Workplace Conflict - Where Does It Come From?

The dynamics of conflict in the workplace stem from many things and it really mirrors the challenges faced in blended families. When you take 2 families and blend them, you’re intertwining different normatives for handling conflict and they can butt up against each other.
It’s very similar in the workplace. You’re integrating multiple people and trying to facilitate a ‘teamwork’ atmosphere when the truth is, everyone comes from different backgrounds so there is bound to be strife. This is especially true when systems fail, expectations aren’t being met, or inter-generational differences pop up.
Since the pandemic, inter-generational differences have become more apparent. In this video, Kiki gives an example of how she is a Gen Xer and direct communication was the norm for that generation. Younger generations may prefer methods like texting. Differences in communication preferences and views on the hierarchy of jobs may also cause friction. For Gen Xers, hierarchy was crystal clear, teachers and authority figures were high, the others were lower. Younger generations have been encouraged to voice their opinions which can lead to conflict when the hierarchy dismisses them.
