we all started the book series with Hagrid, kidnapping a 15 month old baby from his rightful guardian, after the baby’s parents murder, and on the orders of a old man not related to the family.
I love listening to the podcast and then seeing videos that clearly grew from the podcast conversations. I’m loving how the podcast is starting to inform the channel and expand on topics that don’t fit in the episodes! ALSO - where did Fluffy go? Did he just stay in the castle? Was he given away? Does he live in the forest somewhere? Was he put to death? I need closure on that dog!
I don't think Hagrid is a bad character, but I do think he's a terrible teacher. Book 4 and the whole skrewts fiasco was unforgivable, students were being injured left and right, and Hagrid would look at the students getting hurt and be happy about how the skrewts seemed to be having fun. That is horrendous teaching. The simple fact that every single student in Harry's class, including the trio who actually liked Hagrid, dropped his class in year 6 is a testimony to how bad of a teacher he was.
I actually feel like this video made me move to the "there is no defense of Hagrid" camp. Previously I was like oooh it's just Hagrid, looking at individual pieces. But when you lay everything out including his lack of character growth it becomes apparent that there is something wrong with him! Lol
Fluffy was just used as the distraction for professor Quirrell to go to. So it would have been a good first defense until Harry saw what he needed to see in the mirror.
fluffy would have never been a serious obstacle for any serious dark wizard. he was probably just there to keep students out, so they don't run into stuff like the troll, or snapes potion riddle.

Harry's predicted power against Voldemort is heavily based on Lily's sacrifice, but that was only made possible by Snape begging for her life to Voldemort. If he has no reason for that, Lily's death is not her choice, so it can't save Harry. - What if Lucius Malfoy gave Draco the diary? - Draco would have been much more influenced by the Horcrux, and he would have probably died before Harry & co could solve the puzzle. Lucius would have then left Voldemort's side before his return, but no essential events change from that, apart from Snape getting the job of killing Dumbledore without anyone having to try first. - What if Snape overhears the prophecy? - Nothing would have changed if Voldemort hears it in its entirety. He was too arrogant to think of any risk. After he returned, he saw time and time again how much power Harry has over him, but he just blindly went on anyway.
I love this video and I love these guys theories but my favorite thing is how they turn to the text to attempt to prove the theories even the ones that are like alternate timelines. They use character cannon to justify what choices they think each character would make. That kind of obsessive deep diving is pure gold to me.
Hi Ben! Great video! One thing I'd point out is that by the time of Sorcerer's Stone, Hagrid is already in his sixties, so the seven years we spend with him over the story is only a small fraction of his overall life. He's done tons of character growth _when he was younger._
So Hagrid used to be even more evil when he was younger? He should have developed common sense and emphaty for the students. Instead he puts them in danger for his delusions about monsters.
I do not think of it a pre-existing "hole" (as in created via "a drilled opening"). I suspect that the magic that "exists within" (or "embodies") the core object finds a way to make a request to the living cells of the organic material that makes up the wand to part (or open up), in order to allow the core to enter into and join up with the wood or vine. This joining gives the magical core a home, and the core in turn, provides the living cells a chance to remain alive and sentient. (or something like that) Whad'ya think? @@jacearmor5274
One would think that transfiguration magic would suffice for implanting a wand core into a hunk of magical wood before carving it. Considering you can turn yourself into a chair to hide yourself, that is not outside the realm of possibility
3:12 - I might also suggest the possibility that Fluffy *is* friendly under most circumstances but because we only ever see Fluffy in the one circumstance where he isn't we don't have a biased opinion. It's like pit bulls - they're really friendly dogs in most circumstances but they're also capable of extreme aggression so you tend not to hear about them being playful idiots who love head scritches and treats, but *do* tend to hear about them mauling children to death. Fluffy could be similar: Three good boys who are just doing a job that they're really good at for their master, and that job just happens to be "Scare kids off and maybe be prepared to tear a person in thirds for trying to get in the tunnel under your bed."
I really like Hagrid. There is however one thing I cannot defend and I am surprised it wasn't mentioned: Giving Dudley a pig tail. Dudley wasn't likeable, but he and Hagrid had never interacted, although since Hagrid knew where slept he also may have known how Dudley behaved. But Dudley had done nothing wrong in this scene and Hagrid attacked him because of his father's behaviour. This is basically like Snape bullying Harry and hardly forgivable.
I think this can be explained by Rowling's hating fat people, and even fat characters she herself thought up. Almost all unlikable characters are fat. And just look up how many times she (through Harry) in different but always denigrating ways says how enormous and fat Dudley is in the books, especially the first one.
@@Greenscreenkid7400 In the book he didn't steal anything Hagrid did it as a reaction to Vernon insulting Dumbledore without Dudley doing anything. Also the tail had to be removed in a hospital, so it was not really temporary.
When I rewatched Sorcerer's Stone recently, I suddenly got the idea that Hagrid may be under a spell (presumably from Dumbledore) that causes him to involuntarily reveal information to the Trio. He seems genuinely surprised every time he says something he shouldn't have. He knows he's not supposed to reveal this information, but he does it anyway. And you'll notice that this "habit" of his does not continue in the subsequent movies or books. After the philosopher's stone is saved (and then destroyed) the spell wears off and Hagrid can talk without revealing sensitive information for the rest of the story.
Hagrid will always be my favorite Harry Potter character. He's so simple, so likable and one of the first characters we ever meet. I miss Robbie Coltrane with all my heart, but we'll always have Hagrid.

Haven’t watched it yet but I can tell you now, Hagrid needs no defense. Same with McGonagall, Mr and Mrs Weasley, Neville, and Luna. I’ve noticed that these characters seem to be more loved and criticism-free than even the Golden Trio.

It's just, for as beloved as the series is, there is a LOT of glaring spots where logic and commonsense should have come into play but didn't for the sake of the story and takes a lot of mind bending to justify.
I absolutely despise Mrs Weasley. She’s very judgmental of her children, and other women. Plus she needs to get a job. Her kids are all in school by the second book.

Totally agree that she needs a job; after Ginny's gone to Hogwarts she doesn't even have any kids at home half the year, so she would absolutely have the time and she has marketable skills and is intelligent enough. She's also the one who wasn't satisfied with sons and basically had babies for her own selfish desire for a daughter, which directly led to her children all suffering from the resulting financial hardships. Also, Ginny is very meh to me. I really don't like how she treated Fleur, although I guess you could pass it off as her being influenced by Molly.
Good intentions really don't excuse bad judgement. It's frankly a miracle that in over 50 years, Hagrid DIDN'T get someone killed. Other than Aragog, there's no indication most of the creatures have close to human level intelligence. The beings Harry deals with (Lupin, Dobby, etc.) do. It's really not a fair comparison to compare creatures who act on instinct and maybe some training to sentient beings. Replace "magical creature" with lion or tiger and would you want them near a school? Even tamed ones have mauled their owners when over excited (see Roy of Siegfried and Roy fame).
I don’t think people would like Hagrid near as much if it wasn’t for Robbie Coltrane’s performance. His charm and warmth saves a lot of the character flaws and I can’t read any of the books without having his face and voice in my mind
I love Hagrid, and always have, he's such a sweetheart. Literally a gentle giant. He has so much love to give and so few people who want it and give love back to him.
My headcanon for Ron knowing the law about dragons is because Charlie asked for one at least every Christmas, Easter, and birthday and molly had to repeat that law every time. And second, the real reason they got the dragon up to the tower undetected was the cloak, which is a deadly hallow and protects the user from detection
my headcanon: hagrid had a license to breed the skrewts, as they where intendet for the maze. since he did not know how many would make it through to adulthood he needed to have multiple, but in the end of the year it paid off, since one of the skrewts is available for the maze. actaully it would've been something for the 6th year students, but the felt like giving harry the advantage of knowing the creatures in advance without telling him directly. (thats also why there were no consequences investigating these things after the rita skeeter article)
2:44 I don’t know, my pitador is so aggressively affectionate, most people are scared of him. My family claims I’m a mix of Hagrid and Mad Eye so I’m fairly partial to Hagrid. In fact, every Halloween, my daughter wants me to wear a brown coat and walk my pitador (who’s completely black) around the neighborhood as Hagrid.
Love the Harry Potter content as always, but there was a period where you guys were doing Last Airbender stuff and I feel like there is far more to be mined there than you guys touched on. And the iron is hot for striking now with the live action remake coming out in February.
My only issue with Hagrid is that his characterization and development seems fairly shallow for how prominent a character he is. He's a walking plot device, there to move the story ahead, have Harry learn something he needs to, put Harry in a position to Do The Thing, etc. His entire character can be summarized in a few sentences in a way that equally prominent characters like Draco, Snape, or Sirius can't.

I think Hagrid is a kid on the inside, so he sees Harry as an equal. And Harry responds well to Hagrid because he isn’t like most adults. Harry often defends and sticks up for Hagrid the way he sticks up for any friend that is getting picked on.
Ron likely knew the dragon fact because his brother works with them. It probably is still common knowledge, but it's not odd Ron would know a more niche fact about dragons. Also, I've seen crab turtles in games from Japan so maybe it's a thing.

And then there's a scene towards the end of book five, after Sirius dies, where Harry abrupty excuses himself because Hagrid is incapable of understanding the grief he's dealing with.

That is probably the absolutely most insane variant of the "what if good person is actually a secret villain" trope that i have ever seen and I've seen some insane stuff there.
Do you think Dumbledore put the stone in the mirror after he had Harry tested on Christmas, or was it in there all year and he just moved the mirror with the stone in it. This would also explain why Snape was told to be on extra alert as you talked about in a recent video. Side note I've wondered if the mirror was an extra protection Dumbledore thought to add after the break-in on Halloween.
I realized something while reading the Harry Potter books for the 20+ time. How strong is the Fidelus Charm and other protections on 12 Grimauld Place? I mean with the fall of the Ministry, the Death Eaters were breaking into all sorts of Order locations, and the Order didn't really manage to fully hide without the use of the Fidelus Charm. On top of that they managed to use it a base for a couple of months, all while breaking the Taboo constantly without any ramifications. If I remember correctly I believe they speak him name around 16 times and that is before Lupin shows up to check on them.
My headcanon about blast ended skrewts is that Hagring got permission, because they were used for triwizard tournament and since only source about crossbreeding came from Rita Skeeter's article they might as well come from Australia and aboriginal wizards call them Nopes.
Hagrid is like Forrest Gump. Both such good pure people that they can come off as a goofus. Both maybe not all there? But 100% brilliant in their own ways.
I'm gonna have to argue with your appraisal of Fluffy here. Fluffy is a _guard dog,_ not a pet or teaching aid. He's trained to chase off intruders, and was specifically in place to deal with some very dangerous people. Barking at, chasing, and biting people who try to get through that room was his _job._ A well-trained guard dog is not dangerous at all when "off-duty", and, I should point out, the one person we see get bitten by Fluffy while working was more annoyed than actually hurt.

@@JitteryJackanape every Animagus has to have an identifying feature (McGonagall has a fur pattern the same shape as her glasses around her eyes, Rita Skeeter has the pattern of her glasses on her wings). In Scabbers case, he has the missing finger as a rat aswell. But I guess it's not easy to see, especially if Peter knows Remus is around, it would be easy to place that paw out of sight

Hagrid is a lot like Pipin in Lord of the Rings. They're both foolish and make mistakes and don't overcome their foolishness by the end of the story but they remain good, loyal and supportive loving characters. And if not for them in both stories the world very easy (especially in LotR) could have fallen to evil.
I think it's important to have characters like Hagrid and Pipin because they show that you don't need to be an all knowing wizard or a strong warrior. It only matters that they have a pure heart and mean well. Especially when they make mistakes that's what makes them relatable and loveable

Right on. Hagrid is one of my favorite characters because he personifies innocence along with a deeply engrained feeling of defending those around him. He is an amazing character.
I think Ron could also know that dragon breeding law off the top of his head because of his brother Charlie. And I would think Charlie and Hagrid knew each other so I took Ron’s Hermione-style snippy tone to be because Ron might have seen Hagrid’s behavior contradicting Charlie’s description of Hagrid’s kindness and protection of magical creatures that he experienced while at Hogwarts.

what came to my mind was, that one of ron's roles in the golden trio, especially in the first years, was the kid who grew up in the wizarding world as a wizard, while harry and hermione did not, so he was kind of their guide. after all, in the books, he's the one reminding hermione that she's a witch.

My fiancé pointed this out to me after being a fan for years and she’s on her like 2nd rewatch: Voldemort HATES Hagrid. There are weird occasions of Voldemort specifically picking on Hagrid and yea he’s a half giant so obviously he hates him but it’s to a weird degree with Hagrid

Fluffy is such a missed opportunity. Hogwarts having a giant 3 headed dog that sort of just patrols the grounds and keeps dangerous creatures from wandering in would be awesome! And of course we could have a person ride Fluffy into battle or it battles say the giant squid, or aragog. That'd be cool monster mayhem at hogwarts would be awesome.
To be fair I don't think Norbert-- or any of Hagrid's side quests for the trio-- was that much of a secret; Charlie's friends couldn't have flown in over the wall to pick him up unless Dumbledore had already dropped the protective enchantments to let them through.
Hagrid was as much a lesson for Harry as any other part of the plan. He had to have a sense of noblesse oblige to do what he had to do in the end.
Actually aside from his penchant for having dangerous (and sometimes illegal) creatures, I would say the worst thing about Hagrid is that he seems kind of prejudiced against non-magic beings.
He uses “Muggle” almost like a slur against the Dursleys, and he calls Filch a “sneaking Squib” in HBP which also sounds like he’s using that term in a derogatory way too. But someone like Hermione is okay, because she can actually do magic.
Also it wasn’t cool when he gave Dudley a pig’s tail. In the movie at least Dudley was eating Harry’s cake, but in the book he just does that because Uncle Vernon insults Dumbledore. And we know Dudley is somewhat traumatized by this too (who wouldn’t be!)
He's also biased towards Slytherins.

In the book, it’s Hagrid who tells Harry that there wasn’t a witch or wizard that went bad that wasn’t in Slytherin. But he would’ve 100% believed that Sirius was in Tom’s circle at this point. So either this is a continuity issue or maybe Hagrid just decided to count Sirius as a Slytherin instead of a Gryffindor because his whole family were in Slytherin.

In defence of Hagrid:

If we talk about Slytherins, they proved themself to be the bad guys, except a few including Slughorn himself. Harry wasn't biased towards Slughorn either.
At last, He always praised nd supported Hermione, who was a muggle born. He never showed any kinnda hatred towards her parents either.
So in conclusion Hagrid never hesitates to embarrass the ones who're actually evil. He's good towards the ones who're good in person nd bad towards the ones who are evil.

Well, Hogwarts and magic IS dangerous. I often think about this when i decide to rewatch and re-read the books. The amount of times a student can be gravely injured from just attending an average day during their time there. Quidditch has proven to be deadly; but it's just a part of that world. Potions can be dangerous to esp with inexperienced students making unstable concoctions. Transfiguration and apparition can cause lasting disfiguration. Not to say Hagrid isn't flawed for exposing the kids to ILLEGAL creatures, but they would come across dangerous magical creatures outside Hogwarts too. So maybe in his eyes, danger is expected; and Hogwarts is the place to be to learn, explore, and experiment with the magical world under the proper supervision and guidance.
Sad thought. Dumbledore kept Hagrid around because of his connection to Tom Riddle. Hagrid was framed by Tom Riddle. Dumbledore has a habit of keeping people connected with Voldemort close for their safety. And it was a bonus that Hagrid was so loyal and likable.
Not to mention he was way more useful than trelawney, who was granted sanctuary by Dumbledore as well.
I'm also miffed that we won't ever see the final duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and I wholly subscribe to the idea that Hagrid and his expertise of magical creatures were essential in the background of the fight

I've been reading the books to someone who has only ever seen the movies and has forgotten most of them. When I was reading the end of PoA, it occurred to me suddenly that Harry and Hermione see the moon darting in and out behind clouds while the party is in the Shack and H&H are waiting for themselves to reemerge. To me, this begs the question: if the moon had already risen an hour or more before Lupin eventually transforms, what is it that triggers the transformation? Is it exposure to the moonlight? If so, why not simply hide out in a windowless room until the moon sets? Might be the basis for a theory in there somewhere.

I think Ron knowing that fact about Dragon breeding becoming illegal may also be testament to the fact that he grew up with Charlie in the house.
Hagrid sees the world with a child like innocence, which combined with his natural affinity for creatures, causes issues. Animals can sense person’s character much better than we can. Animals know Hagrid is a friend and would fight to defend them, so they are drawn to him and love him. Hagrid’s innocence causes him to assume all humans are like him as far as how they would treat an innocent animal. He also assumes the animals will react to other humans the same way, basically thinking “new friend” and not “lunch”. My grandmother was one of those people animals were naturally drawn to. An animal that hated everyone else just loved her.
The whole being in Slytherin theory is really what I really hate that people say that he was in Slytherin. Tom Riddle was such a charismatic guy he probably just befriended him with the whole half and half connection and that's why they were on a first name basis.
It is odd to think that Voldemort and Hagrid actually were friends. It was probably legitimate too; Tom had no reason to tolerate Hagrid otherwise. It's a deeply unpleasant secret that neither ever admitted too, nor did anyone likely know, not even Dumbledore. Even Harry never made the connection.
@@Cailus3542 Tom Riddle was a calculating and devious person that used all of his resources to get what he wanted or do. He also probably thought that it would be a nice scapegoat in the future that's why he befriended Hagrid. Also probably Dumbledore told Hagrid that it was probably Tom Riddle but he couldn't prove it. As some form of a consolation to letting him know that he wasn't the one that opened the chamber secrets.

Sending Harry and Ron into the Forbidden Forest to face a giant spider his entire family is definitely not a good idea no matter how you look at it. But he was the one to escort Harry out of the Dursley’s during the night of the seven potters which was arguably the most dangerous job, so I think poor judgement but good guy!

So in the wrap up, describing how Harry has 3 father figures that give him parts of his personality totally reminded me of classic cartoon Sleeping Beauty having 3 faeries and Maleficent all giving gifts to the baby- Voldemort gives him the scar and basically curses him to die like Maleficent. Fauna (green fairy) and Hagrid are the gentle one, Dumbledore is Flora (red fairy) the wise leader, and Sirius is the spicy but loyal one like Merryweather (blue fairy)

Hagrid embodies the dangerous animals that he cares for. Just like those creatures, at times he’s wild, fierce, independent, strong, scary, and protective, but on the other side of the Galleon he’s loyal, gentle, kind, caring, and generous.
I actually forget that we all started the book series with Hagrid, kidnapping a 15 month old baby from his rightful guardian, after the baby’s parents murder, and on the orders of a old man not related to the family.

I don't think Hagrid is a bad character, but I do think he's a terrible teacher. Book 4 and the whole skrewts fiasco was unforgivable, students were being injured left and right, and Hagrid would look at the students getting hurt and be happy about how the skrewts seemed to be having fun. That is horrendous teaching. The simple fact that every single student in Harry's class, including the trio who actually liked Hagrid, dropped his class in year 6 is a testimony to how bad of a teacher he was.
I actually feel like this video made me move to the "there is no defense of Hagrid" camp. Previously I was like oooh it's just Hagrid, looking at individual pieces. But when you lay everything out including his lack of character growth it becomes apparent that there is something wrong with him! Lol
Fluffy was just used as the distraction for professor Quirrell to go to. So it would have been a good first defense until Harry saw what he needed to see in the mirror.
fluffy would have never been a serious obstacle for any serious dark wizard. he was probably just there to keep students out, so they don't run into stuff like the troll, or snapes potion riddle.

Harry's predicted power against Voldemort is heavily based on Lily's sacrifice, but that was only made possible by Snape begging for her life to Voldemort. If he has no reason for that, Lily's death is not her choice, so it can't save Harry.
- What if Lucius Malfoy gave Draco the diary? - Draco would have been much more influenced by the Horcrux, and he would have probably died before Harry & co could solve the puzzle. Lucius would have then left Voldemort's side before his return, but no essential events change from that, apart from Snape getting the job of killing Dumbledore without anyone having to try first.
- What if Snape overhears the prophecy? - Nothing would have changed if Voldemort hears it in its entirety. He was too arrogant to think of any risk. After he returned, he saw time and time again how much power Harry has over him, but he just blindly went on anyway.

I love this video and I love these guys theories but my favorite thing is how they turn to the text to attempt to prove the theories even the ones that are like alternate timelines. They use character cannon to justify what choices they think each character would make. That kind of obsessive deep diving is pure gold to me.

Great video! One thing I'd point out is that by the time of Sorcerer's Stone, Hagrid is already in his sixties, so the seven years we spend with him over the story is only a small fraction of his overall life. He's done tons of character growth _when he was younger._
So Hagrid used to be even more evil when he was younger? He should have developed common sense and emphaty for the students. Instead he puts them in danger for his delusions about monsters.

There's usually a hole at the bottom of the wand's hilt for the core to slide in.
I do not think of it a pre-existing "hole" (as in created via "a drilled opening"). I suspect that the magic that "exists within" (or "embodies") the core object finds a way to make a request to the living cells of the organic material that makes up the wand to part (or open up), in order to allow the core to enter into and join up with the wood or vine. This joining gives the magical core a home, and the core in turn, provides the living cells a chance to remain alive and sentient. (or something like that) Whad'ya think? @@jacearmor5274

One thing I was not expecting in this video was a reference to the bite of 87'. You got me good with that one.
3:12 - I might also suggest the possibility that Fluffy *is* friendly under most circumstances but because we only ever see Fluffy in the one circumstance where he isn't we don't have a biased opinion. It's like pit bulls - they're really friendly dogs in most circumstances but they're also capable of extreme aggression so you tend not to hear about them being playful idiots who love head scritches and treats, but *do* tend to hear about them mauling children to death. Fluffy could be similar: Three good boys who are just doing a job that they're really good at for their master, and that job just happens to be "Scare kids off and maybe be prepared to tear a person in thirds for trying to get in the tunnel under your bed."
I really like Hagrid. There is however one thing I cannot defend and I am surprised it wasn't mentioned: Giving Dudley a pig tail. Dudley wasn't likeable, but he and Hagrid had never interacted, although since Hagrid knew where slept he also may have known how Dudley behaved. But Dudley had done nothing wrong in this scene and Hagrid attacked him because of his father's behaviour. This is basically like Snape bullying Harry and hardly forgivable.
I think this can be explained by Rowling's hating fat people, and even fat characters she herself thought up. Almost all unlikable characters are fat. And just look up how many times she (through Harry) in different but always denigrating ways says how enormous and fat Dudley is in the books, especially the first one.

When I rewatched Sorcerer's Stone recently, I suddenly got the idea that Hagrid may be under a spell (presumably from Dumbledore) that causes him to involuntarily reveal information to the Trio. He seems genuinely surprised every time he says something he shouldn't have. He knows he's not supposed to reveal this information, but he does it anyway. And you'll notice that this "habit" of his does not continue in the subsequent movies or books. After the philosopher's stone is saved (and then destroyed) the spell wears off and Hagrid can talk without revealing sensitive information for the rest of the story.
Hagrid will always be my favorite Harry Potter character. He's so simple, so likable and one of the first characters we ever meet. I miss Robbie Coltrane with all my heart, but we'll always have Hagrid.

Haven’t watched it yet but I can tell you now, Hagrid needs no defense. Same with McGonagall, Mr and Mrs Weasley, Neville, and Luna. I’ve noticed that these characters seem to be more loved and criticism-free than even the Golden Trio.
i have seen subtle hints at mrs weasley hate in fanfics where she's written more overbearing and rude, i don't agree with it but i have seen it

It's just, for as beloved as the series is, there is a LOT of glaring spots where logic and commonsense should have come into play but didn't for the sake of the story and takes a lot of mind bending to justify.
I absolutely despise Mrs Weasley. She’s very judgmental of her children, and other women. Plus she needs to get a job. Her kids are all in school by the second book.

Totally agree that she needs a job; after Ginny's gone to Hogwarts she doesn't even have any kids at home half the year, so she would absolutely have the time and she has marketable skills and is intelligent enough. She's also the one who wasn't satisfied with sons and basically had babies for her own selfish desire for a daughter, which directly led to her children all suffering from the resulting financial hardships. Also, Ginny is very meh to me. I really don't like how she treated Fleur, although I guess you could pass it off as her being influenced by Molly.
When I read the first 2 books to my kids and Hagrid would show up, my daughter would always say "oh no, now what?"
Good intentions really don't excuse bad judgement. It's frankly a miracle that in over 50 years, Hagrid DIDN'T get someone killed. Other than Aragog, there's no indication most of the creatures have close to human level intelligence. The beings Harry deals with (Lupin, Dobby, etc.) do. It's really not a fair comparison to compare creatures who act on instinct and maybe some training to sentient beings. Replace "magical creature" with lion or tiger and would you want them near a school? Even tamed ones have mauled their owners when over excited (see Roy of Siegfried and Roy fame).

I don’t think people would like Hagrid near as much if it wasn’t for Robbie Coltrane’s performance. His charm and warmth saves a lot of the character flaws and I can’t read any of the books without having his face and voice in my mind

I love Hagrid, and always have, he's such a sweetheart. Literally a gentle giant. He has so much love to give and so few people who want it and give love back to him.
My headcanon for Ron knowing the law about dragons is because Charlie asked for one at least every Christmas, Easter, and birthday and molly had to repeat that law every time.
And second, the real reason they got the dragon up to the tower undetected was the cloak, which is a deadly hallow and protects the user from detection
my headcanon: hagrid had a license to breed the skrewts, as they where intendet for the maze. since he did not know how many would make it through to adulthood he needed to have multiple, but in the end of the year it paid off, since one of the skrewts is available for the maze.
actaully it would've been something for the 6th year students, but the felt like giving harry the advantage of knowing the creatures in advance without telling him directly.

My family claims I’m a mix of Hagrid and Mad Eye so I’m fairly partial to Hagrid. In fact, every Halloween, my daughter wants me to wear a brown coat and walk my pitador (who’s completely black) around the neighborhood as Hagrid.
Love the Harry Potter content as always, but there was a period where you guys were doing Last Airbender stuff and I feel like there is far more to be mined there than you guys touched on. And the iron is hot for striking now with the live action remake coming out in February.

As someone who likes bears and tigers, I’m afraid I’ll ignore the dangers they pose like Hagrid does with the magical beasts.
My only issue with Hagrid is that his characterization and development seems fairly shallow for how prominent a character he is. He's a walking plot device, there to move the story ahead, have Harry learn something he needs to, put Harry in a position to Do The Thing, etc. His entire character can be summarized in a few sentences in a way that equally prominent characters like Draco, Snape, or Sirius can't.

I think Hagrid is a kid on the inside, so he sees Harry as an equal. And Harry responds well to Hagrid because he isn’t like most adults. Harry often defends and sticks up for Hagrid the way he sticks up for any friend that is getting picked on.
Ron likely knew the dragon fact because his brother works with them. It probably is still common knowledge, but it's not odd Ron would know a more niche fact about dragons.
Also, I've seen crab turtles in games from Japan so maybe it's a thing.

I recently listened to the series over again after only having read the series once many years ago, and I thought the same thing that Hagrid was blundering oaf who had no sense of how dangerous and careless his monsters were.
And then there's a scene towards the end of book five, after Sirius dies, where Harry abrupty excuses himself because Hagrid is incapable of understanding the grief he's dealing with.

That is probably the absolutely most insane variant of the "what if good person is actually a secret villain" trope that i have ever seen and I've seen some insane stuff there.
Do you think Dumbledore put the stone in the mirror after he had Harry tested on Christmas, or was it in there all year and he just moved the mirror with the stone in it. This would also explain why Snape was told to be on extra alert as you talked about in a recent video.

I realized something while reading the Harry Potter books for the 20+ time. How strong is the Fidelus Charm and other protections on 12 Grimauld Place? I mean with the fall of the Ministry, the Death Eaters were breaking into all sorts of Order locations, and the Order didn't really manage to fully hide without the use of the Fidelus Charm. On top of that they managed to use it a base for a couple of months, all while breaking the Taboo constantly without any ramifications. If I remember correctly I believe they speak him name around 16 times and that is before Lupin shows up to check on them.
My headcanon about blast ended skrewts is that Hagring got permission, because they were used for triwizard tournament and since only source about crossbreeding came from Rita Skeeter's article they might as well come from Australia and aboriginal wizards call them Nopes.
Hagrid is like Forrest Gump. Both such good pure people that they can come off as a goofus. Both maybe not all there? But 100% brilliant in their own ways.

I'm gonna have to argue with your appraisal of Fluffy here. Fluffy is a _guard dog,_ not a pet or teaching aid. He's trained to chase off intruders, and was specifically in place to deal with some very dangerous people. Barking at, chasing, and biting people who try to get through that room was his _job._ A well-trained guard dog is not dangerous at all when "off-duty", and, I should point out, the one person we see get bitten by Fluffy while working was more annoyed than actually hurt.
Guard dogs are always dangerous. Even the well trained ones and also off duty. Most dog owners overestimate their dogs and underestimate the danger.
The irony is, everything Hagrid “Shouldn’t have told” is information Dumbledore definitely wants Harry to be told.
