    Great video. Very informative. I did 22 years in the Marine Corps, 14 years active duty and 8 years reserves before I retired, When I was an active duty Marine I used to think less of Reservist, but once I became one and saw what they had to do in order to keep their obligation, I began to realize how dedicated and hard working they are. Especially the junior Marines who had to meet their obligation to the Corps, their educational responsibilities, and work (some of them full time). I myself had to deal with my full-time job responsibilities (Law Enforcement), education (first few years), and Reserve duties. Since I was a senior SNCO I had to travel over 1,000 miles a month to attend drill since openings for my MOS and Rank were not available in my area or anywhere nearby. I witnessed dedicated SNCO's and Officers dedicate their time while at home ensuring deployments were properly scheduled and ready, some came on their own time to ensure everything was correct, some were on the telephone continuously, juggling family, full-time jobs, and Marine duty. What I was able to do on active duty in a year, they had to do in less than 24 days (2 days of drill for 12 months) and 2 weeks of training once a year. I have great respect for Reservist, they train and work very hard to stay in shape and keep proficient as combat Marines. Semper Fi!

      William Garcia so you were a teacher while a reservist? How was it balancing those two jobs? People tell me that being a teacher and a reservist would be almost no conflict, because they don’t work weekends or summers, is this true? Thanks

      I think that would depend a lot on your unit and the sort of culture, so to speak, that your unit has. If you're in combat arms, esp. if you're a grunt, nobody will likely look at you twice if you got one. Now if you were, say, in admin for something like a logistics unit or an air wing unit, then you might be looked at funny. At the end of the day, it would be your choice and while you might get some teasing about it, once again depends on your unit, but they'd probably forget about it by the next drill weekend or two.

      Reservists get deployed more than active duty personnel. I am Navy reservist and i have been in 36 months and have been on active status for 33 months. I have done 3 back to back mobs and 1 set of ADT orders. Everyone i basically deployed with were reservists like me. About 90% deployed were reservists. Even my time in the Army i was mainly with guardsmen or reservists.

    I used to love being on the advanced party on a drill weekend. It usually resulted in us taking the doors and top off the hummer, buying some beer and trying to meet girls. lol.....but it tightened up immediately when the main body of our unit showed up. But it was great....it really was. Even when in Death Valley in 93.....we built a pistol range for DEA and other agencies....it was great being on the rear detail. Our Captain was super cool....I just remember really good times during my drill weekends in those years.

      I was in reserves from Jan 2001 to Jan 2007. I was deployed to Iraq in 2005. We were deployed from Jan to March to do our work up in 29 palms California then Iraq from March to October. I stayed on active duty voluntarily from October to January (I made more as an active duty corporal than my civilian job at the time). I only was deployed once in 6 years but I have known reservist who were deployed 2 or 3 times during their 6 years enlistment but that was during the Iraq war. My old unit deployed when I did in 05 to Iraq then again after I got out in 2011 to Afghanistan. They have not deployed since then. Hope this helps.

    I enlisted in 1998, I never thought about the reserves nor my recruiter told me anything about it, when I was in MEPS to be sent to boot camp, I was told I "didnt qualify" for any of the 2 MOS I considered to do, my recruiter never told me that with time, and because I didnt have anything in mind and no time to discuss options with the recruiter over the phone either, they only told me to sign as an open contract, I was kind of upset thinking I was going to do anything they want for the 8 years I signed, should I have known about the reserves, them I would have joined as a reservist. But because of weird things of destiny, I got a medical discharge right before starting MCT, due to 2 herniated discs, that more likely happened during the crucible, when I started to have some pain in my back, I was simply "kicked out" with " no remedy according to them, but I wanted a second opinion and a civilian doctor told me I had remedy, got surgery and like new, no pain at all like if nothing happened, but still was not allowed to rejoin the Marines, maybe God wanted something different for me, which I appreciate

    Hey man cool video
    Thanks for this, it answered some of my questions I had about joining the reserves though there are some other questions I have if you don't mind answering:
    Do you get a break after graduating Boot camp? (Leave days?)
    Are you forced to go to the weekend training?
    What sort of training do you go during the weekend? (Is it hands on or something labor?)
    Too awkward but do you or have you been hazed?
    Have you been deployed?
    Thank you so much for your time man.

    • @SheldonLeeFit
      @SheldonLeeFit  7 років тому +4

      1. You get 10 days of leave after graduating bootcamp before you are to report to MCT (marine combat training)
      2. Once going through active duty training, drill weekends are of course mandatory for reservists since that is our obligation.
      3. Drill weekend is essentially work. Depending on your job/MOS, labor and hands-on training is synonomous. Even as an admin clerk, you will be expected to go to the field with the rest of the unit and do "Marine" things.
      4. The Marine Corps does not condone hazing, but that honestly depends on what your definition of hazing is... Will drill instructors at boot camp scream in your face and make you do things that you don't want to do? Most likely. Is that hazing? No because it's part of the training and there is a purpose behind everything you're told to do. Keep in mind that as Marines, we are warriors first and our job (engineer, admin, supply) second - and that means we simulate real combat situations. If you don't think you can handle that, there are other options like the Air Force, Army, and Navy. I can guarantee that it's not anything like the typical greek life "hazing".
      5. I have never deployed, although I volunteered many times in my first 3 years... stupid budget cuts.
      I hope I answered your questions well!

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 6 років тому

      To add to this, the Marine Corps does have some unoffical rituals/traditions that could be considered hazing by some but is happliy accepted by most, if not all, Marines. The simplest is doing push ups as punishment for making some sort of mistake, but outside of bootcamp that doesn't happen very often and it's usually no more than 10 pushups, max.
      The one tradition that might seem like hazing is the "pinning on" of rank, what happens is that when you get promoted, everyone in you unit that's your new rank (or higher) can punch you in the arm, symbolically "pinning" your chevrons on to your unifform. When you make Corporal, you are now an NCO and entitled to wear the blood stripe on your dress blue trousers, so in addition to "pinning on" your rank, all NCOs and Staff NCOs can also "pin" your blood stripes on by kneeing you in the side of the thigh. But this purely symbolic and most Marines recognize and so they won't punch or knee you too hard, although close friends might go a little harder on you than say, somebody from another platoon that doesn't really know you, even then, they're more than likely not going to hit or knee as hard as they possibly can.
      One thing that Cpl. Lee forgot to mention in his video was that in addition to your 1 weekend a month, you also have to do 2 weeks (usually in the summer) of what could be called extended training. Basically, during this 2 week period it's as if you're active duty and you spend 2 weeks straight with your Reserve unit. I don't about other Reserve units but in my unit, when I was in, we went to 29 Palms in California in the middle of Summer for our 2 weeks. 29 Palms, despite its name, is not a pleasant location to be in the middle of Summer, it's a massive base located out in the middle of the desert far from any real civilization. Anyway, during this 2 weeks we'd go there for what's called CAX or Combined Arms eXercise where Marine units from all over the US get together and operate like they would in actual war situation with grunts working with armor units, with arty, as well as helos and planes, something that even active duty units don't get to do all the time. But 29 Palms and CAX aren't the only options for your 2 weeks, during my time in I also got do amphibious training that culminated with an actual amphibious beach landing. The highlight of my time in the Marines was going to Operation Battle Griffin which was a 2 week exercise in Norway where the Marines practice going to Norway and marrying up with equipment kept there just in case the Russians were to invade Europe.

    Great video man. I'm really stuck deciding between the Army Reserves and Marine Reserves I really want to go Marines but I'm hesitant, and it boils down to one question.
    In the Army Reserves you enlist for a dedicated/guaranteed job. I want to do Computer and IT, but when I can't confirm if I could do this same, dedicated job in the Marines. Is it true that your job as a Marine Reservist is not "permanent", and you could be deployed for combat roles without warning?
    I'm really passionate about the idea of joining the Marines, but I also have a wife and we just bought a new home. I want to join a branch where I can balance the military life well with my civilian life. I can't tell if the Marines puts me in a much less predictable and possibly more dangerous spot than in the Army. Do you have any advice? I know there is the dangers of being deployed in either branch, but is the Marines much more dangerous than in the Army?

    Hey there, great video! My question is, Would it really be doable for a 30 something with a family and full time career to join the reserves? You talked about an initial training, how does one take that time off and still have a job? I appreciate any feedback you can provide. And thank you for your service.

    Quick question, if you get your schedule one year in advance, how come the one weekend a month is ambiguous? Since it's said to just be a Sat/Sun. Would that mean the marines would stretch out your weekend last minute? I'm currently in the same situation as you were prior to joining. I asked one of the recruiters about the one weekend a month and if it's ambiguous. He said no and after what you said, I'm unsure if I should believe him. Thanks for your time.

    • @SheldonLeeFit
      @SheldonLeeFit  7 років тому +1

      Dax Nguyen on the schedule it will show the exact dates and the drills that are more than just sat/sun. once again, it depends on your unit. My unit goes to the field often so we do have a lot of longer drill weekends. Some units may strictly drill on sat/sun because they don't have to. Really depends on the unit.

    • @daxnguyen6885
      @daxnguyen6885 7 років тому

      Sheldon Lee Since you wanted to focus on school but still wanted to be a marine. How do you find the right balance? Like when your drill weekends were much longer than two days, wouldn't that interfere with your classes? If it did, would professors be lenient since it was for the military or would professors be like "sucks for you, make up the work." In your honest opinion, do you think going through boot camp, mct, and all the training the marines instilled in your mind, can be applied towards studying and being more discipline for school?

    • @daxnguyen6885
      @daxnguyen6885 7 років тому

      Also, sorry for all the questions. It's a serious option I'm considering right now so I'm doing a lot of research to have enough insight to make a decision without regrets.

    • @SheldonLeeFit
      @SheldonLeeFit  7 років тому +4

      In my experience professors will work with you if you explain to them your situation and express a genuine interest in your class participation - now that means you're doing everything on your part too. For example, if you know you have drill that falls on the same day of an exam/lab/paper due, you should let the professor know in advance so something can be worked around it, and not wait until the last day.
      As for joining the reserves while attending school, I think it's definitely worth it from a character and discipline building perspective. You will find that the same principles that allow you to be successful in the Marines (getting promoted, getting good pros/cons, working with others) will allow you to be successful in school and in life. As for the military/civilian life balance, you'll eventually figure out a way to do both through effective time management - this applies to anything that you want in life. Feel free to ask any other questions you have, man. I'm happy to answer them!

    • @Texasmilitarydepartmentvid9654
      @Texasmilitarydepartmentvid9654 7 років тому

      Most of the guys I knew where allowed to do there schooling on a Laptop during there down time . I had a few National Guard guys and grils I worked with as a Security Guard. They where always on there laptop doing there college courses. I never went to college so I don't know how they go about doing that. The military pays for it so I'm sure they have something set up for them. Most of them worked a civilian part time job while serving part time in the military.

    • @loganshuler3655
      @loganshuler3655 4 роки тому

      Rose Cruz talk to a different recruiter somewhere else nearby. Don’t let the recruiter fuck you because the military is already going to fuck you as much as they can. Get as much as you can out of your decision to join. You could also try putting some pressure on your recruiter by telling him you’ve talked to other branches and they offered you an active duty contract and jobs that appeal to you more
