    • @TalonSky
      @TalonSky 4 роки тому +95

Do we know for certain that Hogwarts doesn't charge a tuition? We only see things through Harry's eyes and of /course/ they aren't going to charge the Boy Who Lived, but that doesn't mean there isn't a fee for other students. Hogwarts isn't a public school, after all, it's a private boarding school, so it wouldn't receive funding from taxes.
Besides, the supplies needed for each year at Hogwarts are not insignificant in price, plus they needed to physically get to King's Cross each year (which they can't do via floo or brooms, and likely apparition would draw too much attention). So it absolutely does cost money to go. Yes, there seems to be a fund for financially disadvantaged students....in Voldemort's time, at least. We hear no mention of it in the current time in the books, meaning one of two things: the assistance either no longer exists, or the Weasleys don't qualify for it. I personally believe it's the latter, and is mostly reserved for Muggleborns literally without access to Wizarding currency.

Ron received a brand new high quality watch, something he rarely had during a life of hand-me-downs, and they gave Harry a watch owned by Molly's brother who died during the last war, a second-hand and older watch but one with significant family value, something Harry has very little of from his own family, and it also connects him to the Weasley family. The Weasleys don't have much money and yet for the most part are a very happy and loving family.

Yes! I also think Rowling showed that it's absolutely ok for a woman to decide to take time off to raise a family. This makes even more sense when you consider that they value family and good relationships over money and materialism. They were the family Harry never had. They gave Harry true unconditional love, which he hadn't experienced since he was a baby with his mum and dad.

I could agree with that, and I'm glad that at least they were never hungry. But still, I'm always upset that somehow Ginny always had new things, but Ron didn't. Like, in this family still were better and worse kids. Bill, Charlie, Percy (to some point) and Ginny were good, twins were always underestimated for abandoning One True Path Molly imagined for her kids, and Ron was basically invisible to her. Molly basically accepted twins' choice of career when they've got her gifts! Not because they're doing what they love and were good at, but because they've started to make more money. Rather shallow for a woman who was all about love, right? And don't get me started about Ron. Draco got way more love from his mom than Ron from Molly.
And Arthur should have been more responsible. Either should say: 'we can't afford more children' or find better job. Somehow he accepted it later during the war, so it wasn't that much of a burden for him to do something different. And after Bill they could have adopted orphaned girl, I'm pretty sure there was many of them around. What, pure blood still matters?

Although Ron was supposedly deprived growing up, you’ll notice that as he grows up he does not exhibit great ambition like Percy does. So as a grown-up, I doubt that Ron would be super ambitious In the sense that he would not wish to acquire great material wealth.
Insofar as the tent theWeasleys used at the Quidditch World Cup, if you recall, the book states that Arthur borrowed it from someone at the ministry who couldn’t use it anymore. So he personally did not create a huge tent like that with magic-it was given to him as-is.
The implication in Rowling’s books is that, just like the Muggle world, not all people have similar skills, magical or not. Also, the magic has to be used upon something tangible in the real world. All spells have specific but limited uses. Some of them wear off. All of them take education, talent, and practice.
Just as no one in theMuggle world can master every skill there is to master within their lifetimes, wizards and witches are similarly limited by their opportunities, interests, and every day limitations.

Indeed such people are often preferred over their upper class piers especially when a job has the reputation as being difficult with little financial reward.

The twins were so set on earning money they rather fooled around with inventing jokes than get good grades, because they wanted to be able to earn money for themselves as soon as possible, even if that meant leaving school early. Without Harry's money they could have struggled a lot, instead of getting rich quick like they did. I always feel bad for only children or kids who dislike the family they’re with. I guess that just puts things into perspective. From the outside the Weasleys don’t see themselves as being too much different than other families besides their finances, but what’s normal to them (very close family) is not the case for others.

I can't figure out why they would need so much money anyway unless they were really, really bad at being wizards. Even young wizards could move objects, but Molly and her husband couldn't remodel the house, paint, wallpaper, sew clothes, create nice furniture? Molly's knitting needles worked by themselves and the dishes washed themselves, but she can't get boards to nail themselves together or a sewing machine that would sew, or brushes that could paint? Mr. and Mrs. Weasley are lovely people, but incompetent wizards.

The Weasleys sometimes remind me of my family. My mom and step dad's side. My step dad is working and my mom would be a stay at home mom and then became a foster mom. My step dad has 4 children of his own and you add to them the little foster sister. That's seven people in the house, and I used to live with them too. No fun money at all, the end of every month was difficult. My mom and step dad knew every single trick, like using discount coupons, what time sales were on in the stores and so on. But their motto was "We'll manage". And, indeed, they always managed. They would sacrifice everything for the children. Nowadays, I live away and have my own job, yet when I am out with my mom she always wants to offer me something, and I have to smile and nicely force it the other way around "no, mommy, I'm the one who buys you something now! You did so much for me!". I love the Weasley family, especially Molly and Arthur, I feel like their house would be a very loving and warm place to grow up in.

A loving family is HIGHLY important, with the Weasly's humble life kept their kids from being spoiled like Draco and Dudley. Plus in real life, not many people have that luxury (loving family) so if u do...count ur blessings. If Aurthur did ask for a rise and Molly did work but kept their humble love and care then Percy would not have disowned his family to only reunite when the ministy fell.

I believe much of what you said, with a few extra thoughts. Arthur is an honest, compassionate, and loving man. He is also highly intelligent and observant as well. His and Molly's first priority is the survival of their family. Although it appears he has no ambition, he is in a position to observe the corruption of his so-called "betters" within the Ministry, and understands that running afoul of them often leads to retribution of family innocents. Arthur needs to be insignificant to fly under the radar. He has no illusions of grandeur. Everyone around him are scrambling to "be someone" on the top of the pile. Arthur and Molly know their worth. Isn't ironic how the so-called underling and his family helped take down one if the most feared villains of their age? Without the Weasleys, Harry would have failed on many levels.
Just saying. Thank you for posting. Blessings and health to you and yours and to all who read this!

You never mentioned how other families had fortunes from their family. They had money given to them, not earned.
Weasley is one of the Sacred 28.
(not even Potter was one - BUT the family did invent Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion so there was a fortune to pass down to Harry).
    Why wasn't there family money?
It is not like Arthur was disowned as the Weasley line wasn't prone to pure-blood notions and were considered blood traitors. But maybe the connection to muggles made it so that any book or invention created was buried/not sold because of the blood traitor label which made it so that there was no family money to inherit.
Molly was a Prewett, also one of the sacred 28
Lucretia Black was not disowned for marrying Ignatius Prewett, so the family name wasn't sufficient to be automatically a blood traitor in pure blood circles.
So there are plenty of options as to why Molly didn't have a family fund. Maybe the Prewitt line was sufficiently pure-blooded to disown Molly for marrying a blood traitor? If not, maybe Fabian and Gideon gave the family fortune to the Order before they died.
Does the Wizarding World even allow for females to inherit?
Maybe Ignatius, as the only living male heir, got control and passed the family fortune to the Black's, before he died.

I would argue there's a difference between poor and flat out impoverished.
I believe it's mentioned they're poor, but I don't see them as flat out impoverished. They have everything you mentioned, but having a lot of children doesn't mean you're not poor. Actually kids can kinda make you poor.
My own mom had 5, and it was a struggle. We had our heat shut off a few times, mom and the younger ones staying over at the neighbors. Struggling with bills. I'd say that's pretty poor. A high number of kids doesn't mean you're not poor....

I've heard a few topics about the Weasleys' and their financial situation. I still consider them working class, but NOT poor and penniless. At least the father has a secure job to keep something in the bank. Hey, 10 galleons may not be a lot but it's still 10 galleons.

There’s a big difference between poor and impoverished. Poor doesn’t mean homeless or starving, it means you don’t have “fun money” or whatever you want to call it. It means they could buy “luxury” goods and constantly worried about money. They couldn’t afford to buy much and had to either buy second hand material or reuse what they already had. Remember how Ron not only had to use a hand me down wand but also wasn’t able to get it repaired or replaced until they won money in a raffle? If you can’t afford the single most important thing a wizard needs then you’re poor.
I know working class folk. And their financial situation does not match up with the Weasleys. They may not be a secure as middle or upper class folk but they don’t (usually) have to count every single penny and reuse everything. They can afford vacations and phones and pets. So as I’ve already said, the Weasleys are poor not working class.

As far as we know, Hogwarts is free for the students, meaning exept for the supplies, Molly and Arthur didn't had to pay for anything. Yet still this seemed to be so much that all their saving were regularly drained.

With having the job he did, Arthur would not be of interest for either side. Thus not worth killing, recruiting or mind controlling. He and Molly were able to have 7 children during a very dangerous time in England. How many can claim that.

I can understand your point quite easily. The Weasley children strongly remind me of 3 of my high school friends. They were all triplets and came from a family of 6. They were never well off and their father was a minister. The mother stayed at home. But they were like the Weasleys: they were always friendly and caring and they are the strongest memories I have from my teen years.

Great video - I appreciate all the time you’ve spent thinking about this. I have a couple of ideas: 1) by not fighting in the 1st war Arthur was disliked by both sides - therefore both thwarted his career (social climbers usually pick a side and then use their connections to climb) and 2) perhaps Arthur was a plant in the Ministry, based on his “neutrality” the first time perhaps he could be seen as no threat.
I also have a question? Many of the pure blood families seem to have accumulated wealth regardless - what was different about Molly & Arthur so that was not so?

I found this to be a very thoughtful analysis, but cannot resist commenting on one statement that got my stay-at-home-mom dander up just a bit. "I think we can all agree that things would have been easier if Molly was also working." Nope. Not at all. I researched this for my own family recently, and if I were to return to work I would have to pay about$50 per child per day for daycare. Paying daycare for 7 kids, even if you're just having to provide care for all 7 on school holidays, would be insanely expensive. Far more than one individual could justify on her salary. One must be able to find a *very* good paying job to justify entering to the work force, if justification requires the ability to not only pay for childcare but have a dime or two more besides (which I believe it does). We might assume this to be a non-issue if we assume the wizarding world provides free childcare, and I suppose we do know that they keep slaves, so...maybe, I guess. And I don't know if the childcare situation in the UK is different than that in the US, so there's that to consider as well. But unless we can reasonably assert that Molly is in a position to make a truly dizzying sum of money should she enter the workforce (which we have no reason to suspect), or that daycare would be either free or heavily subsidized for the family, her getting a job doesn't make much financial sense.

Harry Potter Folklore I do have a theory that starts about halfway down the page but I wanted to say something important to Harry Potter Folklore as this channel has become instrumental in my life as of late.
Recently found out that I have Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer and because of a preexisting autoimmune illness I've had for most of my life I am unable to do chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Which, unfortunately means they cannot do much to treat the cancer. Which unfortunately has taken a brutal toll on mine and my fiances bank account as I am the primary earner working as a Network Administrator, which causes a huge amount of stress and anxiety unfortunately with me not working right now. I also suffer from a lot of pretty ungodly extreme pain and discomfort as the lymphoids in my groin are the ones taking the brunt if it currently. So laying in bed most of the time even though I'm not sleeping, so I started to watch quite a lot of UA-cam and I came across your channel. It was incredible, your voice is very calming to me and your videos actually interest me. But I was 4 or 5 binge watching videos in when I realized I was completely relaxed and in no pain or stress or anxiety whatsoever! So now, whenever the pain gets to be to much for me to handle I turn on your channel and just watch back to back videos and before long the pain goes away. I wanted to finally take the time to explain my situation and to thank you for your videos alleviating my pain and stress and anxiety, even if it's for a brief period of time. You have been an absolute Godsend to my life. Thank you and please, please do not stop. If I end up on the mend and back to work I will be the first to donate to your patron page giving back as best I can for the gift you have given me.
Now, I have a random off the wall theory for the Weasleys poverty and I believe this is an original theory.
We find out that Voldemort was able to successfully curse the defense against the dark arts teaching position so effectively that not even Dumbledore could break it, and according to Rowling the only reason it is finally broken is because of Voldemort's complete and final death (as it lasted when he was reduced to basically nothing because of killing curse rebounding off Harry). So that establishes that curses can have a pretty wide open terms for what they cover and when carried out by an accomplished, let alone an extremely powerful one, they can be near impossible to break. What if Mr. Weasley (and maybe by extension Mrs. Weasley was cursed to live a life in poverty, a proverbial hand to mouth existence, by either Voldemort or possibly even the ministry for not picking a side during the wizarding war? None of the children seemed effected when it came to money. And it would explain why Harry was able to give money to Fred and George "very loosely termed as a loan" for the joke shop which went on to be extremely successful or buying candy and other stuff all the time for Ron, he Marrys Jenny Weasley, so she will never know want again Bill and Percy both have excellent jobs meaning they probably good money by extension. And yet, he never so much as gets Mr. and Mrs. Weasley a Christmas gift or offers to chip in financially when he practically lives with them later on when it wouldn't even dent his massive pile of money in Gringots. Maybe it isn't him being selfish or being a Male and forgetting holidays/important dates lol. Perhaps instead, Voldemort did not want to kill or physically harm mr and mrs Weasley as they were one of the Sacred 28 families and pure blood wizard families were about the only thing Voldemort seemed to appear to show a little bit of care for keeping around. What if the curse was an attempt to sway the Weasleys over to the Deatheater side and lifting the curse as soon as they join, offering riches beyond their wildest dreams? They would be the absolute perfect spies as they had an in with the Order and although Mr. Weasley only works in the misuse of muggle artifacts he manages to have relationships with a lot of powerful high ranking ministry officials which they wouldn't look at twice as a spy.
Idk, like I said, it was DEFINITELY an off the wall theory and probably has zero credibility or credence but it was fun none the less to come up with! Let me know what your thoughts are about it! And, from the absolute bottom of my heart I want to thank you for bringing a semblance of peace and normalcy back into my life. Thank you.
So, now I stand here, silently awaiting to greet death as an old friend.
